- In this episode I take a walk into the past. We examine how using a simple 6' log and yield an invaluable homestead tool called a shave horse. A shave horse is a foot operated vise that is used to hold lumber in place so the user can carve it using a drawknife or spokeshave. This practice was common on the frontier and homesteads up until the early 1900's.
Enjoy!

Nice build. I did bookmark it for future referance. Happy Holidays to you, your family, Dan and everyone else who has been watching this video.
YES! now THAT is CoalCracker Bushcraft! Thank you Dan.
Look at the cute little hatchet- love it.
Your a remarkable guy! My son and I made an English style this fall so We know it’s harder then it looks to build one. Thank you.
Well done
Красавчик мужик всё в ручную изготовил
Great build, Dan. Now if I can only find a source for a drawknife and spokeshave. Oh, and learn to sharpen them. I will have to show my wife your video so she knows what I mean by shavehorse.
Love the video Dan, so relaxing watching the build, absolutely love the music! Really chilled out.
Great Build, Pap would be so proud of you
Nice job!
Now to finish that canoe paddle for this springs canoeing season. Fun project.
excellent work my friend. invaluable in the woods.
This is awesome dude! Excellent craftmanship!
Great tutorial, Dan! Dick Proenneke is giving a thumbs up for sure!
very well done !!!! besides the shave horse you got yourself alot of tinder for starting fires from all the shavings and off cuts from the project
Very nice horse..beautiful legs. Good work
great job!
So much character. I love it
May I suggest that you make the footplate about a foot longer. It would allow you to keep your legs in a much more comfortable position, as well as give you more pressure on the piece of wood that you are working on. It will also allow you to open and close the jaws easier and with more control. I used one of these for decades.
Thank you.
Simply beautiful
Love this video, Dan. Please grind away the steel that has mushroomed passed the edge of that splitting edge. From personal experience, they will break away and lodge in hands, arms, legs and eyes.
Amen! I would have mentioned the same.
Yeah, had one sharp edge/flake just poke thru glove and at first it didn't register that my palm is bleeding.
I'd even suggest to use wooden mauls for some of the wedge work to limit mushrooming. The wedges are less effective that way. My brother used a 16 lb sledge on one my dad had and that wedge was almost useless it was out of shape so bad.
i got a nice scar on my belly precisely because of this.
True!
Very nice video Dan, thank you for sharing.
Awesome! I have some rock hard old telephone poles in the yard and want to make a shave horse and a carving bench from them. Possibly a pole lathe too. Projects, projects...always another project waiting! 😃👍
Nice!
That was excellent. Very masterfully done! Thanks for taking the time to demonstrate this!
That's a great shave horse!
excellent
Cool video format with the music playing as you worked...I like it.
So cool missed your videos
Holy crap, Dan! I love all your videos, but this one is by far my favorite. Love the music and style of the video. Great one!!
Great job! That looked like a ton of work
Great video, Dan!
Awesome vid! Simple is always elegant. Thanks for video
Awesome build brother and something to be proud of!
Dude, this is awesome...you 've got gold in your hands ;)
Awesome video. Wanted to make a shave horse for a long time. Great job
Nice looking horse. I usually use a crotch to make the dumb head. A lot less work. I also do my best to do a 3 legged bench using another crotch for the legs. Like a giant slingshot with the "handle" fitted into the bench. I am probably not describing it well but anyone who has spent time watching The Woodright's Shop on PBS has probably seen the episodes that covers the genuine versions of the colonial shaving horses that go back to Germany.
Great job ! Beautiful work
I really enjoyed this video, Dan!
Awesome job on the horse, loving these style vids 🐻👍🏼
Had to comment in the middle.
Dan ive been watching ya a long time now and gotta say that this vid is sofar the best you put on the "Tube"..the soundtrack just somehow fit.

Top job....👍
KCB/ UK 🇬🇧
Great vid. Love the hand tool tutorials. I made a few of these in the past. Started with four legs but found three work better and stand most anywhere. Two in back, one in front. Give the foot lever enough room up front. Just a suggestion.
inspirational,thanks for sharing
I enjoyed your video. I made my shaving horse about twenty years ago and have used it a lot. As a matter of fact my back to legs have since broken off. I just place the stump that I rive and ax hew and trim with under the back at the seat end. Works great!
Nice job . Good video.
I’ve always wanted to try making one of these. I’ll need more tools haha
Nice video, thanks for sharing
Very cool. I am going to make one.
Good build Dan

Well done 👍🏻👍🏻. 🇺🇸😎
Good video! Makes me want to make another bow!
Greetings, good video. Thanks for the share. pax,
Pretty snifty pal ! Yessir 🙂
Wow brother! Amazing build sir. Great music choice too. Merry Christmas!
I've looked at many videos on shaving horse, this by far the best. What type of tree was this?
I was thinking about using my draw knife!
Exactly like Roy Underhill build for his book, the Woodwrights shop.
6:55 TINY AXE! so cute :3
AYellowPepper I want one. Where on earth did he get that.
nice
muy pero ke muy practico. esto es para gente sin recursos como yo. lo voy a hacer.
Good build and great video. Thanks for posting it. Now I’m eyeballing an ideal tree on my back property line.
Man, right on time!
DAN THIS VIDEO BROUGHT BACK FOND MEMORIES OF BACK WHEN I WAS IN MY PRIME. YOU SHOULD HAVE ADDED SOME VERBAGE OF HOW THIS WAS A NO SWEAT TASK. HA! IT TAKES VERY HARD WORK TO MAKE ONE USING OLD SCHOOL TOOLS . WHEN I BUILT MINE I EVEN HAD A FOOT ADZE AND A BROARD AXE TO SMOOTH THINGS OUT A BIT. I COMMEND YOU ON YOUR HARD WORK AND MAKING A EXCELLENT VIDEO.
How did you learn to do all this stuff like this? Did you take classes on it and read books as well or did you solely learn from your father/grandfather/uncles?
More videos like this one!
But you didn't end with "this is Dan wowack with Coalcracker Bushcraft"..! How will I know who you are? And whether or not I should stay in the woods! Lmao! Great project brother keep them coming!
