1861 Colt Navy Shootout Challenge: Long Barrel vs. Short Barrel

- In this video I shoot a long barrel 1861 Navy by Pietta and an 1861 Colt Navy "Sherriff" model with 5 1/2" barrel in a shootout, to see which revolver brings the most shooter accuracy. I use the same loads, shoot the same targets at the same distances as part of our test...including shots taken off a shooting table. Its not scientific...but it sure is fun!

Everybody has their favorite. The 51 has always been mine. It just feels better in my hand than any other black powder revolver out there.

Again this was another fantastic video, I stayed glued to every minute of it! Another thing I would love to know about between these two revolvers is "Given identical loads what would the velocity difference be?"

The result doesn't surprise me. I had a .36 Uberti Remington Navy with a 7 5/8" barrel which I found very muzzle heavy. I shortened it to 6 inch which not only made the revolver balance better, the accuracy improved. Last year I bought the .44 Sheriff version with a 5.5" barrel which, having less meat balances even better and is at least as accurate as my friend's full length .44.
Thanks. No doubt. I suppose there’s a distance where it would matter but for normal shooting the shorter are easier to hold steady.

Good video. I have an 1851 with 7 1/2 barrel and another with 5 1/2 barrel. I was very surprised that with mine there is very little difference between the two. I tried them both with round balls and conicals. There just wasn't enough difference to mention.

that sheriffs model is one good looking pistola but i hope its eventually available in a 4/3/4 barrel length

I certainly believe that’s true…but it didn’t win by much. But on the more precise shots in the tie breaker (smaller targets) I believe what you say is true. Thank you

Conventional wisdom says that the longer the barrel the greater the accuracy, and this is true, but weight while maintaining sight picture sight alignment coupled with a straight trigger pull and metered breathing cannot be disregarded, and the shorter and thus lighter barrel can provide advantage especially with non-bench rested Mutiple shots, Dr. John Paul Devillers, a French target shooter, developed a wax bullet specifically designed to allow non-fatal or sport pistol dueling between opponents. In descriptions of the training participants weighed pistols and wore equivalent weighted sandbags on the wrist for months at a time prior to competition, and this was long before we had the phrase muscle memory. However, as a purist I am against this as the fatigue and stress must be incorporated into training and not avoided or compensated for, body soul and mind must be in unison for every shot, otherwise it devolves into the motions of a harlot as opposed to the raw unbridled passion of a pistolero, it is why there is no such thing as an electric paintbrush and it would matter little to the creation of a great work of art, in the same manner as a pen feather or pencil, that may have been used to craft a poem can't take the credit for the poem.
I agree with you. I expected the longer barrel to be more accurate but my theory is that I had better muzzle control with shorter barrel. Although there wasn’t much difference except the # on target. The string test difference was the 3 on the bull from the bench or that would have gone to the short barrel too. I keep shooting and learning! Thank you for the terrific post
