I put a thin layer of bore butter on everything. I found that fouling wipes off more easily if there's a coating of butter underneath it.

I do that as well after cleaning them, it does make a difference, I think it helps prevent powder from sticking and wipes down easy

@DeucesWildRC I agree. And it lasts in the gun on the shelf.

Talk about coincidence! Was asked that very same question by a new c&b shooter a few days ago. I follow pretty much the same guidelines you do. With one exception: During a simple clean, I use isopropyl alcohol(rubbing alcohol), to first clean off the bp residue. This also applies to muzzleloading rifles, etc. Been doing so for many years and have not found anything else that cleans up the residue quicker, easier, or more thoroughly. Afterwards, like you, a good final application of Ballistol.
My experience with Pyrodex also mirrors yours. Use plenty of the stuff...no problems.

I'm glad you mentioned removing the nipples even on the "simple" clean. I know many claim they almost never remove them, but I have seen too many cases of nipples rusted in place and extremely hard to remove on used guns over the years. Good luck with the trailer!

I take them out first! Even in a deep clean. Only put em in finger tight too…I hate stuck nipples! Thanks

A very good video. I agree with you. I rarely do "a deep clean" as you refer to it. i once did but found I was doing more harm by disassembly than the slight accumulation of fouling was to the internals. I now clean about once a year or if I develop an issue. your videos are great.

Haha it takes me 1 hour as well to do a deep clean. Like many a BP shooters have said, if you don’t have the patience to clean them or you find it a burden, then BP may not be for you. I believe you’ve even said that it’s an enjoyable part of the process and a 100% agree with you👍🏽👍🏽

Been shootn cap and ball for 50 years. Clean regiment much like yours. But generally leave one loaded all the time cause I carry it everyday. I live in southern Illinois and in summer humidity very high. Have had good luck doing things this way my guns don't look pristine but they have been through rain snow and any weather situation known and fired untold thousands of times. Like your videos jay appears ya have fun. That's what it's all about. 05:00.

I read an article once by a historian that a quarter masters inventory during the civil war didn't include any gun cleaning articles.
The theory was hot water and bacon grease was what they most probably used.
Since reading this I have experimented with mixtures of tallow, vegetable oil and beeswax. The particulars of the recipe don't seem to be critical. I use this as a bullet lube and LIGHTLY grease the whole gun inside and out. I basically treat it the same way as I do my cast iron frypans which really if ever see any soap.
Heat is the best steriliser I believe.
Clean up is easy, hot water and a few patches with a little of the "grease" and a more thorough deep clean at about the intervals your suggesting work for me.
Humidity, where I live can hit 90+% in summer
Ballistol is a great product, you can do a lot worse, and I use it on occasion.
    I enjoy your channel. Thanks

An old timer at my club, who recently passed on, used to tell us to remove the grips, take down the major pieces, put them in a basket, and run everything through the dishwasher...when the wife isn't home. Then wipe them down, apply a light coating of oil, and reassemble. He'd been doing it for his entire adult life. He also owned a decent gun shop.

I live in a year-round arid area - less than 10" of precip yearly. If I don't want to clean right now, I'm not worried about postponing. But I enjoy the "zen" of dis- and re-assembling, so I'm probably going to get to it pretty soon.

My problem with pyrodex was always longterm issues rather than stuff that was getting used regularly. I used it exclusively when i was young cuz thats what i was pointed to at the time as the industry standard 😵. Buuut i have had completely clean and oiled peices that were put away for years when i was younger n had small kids. When i got them back out i had rusty nipples seized in cylinders, all screws rusted n corroded, dead triggers, locking bolt, hammer, fuzed broken springs. In my experience if they were put away like you would put anything away for storage they just did not stand the test of time. I have heard this from others now, if you are gonna use it you have to check on them from time to time cuz even if you think it clean and preserved that stuff is gonna go to work on the steel. Its good for some people but i just stay away from it now, there is just no upside for me to use it.

Living close to the Gulf of Mexico the humidity here is rediculous so I have to deep cleaning and full tear down, BP and substitutes are extremely hydroscopic so it’s mandatory here! Bore butter works well to help keep spent powder from sticking to metal parts, I make my own bullet lube from beeswax and crisco, 80/20, 20% beeswax

    • @CapBallFanatic-gb3jb
      @CapBallFanatic-gb3jb  Před měsícem

How I clean is a bit different. First off I am lucky that my water heater has extremely hot water near boiling. I tear my (mostly Colt's clones) down just as normal to replace a cyl. the water is running and getting hot. I hold the barrel by the rammer and under the water till it is so hot I can't hold it anymore.... the cyl is in the bottom of the sink with the hot water running unto it. the nipples are out and in a card I made that they screw into... that card goes in my ultrasonic cleaner while I do the rest. bonus.. I never lose a nipple next I hole the frame with grips still on under the hot water. yep... next I have a cleaning rod with a 'mop' for that caliber that I run through the barrel and each cyl. So far 5 minutes spent. Ok. now i do what i do for all my pistols ..... I use my version of ed's red my version has lanolin in it and is a CLP but better. Now I clean like any other pistol. toothbrush some ER on to everything and wipe it down....Oh... my guns are nickel plated (by me at home) and so I can see any spots of crud. I tale a clean mop and put my ER on it and swab the bore. it is now shiny as a new dime. I twist it into the cylinders too (not too wet) The ER has gotten down into the action from the toothbrushing and is actually dripping out around the trigger at this point. wipe up... Screw the cleaner than clean nipple back in and put the gun back together. I never tear down a BP pistol past this unless a spring or something breaks! I have torn down guns treated this way that have not been torn down for a year or more and there is not one spot of rust anywhere.... same for all my smokeless guns.. no rust anywhere. All of this has taken maybe ten minutes.

@@CapBallFanatic-gb3jb My son says I should patent the/my version of Ed's red but I think it is too good to charge for. You can make a gallon for very little and honestly? it works for everything. if you keep a rag that is imbedded with it you can wipe down guns that others handle (we all break em out of the safe to show folks right?) Some of my guns are minty and 100 years old (a model 1917 made in 1919 for instance and a 1936 outdoorsman) so I would not use something that did not work. I have bought every cleaner oil whatever in the last 50-60 years and nothing comes close. Oh.. the Kerosene needs to be the K3 or camp type...Lanolin has to be the real stuff...AtF can be any brand.
