Loved the video. I used to shoot long distance BP pistol (off a sandbag) at 100 yards with my Uberti .36 Navy 40 odd years ago. 6 shots to be fired in 30 seconds at a man size target, best I did, from memory, was 21 out of 30 max. Used the Lee standard 375 diameter RB mould and 21 grains of FOA (German) powder. The powder charges were weighed as were the balls for consistency.

The ,36 Navy paper cartridge used a 124 grain slightly heeled bullet (Eras Gone mould) with about 17 grains of FFFg.
This powder weight varies according to various sources but is comfortable to shoot. Uberti uses a correct ball or bullet rammer.
Pietta uses a ball only rammer and does not work well with the pointed bullet. Still fun either way..

You touched a subject "Casting". people don't know the value in casting. there are many reasons why people cast, mostly for the money savings, however, you can fit the bullet to the bore of the firearm through sizing. that alone is the best way to achieve the best accuracy. (That's modern firearms) But still, when you load a black powder firearm, you size the projectile to the firearm and that's all part of it. Good video and best to ya. - Dave

@@DeucesWildRC in all honesty, you can get a ladel and melt it with a propane or butane gas stove in a pinch, or over a camp fire. I was even using a cheap soup pot at one point for a while and a table spoon. Just keep the water away from the hot lead.
If your looking for black powder cartridge casting and ya wanna get em a little firmer, drop them in water straight from the mold. Itll pick up about 10-15 more bernell hardness. Soft lead gets around like 30 or 40 i think. Hard cast is around 60-65, but dropping them in water from the mold should get you about 50 or so. Can also powder coat them in your oven on a cookie sheet at 350°F for an hour. Not hard. Itll function a lot like a full metal jacket. Lead fowling is non-existent, and expansion is hindered to the point of "nope" in game under 100 lbs. It will make it harder to load in anything not using cartridges though. Drop in conversion cylinders arent usually too expensive if ya wanna go that route with a percussion revolver fwiw.

Good video. You should try the Kaido Universal Conical bullets coupled with Triple 7 3fg powder. Kaido’s projectiles are the absolutely the most accurate, hardest hitting and deepest penetrating conical ever made. The Kaido conical bullets have been field tested against Florida wild boar and deer with 100% success even in 36 caliber. The Kaido bullets coupled with Triple 7 3fg powder are the best and most energetic combo that you can get for percussion revolvers and are hands down better than all others hands down.

I guess the twist rate of the rifling is pretty important. I have two Pietta 1851s, one Uberti and one Armi San Paulo, all 7.5 barrels. The Piettas and the Armi San Paulo perform better with the same conicals but the Uberti isn't enough difference to mention. I also have a couple of shorter barrel Piettas that shoot a little better with the conicals but not as much difference as the full 7.5 barrels. Also, I always shoot about 20 gr in mine. My dad died rather unexpectedly unfortunately. He did enjoy watching you shoot and found a good many of your videos informative. Got him hooked on Blackie Thomas too a year or so ago. Among some others. He didnt have the patience to work thru getting these percussion revolvers to work. Kept swearing be was gonna buy another and let me have it for a few months to get it balanced and tuned for him. I tried to tell him it doesnt take that long. Ive learned theres a few things that are tried and true for me and then some little details custom to each gun, if i can shoot it for about 50 rounds i can prolly clear 99.9% of its hickups. He bought me a Navy 6 thru Taylor's with a square back trigger guard for my birthday. I havent had the time to shoot it, but its ready to. I miss him every day. Lost him July 25, just a few days ago. Im lost without him and I'm trying to keep up with everything. 40 head of sheep, 5 horses, 4 rabbits, 5 dogs, and 15-16 hr days a work. Im at least off work til the 11th now. We were buying a ranch together and we finally got power tomorrow up there, so i can start moving up there. I love solitude, but he kept asking what my dream for it was and didnt buy the fact it was just a porch, a cigar, a little whiskey and him with my wife watching the sun go down. Im a simple man... I dont need complicated. We got 80 acres with BNSF and BLM for neighbors. Closest neighbor with structures is 3 or 4 miles away. Ya dont get more solitude in this day and age really for living. Now i gotta soldier on without him. To say im trudging thru this cannot be overstated at the moment. I was looking forward to making him watch your conical tests in all honesty. Numbers didnt really compute for him, but seeing the energy transfer and how it affected plates or ballistic gel helped him understand how different projectiles worked. He used to cuss 357 for hunting. Kept telling him he was using it with the wrong projectiles. Didnt click til he saw ballistic gel tests. Lol my wife is similar. Its interesting how these cap and ball projectiles behave in gel. Round ball, and these guys from eras gone leave a very narrow cavity and not much of a temporary cavity. Keto Ojama(not sure i spelled that right) makes a flat round nose 44 and 36 that actually work amazingly well. Very heavy slugs when theyre cast. Ive been looking for his molds actually. But they perform wonderfully in gel for hunting requirements. Massive temporary cavity, good expansion, great energy transfer, and not a terrible permanent cavity. His 44s work great in dragoons in particular. 35-40 grains of fffg with around a 300 grain slug i believe. Its got some decent felt recoil, and ive heard nothing but praises sung about it by everybody. Guess he hunts bear with it using a Colt-Walker. Lol.

An interesting test comparison between conical bullets and round balls in cap&ball percussion revolvers. Several takeaways from this test are:
First, we can clearly see that there is a major power factor difference between the conicals and round balls. Where the conicals substantially out performed in power the round balls.
Secondly, it is apparent that many of today's Black Powders do not achieve the power factors that the specialty Black powder, which was an invention of both General Hazzard and inventor Samuel Colt in the 1850's.
That extra power Fine Sporting Pistol-revolver gun powder was about the equivalent of 5FG granulation and made of the most effective charcoal available.
Today the only gun powders that are in the ball park of power factors of the 19th century Fine Sporting Pistol-revolver Gun Powder is Triple Seven 3F powder and Swiss Null B powder as well as the South African Obatex Black Powder that is said to be even more powerful than Swiss However it is not currently available outside of the Republic of South Africa.
Thirdly once again we see that all of the Colt open top cap&ball percussion revolvers need taller front sights and deepened, opened up rear hammer sights in order to achieve better accuracy especially with wanting to achieve point of aim accuracy.
Noted Black powder authority, Mr. Mike Beliveau conducted several tests where he proved that the slower rate of rifling twist in Pietta cap&ball percussion revolvers had no adverse negative effects on the accuracy of conical bullets, rather the opposite where the conical bullets were actually more accurate than round balls in the Pietta percussion revolvers. In the Uberti cap&ball percussion revolvers, with the faster rate of rifling twist, such appeared to have no positive effect to increase the accuracy of the conical bullets, rather the conical bullets appeared less accurate than compared to the slower rate of rifling in the Pietta percussion revolvers.
Over the years I have received information, feedback from my Customer base that finds my Kaido Bullets to be more accurate out of Piettas and be less accurate in Uberti replica cap&ball percussion revolvers.
Mr. Mark Hubbs, did an excellent job at coming up with historically accurate copies of 19th century cap&ball percussion revolver conical bullets.
The difference between Mark's Eras Gone By historically accurate conical bullets and my VKV Products and Services, Kaido Ojamaa-VKJV Universal RFN Hunting bullets and Survival Fishing Sinkers, is that my Kaido bullets are made for the serious purposes of Hunting, Wilderness Defense, and Preservation.
Where I specifically use effectively proven modern Flat Nose conical bullet designs that I specifically tailored just for cap&ball percussion revolvers so that responsible persons can be effective at hunting, harvesting dangerous game animals such as Wild Boars- Feral Hogs,Bears,Mountain Lions, Herbivores etc. To be able to bring themselves home safely with the
    "Wild Bacon".
It will be even more diversified for the viewers if you would also test my 31/32 (70/75) grain Kaido Trapper bullets, and the ,36 caliber 145 grain 380 as well as my 44 caliber 220,240 and 255 grain Kaido Ojamaa-VKJV Universal RFN Hunting bullets. This way, the viewer can get the whole bigger picture on all the options of projectiles which are available for the very practical and capable cap&ball percussion revolvers.
