      xD xp XD. Not even an opal while talking about whole europe! Maybe itÂŽs some gem in Finland. Tampere is one of most beautiful cities in Finland and still itÂŽs kind an ugly as the city. I mean , If something is genuinely beautiful in Finland, itÂŽs the nature, not the cites at all.

    I used to live in the Helsinki metropolitan area, but I moved to Tampere about seven years ago to study. I never really liked Helsinki city area, but Tampere I love. Tampere has it all: nature close by, beautiful architecture, great places to eat and enjoy culture, as well as all the services and shops you'd expect to find in a city. And if you really, really need to get to Helsinki, it's only a 1,5 hr train ride away. Right now the tram construction kinda messes up the city center area a little, but you can still easily avoid the main construction sites (basically just one road).

    Another idyllic small town about the size of Porvoo, but by lakes like Tampere is Savonlinna in Eastern Finland - which has the most Finnish lakes. From Savonlinna you can drive to Imatra rapids next to the Russian border. The way in between takes you over an unforgettable narrow and pretty high ridge winding between 2 lakes. Postguard material. It's just wider than the road that it has beautiful park-like forest, yet narrow enough so you can see water on both sides. And there are resting spots to film some.

If I was pressed to guess, I'd say it was the Finlayson, a clothes (and fabric?) factory. I think you stood by the Finlayson pipe, when you spoke of the repurposing. Like the name suggests, the founder of Finlayson was a Scot, who then became Finn (well - during the Russian rule). So fitting: FINlay - FINland :)

    That name PyhÀjÀrvi can be translated to english..
    Last part jÀrvi is Lake.
    Word PyhÀ can have multiple meanings..
    PyhÀ can be religious like catholic saints. PyhÀ Birgitta is saint Brigitte.
    Or pyhÀ can be holy.
    We have many places having word pyhÀ on them and they are not necessarily connected to christianity.
    They can be old worshipping places before christianity landed here or they can be places of great importanse for what ever reason to a certain group of people or tribe.
    Also some plases have PyhÀ on them after some happening that have touched local community.. it might have been for example some big accident.
    PyhÀ paikka is like sacred place.
    So..
    One can translate PyhÀjÀrvi to Sacred Lake or Holy Lake.
    But since it has been so important to livelyhood on fishing and transportation and as word pyhĂ€ means so many things that are important it can also be translated (very freely) to "very important Lake" 😄

    I'm not gonna diss Tampere (where I lived quite contendedly for ten years), but you've barely scratched the surface of Helsinki. Next time, step over the PitkÀsilta bridge to the Eastern part of the city. A bit more lively and real-lifey over here. Anyway, enjoy your Nordic adventure!

    Did Ashley do all the rowing in that boat, when you say the Finns can be hardcore in the sauna do you mean naked :D

    • @tonys1636
      @tonys1636 Pƙed 4 lety +5

      Yes, that is normal throughout Northern Europe, one would get funny looks wearing a swimsuit in a public sauna, some do mention that being naked is optional for those unaccustomed to the practice, but when in Rome......

    • @miikasalo
      @miikasalo Pƙed 4 lety +2

      @@tonys1636 No, we're not naked here in public saunas. What they meant was that Finns could throw water to the stove (more often) so it would be hotter in the sauna
