One partly historical comment: When Lidl ( large German company) entered Finnish market, it tried to break Finnish recycling system and it offered worse working conditions that what was the norm in Finland. Responsible consumers partly avoided Lidl for these reasons. Perhaps for that reason they now participate to common recycling system and perhaps the working conditions have also improved.
Consumers vote with their shopping behaviour. It is good to know what else is involved besides the products and the prices.

@@LightCaelum Since Lidl has started participating in local bottle recycling system and probably the working environment has normalized, I wouldn't expect that to be the case any more. Lidl has invested a lot in advertising where they have tried to make those people look ridiculous who where doubtful about them. They are trying to emphasize that they have large selection of local, Finnish, products and not everything is imported. Which seems to be true. But since their shops are smaller and offer smaller selection, the selection of all products tends to be smaller.
@@LightCaelum Some snobs might still avoid Lidl because it has an image of being a cheaper store than S-Group's or Kesko's stores so "only poor peasants go to Lidl". But that image is also changing.

I might move there at same time as I most likely will get a husky and they like cold climates, I also have a summer house that we rent when we visit in summer, I also love the chicken they do in K market and I speak fluent Finnish. I’m not quite sure exactly if we do but most likely as my mom is from Finland and has always wanted to go there and own some horses 🤗 so I’m excited if we get at least 3 horses and a little boy husky! I really like sharing things like these lol I hope you have a good day!
The grocery store looks so good compared to the ones here in the USA. The fruit and veggies options look heavenly and honestly, the prices don't seem so bad. My wife and I spend $250+ to get by and it's bare minimum usually even by shopping at Aldi and Lidl. I'm really looking forward to moving to Finland.

I miss Pinaattikeitto very much in France, frozen Pinaattikeitto blocks are so good and easy to use, rye bread is much better in Finland and more varied.
Thank you for making these videos! I lived in Finland as an exchange student for a few months and I really want to go back. So your videos about stuff like finding a job etc. are very useful and videos like this are really nice to watch since I visited those places as well.

First ever post office in Finland it wasn't, since the building isn't so old. The building was finished 1938, but the first post offices in Finland where opened 3 centuries earlier. Pääposti, the main post office, was opened in the building 1938. But the whole building used to be just for Posti and it had a main post office, which had the useful exceptional feature that it was almost always open. So, if you had deadline to send something, sometimes late, you had to go to that office to have it stamped on that day.

Very nice video! You should try the oats from the Lidl called Myllykivi Pikakaurahiutale. The best in taste and also the least expensive, and when you microvawe them and add frozen berries, You will get the best porridge ever.

How come i've never seen pick up as much as you wish egg section before!?😱 Since Lidl is the closest to me, i almost always shop from there. Fresh made orange juice is the best thing at Finnish markets for me🍊

I grew up in Finland, my native country. In those days all I remember is the local market. They used to sell animal blood. Kuusitien Katu. I don't remember too much else. I think everything was made at home. Definitely no exotic products. I mean the 1950's. Could you find mämmi?

I have yet to see in any CZcams video an article that I consumed in Finland when I was young, dehydrated preparations to be diluted to make blood pancakes for breakfast. I wonder if this still exists.

Hello, Ihana. Have you tried exchanging bottles for money in Finland? 😊 I saw a video where they insert bottles and the machine will determine how much each bottle is. It will be a great content if you'd do a vid on it.

@ there might be some confusion that people from other countries think that the payment they get is for the bottles and not a refund of the deposit that was included in the price of the product.

I'm moving to Finland in December from South Africa and I was wondering what the grocery stores look like. Thank you so much for sharing! When you purchase meat in Kmart (for example the fish we saw in the counter behind the glass) do you ask for a certain weight or base in on the price (ask for 10eu of salmon for example)
Usually price per kg for salmon (and other fresh meat/fish/poultry) is written on a board. So you’ll have to ask for a certain weight but I’m sure it’s okay to just tell the staff how much you’d like to spend on it and they’ll be happy to weigh it out for you. Good luck with your move!
Just ask and you will get it. In busy shops you may need to take a numbered ticket for your turn, so look out for this. Learn to count in Finnish (which is very easy) so you can hear your number when it is called instead of watching the sign.
Ask ask ask. They work in customer service after all. I've lived in Finland my whole life and I'm still not sure how you're supposed to buy fish from the fresh counter. I just say I'd like around 300 grams of the tail side salmon for example and what it costs. They will tell you. I have another tip for you, whenever you're at the vegetable/fruit/fresh produce section, always check the little number they have for the scale because you weigh your own stuff! They trust you like that, expect for LIDL where you don't weigh it yourself. So basically you have to weigh the tomatoes, carrots, bananas, chilis and stuff like that. And always buy candy from the "custom" section where you can pick whatever you want. It's always cheaper than the normal candy bags, unless they have something you really need. I'd suggest going to the big K-Citymarkets first as they have much bigger/better fresh meat counters and one person will serve you as you have to print out a little ticket and wait for your turn next to the counter. And don't sweat it too much, I've been to many other countries and I've stressed out their shopping customs but in Finland no one really cares. You just lay the items on the conveyor belt (or whatever its called), wait until the person has beeped them all, then pay and pack your stuff yourself. There is no one to pack it for you. Also remember to grab a bag to put the groceries in, its always found under the conveyor belt when you first start loading in your groceries. Or you could always bring your own bag to save money and plastic. Hope I helped at least a little bit :P
EDIT: The grocery bag also costs money so put it on there with the rest of your groceries and they will scan it
@@masterticcu35 You are correct; all your advice is good and accurate. One extra tip is, in addition to taking your own bags when you go shopping, remember to take your empty bottles and cans to get a refund on the deposit that you pay when you buy them. It is crucial that they are not damaged so that the recycling machine can read the barcode.

Is this...normal for grocery stores to be this fancy and high-tech in Finland? This looks like Whole Foods (a.k.a "Whole Paycheck") on steroids.
It's a normal K-Market or a K-Supermarket
Usually the bigger "hypermarkets" in cities are little more fancy and have a bigger selection, but this seems like a normal suburban grocery store.
Yeah, they are like that and I shop at Redondo Beach Whole Foods.

Personally, in Finland, I have a slight preference for Prisma/S-Market/Alepa (different size shops for the same company) over K-Markets. My main dislike is that there is far too much processed food made with lists of ingredients as long as a toilet roll, and it is all packaged in loads of plastic. Cheese is also not good in Finland: this is an industrial product mostly made by Arla, etc. Try the cheese counter in Stockmann (if it still exists). It is really hard to find something like a whole chicken, or a large, single piece of meat: mostly it is cut into pieces, and marinaded in some dubious chemical sauce in the obligatory plastic box. Most Finnish brands of beer are nearly identical, characterless Eurofizz, but you can find a fair selection of much better interesting British and German beers. For coffee, Italian Lavazza is better than Paulig's products. Elovena oats is one thing that is excellent. Also, in Helsinki there is at least one fairly good, proper Asian shop, where you can get real, imported Asian food and ingredients.
I don’t really notice the cheese counter in stockman Herkku. Maybe one day I’ll make a vlog about Asian grocery shopping in Helsinki (from one of those stores in Hakaniemi!)
@ You could try Tapiola Stockmann; that is where I used to go. The Asian shops are good.
My opinion is that cheese is excellent in Finland. You can try Valio cheeses. There is big variaty of them.
By The way Järvenpää City-market was chosen The best crosery store in the world by IGD 8.11.2019.
@@blackcoffeebeans6100 Did you ever live in France, or the UK, or Italy, or Spain? While it is true that Aura (by Valio) is okay, and better than most in Finland, British blue Stilton or French Bleu d'Auvergne is considerably better. Have you ever tried Mont d'or vacherin du Haut Doubs, or Cornish Yarg, or Saint Nectaire (oval label)? The so-called Emmental in Finland does not even resemble real Emmental as you would buy in France or Switzerland, which is something far superior. The food in Finnish supermarkets is clean and safe, but totally characterless, like most food in the USA, and all packed in masses hermetically-sealed plastic. I still think Finland is one of the best places to live in the whole world, but the food is not something that it is good at, on average.
K market in Sotkamo has very good chicken but I really don’t like how much plastic there is in the packaging, I’m only 9 so I prefer the K markets as most have these ‘ mini trolleys ‘ I use them all the time as I am so short for my age 😑 but I also like other shops that aren’t too far, I have a local Lidl from where we used to go when we went on vacation unfortunately as my gran died we can’t go there anymore as that was her house and it’s been sold but if we sell our house here in Britain we would have money for maybe a husky some horses and a normal house and I can’t wait to go in the saunas again even though i feel like I’m on fire in there XD I really can’t wait if we do but I’m not exactly sure if we will but most likely in 2022 when I’m 11 ( or 10 I really don’t know ) but if I get a husky I would name him Levi as I want a male 😃🤣 and I can’t wait if we get to go to hesburger, it’s to me better then mc’donalds and anything here in Britain 🇬🇧 can’t wait if we do 🙂

@ I have tried lot of the cheapest products and some of those are fine, but sometimes it is just better to invest some more to get better product if you have money.
@@freezedeve3119 Also the cheaper stuff tend to be sometimes much more unhealthy. If you for example sometime compare uncle bens rice to pirkka variant or spagetti is also one that I have noticed that there is huge difference in carbs.
My late MOM once said to me,: "if you want to save money, do not buy nothing cheap"
