    That kind of a drying cabinet is a Finnish invention and it's default in every Finnish kitchen. Dishwasher is optional extra, so because of that there were both. By the way, that kind of bikes are called "mummopyörä" in Finland. It means literally "granny wheel" and could be translated as "granny bike" :)

When you live every day in these surroundings you easily forget the greatness of the nature or what is unique in your motherland because you easily take that all for granted. You made me see Oulu and Finland from a whole new perpective! (Btw the market hall was closed because of renovation as you were guessing.) Thank you for really energetic and inspiring content! Hamburgers and lemonade are expensive in Finland. If you want to eat out "cheap", on lunch hours you can find places in many cities/towns lunches drink+salad.+main course + bread for 6-9 euros per person, then there are some places where there are "all you can eat" type of things with about 10 euros.

    Regarding the beach you went to, the seabed around the Bothnian Bay (the sea area around Oulu) is still very much rising after the effect the last ice age had on it, so the beaches around Oulu are often extremely shallow to great distances from the shoreline. I mean in some places you can walk up to 100 meters from the shoreline and still easily stand with your head above the water.
    The reason for this is during the ice age the ice around this latitude was several kilometers thick, and all that weight pushed the earth's crust down a lot, so now that the ice has all melted away the surface is still rebounding from that. The Oulu region is actually where this phenomenon is the most prevalent, with the crust rising an average of 9 millimeters each year even today. The the south of Finland it also happens but it's only 3-5 millimeters per year.

    • @WAYAWAYWithAsh
      @WAYAWAYWithAsh  Před 5 lety +2

    • @monksuu
      @monksuu Před 5 lety +3

      Sometimes those washing machines leak or break down so it's so handy to have them already in a wet room where the liquid goes to the drain automatically without any panic. ;) We have a building code for installing washing machines or dish washers in a non-wet space that include an over-priced plastic floor that has to be installed under the machine. The thing is to protect the building from excessive amounts of water in the case of a leakage or a breakdown. Without one the insurance company doesn't pay anything.
      The history of washing machines in bathrooms in Finland goes to hand washing in a bucket where handling large amounts of water made a mess in other rooms. Of course, one other place where Finns washed their clothes/curtains/carpets (having a fully carpeted floor is very rare in Finland) is a sauna. Also, running a washing machine in a open kitchen would be quite loud so it's handy (and more quiet) to be able to close the bathroom door. I live in a one-room apartment/flat similar to the AirBnB Josh and Ash stayed in and I can wash clothes while I'm sleeping. I couldn't do that if my washing machine was in my kitchen that would be one of the four walls of my commonroom/bedroom... ;)

    How come you found such a decent spot of weather during that part of rather horrible summer here? Now in August is has been quite ok but June and July were mostly quite cold, windy and rainy...

    When in Finland, try Salmiakki by Fazer (I think you are already in Sweden now, but you can buy it there too). It's a liquorice chocolate bar and soooo good. Also: you know people are good people if they like liquorice.

    Funny thing with baths here. I dont think finns know what a bath is. Never seen an apartment that has a bath. Not even in hotel rooms.

      They used to be pretty common still a few decades ago. I'd say from the late 70's or early 80's they increasingly got replaced by showers. Perhaps because a shower's faster, smaller, convenient, and uses less water (even though Finland has unlimited fresh water resources). So, if you visit an apartment/house from pre-80's with a bathroom that hasn't been renovated too much, chances are there's a bathtub. Of course some people still today choose to get one also in brand new houses/apartments.

    Adidas is also Finnish. But, an American company would like to buy this logo. It was a bear sport in Finland, with three tracks. AND, Wilson is strongest in tennis, golf, baseball and American football. Wilson belongs to the Finnish Amer Sports company.

      Sumeet t no, it’s just dark blue here. Maybe it’s due to the angle of the sun or the sea bed
