Completing the Pokedex in Pokemon Yellow without trading to another game

  • I always wanted to see if it was possible to catch all the pokemon in the game, but using the more extreme glitches present in Pokemon Red/Blue never really interested me. So I figured out this weird route to get all 151 Pokemon without completely breaking the game. This is a basically a highlight reel of a Segmented Catch 'em All Run in Pokemon Yellow. Not quite Speedrun level skill or pace, but I wasn't relaxing the entire time either. My real accomplishment with this run was showcasing the broad scope of both Gen 1 Pokemon Exploits, Gen 1 Pokemon Capture locations, and still maintaining the usual structure of a pokemon playthrough.
    Important Time-Stamps:
    Intro and the first glitches (0:00)
    Mt. Moon, Cerulean City, Mew (1:32)
    Vermilion City, Magmar, Squirtle (4:34)
    Mr. Mime, Fossils, Rock Tunnel, Rocket Hideout (5:14)
    Lavender Tower, Koffing, Mr. Fuji softlock possibility (9:10)
    Snorlax, Super Rod, Exp. All, Celadon Gym (11:59)
    Fuchsia City Gym, Safari Zone, Landing at Cinnabar (15:25)
    Trainer-Fly glitch using Ditto, Saffron City (18:34)
    Catching a lot of water based Pokemon, Powerplant (22:15)
    Cinnabar Island (24:02)
    Viridian Gym, Alakazam, Rival 6 (27:19)
    Route 19, Seafoam Islands, Tauros (29:20)
    Victory Road and Elite Four (31:19)
    Missingno. in Pokemon Yellow, evolving Pokemon, Porygon (34:13)
    Cerulean Cave (37:39)

    This is a criminally underrated video. This is one of the more technically cool challenge runs I've seen of pokemon, and I like how it wasn't too technical to be a barrier for normal viewers but technical enough for more knowledgeable players to understand what was going on. I know that this video is 3 years old but this really deserves thousands more views than it already has.

    I finally caught all 151 original Pokemon in Yellow thanks to this tutorial. One little difference is that the glitch that deleted Mr. Fugi in your run ended up deleting a scientist and Rocket grunt in Silph Co, and the second Snorlax south of Lavender Town. Luckily, I had already caught the Snorlax at Celadon City, so I narrowly avoided trouble there. Otherwise, no problems. I did use Ditto encounters for some of the Trainer Fly Pokemon, as I didn't like having to spend all my money or lose half my money for the Pokemon you had to lose a battle on purpose in order to obtain.

    There’s a much easier way to do the trainer fly without having to battle specific trainers, but it does require you to reach the elite four.
    First you would initiate the trainer fly and fly to the elite four. Then change the pc box which will result in the game saving.
    Second - restart your game go down to victory road (just walk down) and move a Boulder with strength! Then battle and defeat a random Pokémon.
    Third- go to the basement of cinnabar mansion and encounter a ditto. Once you encounter it switch to the Pokémon that has the special you need. You can either run or kill the transformed ditto and fly back to where you imitated the trainer glitch. Then you will encounter the pokemon

Problem is I never could catch Kangaskhan. I was one of the lucky kids that got the event Mew. If I could've caught that Kangaskhan I would have had a 151 pokedex without exploiting glitches.

    random piece of trivia: in Generation I, Poké Balls and Ultra Balls are at their maximum effectiveness when the opponent is at one thirdhealth, and Great Balls at half health. For some reason, this actually means a Great Ball can be even more effective for catching than an Ultra Ball.
    Also, if I'm not mistaken, Status Effects don't stack with health for some reason.

      @@Carlitonsp1 I'm gonna have to duplicate the single use TMs.
      ....BTW I may have made a mistake, I caught a second pikachu thinking I could evolve this one but now I'm stuck with 2 pikachus that can't be released. Please tell me there's some way to get rid of one of them, I dont have another device to send them. I'm a perfectionist and having 2 pikachus ruins the purpose of my save, I'm gonna have to reset my progress if I can't get rid of one. You can save a lot of money by just buying great balls. Especially because ultra balls are broken in the first gen and have a significantly lower catch rate than great balls.

    • @Ghi102
      @Ghi102 Před 8 měsíci +3

      Not really true:
      Ultra Balls + Sleep are far superior to Great Balls (~20% chance per ball regardless of the Pokemon because gen 1).
      However, without sleep, great balls are better, you are correct.
      Also, HP of the Pokemon is mostly irrelevant, it helps a bit, but is very low compared to just sleeping + ultra ball

    • @megamachopop
      @megamachopop Před 8 měsíci +1

      @@Ghi102I don't believe this is correct either. Great Balls are much better at high HP compared to Ultra Balls, and with the minimal amount that low HP improves catch rate, Great Balls + Sleep is the best way to catch Pokémon for the most part.

      You need to approach the trainer from the right side. As a general rule, the reason I say "Burn your Walk" is because you need to encounter a trainer who approaches you. Hence, you need a space of at least one tile between yourself and your opponent when they see you.
