    40:23 The AI in gen 1 picks its action/move AFTER the player makes their move. So, in this case, it saw that you switched out to Haunter BEFORE it chose which move to use - causing it to choose Hydro Pump instead of Quick Attack.

      Yep, AI in gen 1 is a dirty cheater. This is why the AI is also able to use full heals and such on the same turn as you paralyze them for instance.

      I don't understand how Scott made this mistake. He's done dozens of solo runs before and I swear he's mentioned it before, I know jrose has. Did he just completely forget about it? Is it possible he could have done this many runs and not known this extremely basic and well-known mechanic? He's pretty knowledgeable about the generation as a whole.

      I love Scott but his choices lately have been very... suspect. I was literally screaming at this video every time he wasn't at the level cap. So basically the entire half. Easily could have been deathless. But I guess for me the added challenge doesn't make the video more interesting. I personally would have loved to see Scott absolutely dominate a deathless run with ease. But that's just me. And his over lays are getting excessive. I barely look at them and when I do it's usually to see what the base stats are but they're not listed, just the dynamic in game stats. They kinda take some guess work out and, assuming he can see the dynamic stats, change the way he would play considering in game that information isn't available. And also why hack in rare candies if you aren't gonna even hit level caps lol

    I 100 % understand your choose with the rare candies, but for me the training is probably the part where I'm losing the most Pokemons. Either because I get critted and OHKd by a stay Rattata or simply that I level up to few times because the training is a pain so I'm underleveled.

    • @HighPriestFuneral
      @HighPriestFuneral Před rokem +5

      On top of that, economizing the training is, for me, part of the joy of Nuzlockes. Gen 1 is a broken mess and with a team of properly leveled (to reach the story trainer's Ace) the game isn't that much of a challenge. But choosing not to train and using the trainers and wild Pokemon you get along the way, is where the fun is for me and makes it into a grueling survival game at times.

    @grundgutigertv6170 Před rokem +22

    Scott, I have a bunch of feedback for you and hope it helps with future nuzlockes:
    1. NEVER get cocky in a nuzlocke. Thinking you can take risks will cost lifes. Always go to at least near the level cap.
    2. Never rely on inaccurate moves. In solo challenges you can reset until your strategy works, but in a nuzlocke it means death and unnecessary risks. Hypnosis, Sing and the likes are to be avoided. The lowest accuracy you should use is the 75% of sleep powder. Throw everything below that into the trash.
    3. Play around the crit. Even your own. Lets face it: in this challenge you knew it was coming.
    I do like myself an interesting nuzlocke, but not at the cost of the mons. Losses caused by cockyness or poor preparation only stirr exasperation directed at the trainer in me. You can do better and - even more important - you can treat your pokemon better, since they are the reason why nuzlockes exist. Its not about "oh, these IVs are soo bad", its about "yeah, he is weak. But together, we WILL win this!"
    Love your team, scott. These specific mons only live once.

    • @Spudmay
      @Spudmay Před rokem +2

      Idk, the loss of a Mon and the struggle is more entertaining to me than a clean sweep. I get your opinions though. And this is a "competition" channel, so I understand wanting to strive for excellence in your approach, not a C tier run

    • @grundgutigertv6170
      @grundgutigertv6170 Před rokem +1

      @@Spudmay you get me wrong. I do not like when someone plays bad ON PURPOSE. It doesnt do the Pokemon justice.
      Not everything has to be a setup one shot sweep. Its about getting the most out of the pokemon you have.
      I would rather ban boxing pokemon to get another team (like he did with mankey) so he has to work with what he has right then and there.

    • @InfernosReaper
      @InfernosReaper Před rokem +1

      @@grundgutigertv6170 That bit about banning boxing pokemon just seems kinda silly when you can only get 1 mon per area. Selection is already restricted enough.
      That aside, I'd have thought he'd have learned his lesson when things went south so easily the first time he strayed too far from the level cap

      Tbh in gen 1 games the Nidos kind of fall off. It's tough to waste your good TMs on them IMO. I don't wanna put my tbolt or Ice beam TMs on Nidoqueen/Nidoking when I could give them gyarados. I love gen 1, but unless you put some kind of rule/limit on encounters, it's hard for every run not to just turn into Kadabra + Gyarados + Snorlax vs The World, as all three are guaranteed encounters (kadabra from the game corner).

    • @iantaakalla8180
      @iantaakalla8180 Před rokem

    Hey Scott, nice to see your version of a hardcore nuzlocke, even if this is still the very beginning.
    What I enjoy most about this kind of challenge is the player creating a tactic around what pokemon they have available any executing that efficiently.
    So to be honest seeing you getting punished for not leveling up to the cap and then having to rely on inconsistent sleep tactics to brute force through felt like you deserved it. x)

    One way I found to make HC nuzlockes more fun is no training on wild Pokémon. Makes you have to decide which Pokémon are worth leveling in battle, growth rate, and when to battle trainers / save for leveling on later. Also when you get to the e4, you definitely won’t be able to have 6 Pokémon who are leveled enough. Fun option

    Really like the Nuzlocke. The addition of the DVs in the overlay is great.
    It's also pretty interesting to see how you learn new things that aren't important in solo challenges. Like the AI chooses a move after yours including a switch (which obv. don't happen in a solo challenge). So Koga's good AI would've always gone for the Bug-Move against Kadabra after your switch.^^
    I agree that you should ban sleep for the Nuzlockes because it's too strong. On the other hand it nerves grass type a lot. Also it would be possible to ban all boosting moves, because... yeah they are even stronger. But I don't know, if I would do it. They are just so much fun in Gen 1.^^

    So glad to have Scott on the Nuzlockes! Gen 1 content for Nuzlockes is not at a premium but Scott has nailed this!
    Also big props to using the rare candies, some CZcamsrs like to pretend it’s this big deal but it’s simple - do your viewers want to watch you grind for 45minutes to get all your team to level 12 for brock? no we don’t, so why should you have to do it 😂 keep up the amazing content Scott!

    • @ScottsThoughtsPokemon
      @ScottsThoughtsPokemon  Před rokem +1

      Apparently some people do want me to grind. But it does seem like this is a small minority. Mostly I really want to play nuzlockes, and grinding prevents me from doing that if I want to maintain my schedule (and actually have some free time here and there).

    • @lemurw431
      @lemurw431 Před rokem

      @@ScottsThoughtsPokemon - Definitely a minority then!
      I’m not sure why it bothers some people so much, yes you miss out the potential of being ko’d by random wild Pokémon but you lose out on that stat gain that battling gives you instead of rare candies so the gym battles and elite 4 are harder as you lose out on the boosts by using them!
      Whenever I see people criticising rare candy use they never seem to mention that bit haha
      Think I speak for the majority when I say stick to this way and we hopefully get to see many more in future!

    About that Koga battle: the reason Venomoth used Leech Life the moment Lucky came in is because, in Gen 1, the AI waits to choose its action after you. The computer knew you were sending out a Psychic-type, and knew to use the super-effective move there. Still, you probably would've lived a non-critical. Just bad luck,

    Standard logic for rare candies is that you can use them after you unlock the daycare. Reason being that it’s no different from depositing a Pokémon and cycling round, it just saves loads of time for everyone involved

    Hey Scott, I waited so long for the second nuzlocke and here you are entertaining as ever and with an awesome overlay as always. The addition to your rules sound quite good but I think what makes a nuzlocke interesting is a somehow competent AI. So I don‘t know if rom hacks are an option but maybe there are some gen 1 rom hacks with a decent AI. But anyway in later generations this problem does not exist. But I have to point out that this is a complain on a very high level. Because your content is awesome and you are awesome and I will watch every video anyway. :)

  • @justsomejojo
    @justsomejojo Před rokem

    This was a fun watch! I find rare candies hard to gauge. In a way, I feel they lessen the interesting management aspect of the game - do I give this mon that will roll through the next gym exp or that weaker one that needs levels? But for efficient video creation they are probably necessary - and the managing of exp is something that's not necessarily an interesting factor for a video like this. I was playing around with the idea of going by how much exp a route has, just looking at the trainers (and maybe the average number of encounters in unavoidable tiles). Because, as someone who regularly replays gen1 with full teams, yeah, it can get too easy if appropriately leveled. The tensest fights are always the ones that you're underleveled for in this generation, at least for me.
    I love how Poliwhirl made it to the end AND saved the run. It's a low-key favorite of mine, largely because I got a bunch of Poliwhirl plushies as a kid that I grew attached to. They are kinda ugly beanbaggy ones, extremely off-model but I love them. Because of this I actually rarely evolve my Poliwhirl when I train one, so I never realized Poliwrath loses speed on evolution. Poliwhirl always felt very fast for a middle stage, but I never paid much attention to its buff dad.

    I am happy to see more Nuzlockes and I like the video overlay you settled on. It looks good and conveys most of the right information imo.
    In general I think the Nuzlocke format has more to offer than using a single mon to solo the whole game.
    I think you are already thinking correctly that trying to figure out the level pacing is gonna be key. (e.g. when to cap level, when to stop using rare candy, etc). Probably best at this point to just do more runs and slightly tweak it based on what you feel is challenging enough. I think the ideal run (from a viewers perspective) has a few emotional Pokemon feints.
    If the difficulty ends up on the higher end you could string and narrate together multiple smaller/failed runs into one video that would probably also be entertaining to watch. For example if I don't actually know if a run succeeds when I start the video I'll probably be more inclined to watch it.
    Also I would consider removing the dupes clause (it may be fun to watch a where you get stuck with a lot of dupes)

    Only difference i would make with your Weepingbell/Victreebell is waiting to evolve until lv 42 when it learns Razor leaf. Stone evolutions unfortunately do not have level up moves any longer and Razor leaf is one of the best grass moves in gen 1. Another reason i say this is because you could give Mega drain to a different pokemon to improve your type coverage overall. Also id have switch trained abra and let it learn psychic naturally, then give the psychic tm to maybe Butterfree. But to each his/her own lol. Great video and good luck in future nuzlockes.

    Instead of a Dragon type monolocke, you can choose to go for a Dragon egg group instead? It'd give you a bit more variety to choose from and you could form a team out of it (Charizard, Arbok, Gyarados, Seadra and Dragonite... No Aerodactyl since it belongs to the Flying egg group).

    Loved this nuzloke! I think gen 1 nuzlockes are really interesting just because of all the weird glitches and gimmicks. My thoughts on the potential sleep ban is to not ban it. If you do lots of mono type runs it would be interesting to see if access to things like sleep powder really boost a bug or grass run compared to other types

    I really like that you don't calc every battle and didn't always go to the level cap. It feels like a lot of nuzlocke videos these days are more showing off solved puzzles than adventures. My favorite play throughs of Pokemon games are Marriland's Diamon playthrough from when that was new and he made it feel like an anime, slowly building an interesting team of six, and ProJared's FireRed nuzlocke where he hardly knew anything about the game, made goofy names and then made personalities based on those names.

    I have thoughts for Scott!
    1. You're right about the rules. There are a lot of differences between a true Nuzlocke and the "hardcore nuzlocke": a true nuzlocke starts at Power On and doesn't allow glitch candies, and you can't manipulate encounters because there's no duplicates clause. I think hardcore nuzlocke runs make better content.
    2. You killed me when you taught nido body slam two levels before it learns it naturally 😂 I absolutely LOVE the raw Scott! Your recent stuff is so polished on the final playthrough, which I do love, but it's nice to get the mistakes that we all fell in love with.
    3. Your proposed rules are fun! I can't wait.
    4.Idea on rare candies: How about you can use them only four times all playthrough (but as many as you want at that time). So, prior to Brock, prior to Misty, after Erika, and before the penultimate rival battle, for instance. That eliminates most grinding but allows for some drama.
    3.

    Hey Scott! Huge fan! My thought would be stay with the level cap or like 5 levels below. To make it little harder, I agree with no sleep. I would also ban set up moves. Then you can’t badge boost and sweep. Just my thought!
