- Description via the DMB Almanac [Link: www.dmbalmanac.com/SongStats.a...]:
This song was originally known as "41 Police," a name derived from a combination of its being the forty-first song Dave wrote and its sounding like a Police song. "Police" was most likely not intended to be a final name for the song but rather a way of identifying it from other songs when it was new (see also "40 Always").
After being perfected during the studio recording sessions of Crash, #41 came to be the most played song of 1996 and an instant classic. When Béla Fleck and the Flecktones guested on the song on NYE 1996, a marriage was made between #41 and the Flecktones song "Sojourn of Arjuna". Since then #41-Sojourn has become a tradition between DMB and the Flecktones whenever they play together. The Flecktones have even played a bit of #41 during their own performances of Sojourn of Arjuna.
#41 has been played every year since its debut and has been a regular feature of both Dave Matthews Band and Dave & Tim setlists, with the exception of 2006, when it was a relative rarity.

This is so cool
Damn this sounds good! Love the energy DMB had in the early days.
Incredible song. Wish they played the song like this again!
DMB History gold!!! Thank you so much for this!!!
I’m sad the guitar riff was lost over time.. needs to come back
this is so good.
So this is the early beginnings of #41z. What a jem!
Such a great song. And it was initially written about the greed and hustle and loneliness after the man got their cut. Would love to hear them rip out these old lyrics one day
Love that outro "I'm ok. I'm ok. I'm ok"....so real.
I love how this song sounded back then. Those were the days...
When Roi hits........
sometimes she said a lie
race again
she almost fighting
time is turning
oh grace and chase her head away
well i'm falling through
oh lie away
racing while all inside tears away me
in me
hey
come and talk tell me where
lying for
say find my home
shall sail away
and i will see the water numbers
on my head and on my feet and my soul
come on to on our way light well
so turn with me away this lightning
oh to wave this hand
poor and lonely here
oh i sold out here
oh wait
lying away
no lover yeah
my love
Just as good as the produced #41. Awesome vocals and the music is angelic!!!
The wailing at the end reminds me of "born in the USA" when Bruce kinda wails at the end. Soooooo uplifting
Back when they were THE Dave Matthews Band.....
So awesome that you remember that. I have fliers for shows back in 92 with that printed on them. Leroi named the band.
They released UTTAD under "Dave Matthews Band" in 1994. This was '95.
@@KNOCkAROUNd511 I would pay large amounts of money to get my hands on one of those!
Thank you. This song is so deep and genuine. Before Lilywhite got his greedy hands on it.
+Erebos1 I think every DMB album is great in its own way Everyday was more emotional as in love and kind of soft rock style, Stand Up was poppy with a rock/grunge sound to songs like Hunger For The Great Light.
+Erebos1 Exactly. Crash and Before These Crowded Streets were their 2 best. Under The Table And Dreaming probably fell in third for me. Busted Stuff was great too. But Everyday was okay. Stand Up only had 3 good songs on it I thought. And theyve had great songs in recent years, but they just havnt had the same sound
He was the best thing to happen to DMB
