How to Carve Texture in Fake Rocks

- In this video I've blown on the final texture coat, (1 part sand to 1 part Portland cement) and then show how I carve in the cracks and finish out the surface of the rock. Hope you like! :)

Beautiful! Some nice techniques! (Just a little hint: cracks won't cross over like an "X", the physical forces just don't combine to do that).

Shooting mortar the same as shooting the fog coat? same process and tools??
Hey Adam, the fog coat is thrown on by hand. This video shows this process... czcams.com/video/bLuEwSE9gfw/video.html After it's thrown on I usually mist it with a hose to make sure that it gets watered and goes off, (it is a cementaious material). After that I let things firm up after which I work the final texture in with my margin trowel, (pointed) and drywall brush. How did youu do the black? And what is the product you threw on?
Thanks for the message Mc Key! The black is simply the texture coat mortar mix in contrast with the colored Fog Coat which is a stucco product. How do you do a fog coat?

Hi I live in Oregon Southern Oregon and I'm a rockhound I find a lot of rocks that appear to be a natural or partially unnatural with like hidden faces carved into them and numbers and letters most people think I'm crazy when I try to talk to them about it have you ever heard of such a thing and or any of these techniques possibly used in something like that thank you very much
Hey Nicholas, Yes, our brains are wired to see and find patterns. Whether in clouds, trees, or stones etc. Especially faces and/or animals shapes. It's kinda fun actually! So no worries. :)
SO just to confirm, directly after spraying the texture coat we want to throw on the fog coat and then let it sit for about an hour before doing nay cracks?
Hot sun, minutes. Cold afternoon shade, hour plus. The heat is a challenge in that if your sprayed on texture coat isn't kept moist it can go off so fast it will be totally weak and just powder off the day after you blow it on. It also needs to be at least 3/4" thick which may require that you come back a second or even 3rd time when your shooting with a hopper which requires a very thin watery mortar mix. Use LOTS of Sika acrylic in your mix and mist your coats with a waterhose as you go along. Hand applied mud can be thicker and made almost any thickness.. When temps are cold things slow down. So need to make sure you have enough daylight to finish the texturing. I would also suggest trying Color Hardner instead of fog... Anyway, hope that helps. 👍😎

what did you spray on the foam???
The fake rocks are made of steel rebar and concrete. For the final texture coats i spray on a morter mix and then a stucco product call fog coat which gives the rock color. Which fog coat color did you use
