- Here we see the simple way to mix up a thin mortar mix for hopper texture coat spraying. We include a pint or two of Sika Acrylic Add-Mix in a full 94lb bag of mortar mix, (called Spec Mix from Home Depot here in San Diego) when using an electric mixer. Really helpful as this is the next step I’m doing for my rock. I wasn’t able to find the Spec mix so I just got a mortar mix this time. Thanks for the tips, the videos really compliment the topics in your books and give a nice visual understanding.
Really been enjoying your videos, Learning different techniques and a lot of confirmation of my own. I don’t really know any of other rock guys. It’s such a creative trade with really no standardized way of doing things I love to see other peoples ideas and techniques. I love doing rock work kinda out style right now, So I don’t get to do as much as I do everything else with the Pools as well. But I always reach to it better than the last when I get one. Finally gonna be able to build my own pool and getting excited to do something really tricked out for my daughters. Looking forward to doing your style of texture with the hopper never done it that way but looks a hell of a lot easier and more realistic than stamping . Thanks

I live in Ontario all my word of mouth is north Oc to the easterly la county cities, I’m wondering if I can labor for you for free a day or two here and there at different stages ?been a hard worker all my life, I’m pretty a well-versed Mason , concrete block granite tile stone, Pools/hardscapes, couldn’t see myself doing anything else for a living, but I have an actual passion for rock work and improving. Mine is not poor, And definitely built with integrity, impressive to a homeowner I guess but it’s no where near wow or masterful
And takes me way too much time.
I put my mixer on a piece of plywood that is soaked in linseed oil and with the hose I keep it clean so what spills I use a flat shovel and loose very little. The oil keeps the plywood for many use's 👈🤠👉
Heh Dave, I'm a paid subscriber to your network. My question involves the use of mortar as opposed to the concrete. It seems that on some builds, you use the typical concrete bag. On this, you used the the blended mortar mix. So the question is....what conditions call for using concrete as opposed to using the blended mortar?
Thanks for the question Mike. Mortar is more sticky and thus is good for vertical applications. It isn't as strong having a lower psi generally so I never use it for structural coats. Mixing in mortar to concrete helps increase ease with vertical applications of rockwork. It stays on better. Say 2 bags concrete to 1 bag mortar. Bytheway I use 60lb bags cuz the 90's wear me out too much. 😝 Hope that helps. 👍😎
So you don’t use concrete mixed with mortar except for the scratch coat? I’m assuming the structural scratch coat was already in place which is why you went straight mortar mix? Thanks.

Hi Tom, I'm pretty sure I've got all that info in my "Makin' Rocks" book. davehenderson.podia.com/makin-rocks-ebook. But I keep things simple so regular bagged concrete, mortar, Sika acrylic add-mix, (couple seconds pour per 5 gallon bucket mix or 8 second with a cement mixer and 2, 94lb bags of morrar). i think it would be more efficient to just mix with a drill paddle and in a bucket with zero loss and %100 efficiency

I’m going to go for it with throwing that fog powder too sounds like a fantastic idea. The video doesn’t do the color the proper justice.
What if I threw a variety of Davis color say .25 - .75 lbs , then contrast with the fog? To maybe use no paint or least amount possible? Maybe go straight to speckling or paddling(highlighting) with a brush and straight paint(thinking out loud) one downside of artificial rock I don’t like given to the customer is paint that is not going to last
Hey Rib, thanks for the kind words. I would also try "Color Hardener" in place of the fog coats. Same application but it'll be harder and more long lasting than fog coat. As with all concrete/mortars you can use tints to change the color. A quick online search found this: www.amazon.com/Concrete-Color/s?k=Concrete+Color
How I can make myself mortal mix, this product is not available in Poland
Hi Artur, you just need a clean sand and Portland cement or a comparable product in your country. Mix a 1 to 1 ratio of material for a creamy sticky mix or a 1 to 3, (sand to cement) for less sticky mix. Whatever is used in Poland to set bricks in place should work... Good luck. what type of mortar are you using?
Thanks for the question Wil. As you can see in the video it's just a pre-mixed bagged mortar mix called Spec. Mix from Home Depot, (or wherever). I add a few scoops of Portland cement to make it a bit more "sticky" plus the Sika Acrylic that I also mentioned in the video. Hope this helps. If you have a Home Depot don't buy that version go to the tile section they have an acrylic admix that's two and a half gallons for like 25 bucks

I stand corrected, thankfully we're weaker on the east coast and they stock 60 and 80# bags.
Actually I'd prefer 80lb bags instead. I do use 60lb bags for all my concrete when doing hand work though... Decided long ago i didn't need to continue trying to be a hero... 😝👍😎
People.. WEAR A MASK when dealing with that stuff! Irreversible damage can be done to the lungs breathing in cement dust!
