For over 30 years, I've made a wonderful living for myself and family of four creating world-class water features using real and faux rock in sunny San Diego as well as professional sand sculptures all around the world. In 1995 I founded Henderson Sculptural Arts, Inc. with a dream: combine my love for sculpture with business. At Henderson Sculptural Arts, we design, create, build and repair artificial and real rock waterfalls, grottos, ponds, and pools using state-of-the-art techniques and materials. We can also create something in sand for your special event as well!
In short, we make dreams a reality.
And now I'm taking what I've learned about starting successful businesses, contracting, sculpture, water feature construction, and more, and sharing it with the world. It's my mission to help people like you enjoy more success both in your business and in your personal life.

What do you have in the concrete mix?
I use concrete for structural coat by itself then use concrete mixed with mortar for vertical applications about 4 parts concrete to 1 part mortar. On small repairs I use regular bagged mortar mixed with Rapid set mortar to increase the strength plus acrylic add-mix to help with durability and to reduce water penetrating protection. Have tons of free downloads on this stuff and more at davehenderson.podia.com if ya like. Hope this helps. :)
After finding your channel and studying everything you do and say, I’m planning on trying this. Two questions: 1. Is that just mortar? 2. When do you apply the waterproofing element?
How is the concrete supposed to look like after preparation and before the coating?
You're the contractor that charges people $10Ks of hard earned money to "fix" the shoddy work you over charged for 10 years earlier.
This project is over 22 years old not 10-and most projects that old show issue no matter who builds em. And my tune up fee was no where near "$10Ks"... So I think you're thinking of some other guy. I do hope you have an awesome day and that you feel better and become less grumpy. May life treat you well my friend! Cheers! :)

What product do you coat the slide with?
What do you coat the slide with?
I don't do slide coatings anymore cuz I'm tired of them pealing, flaking and failing on jobs I didn't build, (can't be sure the original builders made the slide correctly). What I have used is Ramuc Slide Coat. It has failed me on enough jobs so that I wouldn't use it again. But I know other rock/slide guys that use it still... The other company is www.westcoat.com/ Not had problems with their stuff. They recommend using their epoxy first followed by their polyurethan the next day. If ya need to wait then you need to sand/roughen up the slide surface before the poly so the bond will be better with 60 grit sand paper. I just remembered a client has been using a marine product for decades and he says haven't had any issues. Here's the link: industrial.sherwin-williams.com/na/us/en/protective-marine/catalog/product/protective-and-marine-coatings/products-by-industry.11543396/pro-line-4800.9520503.html

Oh my aching ass, so much heart ache on the job. The customers don’t know what a person goes through with all the bullshit!
Hello, I’m going to attempt to built a concrete pond. Do you seal the paint with something to stop it from peeling off? Particularly rocks that are partly submerged? 😊Thanks from London, UK.
Thanks for the question John! Ya, I never seal my painted rockwork. Other rock guys do but I just use high quality exterior latex house paint. FYI submerged rockwork doesn't peel if it's a biological pond, (has plants and fishes). The paint does fade, (not peel) when in people pools that have chlorine in them over time. But for your pond build the easiest way to do that is by using a pond liner, (rubber EPDM or other type of water proof material) over which you can apply concrete. You can also build ponds without any concrete but I like concrete because it protect the liner and makes getting in and out to clean it easier. This video shows an example of this strategy, (concrete over rubber liner): czcams.com/video/JKYnssK_whQ/video.html No faux rockwork was used on this project other than a little paint on the pond shell itself which in short order gets totally covered by algae. To learn more on pond building and rockwork you can download free pdf files and/or look into getting some of my other content to help you with your project if ya like. See: davehenderson.podia.com Anyway, I hope this info helps and good luck! :)
@@DaveHendersonFakeRockVideosthanks so much for the reply…very appreciated. All the best from London.
Any interest in traveling to do a training seminar? love your work!
Is it just cement. Or added stuff
@@wheeler56 Quikrete Pump Grade Stucco Base Coat with Sika Add-Mix added. But any good quality mortar works. Just need to keep it wet (shinny) on warm days to slow the cure otherwise it won't set strong but will crumble off the next few days... 👍😎
I also pour the mix through a 1/4" strainer to avoid clogs in the hopper... 😎
How did you do that texture on top?
If you're referring to the rocks at the beginning of the video they were textured using the simple hopper spray technique. see: czcams.com/users/shortsRAX0HsWhqdc More faux rock how-to stuff, including free downloads at davehenderson.podia.com if ya like. :)
Come on man! It can’t be made by human-been. It looks very natural. I’m impressed. Thats exactly what i’d like to see on my future pond. But l’m afraid it would be hard to find someone able to do the same in Russia.
Thanks so much Mr. Dave!! This was really helpful
Unbelievable!
Thank you! :)
Mr Dave! Would you use this waterproofing method on a large pond? Or would you rather just build over a EPDM liner? I think I’ve seen you do both, just curious
Ya, you can take both approaches. The key with concrete ponds with waterproofing membranes is that tinny holes, pits, and crumbly voids are often existing after the structural concrete/shotcrete step. These will cause leaks. So the pond surface needs to be smooth enough for the membranes to work. I therefor apply a cream coat of mortar with lots of acrylic add-mix to help cover and close all those. One pond for example that I did was an above grade elevated pond over a grotto space. I used a micro camara to look under pipe return lines and all over the whole ponds basin only to find numerous porous, tiny holes requiring 4 coatings to cut the leaks down to a small amount. It still leaked slightly. On liner ponds that are in the dirt just need to be carefully installed to avoid punctures. Hope that helps. :)

Just in time!!! Was just assessing my damaged "Flintstones sofa" at the tiki bar over the weekend and trying to remember what exactly I did/used when I made it so that I can plan to buy stuff to start repairing. Some areas have developed hairline cracks in the concrete which makes me unhappy. Overall it's held up fairly well. The garden bed retaining wall suffered some damages from a dropped tree limb and careless weed whacker. Need to go back and relearn what to do and what concrete to use.
Ya, an old concrete guys said one thing you can always count on is concrete cracking. And thus they put expansion joints and saw cuts to tell it where to crack. On materials you could sign up for my free newsletters and see all the materials I use. Can't remember what issue but a quick look at the contents should get ya there. davehenderson.podia.com/mr-dave-s-news-letters Best of luck to you Mr. Disco! Cheers, Mr. Dave :)
Heh Mr. Dave, just curious. After the rocks are shotcreted, do you guys leave the inside pegboard and or burlap in place? I would imagine that in all the structures you build, you always leave somme type of an opening to remove the pegboard once the concrete dries. Also, is it okay to leave the rocks hallow inside, or should one fill in the structures with cement pieces etc.,. for more structural support of some degree...?? As always you are the best. As soon as i get some time, im gonna take one of your training courses. The time is approaching where i need to get working on my rebuild. Thanks!
Of course if you explained this stuff before, then i apologize for the repeat questions...
@@mikes2854 No worries Mike. You bring up good questions. Yes, I cut off and out all pegboard which can often be used again. Any burlap that can or should be removed is also cut out and sometimes burned out. However if leaving it in provides some support for patching into the void, hole or cavity then I'd leave it. All rocks below water I make solid and thus try to keep their size minimal. Everything else is hollow or solid if it's a small rock or stone. On the structural issues we throw in rebar everywhere and thus combined with the concrete nothing is gonna go anywhere. Could put a tank on top and it's just sit there... Lastly, I do fill up the insides of rocks but only as a way to remove all the extra shotcrete, (called rebound) and/or demo'ed old rockwork on remodels and rebuild. I'll jackhammer a big hole in it and then fill it up keeping in mind what potential lateral loads I might create to the oftentimes weak old faux boulders. So don't throw the big chunks in to hard... Anyway, hope that helps. Hope you can stay cool this summer! Cheers, Mr. Dave :)
I have 20 4ftx4ft blocks of styrofoam I got for $15/ block. It's for a 6ft tall 21ft deep and 25ft wide slope. I may need to take class and learn to carve it into some waterfalls.
Well ya got some "building blocks for success" there it sounds like. And the scale you mention implies a considerable size project. The questions that arise include, engineering, composition, structural needs and requirements, permits, inspections, amounts of concrete, rebar supplementation, design build plans and on and on. On the blocks, I've used foam as mostly filler in the past a few times only. Instead preferring to build my projects over the years with rebar, concrete and mortar texture coats which you can see in the videos on my channel. But back to the foam sculpting it us usually done with hot wires. See: www.walttools.com/search-results/?searchwp=hot+wires as well as electric chain saws, (very messy) and rasps... Walttools.com also has the coating material for foam which once applied, (it sticks to the foam with polymers) can then receive cementitious mortars etc. to achieve rocky looks and textures. On learning foam stuff www.verticalartisans.com/ has lotsa info on that. On good composition study nature where all the best rocks and waterfalls show the real thing! You can also check out my free downloads and more at davehenderson.podia.com if ya like. So there ya go. I hope this helps. Have a great day Jedi!
