Here's the interview Adam did with Jim Murray in 2017, when he talked about weapons and helmets and more: czcams.com/video/QXwe51lkJ6M/video.html
Wow I missed that interview! This is the best Sci-Fi show of the past decade and they do such incredible work with everything.
Ooh. On-point. Must away to see you in Tokyoooooo... Sounds like a good bit.
I would love to get into this line of work! I do this for fun already! I even have my own shop people call "Hobo Hobby Town" lol cause its almost all dumpster finds.. I call it recycling lol
I never heard of Expanse I didn't know what you were talking about until I see the ad under your video
Looks the place like mythbusters 🤔
As a scenic carpenter working on The Expanse, this was awesome to see some "behind the scenes" of another department. We are all usually working so hard that we never get to appreciate the work of the other departments. Thank you for this awesome expose
What an awesome job. Thanks to you and everyone involved with this show for making something so amazing.
Your comment reveals one of the millions of little things that we audience members never even think about--how much or how little to all the different people working on a show get to experience and appreciate each others' work with the exception of everyone seeing the final product? I wonder, especially since so many of you have all be working together on this show for so long now, if you guys could find the time and a way to have in-house show-and-tells or "job shadowing" or little department open houses. Not only would it be fun, but the fact that you're a carpenter commenting on props makes me think there'd be neat lessons everyone could learn from a little "cross-training." I guess at the end of the day, the show needs to get made, and there are deadlines...and with the show having grown, everyone has more and more to do in the same time, so I can see how it would be difficult to indulge yourselves. It really seems like everyone involved in this show genuinely enjoys what they do. I hope that continues for everyone.
*Madison Rallis* - Isn't it wonderful to see how all the parts come together into a synergistic work of art?
Thank you for your service. Fantastic show.
@@daveogarf it truly is awesome when you get a chance to step back and see the big picture and the final product
That was waaaaay too short of a show and tell. Could have watched a whole hour more of this.
Was thinking the same thing long before I'd even finished the 10 minutes of it.
Veritas. I'm for that.
yep
Yes
It's supposed to inspire you to build not binge 🤣
Today I Learned you can buy an exoskeleton suit
Yeah, same. Didn't even occur to me before.
Back in 2012 you could buy a Pilot-able Mech from a company called suido bashijuko if you have a few mill spare
I was literally gonna go look that up after the video.
They're basically just for better weight distribution. They're not powered, no motors or anything, just give you better balance and mechanical advantage for certain tasks.
This one just springs. One just came out recently that is highly powered. it's way heavier so it has to compensate for its own weight and it amplifies your strength by 5
"When you killed me at the end of season 2" - Adam Savage 2019 xD
He made it to Venus and it tore him apart.
@@I_NeedCoffee PM tore everything around him apart. Then Venus killed him.
They never actually showed the crew dying. The ship was pulled apart, not them. It also seems like they could still breathe since they weren't suffocating. They would eventually die from either suffocation after they use up all the oxygen in that space or from starvation, which are pretty lame ways to die given the situation.
We were at Ad Astra, three of us. We had bought flight suits from a surplus on Yonge St., we made our own boots. It was while Season 1 had just aired. We ran into a guy who was con staff (apparently does Anime North too) and he was kind-of taken aback by our cosplay. We did the boots all manual. Didn't know about the slap bracelets. We took acrylic, laid out LEDs from a pick-and-place roll onto solid core wire, and glued that down to the acrylic. Then used a red acitate sheet over that. Same CR2032 batteries, but we didn't have the sockets so we put them between the 2 leads.
This made them kind-of flaky, they would dim or turn off, but sometimes reliably. So you could stomp and make them turn on.
Conrad said he thought we look like we lifted the suits from the set. He can be seen as one of the belters in S1 and I recall seeing him in the end of S3 too. So I guess he's still working on the show. Hi Conrad!
THANK YOU AMAZON FOR CONTINUING THE EXPANSE
"found items" = "legitimate salvage"
"So what we did is we bought an existing exoskeleton that would be sold to like home depots or anything for enhanced lifting, so repetitive motions."
Hold up. The future is now?
you heard that too? he must be joking
He either exaggerated or doesn't know what the real world is like. Home depot doesn't use those things. Maybe one or 2 stores do but it definitely isn't common.
Yes those things exist, but no, nobody is giving them to actual working class people.
Well they are testing these things for a couple of years already in various industries like automotive, warehouse / shipping etc.
@@scottywills124 czcams.com/video/zLWuHo63C8k/video.html
I believe the founder/engineer/inventor there explains the cost set up. How a company essentially leases these suits from them and doesn't have to maintain the suits either. They are here and with IBM's new battery tech: gizmodo.com/ibm-research-created-a-new-battery-that-outperforms-lit-1840535845
Along with adoption of no rare minerals/low usage in batteries we will have costs down and capacity up. Possibly without the dangerous explosion capabilities of Lipo.
The future is now
5:29 Can't stop glancing at blinky lights
ZO RELAXEN UND WATSCHEN DER BLINKENLICHTEN
[Me at 6:15] "Oh thank you!"
The slap bracelets and the plexi idea is so cool, these on-the-budget ideas are life savers, thank you so much!
I love the fact that current advancements in tech is driving our ability to conceptualize future tech in an easier manner.
It is truly amazing how simple tech advancements have made prop building so much easier and cheaper. Just wait in a couple of years all the images on those coms and tablets will be from micro projectors that are giving an animated image instead of using acetate film.
Wonderful to see episodes like this where cosplayers can see into the prop makers mindset, and that the prop makers are increasingly aware of the cosplaying scene. A question Adam: It's very clear to see how the prop and effects industry has impacted the Cosplayers, but do you know of anything the Cosplayers have done that has impacted the Propmakers? Whether from a design standpoint or a "Oh hey, that's really inventive, I never would have thought of making that THAT way before"?
Maybe this could be an episode in and of itself?
Thank you! Awesome to see behind the scenes of the best sci-fi show out there!
Absolutely fabulous video and top notch tips. Thanks! =D
My family has been in the prop and mold making industry for about 30 years. We’ve all been watching you for as long as you’ve been on tv. My uncle even has been able to work with Jamie in the past, before you and him took off. Thank you for keeping the geekdom alive for me. You’re appreciated.
At first look at the thumbnail, I thought that was Adam with Mike Stoklasa, and I was super pumped. This is good too, though.
This and some builds are my favourite thing in Tested, it's truly fascinating how they build this stuff. I wouldn't mind an extended version of this with more details
I feel like 10 minutes does not give this segment justice.
I could sit here listening to these guys for hours...
Omg! I love you Adam! I so enjoy watching your enthusiasm and massive intellect!! Your bounce reminds me of a little boy in a man's body! Adore you!! So enjoyed this episode.
@RJ Original MOVIES ha ha. If only! No. I'm a very happy married woman thanks and I'm sure he is a happily married man. It's perfectly ok to feel affection for another. He is adorable!
This was fantastic. Thanks so much for sharing!
This was awesome, I'd love to see more of this type of content. And maybe a few more B-Roll shots of the props themselves.
Big props to amazon for continuing this show. I just wish prime was around when Firefly was on the air.
9:00 Another reason the show is great. Good story and writing coupled with the fact it is directly based on "sort of" plausible science makes it just amazing.
More of this please. I can't get enough of the Expanse props.
0:12 every time i was thinking about the background in your videos
it looks so often like the mythbusters set amazing
This is absolutely fascinating. I love this stuff!!
Fascinating!! I love these insights into the simple but ingenious ways stuff is brought to life - the snap bracelet lights and the plexiglass comms - brilliant!!!
7:03 love the RadioShack AA cell case with the power switch. Used many of those back in my day when I worked for RadioShack, when case nodding was really DIY. Late 90s-early 00s.
amazing show with amazing special effects and props as well as digital effects
I just started watching the show and I love it!
Two of my favorite things together, The Savage and The Expanse!
Love the books and the show!! so awesome to see behind the set!!
Thank you! I've been trying to decide how to do the boot lights and the HT for a few weeks now. Never cosplayed before, but I can't get enough of the Expanse!
I am soooo glad I came back and watched this. I won Clarissa's toolkit from the recent auction, and there are a couple little tab things that were tucked into some outer slots that were confusing me. Now I know they're the same cut-out slapband lights from the start of this video, all I need now is some batteries!
As a propmaker, what I'd give to be there and explore every little corner of this INCREDIBLE production. As some people says, this video is too short for the amount of awesome that the show holds.
Mentioning season 5 is coming makes me so happy
Ha, I did my com very similarly! I used a small premade led with a switch, mounted it at the bottom of a piece of plexiglass and used a printed clear sticker. Super cool! Love the show, thanks for showing this!
So clever! Love it.
Love the Expanse! It's a great show!
The Expanse effects are amazing. Every scene looks better than most movies, and it is so impressive that they can do that with a TV budget.
07:50 - woah, woah woah there!
Did they just brush off the statement that exoskeleton suits are common at Home Depot?!
Beautiful. Super entertaining and interesting.
Very interesting, loved it.
Super interesting. Did anyone else see them use an UE BOOM speaker as the bomb/rocket in the series?
Hypedoc completely missed that and I own that speaker :D what season?
"right right... green for you're connected to the ground..."
"um... red."
Well in his defense, GREEN usually means ON, while RED usually means OFF/Disabled. And magboots works when they are ON... so.
That's pretty fun. Glad you guys seem to enjoy your job. The Expanse show is great. Just started reading the books too.
Thanks for all the hard work! Don't forget to spend time with your families too! ❤️🙏😊
Top marks for The Expanse. Thanks for the post, Adam.
This was so cool!!
The roof box child freezer got me. And the camping lantern power module.
I remember seeing several characters drinking from the exact same collapsible drinking cup I have for camping! Great idea for a ready-made prop and it makes total sense in the context of the show, shame it pulled me out of the scenes for a moment because I recognised "my" cup in the future 😂
That was a fine trailer! Now, where's the 1½ hour movie? :D
Awesome peak into a world that, as a viewer, I've taken for granted far too much.
I love seeing adam genuinely happy and interested in the guest. Also prop building from existing objects is fascinating. The documentary about the restoration of the BTTF delorean from universal studios was so good "Oh yea, we got that part from an army surplus in 1984, good luck finding another one"
As a Newish Cosplay builder, I now can appreciate the “found items” concept of prop making. Since I began building, I can’t go into a store and just casually shop any more. I’m always looking at stuff with the intention of using it for one prop or another.
Don’t even get me started on movies and series!!! I can’t even watch anything without studying the bloody costumes and props!!! Aaarrrgghhh.
oiye! thanks for all your work on the best sci-fi show on tv! love it!
Just finished the expanse s5 (well up to date) and ive been loving these videos. I didnt get into The Expanse when it first launched but now im thoroughly obsessed and loads of my favourite youtube creators are too! another favorite is the spacedock ship breakdowns as they're hyper detailed and canon. Can we expect more stuff from you and the expanse in the future?
Really enjoy the show
Great behind the scenes video 😎👍
Please more of this. BTW, I love pointing out to people that your suit lights are just black diamond headlamps and your sticky bomb in season one is a black diamond battery lantern. Good work with existing tech.
I love reading the labels on the bins on the racks behind them. They say things like "Holden's helmet" and "shot glasses."
00:22 as a sound guy, I have always liked the use of Shure microphone boxes in the Galley of the Rocinante.
Jonny One-Truck ahaha
lol good catch.
Awesome!!!
8:57 Dear Star Trek Discovery, this. This right here? This.
Habanaero Jones - The other Star Treks are far from realistic too so why target specifically Discovery?
Hahahahah!!! That's like asking rain not to be wet. ;P
@@Krytern because the older sets were good/great for their time, while STD is outclassed by its peers today.
@@marcusbailey5450 STD looks pretty good.
I hope there's 10 seasons or more. Great show.
FINALLY !!!!!!!! THe Episode EVERYONE will WANT to watch!!!... Teh Expanse : HOW TO !... sooooooooooooooooooooo awesome.... love the expanse..everything looks so darn plosible real on the show... LOve the boot.hack.lights... soooooooo clever.... strip.n.repurpose in a way it was not designed for... lol... just my thing..lol..thanks
That’s so cool how simple it is I totally wanna make some stuff like that
'Tech'
- Jim Murray, 2019
That's also how the Star trek episodes were plotted. "Captain, we have to tech the tech!"
Been watching Expanse since it aired because when I heard of it it ticked all the boxes for a major science fiction space adventure show nerd like me, and when I found out Amazon saved it from being dropped I was so happy. Its great to see some of the behind the scenes prop designed they have used and honestly if there was ever a show I'd work on a cosplay for as of right now Expanse would be it because its an evolving changing show where you never know what you might see the next episode that you can use in your cosplay.
Those dimmers were RC4 wireless DMX. Could just see their purple label under the tape...
Oh man that room does look amazing. I could get into making those things
Now waiting for season 6👍❤️❤️
I LOVE seeing real-world familiar items repurposed into the expanse, as other things or even as themselves! Pretty sure I grabbed a flask the same as Murtry's in S4 (the GSI Boulder 10oz). I'm thinking of including it as a taken item with an Amos costume.
This is so cool
Ive never seen a home depot that uses exoskeletons but that would be cool to see
I love doing that! I go to Lowes to use objects for other purposes that it was designed for.
I've made a game of identifying as many found items as I can and this show is beautiful for that.
Glad I am not alone, walking around stores looking for alt use items for some project I am working on.
His face when he showed him the snap on bracelets was great lol he seemed to have 3 ideas of how to put a battery and bulb deal in the heel of the boot before his mind was blown 10/10
more of this, please.
Those comms are great
I don't know if it was this guy in charge of set direction, but that gunfight on eros had me rolling my eyes when the heroes took cover behind plastic totes.
Probably just because I work with those things every day, and I know they won't stop a bb. Much less a future tech space gun
Love all this stuff, spent all of my career as a carpenter but recently after working on set building for the BBC for a show coming soon, I've been wishing I'd got into this when I was younger.
Biggsy1970 how do you get into it? I have no real parents so no real guidance but want to make stuff with my hands. Is carpentry good enough?
@@CoercedJab I did it at school then went into an apprenticeship after leaving school, then learnt every day of my life since. I would say try to find a company that will help you. Just play around and see if you like working with wood you might not. Good luck
3:50 During my childhood, I would spend alot of time browsing through a hardware store, looking at little bits and pieces of things that I can potentially use for stuffs. really worth the time than playing video games nowadays kids do...
Awesome stuff. Love the comms. Wish we had real phones like that.
Nahhh. You wouldn't like it, not after the first "Wow! Nifty!" Having whatever is behind your phone showing *through* whatever is on the screen (or somehow projected out the side off the display surface) would get annoying really quickly.
Very cool
Was awesome to see you in the show Adam!
One of those videos where I keep thinking "no... NO don't be over!"
I think it's pretty awesome that that exact same LED strip that's in the bomb, I've got ≈15ft of it for my 3D printer and various other projects. Something as simple and cheap is amazingly useful for hobby projects and for multimillion dollar films.
Ask for a raise Jim! 👍😎
Ski boot liners would make for pretty good looking mag boots
love all these BTS episodes
The Expanse is awesome! :D
Prop Master: our secret is found objects.
Cosplayers: we already knew this. . .
Well this arived at a great time, I was just thinking of upgrading my martian marine cosplay...
So I just found out I need to "watch" 2 seasons of the expanse
2 seasons? You need to watch all four
@@Adrian-jn9ov 4th is out already? Dayum.
Alientcp It’s only on Amazon Prime though.
@@sittingstill3578 I have it. I dont really watch tv, so i didnt noticed, but last time i checked IMDB it was only announced. I suppose i checked too long ago lol.
Alientcp Yeah, S04 came out last week on Friday as a whole season, so happy binging! :)
Adam didn't die at the end of Season 2, he ascended.
they could sell these handheld terminals to the fan pages! I buy for sure! Nice!
