      Heheh I was thinking the exact same thing, I’m German and I always find it interesting how much Americans seem to struggle with their Vergangenheitsbewältigung. ;) It seems that it’s something that we as Germans simply learned to do way better due to WWII and what happened in the Third Reich and how our people had to deal with that in the aftermath.

      I find it interesting how many words Germans have that don’t have a proper English counterpart. I know that Scandinavians have a word that means something like “enjoying one another’s company in silence” and Japanese has “umami” for that savory taste but Germans seem to have much more.

    She's telling the story of any African American in the US. My recent DNA test said 65% African/35% European, and I have two Black parents. It was the first time that I was ever really confronted with our nation's history in my personal life. Being pulled over or called the n-word never stopped me. I graduated from law school anyway. However, my DNA isn't a statue that can be taken down and spirited away. This cannot be changed and demands that I find peace in the unrest.

  • @mistym0rning
    @mistym0rning Před 6 lety +62

    It’s always interesting to me how Americans make heritage and identity such a big issue. I think it’s because it’s an immigrant country where almost everyone is of mixed heritage (even if it’s mixed European) to some degree. And then they struggle with the fact that perhaps some of their ancestors did bad things. Hmmm... I’m German, my parents and grandparents were German, there were some Prussian ancestors in our history, but we’re basically just 100% German. And yeah, I have a great-grandfather who was in the Nazi SS, which is awful. But as a German we pretty much grow up learning that some of our (great)grandparents may have been complicit in some of the horrors of WWII. It’s just not something we can escape. I don’t get why it’s sooo difficult for Americans to accept that sometimes people you’re descended from did bad things. It doesn’t make _you_ a bad person.

    • @Dorian_sapiens
      @Dorian_sapiens Před 6 lety +3

      To your last point: it might be due to how religious the US is-specifically how many people are Christians and how much Christian ideas are ingrained in our culture-that many of us subconsciously accept the idea that sin can be inherited.

    • @drumjod
      @drumjod Před 6 lety +4

      It might depend on the sect, but I don't think Christians typically believe that sin is inherited from parent to child. There could be a lot of sects out there though, so make sure you're playing it safe and practicing enjoyable foreplay.
      Seriously though, I've also been told that I have mostly German ancestry. My grandfather fought as a US soldier against Germany in WW2.
      @Dorian sapiens, I personally don't hold any resentment towards the children of criminals. Can we all agree that children should be free of the burden of their ancestors?

    • @Dorian_sapiens
      @Dorian_sapiens Před 6 lety +3

      Original sin, the idea that we're all born sinful as a result of Adam and Eve disobeying God in the Garden of Eden, is one of the two or three indispensable central tenets of Christianity. I personally don't accept that it (or any of Christianity) is true, but there's no denying lots of Americans do. Still, that's just one hypothesis as to why people here are often unwilling to own up to anything negative about their ancestors; I could be wrong. :::shrugs:::

    • @mistym0rning
      @mistym0rning Před 6 lety +7

      Dorian sapiens
      Certainly, Christian ideas of original sin etc. could definitely be a factor in this. I think another huge factor might be the “origin stories” of American exceptionalism... the whole thing about the pilgrims and the settling of the continent and how brave those people were and how amazing it is that what they built would eventually develop into a superpower (which is true!)... but usually Americans like to ignore or at least downplay, to some degree, that even this part of history is tainted significantly once you include the facts of (attempted) genocide and oppression of Native Americans, the fact that large parts of the economy relied on slavery, the labor of other groups (Chinese and Irish building the railroads; somehow the white Irish people were eventually included in the “American” identity but Chinese people are still considered “Asian-Americans”...). There’s a lot to consider in America’s early colonial and settler history that carries on to today, and because it’s repeated in school education and families’ stories I think most people here grow up believing their ancestors were “heroic”, to an extent.
      So finding out that they (or most of them) were not “heroes” but probably flawed human beings, or in some cases truly bad people, must be a shock or disappointment to most Americans. Whereas in Germany if you have (great)grandparents that were alive during WWII you wouldn’t be completely shocked to learn that most of them were participating in _some_ aspects of Nazi culture to one degree or another (e.g. Hitler Youth).

    • @Cyromantik
      @Cyromantik Před 6 lety +7

      mistymorning195 It *is* shocking. When we Americans are being brought up and educated by the American school system we're made aware of many bad things our people and government did, but honestly most of our history gets whitewashed by the Scholastic history books. It's usually not until college that we learn the darker truths, and even then you can't get really down deep unless you take specific classes... You need to want the veil to be lifted, as society as a whole might be uncomfortable talking about such governmentally sponsored entities as the Anti-Chinese Union, bounties fulfilled by scalps and strings of ears, radiation/toxin trials, internment camps and a eugenics program that continued well into the 1980's to name a few.
      I consider learning about our self-perpetrated horrors to be a rite of passage, one that gives an American a much needed dose if humility.

      I live in Hawai’i which is about 80% Asian: descendants of Chinese, Okinawan, Korean, Malaysian, Vietnamese, Japanese. You’ll see hundreds of Asians with a few white faces doing Tai-Chi each morning in our parks. (It’s HARD!) We ALL walk everywhere or take a GREAT bus system of VERY clean buses with Wi-Fi, run on natural gas or lithium ion batteries, 2 year pass is $20 Most of us are naturally slim because of a vegetarian diet (Beef, poultry, pork and even fish--unless you catch it yourself-- is too expensive. Everything needs to be shipped from a minimum of 2,000 miles away. But it’s easy to grow veggies and fruit trees are everywhere.
      ALSO, the skin of Asian folks is naturally taut--doesn’t drop in folds and wrinkles like haole shin (White people skin.) I have 105 y/o neighbors that go shopping each day by walking 2-3 miles for fresh produce and flowers. AND for most Asians the paler the skin the better--so most Asian women use umbrellas to protect themselves from the sun.
      Hawai’i is the healthiest state in most polls and Honolulu was just named the cleanest city in America--again!

    I just moved to Oregon, it's gorgeous. I was horrified to find out that when it was granted statehood in 1859, Oregon's constitution forbade black people from living & working here, with a flogging for those who didn't leave within two years. People here are very kind & generous and they've made me feel very welcome, but I can't help wondering if a POC would get the same welcome.

      I have heard that, despite Portland having a reputation as an extremely forward-thinking place, Oregon as a whole is actually pretty reactionary, i.e. deplorable. Just what I've heard, can't say how accurate that is. I do know that they have two of the best senators in the US Senate, Wyden and Merkley.

    • @crystalpope2451

      It seems the struggle in Oregon reflects what's happening in the rest of America. White supremacist groups demonstrate in Portland & there was the very famous white nationalist murder on the Portland train. But, last year when Patriot Prayer tried to demonstrate they got run off, had to go and demonstrate in Washington. When the white nationalist on the train began verbally assaulting the young women there was no shortage of people to defend them. There's a barn right down the road that has "Don't Tread On Me" painted on the side in big letters and I haven't seen a single black person in the little town we live in or when in Eugene for business. But lots of folks that are politically active on Twitter are here in Oregon and of my neighbors that I know, none are Trump cultists. As it goes in the country, so it goes in Oregon.

Then, he asked what is the US going to do with 40% of Trump supporters in case he gets impeached. Alex’ point was that JBP cannot have it both ways. Trump supporters will have to toughen up too and accept the reality that obstruction of justice, if proven, is far more important than getting triggered by SJW.

    With little notice, President Donald Trump recently signed an executive order that advocates say rolls back hard-fought victories for women in the workplace. Tuesday's "Equal Pay Day" - which highlights the wage disparity between men and women - is the perfect time to draw more attention to the president's action, activists say. On March 27, Trump revoked the 2014 Fair Pay and Safe Workplaces order then-President Barack Obama put in place to ensure that companies with federal contracts comply with 14 labor and civil rights laws. The Fair Pay order was put in place after a 2010 Government Accountability Office investigation showed that companies with rampant violations were being awarded millions in federal contracts. In an attempt to keep the worst violators from receiving taxpayer dollars, the Fair Pay order included two rules that impacted women workers: paycheck transparency and a ban on forced arbitration clauses for sexual harassment, sexual assault or discrimination claims. Noreen Farrell, director of the anti-sex discrimination law firm Equal Rights Advocates, said Trump went "on the attack against workers and taxpayers." "We have an executive order that essentially forces women to pay to keep companies in business that discrimination against them, with their own tax dollars," said Farrell. "It's an outrage." Out of the 50 worst wage theft violators that GAO examined between 2005-2009, 60 percent had been awarded federal contracts after being penalized by the Department of Labor's Wage and Hour Division. Similar violation rates were tracked through the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the National Labor Relations Board. Now isn't that order very consistent with the sexual criminal confessions we all heard not once. but on two separate occasions during the Axis Hollywood bus. previous to that during his interview with Howard Stern. Former prosecutor Gov. FBI director Giuliani. Said those audiotaped criminal confessions were nothing more than locker room talk. Not according to criminal psychologist brain specialist those audiotaped criminal confessions were much more consistent with a jailhouse confession from one inmate to another. Or a prison reminiscence from one convict to another who are living out there sentencing in protective custody, for sexual crimes are classified as the weakest form of criminal conduct. Not to mention any other prosecutor in the country would take two audiotaped criminal confessions as enough evidence to prosecute. And then when you have 14 witnesses come forward and validate everything that was on those audiotaped criminal confessions.Would be enough evidence to convince any judge of a conviction. Well any judge except for that desperate week insecure impulsive poor specimen of a female judge that goes on and on about how great it is being a submissive trumpet blower. And you wonder why America has the highest violent crime rate in the world. You wonder why America has the highest drug addiction alcohol dependency in the world. And you wonder why America has the most overfed undernourished people in existence. is not all gloom and doom. We can deal with this situation. As a people as physically fit mentally sound and spiritually balanced Americans. At the same time we are dealing with the situation in life. Subconsciously spiritually there souls and spirits are being implemented with, all the pain suffering disease sickness illness torment and hunger that has been allowed to occur over the years manifesting into what it is today. Thanks to incompetent lazy ignorant reckless negligent vindictive criminal leaders supporters employees employers. And now going to get far worse if Donald Trump his submissive trumpet blowers desperately impulsive employees have their way. Now let us thank our heavenly father for allowing Ronald Reagan Donald Trump supporters followers employees like-minded people for subconsciously: coherently apparently volunteering their soul and spirit to function similar to an air purifier water filtration system steam cleaner rubber gloves sponge shield bedpan urinal ass wipes blowup doll. But plug tampon maxi pad diaper jump rope ankle weights wrist weights weighted vest punching bag so forth and so on. Etc. etc. and that is the short list of how their souls and spirits are being treated. Before we get into how their souls and spirits are going to be implemented with all the pain suffering disease sickness illness torment and hunger that has occurred over the years manifesting into what it is today. Keep in mind my submissive trumpet blowers the soul and spirit can endour one up to billions of years worth of pain suffering disease sickness illness torment and hunger .that is just a sample Of the miraculous power of spirituality eternal authority that exist beyond your comprehension for your life cannot commonly comprehend things past your life's expectancy. Now I wish and pray for my soul and spirit to be held spiritually accountable to the statements I proclaim. I guarantee you will never hear another body leader person of legal authority ever validate the statements they proclaim with that level of certainty. If the sun the father the Holy Spirit God the devil Lord Jesus or anyone else with true eternal power and authority over life and death. Felt differently about the statements on proclaiming the had four separate opportunities to keep me dead and silent. The bottom line is you're either part of the problem are part of the solution when it comes to equality between a man and a woman as well as respecting another persons physical freedom. See a dominant gentleman knows how to intelligently persuade passionately convincing a woman to have the desire to willingly want to share themselves romantically. your part of the problem are solution. Either way your being held spiritually accountable. One way comes with a pleasant form of rehabilitation physically mentally spiritually. And the other way is the opposite of the first way. Again I wish and pray for my soul and spirit to be held spiritually accountable to the statements I proclaim. I guarantee you will never hear another body leader person of legal authority ever validate the statements they proclaim with that level of certainty. One reason they don't know themselves therefore they have NO respect for themselves and can't respect others. Secondly is because they are not willing to hold themselves accountable to the way they live their life to the laws the put in place. For the laws they put in place will greatly influence whether you live and die Feeling accomplished being at peace. The bottom line is Donald Trump has been clinically diagnosed by scientists criminal psychologist brain specialist! Leading physicians As being physically and mentally submissive! To fill that massive void a weakness) His plan to stay on the top! Is by keeping the bottom sick week desperate hungry and malnourished and poor by recirculating dirty low-paying jobs that come from outdated power sources inferior materials and toxic substances. That have lived out there usefulness for they have been classified scientifically as petrified death! More commonly known as coal oil and gas dirtiest of all sand oil. Along with other toxic pesticides! Chemicals that never changed their killing composition. You cannot promote life by using a substance that diminishes the quality of our air water food and landscapes. Dirty low-paying jobs very few at that however will have a negative effect on hundreds of millions for only God knows how many generations dirty low-paying jobs that diminish the quality of our air water food and landscapes with the potential of causing environmental collapse there is no profit to be made in the demise of the planet businessman my ass! Just look at the BP oil spill. The man-made water crisis situation in Flint Michigan. The man-made water crisis situation at the military base known as Camp Lejeune in North Carolina. The fly ash spill that occurred from Duke Power in North Carolina. Those are a few examples. . . Of the irreversible damage that comes from working with outdated power sources inferior materials toxic substances. That have been scientifically classified spiritually validated as being physically mentally useless therefore have no true value spiritually. Now a dominant gentleman or lady that knows how to demonstrate high-class sophistication which is femininity at its finest!! for it is raw wild naturally hard-core organically appealing truly captivating absolutely internal eternally spiritually sought after by the gods and goddesses of the ancient royalty, warrior elite...... knows the best way to stay on the top is by keeping the bottom confidently rising in the most efficient way that is humanly possible, allowing each generation to become stronger smarter healthier happier financially better off. For that possibility of a reality to come full circle. The people must have clean high-paying jobs that used new technology. Allowing the people to fully utilize on advanced self sustainable renewable power sources. New Age top notch materials resources, that you could use this much is you would like or need without leaving any excess toxic waste behind. equally as amazing our products can be) Manufactured mass-produced in state of the art facility's I am talking about clean high-paying jobs from coast-to-coast globally. That improve the quality of life by enhancing maintaining the quality of our air water food and landscapes! Products Imports exports personally professionally To the highest degree of standards. Clean high-paying jobs that will be available every day of the week every week of the month every month of the year. Throughout their life allowing them to have a retirement that they will be healthy and wealthy enough to enjoy. xox XXL=00

    To me being American is to be mixed. If you are an American you have to actively try very hard to not have mix with other people groups. If an Irish immigrant only wants to marry an Irish woman so he marries an Irish American woman, she could have a little Czech, German, or Scandinavian in the mix as well as Irish. So you have to do a serious amount of vetting if you want a pure lineage.

    The part about young Russians being apathetic...have you met American young adults? The young people (here in the US) who are engaged in social movements (be it they are left,, center, or right leaning) are a minute fraction of the masses who can't be bothered to be involved. It's just that here (in the US) we have more soap boxes ( e.g. the Daily show) with deep pockets that make it seem there is as much civil participation than it really is in reality.

    Some people need to understand natives behave their own way because of cultural & historical reasons!! It can not be generaised right/wrong! the more we antagonize them the gap in the world is going to gets wider!! key is talk in plain language & have a lot of patience!! besides, sometimes its good to keep it neutral instead of defining right/wrong as there is no absolute right/wrong about societies!!

    Love me some Alex Wagner. Also... mixed raced people are the future, hopefully ending all of this racist bullshit. Though I remember Jon Stewart saying something like how people say that racism is on it's last leg and how if that is true that that is some fucking strong bionic leg.

    • @supwithu8583

      Strigidae Strigiformes The world is already mixed. The U.S is already mixed and that didn't get rid of racism. Ppl fucking eachother and making kids isn't going to get rid of racism, ppl deciding not to be racist will get rid of racism. There are ppl who have children by another race and are still prejudice towards that race. I've seen it. ALOT. There are mixed ppl who are racist towards one of their races due to being bullied and ostracized for it. Racism won't go away until ppl decide not to be racist.
