I am grateful to Trevor Noah for giving a longer more detailed interview of Mariska Hargitay's project, really listening and letting her string a few sentences together, uninterrupted. Now the interviewers seem to constantly interrupt and have the attention spans of guppies. Here we actually learned a very great deal about sexual abuse, law enforcement policies that do not respect victim rights (yet again), and the laxism about rapists that is really pervasive. And this is a worldwide problem, not just an American, sadly.
Sometimes I wonder whether it takes someone who was forced to take a backseat in life for so long (growing up during Apartheid in africa as a mixed boy) to learn basic human qualities such as listening. This me-me-me-problem is also a structural thing!

Whether this person has seen the show or not, the point he/she made is important and so very, very true. We need to use that money for much more important things. Such as clearing up this backlog of rape kitsch. I was one of the lucky ones. My rapist was caught the same day. And he plead guilty so I was not forced to confront him in court. Though at that time the sentence for sexual assault was ridiculously short, he received only 9 years and 3 of those was because he used a gun.

She's probably done more for victim's rights through her role on a TV show than anyone could've fathomed a character could do which shows just how impactful a character can be for someone looking for that connection and relatability. My partner was a victim at a young age, his spirit and strength to not only survive but to flourish into a loving and compassionate person is a beautiful thing. It’s one of the reasons I love him so much. Many of us are survivors of something, it is an act of grace that we should heal and be brave enough to reach out into the community. For a victim to go through this horrible horrific experience of the test and then.. nothing. Makes you think how many *don’t* even report it because they know nothing will happen.. definitely larger than what we’ve previously suspected.
earth ocean one would think so, out of shame and trauma.. but when the victim knows that even if they collect the courage to report, nothing will happen.... I can only imagine how much worse things are in reality. If it’s not 1/3 women, Is it 1/2? Is 3/4?
This number (or should I say these numbers) are based on surveys and studies, not police reports, which definitely would underestimate the real number. The studies ask a representative part of the population and then extrapolate. These studies may not be completely reliable either. For some stigma or shame would make it hard to admit abuse or assault even to a researcher.
+jaxvoice: I remember when people first started talking publicly about girls who were raped by a family member (I think the word incest doesn’t adequately convey the horror of what the raped person goes through, so I never use it) I wanted to shut myself up in a closet somewhere and never come out. I was so ashamed about having been sexually assaulted by my stepfather that I lived in horror that people would find out and then hate me forever. It took at least a decade and a lot of therapy before I stopped being compelled to hide this from myself, and even longer before I could tell people I loved. So you’re spot-on when you say that stigma and shame is why so many do not come forward. The brutality of it never really goes away...you just have to find a way to make peace with yourself, to forgive yourself and-it you’re really lucky-come to see it was never your fault.

We did not have any support system in the past, but we have some grass routes supporting groups now. I am sure it will happen in India. It might take long time, but as Ms. Hargitay says, "Never give up!".

after my assault i ended up back living with and eventually taking care of my father. I was pretty messed up and he was trying to understand what i was agoing through. He started watching this show and it helped him to help me.

Interesting... I have friends who have been victims of sexual assault, but I rarely know about it until they find out that other friends have talked to me about it. Once they find out that others have been OK talking to me about it, and that I never judge them negatively for it and keep their identities private, more are able to open up and actually have someone to talk to about it. It's tragic that there's such a severe stigma on it that victims feel they can't even tell close friends about it... =(
And even more tragic that there are actually people out there who would blame or judge victims...!
Michael Berthelsen most times they have been telling you for years. I've seen that happen by my own recollection of those who had a problem and noticing their actions. You have to be observant.
I'm 33. Most of the women I came in contact with are strangers. I've had more fuck buddies than relationships and more just friends. But over 90% of women have been able to speak to me. And I'm not this WHITE KNIGHT "I'm gonna take all your troubles away" type of guy. I'm just able to speak to people on a level that makes them feel like we've been friends forever. And that talent also comes from being able to see cues.
Keep up the good work for being a trusted person. And listen, hug, talk, apologize as if YOU were the person who did it..being able to separate yourself, but give t hst feeling of closure that they can't get anywhere else.

That is lodged pretty deep in our brains. We are primed to believe in a fair and equitable worlds. By following the rules bad things won't happen, but they will if we break them. Karma, "what goes around comes around" and all that.
Therefore, if someone becomes a victim of crime or misfortune, there must something they did wrong. We would be inclined to believe that the victim has a co-responsibility, deserved it, or worse is less of a human being than the rest of us. To some extent a victim will be taboo, tainted, shunned and untouchable.
My advice is: Never be a victim. Even if you are a victim, don't be one.
Maybe the worst part is that the victims themselves can fall in the same trap. Renaming victims "survivors" is good, but ultimately that is a word game, and "victims must be to blame otherwise the universe is capricious" is a strong instinct.

Agon Leed I think he's trying to explain the tendency to blame the victim from a psychological perspective. That the idea that victims are to blame (at least partially) is in the human psyche because of an instinctive belief in karma. And that sometimes victims blame themselves too, even though they should endeavor not to.
I think it's more an explanation of the underlying psychology than his personal opinion.

I had to pause, be nauseous, cry, and continue multiple times through this interview. It just brings up too much of the past and even still my own self doubts that what has happened to me should be considered traumatizing the way that it has impacted me. Life is really hard.
This is why we as women need the me-too movement since the dawn of time we have been subjected to abuse and it is time to right this wrong. We are never going back to the way it was and every time I see a comment about, being over the me-too movement I think what are you afraid of, why are you not standing up with women to help end this abhorrent behaviour, are you sitting in the dark waiting for a knock on your door, are an abuser yourself, if not why wouldn't you want a better world for your wifes and daughters.

I LOVE HER SO MUCH! And even more after this interview!! And I love Trevor for having her on. It fills my heart with joy to know that she made this documentary that is hopefully going to educate more of the public on this and hopefully make a real change. I first heard about this kit problem on SVU and started researching it and I've recently been seeing commercials for an organization that's trying to raise money to get these kits processed. This is SUCH an important issue. We have to consider our friends, family, our children are at risk, and they don't have to be if these people are finally brought to justice. It's just so incredibly inspiring.
Mariska is doing a wonderful job bringing attention to this matter. I am grateful for her work and dedication.

Sad fact, of all the women I've been close enough to discuss this topic with, only 2 have not experienced this. I am 52, not 18 so I'm talking a significant number. I love seeing people in the public eye truly helping others in a tangible way. Thank you to all involved. Those tests are horrific and when you know the people in law enforcement will never even see it makes it that much more horrific to go through.
More attention should be given to this issue and a long time ago. I contributed to the Detroit charity when I read about their backlog, a few years ago. I agree with Mariska Hargitay's statements...it was hard to fathom when I learned about this problem. Each State that has a backlog should be required to give a public statement to their communities. Victims should start following up with local police departments after going more than 6 months without an update on their case, because law enforcement has to be pushed to do their ENTIRE job it seems. Criminals are not the only ones that deserve due process; Victims/Survivors also deserve due process of their case. They deserve justice too. Thank you to all who are working to turn this wrong right 🙌👍❤ And may Survivors never give up that they will have justice...one example is the capture of the SC rapist in California--a former police officer! 😣

This woman is a literal goddess. It's one thing to play a character that raises awareness for such a pressing issue. Learning more, and then becoming the woman that can actually change the way the game is played, protecting the victems, speaking out on their, on all of our, behalfs? THAT IS NEXT LEVEL! Olivia Benson is my on screen hero. Mariska Hargitay is my off screen hero. BLESS!

Such an important topic, I wish that it was on public TV for entire country to see as I don’t have HBO.
I'm 31 and never watched law & order SVU until a year ago and I watched ALL 20 seasons! I thought to myself "how the hell did I not know about such a jewel of a show?" Now I anxiously wait for the new episodes. I love that it is current with the news and what the country goes through as we're living it.
I just donated to the Joyful Heart Foundation after watching this interview. I wish it didn't take an actress/celebrity to shine a bright light on this ugly truth. Victims should be believed because they're victims, regardless of whether they're perceived to be worthy or not (by law enforcement, society, et. al.). I didn’t hit the “thumbs up button” solely for the purpose of giving these two a pat on the back, because this was great. I gave it a “thumbs up” because: 1) Mariska has done extraordinary work to further life-after-assault, 2) brought the people to justice who committed these awful acts, and 3) she is doing for survivors what nobody has done for them before. I just love everything she is and what she does! ❤️
Amazing woman!! She has been through so much in her life, but always has a smile on her face and radiates the feeling of being humble and thankful for any compliment or praise she receives for anything. So very sincere!!!

Awe inspiring guest, excellent interview Trevor.
It's so wild to imagine that victims were disclosing their stories to her through fan letters. I feel like that must have been hard for her, that many of those accounts must have been very disturbing and hard to read and at times she probably did wish for more positiviity, but I'm proud of her for not shutting down in the face of these stories and turning it into a positive campaign to help others.

This is insane. She's the one working to make America great. I love America im just so upset hearing this story. I personally know 2 kids who were molested. The uncle was a Jehovah's witness and all he got was 2 years and he's probably out now. I was so sick when i heard how much time he got. Thank you for posting and for all the work she is doing.
This is very true. It seems that a lot of rapists only receive what amounts to a slap on the hand. The man who raped me received 9 years and 3 of those were tacked on because he used a gun. Not because of what he did. His excuse was that he had been smoking pot. Yeah, sure.

I have always hated and avoided watching any of the Law and Order/SVU shows. Mostly because I can't tolerate the reality. It hits too close to home, my being a survivor. But this is so awesome. Bless Mariska Hargitay and her foundation. Hopefully this will all help lead to a new future where females are valued equally with males.
