What kind of punishment from your parents was most effective when you did something they didn't like?

Last year, I got a hard slap in the face from mom, had to stay in my parents' room, and got selfish comments like "YOU ARE AN IDIOT!".
It is still in my head and I'm crying.

I'm sure CPS could give a long list of things far worse than any of this. I heard one case where a stepfather put a kid in the hospital with thirteen broken bones and both he and the mother were arrested for it. The kid did recover and was taken in by the deceased father's sister.

I've been the subject of abuse by my birth parents. 10, 9, 8, a version of 7, 5 was brutal for me, my mom stripped me to my underwear and forced me to walk 1/2 mile in public to a payphone to call someone who cares, this also goes in with 4 except we didn't have internet back in that decade, 3 didn't exist back in that decade either. I've had way way worse than these happen to me.

I got into trouble alot as a kid for things like: not being able to remember my work asignments in school, missing small lines of grass while mowing the grass, and missing crumbs on the floor or counters when cleaning the kitchen all things that require one particular thing... the ability to see properly..... my father constantly criticized and punished me over and over as a child for something i could do nothing about.... i needed glasses and he outright refused to take me to get my eyes tested... he would also physically punish me for squinting my eyes in an attempt to focus them a tiny bit better....
it wasn't until i was about 13 years old that my math teacher in school called my parents and threatened to call CPS if they didn't take me to get my eyes checked.... i also got grounded for "smart mouthing" my step mother when, after the eye doctor told her i needed glasses, i told her "see? i told you i couldn't see things"
the worst part is that pretty much everyone in my family wears glasses except him, even though he's supposed to wear them when he's driving and he again outright refuses to do so

I can't remember how many times I was told to go to my room, undress and wait for my parent, usually my mom, to return with a belt. When that happened, which was often, it was accompanied by lots of insults and worse.
This left me with a lifetime of problems such as being unable to trust people and a big
portion of being afraid of authority figures as well as being afraid of close relationships
    with women to this day.
I'm a lot better off than ever before but I'll never become the person that I should have
become because of the damage I suffered. back then. I also have lifetime ADHD.

When I was 7 years old my parents locked me in a car's trunk for 24 hours for spilling milk on the carpet. The scariest thing I've ever experienced, it was dark, my legs were cramping, boiling hot during the day, freezing at night, no matter how much I screamed and cried for help no one came, minutes felt like hours. I still have nightmares. I'll never do that to my kids.

The worst punishments is abuse disguised as “punishment”
I remember my Dad took me out for spicy chicken wings, and then took me out for ice cream (I later found out I’m lactose intolerant). Then, on the way home, he stopped at the bank for a deposit. When we were waiting in line inside the bank, I was extremely gassy and the line was barely moving. There was a large line of people there, and my Dad was so embarrassed of my smell, he loudly yelled at me to “stop farting” and made me stand in the corner of the bank, where everyone stared at me knowing exactly why I was there. The only crime I committed was being fed a poor diet by my parent, and it took me many years to figure out I didn’t do anything wrong.
“Punishments” like that were daily, and turned me into a shut in for many years with intense anxiety as all it did in the end was make me fear anything and everything that was outside of my control. And, worst of all, I felt like it was my fault for being this way.

Hard to believe a parent washed their mouth out with soap? This was common practice in my family, all my siblings and cousins. And the spanking/hitting with objects or a belt? All the time. Eventually my parents and aunts and uncles got wise and realized it’s totally unethical and made us fear them, not respect them or learn from our mistakes.

I remember a time when I was 5 or 6, my stepdad came home drunk and started screaming and hitting my mom and I was locked in my room crying and I put my fingers under the door trying my best to help my mom. My stepdad flung the door open hitting me in the head and beat me to the point where I had a severe asthma attack due to the stress and anxiety and had to go to the hospital. The doctors and nurses saw the fresh bruises on me and immediately knew it was my stepdad and called the police. He was arrested at the hospital for domestic child abuse and spent 18 months in jail. Yet my spineless mother still got back with him & the abuse continued to the point that my grandparents legally adopted me and saved my life. I'm still traumatized by his abuse and have nightmares about it. When I bring it to my mom (who is *STILL* with that abusive asshole) They play it off and say I was the problem and make me feel guilty and shameful for their actions. I was raised my serious Narcissists.

My mom had removed the door from my room on a few occasions when I was younger in order to catch what I was doing on the computer so much. She hadn't realized that chasing away all my local friends over superficial bs is why I was on my computer a lot. I had no one else to talk to and very few kids at school shared my interests. Which mostly revolved around drawing and to hell if I was going to be at school earlier or stay longer than I should have for a damn club. I was just on deviantart and a few other art community websites. Big whoop.
So I just rearranged my room where my desk was in the corner but I'd always be facing the doorway so I could click out of what I was doing or temporarily move onto something else whenever I saw her coming down the hall in my peripheral vision. I saw her taking my door and raised it with some feng shui. Having a helicopter parent was a nightmare.

to be fair to the parents that do this, this is an effective punishment, taking away your kid's privacy is something that they don't know they can lose, and it's pretty effective in my mind, but it's just that, a punishment. it isn't something to be done willy nilly like the mom of the person above.
in my opinion, privacy is an important thing to have growing up, since the absence of it can lead to some pretty deep emotional scarring, and even outbursts at an earlier age than the expected teenage years. and yes, some children will just go to other places to seek out their privacy. the correct answer to this problem is to encourage your child to freely share their thoughts and hobbies, not force them. make sure they understand that it's okay to keep secrets, even from you, but also let them know that you're ready to listen to them when they do want to tell you something.
also, don't punish your kid because "that's how my parents did it." the main goal of ANY parent is to help the kid grow up to be a better person than you were, not the same.

Bc my mom always thought me that if I respect others they are gonna respect me, so she never yell and I never yell, she always thanks me (for something) I always thank her.

my parents most common punishment is to isolate me from my friends. it sounds like a normal punishment until you hear that my mental health is so bad and i have so many conditions that i get su*c*dal after 2 days without my friends. they did this to me for weeks at a time. i barely survived.

One day I took my clothes off the line, they weren't cold, wet or anything, as usual my parents don't think I can do anything right or that I'm stupid or something, they think I can't tell the difference between dry or wet when I'm dealing with my washed clothing, I put the clothes in my bedroom or drawer, my Grandma asked me harshly “why are those clothes in there, why do you have those? " I simply said because they're mine
Pushed me harshly into the bedroom door, I was fearful and angry
Why'd you do that,I asked? APPARENTLY, SAYING THE CLOTHES ARE MINE IS SOMEHOW *RUDE* ...

    What I had experienced:
-My clothes were thrown out of the house, seen by the neighbors while being nagged at
-Had to kneel on either salt or monggo seeds with arms spread out wide and heavy books on both hands; needed to balance them and if one arm went low, I got hit with the metal part of the belt
-Stuff was thrown at me, for example, a remote control, a lotion, a slipper, or a shoe
    -Hair being pulled, slapped
    My brother experienced:
-Chili was swabbed on his outer lip when he cursed or said bad things
-He had bruises on his back after being hit several times with a food measure
    Other kids in my country:
-Chased in the streets or in the neighborhood with a wooden utensil, only to be hit when caught
-Hair pulled until they reach home
These are just some of the punishments given to kids in my country, it has been a lot lessened now than before for sure and some others aren't practiced anymore. My younger brother never experienced any of these punishments because my brother and I would educate and teach him calmly and diplomatically wherein he would learn but not be abused and traumatized.
