    still halfway through your video but just paused to say this: "You rule!!". This is adding a lot to my "to buy" list but it's refreshing to see a list of games where it's all about how much you liked it, how much you played it and how much it changed your view on BG. Very different from reviewing a game that came out a month ago. Thank you all for this.

    Great video! It's interesting to see video discussions like this of the older classic games. I realize I'm a little "late to the party" as I have only been in the hobby for a few years. I've loved board games since I was a little kid but I was brought back to the hobby by Wil Wheaton's TableTop. There are so many games on these lists that I have never heard of, and I hope I get a chance to experience many of these some day.

    Bohnanza is still fantastic. It's like tgat familiar card game that comes out without any effort but always fun. Settlers was also the game I was introduced to in the 90s, also lead to me finding BGG. But I find it a bit long now. I should probably try it again.

    Just a besserwisser comment to the discussion at 1:32:00 about which game that knocked down Puerto Rico from BGG #1: It was Agricola, and not Twilight Struggle. Agricola then hold the place 2008-2010 until Twilight Struggle replaced it.

    Two old games I love and that still come out are Labyrinth and Master Thieves (Meisterdiebe). Labyrinth is a family classic, now an app. Master Thieves unfortunately is a rare German game, only a few were made. Today I think it would be a successful Kickstarter project. Families love both of these.

    • @heccubus1
      @heccubus1 Před 6 lety +1

      Rik77 I own a copy of Labyrinth but have never actually played it. I need to get that in. Master Thieves I had the opportunity to play once and I really enjoyed it. I could never justify the cost or the size of it for my collection and it’s only gotten more expensive and I’ve purchased many humongous games so I should have gone for it then. Thanks for the note and for watching.

    That was fun! Though, I'm sad that nobody mentioned Twilight Imperium. Whether you enjoy it or not, it's one of those games that everyone's heard of as it almost defines "epic 4x" type games. Even though a lot of games do parts of what it does and some of them do those parts better, the epic whole that is TI really does make it a classic.

    • @Nain1982
      @Nain1982 Před 6 lety +1

      Michael Nickoloff did u go past beyond the first expansion? I will say that the game is quite complex and has some errata. But, after you understand the rules and know the cards, it's quite rich and complex. No game involves you better into Tolkien than this ccg. I played magic, sw from decipher and other ccgs, and although those games are easier to get into this one is unique for me. It's still to this day my favorite ccg.

    • @mjnickoloff
      @mjnickoloff Před 6 lety +1

      I think in the first wave off CCGs, we played: Magic, Shadowfist, Star Trek: CCG, Illuminati, Jyhad (Vampire: the Eternal Struggle), On the Edge, Doomtrooper, Heresy, Highlander, Kult, L5R, and Ani-Mayhem. (We treat Shadowrun, Doomtown & 7th Sea second wave). These all came out within a total of 3 years. Imagine us, all between 16-20 years old (with some disposable income) trying to buy, learn, play and collect 10+ CCGs. You can see how good games got lost. In our gaming group in Pasadena, there was a large number of ME players, but none really overlapped with Shadowfist (our 2 biggest non-Magic CCGs in that group).

    History of the World would be one of my top couple pre 2007. Also Axis and Allies is too classic to have been left out. Likewise, Fortress America. Nuclear War card game. Advanced Dungeons and Dragons. I'm sure some Avalon Hill war game or another - Advanced Squad Leader for me, once upon a time (I would never relearn it now); Bridge over Arnhem is a nice system. I don't think I would go there, but someone could have said Chess. Also, as a lighter wargame, someone could have chosen Memoir 44.

    Settlers of Catan is still a pretty good game...the only thing that I would say I don't like it will sometimes last a little too long...depending on who I play with we may play to just 8 points instead of 10 just so it doesn't take so long to play.

  • @gejyspa
    @gejyspa Před 6 lety +2

    Well, since no one mentioned Cosmic Encounter, you're just wrong. :-) Also, put me down for several other Sid Sackson games: Sleuth and Monad. Also, sorry Mike, but Empire Builder! (or other crayon rails). Some places where I agree is Ticket to Ride, Bohnanza (not necessarily one of my favorites, but I will play it if someone wants to), Magic:the Gathering. Some places where I disagree with your picks are (Settlers of) Catan. Never really enjoyed it. Didn't and don't see what people saw in it (maybe because I had been playing board games for several decades before that). And Vinci has an interesting story. When I first played it, I was like "Eh. it's okay, I'd play it again if someone really wanted to , but not my favorite". When Small World came out, I loved it to death, and only found out much later it's just a reimagining of Vinci (basically, when I pulled out Vinci to give it another chance after a decade, and was like.. "hey, wait a minute....") Of course, Small World isn't eligible for this list.
