- There have been many changes to the aviation scene over the last month since the COVID-19 pandemic took hold in the USA and Western Europe. But even before COVID, there were airlines and aircraft that have passed out of service over the last 2 years. So this film takes a brief look at some of the aircraft, airlines and activity at London Heathrow; that for one reason or another, are either rare (such as technical faults at the start of the take off, as in the case of Virgin Boeing 787-9 G-VBEL caught on film here) or rare because they are "infrequent visitors" to the airport - such as an MD-82 that spent a few weeks shuttling in and out of Heathrow to Copenhagen during the summer of 2018...or those that have "gone" altogether- both aircraft and airlines.
So you'll find in this film footage of aircraft / airlines or situations that are either "rare" or "gone" from Heathrow :-
Footage of Virgin B787-9 G-VBEL as described above;
A "Baby bus" Airbus A318 operated by TAROM flying in and out of Heathrow;
The Air Belgium A340-300 wet leased to British Airways to cover the down-time for the BA 787 fleet;
The MD-82 OY-RUT landing at Heathrow on a SAS Copenhagen-Heathrow flight;
A brief glimpse of the Amiri Qatar Airways A340-200 arriving into Heathrow;
A "farwell" to Flybe - a regular daily presence at Heathrow with their Dash 8s until last month;
Footage of Jet Airways and their daily 777-300 services that operated out of Heathrow.
And of course - aircraft / fleets such as the British Airways Boeing 767 fleet which was retired at the end of 2018; the Virgin A340s and the BA 777-200s G-ZZZA, B and C- all now retired. And reference to some of the now retired 747-400s, including G-BNLK, retired after 29 years active service with BA in early 2019.
Great video!
Great compilation, hope the aviation industry recovers after when the virus has gone👍
I really like the compilation
Wong kuli Thank you very much! I’m glad that you enjoyed it. Don’t forget to check out some of my other films on my channel if you have some free time over this long weekend! 👏

@@HeathrowAircraft indeed stay safe stay well
Ian. S Thanks Ian - and you too! 👏👍
Brilliant video… I remember some but forgot some as well! I miss the 747’s so much.
@Danno’s Aviation. Thanks a lot! If you need a 747 “fix” then search on my channel for “the complete British airways 747 fleet” ! Cheers. Steve ✈️
@@HeathrowAircraft Thanks Steve, will definitely take a look😎👍🏼
@@DannoAviation you’re welcome! Here’s the link. This is the longer film! czcams.com/video/ODzb1geqUVE/video.html
Bring back days
The MD80s are slowly disappearing :(. Only a handful of them are still in service.
@Mike5890 yes you’re right. That was the one and only time I’ve seen an MD 80 at Heathrow since I’ve been filming there 🥺
Wow the MD80 at Heathrow
@Aviation Gamer. I know! 👀👀👀
@@HeathrowAircraft so rare. Was it sas?
@Aviation Gamer. It was on wet lease to SAS I seem to remember…..
@@HeathrowAircraft ok 1:06 a fault? Oh no. abort. There’s a few faults on the 787 these days.
@@aviationin4k258 Yes it taxied back to stand and left quite a lot later that day. I see you’ve been back at lhr. Just going to look at your ATR catch - lovely!!
Just to say awesome viewing , can u explain to me queen of sky to A340 which one carry more and fuel saver????
Ricardo sam Hiya - the A340-600 is 75.36 metres in length (247 feet). It has a range of 14,450 KM (7,800 miles) and carries between 320 to 370 passengers. It has 4 Rolls Royce Trent 500 engines and uses typically only 56,000lbs of their certified 60,000 lbs of thrust resulting in longer on-wing life.
The Boeing 747-400 as used by BA is 231 feet 10 inches in length (so actually slightly less length than the A340-600) and has a range of 13,450 KM (again slightly less than the A340-600). Passenger load is anything up to 421 pax depending on cabin configuration. So in many ways the A340-600 is a rightful contender to be crowned “Queen” over the 747-400!!
Always love watching the A340s my favorite Airbus jet. Such a beautiful video
AvGeek NZ Thank you very much - I am the same - and they come in all shapes and sizes don’t they - when you look (albeit v. Briefly and a bit fuzzy at the A340-200 landing; then compare with the larger -300 of the Air Belgium and then the extremely long -600 like the Virgin A340 G-VYOU. Amazing variation! 👍
Rare and gone aircraft I've seen at LHR:
Air Seychelles 767-200ER
Air Mauritius A340-300/300E
El Al 747
South African A340-200/300/600
Finnair A340-300
Iberia A340-300
Sri Lankan A340-300
Thai A340-600 & A380
Etihad A340-600
Saudi Royal Flight 747SP
United 747-400
Turkish A340-300
KLM Fokker 70
TAM 777
Cathay Pacific 777-300ER
Malaysia a380
Air India 777
And many more!
@Ahyan Remtulla hi Ahyan - wow that’s an amazing lot of catches. I am super envious!!! 👏👏👏
@@HeathrowAircraft Thank you very much! I bet you've seen a lot more than these but may not have videos of them!
I faintly remember the 747SP Saudi but I do remember that it visited it 2012. (I also do have footage of it!)
The Air Mauritius A340-300E was the first aircraft I sat in! It was my first trip to Mauritius from LHR in 2007.
The Etihad was as common as the Virgin a340's!
Thai's A340's I saw around 2014.
@Heathrow Aircraft I do have one question: I remember always seeing the South African A340's (especially the 2012 Olympic livery ZS-SXD) near T2 but Ironiclly never saw them very takeoff, land or taxi. So my question is why did they arrive to LHR early in the morning and depart late at night?
Thanks!
@@ahyanremtulla Hi Ahyan ah you have some amazing aircraft memories there! Have you uploaded them - would be great to see them! Yes you’re right re the SAA flights. They have always been late at night departures - I assume that’s because pax can sleep for most of the service and be ready in the morning - without jet lag as there is virtually no time difference between the 2 countries. I miss seeing the SAA 747s that were often parked over at the BA maintenance base…..
@HeathrowAircraft -Thanks for the info! I don't recall the 747 from SAA cause they stopped visiting around 2010 I think! I may upload the Saudi 747sp video because I do have footage somewhere, i just can't seem to find it...
@@ahyanremtulla ah - hope you manage to locate it! Here’s a film (photos) from the late 1980s at Heathrow. You can see at 2:00 a South African 747 parked in the background!

In 2 years Heathrow will look very different and I have to say, a lot more boring.
I have a Jet Airways tribute coming too!
