    I started working night shift in a supermarket about a year ago, 11pm-6am. And I really love it. Take vitamins, especially vitamin d, make sure you get at least 7 hours sleep, and try to stick to a pattern even when you have a night off. I usually sleep for 3-4 hours when I get home from my shift, wake up and eat some lunch, then sleep for another 3-4. Pay is good, no managers, no customers, and commuting is so peaceful compared to rush hour!

    I have worked nightshift for 23 years. I find it less stressful because the people that are power hungry and cause alot of drama usually work the dayshift.

      I've noticed that for some people nightshift isn't a problem. The true night owls. For others it's a struggle.

      @@bilzy7727 I knew one guy who got a local driving job. It was paying $30/hour with some OT. But he declined the job after a few days of driving with a couple of other drivers during the first week.

      I enjoy night shifts more than day shifts. But it messes with me on my days off. It takes me my days off to recover. My motivation levels for life just get destroyed and I start to get depressed.

    I've worked nights most of the past 12 years. I've always hated it but now that I'm turning 40, I just can't deal with it anymore. I've been clinically depressed and pissed off since I went to nights 4 months ago. Combine this with my partner being a smartass, disrespectful jerk and it's honestly terrible. I feel like death warmed over every single day, even on my days off. I was supposed to be back on days a long time ago but they didn't keep their end of the deal so here I am, doing extremely dangerous jobs and driving a car on 3 hours of sleep. Screw this. Alcohol makes it much worse for me, insomnia in a bottle. Leaning on pills for sleep really isn't a long term solution, either.

    Been on night shift for over 10 years the daytime people of this world are somthing different. Ill stay at night untill I find somthing better.

    I am a morning person. Got a night shift job and it took awhile getting used to it. What makes it easier for me is having a solid exercise routine that is outside in the sun. Eat clean, No drinking coffee after my lunch, dark room, loud sleeping music and ear plugs. And go to bed as soon as i get home from work

    Night shift messes one up mentally and ages you along making your mood irritating. I've only done it for months but years no thanks. I need my sleep

    I remember going from nights to day shift for 2 years. Day shift, I couldn't sleep for more then 4 hours, most times 3 hours at most. Night shift, I get a general 6-8 hours. I also went from 85-87kg on night shift to 99.5kg on day shift. Literally had the opposite effect

    When i did night shift i would eat a small meal after work in the morning keep sun exposure to a minimum and sleep. After waking up in afternoon i would get lots of sunlight workout and eat my big meal. Than i would fast and not eat again untill morning, got me through the night shifts. Back to day no more night shifts !

    The real solution is a career change. I tried night shift work multiple times and for about 20 years of my life night shift work was mandatory. It destroyed my health and has irreversible effects on most people's health regardless if you following the countless CZcams suggestions. I quit my night shift job and make more money than I made dealing with nigt shift work. I'm in bed now and thankful I am not at work. Life is to short. You end up sleeping on your day off to recover.

      I'm opposite. I tried day shift for 2 years and couldn't get more then 4 hours of sleep a night. Sleep on night shift, I generally get 6-8

      I agree 100% I am currently working 7pm-7am for 15 months straight as an R.N....I have changed physically, mentally & emotionally... Depression, anxiety, weight gain, migraines, and total personality change has happened! As of 1 week ago, my Depression was so bad I decided to apply for a day shift position, taking less Money. And that is ok! My health means more to me than any amount of $$$
      The thing is, I always got between 7-9 hrs of sleep...exercised and ate healthy! So, this proves nothing..... night shift is horrible for you no matter what!!!
      I start my new day shift position in August, and I already am feeling better, and the feeling of dread and doom is slowly subsiding. 😇

    Great video! Those studies done corresponding to the negative outcomes of night shift were done on shift work, not just night shift. I'm glad you discussed permanent nights as that is a big difference compared to shift work. We need a study devoted towards the effects of permanent night shift with participants having enough sleep.

      I agree. Not sure there are too many motivated researchers who want to stay awake at night to undertake the study. But I'd be very interested to read about it.

      Unless someone working only nights stays on that same awake all night, sleep during the day schedule during their days off from work, it’s basically the same assault to circadian rhythm as shift work.

    Love this video!! Finally a positive take on how to combat some of the downsides of night shift working. I did nights three years ago and change of circumstances is taking me back to them soon. Three twelve hour night shifts a week. Going to try chunking them together so that I’ll get a week off in between. This video helped me to focus on the things that ARE in my control to make the switch smoother and more sustainable! Thanks so much!

    I've been doing night shift for 15 years so far. I feel some of the affects but it's what I have to do for my family. Just do the best you can is all you can do. Some of the best workers in my opinion are on the night crew. Plenty of Day ( walkers ) not workers lol.

    I have really bad depression and anxiety and overnight shifts made it worst for me . I loved the work I did/stocking, due to no customers , but I would wake up from a nap with bad anxiety and felt like crying. I liked it but it wasn’t healthy for me

    A strategy I would suggest is. Say you work from 10pm-6am like I did. Go to sleep from noon-8 and do all your evenings tasks (chores,gym) in the morning

      If that works for you - awesome. I was so tired when I finished work at 7.30am and needed to sleep pretty much as soon as I got home, but if doing chores/exercise works for you and you're still able to sleep from midday, that's great! Thanks for the suggestion.

    I’m currently working in my 6th year of midnight shifts (9pm-5am). Basically I’m stuck with it until retirement because management is eliminating daytime shifts. Like most people, my health is taking its toll, physically, mentally and emotionally the longer I work this shift. As a result, I’ve become sleep deprived, irritable, fatigued, gained weight, and depressed. My family refuses to acknowledge my issues that I’m dealing with and tells me to put up with it until retirement which is another 20 years away. My wife shouts and blames me for everything, even threatened to divorce me. My life and marriage will end up in shambles while continuing to work at my job. The income currently covers basic expenses such as food, condo fees, insurance, transportation, utilities, etc. At this stage in my life, I don’t know what to do and feel like ready to give up.

      Hi. Thanks for being vulnerable and sharing this with us. Sounds tough and a really hard situation to be in. Few suggestions; Can you chat to management and see if there is any flexibility in shift times/day/hours? During downtimes could you look for a new gig which is a little kinder on the body? Though stressful, 20 years is a long time to be miserable.

      @@theothershift Thanks for replying back. I have already discussed with management about that and here’s what they said. There’s not going to be a day shift as it’s been eliminated. This night shift is the only time available and there’s not going to be any changes to accommodate me. So take it or quit. Then I had to request the union for help to intervene but they couldn’t get management to accommodate me for different hours. I did look around for a new gig, but the wages are quite low considering how ridiculously expensive Canada has become to live in. Quite the struggle in here. I appreciate your suggestions 😀

      That don’t sound like a supportive spouse listen u only have one life and 1 body and u need to take care of that I’m currently planning a strategy to quit my night shift job because I’ve gained weight and it’s taking a toll on my body yes this is my main resource but at the end of the day I can’t let the job and family views ruin my life find something that works for u regardless put some money to the side while u figure out what to go at least 6 months worth and cut back on a few expenses to save then take a month or two to get a break and find a new source of income it’s a job not the end of the world and go to marriage counseling because that’s ridiculous

    I really don’t mind working nights when it’s during the week. As long as I keep it consistent when I go to bed I feel generally fine. However every weekend my BF wants to get up and do stuff and we flip to days. But my body can’t sleep for more then 4 hrs at a time while I’m flipping. Then when the week comes back it’s playing catch up on sleep. I have no real energy for working out. I constantly start things and then fail to continue. I’m super frustrated at this point. Since working nights for the past 3.5 years I’ve been gaining 5lbs a year. It’s not stopping and if I don’t do something quick I may have other issues.

      Thanks for your honesty. Consistency is good, your body appreciates this.
      The items I would consider at this point are the following;
      - Caffeine - are you avoiding it 6 hours before you sleep?
      - Are you using all the sleep aids possible to stretch out that 4 hours sleep? We have other videos on this.
      - Are you getting enough vitamin D? Have your levels been checked lately? You may need a supplement if you can't get enough.

      - Are you drinking enough water on night shift? Aim for 2L.

      I'm feeling you Chris. If you can focus on one thing, let it be sleep. Get some sleep aids if you need and focus on getting 7-9 hours where you can. Lots of water and some sunlight between shifts helps too. Best of luck to you.

    I can only get about 4-5 hours of sleep. I have 3 kids and lets just says i am woken up earlier than i would like and end up waking grumpy. I have been on a night shift about 2 months now and i have become more depressed and irritable and just overall hating my life. But i dont have to deal with people so it was a win lose/situation with the shift differential also. I want to go back to days for my health but there are more cons then pros working days.

    I've worked nighshift for 12 hours everyday without offdays for 6 months, and i kinda loved it. I don't have to go out and "socialize", people wouldn't expect me to so that's a plus. The schedule suits me as a person, and even now having dayshift, i immediately go up to my room and just spend time with myself. Though people would come and bug me to hang out etc. I guess graveyard shift is a dream for introverted and weird me. 😅
    Plus: no bosses and manager working during the night. It's all calm and peaceful.

    hey guys. Long comment , but need some advice. I recently switched to 3rd bc I thought it was a good idea since i thought I only need 5 hrs of sleep after work and I can have free time during the day to hang with my family and friends before work but I just realized that I’ve made a big mistake. It’s not like I was forced to go to 3rd. I went bc I thought 2nd was eating up my free time and 1st was filled with people. I really feel like I made a mistake and i don’t think I could stay in 3rd for so long. My manager negotiated with 3rd to put me there bc I asked to have weekends off because of church and he actually made it happen. So they hired a few newbies for 2nd and I feel like im completely stuck in 3rd now. When I told my 2nd sniff leads goodbye they all said if I ever want to come back they would pull some strings to get me back. But I feel like I’m completely stuck here now. Should I eventually tell my manager that im physically suffering from 3rd and I didn’t think I’d be suffering this bad? Or should I wait it out for a few weeks or months until I can tell my manager or leads that I can’t work 3rd. I feel like im stuck now and I can’t quit my job because it pays really good and I work from home.

      Personally, I would work it for at least 1 month . Since they pulled strings for you. It's just out of respect. Then, if it's true that you are feeling physically bad and can't handle it, then tell them the truth. This is coming from someone who's been working 7p-7a for over 15 months straight now as an R.N.
      I've recently requested a day shift position and taking less pay... I start in August and already feel relieved 😌

    Been working night shift 1030pm to 730pm don't mind it at all. Place is quiet and don't have to deal with people. Go home get my 6 7 hours of sleep wake up gym and still spend time with my love ones before work. Plus I have weekends off which I usually sleep normal hours like a baby.

    Funny how this has just popped up now. I've just quit working nights after 8 years straight, my body was telling me the oppersit. I couldnt do it any more, day work / routine is for me.

    How is our digestive system snoozing if we are up and about and use to being up and about? I have never fully understood this concept and I would like to challenge it as when I get up to begin my shift I am not hungry but when I am working I am feeling ready to eat. ???

      Hi Milly, thanks for your comment. I appreciate the challenging me :). 

As I understand it, our digestive system is in line with our circadian rhythm which gets triggered from the sun/moon - i/e weather is dark or light. Our bodies are biologically programmed to not expect food when it's dark. Even though we are flipping things around when we work nights, we cannot permanently change what is natural for our body and it will always fall back into what's natural (though this can take time, particularly for permanent night shift workers).
      The reason why you may be hungry to eat at night is potentially due to sleep deprivation. Your body is craving sugar/food for an energy boost because it’s tired. Our appetite hormones are confused, sending you messages you want to eat because it’s looking for a way to keep you awake overnight. If you did sleep well, you may be thirsty but you’re getting signals to eat instead? Also, when you do eat when the sun is shining are you eating a well balanced diet?

    Hi all, i am a mom of 2, one high school non licensed and one 7yr old im working 2 on 2 off 3 on, 2 off 2 on 3 off repeat. 12 hr shifts, 6pm to 6am. I can't get to bed until 9am getting kids to school and things ready for the day then I'm up for 230 to get kids off bus. I am open to any advice. Struggling alot

      I have been working nightshift tuesday through friday since this past may. my supervisor wants me to pick up the extra day on monday but i am going to have to tell her that i will just keep the 4 days instead of working 5. I already feel tired on my weekends and that extra day of rest helps out tremendously. If i went 5 days straight it would feel like i am in constant catchup mode which even i know is not healthy. Besides i want a day on the weekend to do what i want. I dont want to just go home on friday morning and wakeup a few hours later on sunday night still tired ready to dig my grave deeper.

Sleep deprivation is no joke so if you are constantly not getting enough sleep it can lead to negative health outcomes as we explained.     Rotating shift work is what's miserable and dangerous in my opinion. A consistent schedule is more humane.
