about slowing down cars, as a canadian that lived in canada, germany, paris and england, i can tell you what the issue is for the speed in england: I honestly don’t think its speed. but i’ve never felt more in danger and almost getting hit anywhere else but london! i have experienced that in britain the cars act as they own the road and minding the pedestrians are not part of learning how to drive. in other countries regardless of the speed limit, cars are always at the lookout for pedestrians, in other words, the law is pedestrian always is the priority to be kept safe, doesn’t matter if it’s a cross walk or not. so the cars look and slow down as soon as they see someone ahead, regardless of their speed. in london i have not seen cars slowing down when they see pedestrians, it seems it is not part of their trainings and i honestly think this is a fundamental issue in driving in britain not what kind of car or speed. as a canadian not once i felt scared to cross the road all the years i lived there but london, i feel scared every time i cross the road even if there is a cross walk and almost got hit once. cars need to change their attitude or the laws need to change.

I was saddened listening to the callers describe the ways in which social media has destroyed their child's life. I certainly agree with the thinking that there should be regulation at source, just as there is with cigarettes and alcohol, to help combat this issue. However, where is the digital citizenship education for students, parents, educators etc.....? Digital citizenship won't solve the problem, but it will give teenagers and their parents a head start at the very least!!!

Bullying it seems is still not dealt with sufficiently in schools and yes I do think probably many schools have got so many other things to think about and are overwhelmed with the amount of issues kids might have from poverty to mental health and then on top of that trying to educated them.Funds need to be in place for mental health and welllbeing and also more means to deal with bullying, talking about bullying and how to deal with it and why people choose to do it and what it looks like etc.
There needs to be funds put in place for that emotional and psychological care and wellbeing because in the end it will help with educational achievement and also long term health outcomes and so many other things.
They have to invest more in the kids whilst they are young and can learn coping skills and about mental health and to recognise when they need help.

2:16:43 "...if you can't prove something, then it shouldn't be a factor at all in assessing asylum seeker status..."
The caller is 100% right. If a claim can not be proven or falsified then the claim is unsound, it is thus unreasonable to determine the veracity of an asylum claim based on it.
Everything he said in response, unbeknownst to james, actually proves her point. For example, james cites the unfairness of the Spanish inquisition and the Salem witch trials. They were based on unfalsifiable claims that the caller said ought not be part of asylum assessment. She rightly believes (like the courts) that evidence ought be testable, or to put it another way, falsifiable.
The caller is correct, james is wrong, he owes her an apology.

The issue I have with the 20 mph speed limit isn't actually about the speed. It's about the pollution. ICE cars travelling at 20 mph pump out significantly more pollution than at 30 mph. It's due to the gearing and also the increased time it takes to travel a distance put together. All cars built in this country were built to travel at 30 mph very efficiently due to, ironically, emissions laws. It may save 6 people's lives a year in pedestrian collisions, but I believe the increase in pollution could potentially cause more damage to health.

Maybe there's another side to the social media story. I just want to share this, although I understand that positives are perhaps more rare than negatives. When our daughter was fifteen she had been so badly bullied at school that we had to take her out of it and home-school her for a year. She had long suffered from anxiety and depression and found it extremely difficult to find friends and even more difficult to keep them once she had. Social interactions were almost impossible for her, not least because of her anxiety and also because we live in a remote rural area. She became suicidal and then, when she was at her lowest ebb, she discovered online communities of people who shared her interests and concerns. She Facetimed so much with people from the US, Ireland and the UK they became her friends, talking her through her situation, sharing teenaged things with her at a safe distance so that she didn't get hurt so often. She formed bonds that continue to this day and it was the start of a journey back to society for her. She is back at school (she's 18 now) and doing well, she has friends and is in a long-term relationship and getting official support for her mental health problems. If it wasn't for social media, I strongly believe that she wouldn't be here.

They are more dangerous to both pedestrians and more conventional height vehicles. Regards pedestrians I refer you to the caller whose wife suffered severe injuries from a very low speed incident. Generally pedestrians are more likely to go under high vehicles rather than roll onto bonnet of low ones. With vehicles an SUV's collision protection generally sits higher than similar parts of regular height vehicle so is more likely to intrude into the passenger compartment of the lower vehicle in a collision (or worse drive over which crushes the lower and rolls the SUV). I do wish to make one last point. There are very few entirely poor cars out there but almost every one can be a poor choice depending on the intended uses
