  • Check out my FREE 4-Part Confidence Workshop! - bit.ly/45zqBIW
Experiencing manipulation and betrayal is a painful journey many of us know all too well and can really leave you questioning your judgment. But what if you could see the signs before it's too late?
Today’s guest is the ahhh-mazing Annie Sarnblad, a global expert in reading facial expressions and a literal human lie detector. She's able to recognize thousands of facial expressions and she’s decoding them in her new book, “How to Become a Human Lie Detector” , so you too can recognize the red flags and listen to your gut before you attach to a person (romantically, financially, or otherwise).
    We go deep into:
    - How facial expressions reveal the raw, authentic feelings someone has
    - How to spot a liar in 2 minutes
    - The secret to spotting true arousal in their eyes
    - Unmasking deceiving sweet talk
    - How to listen to your gut feeling again
    - Signs of predatory behavior
    - And more!
From the subtle twitches of the eye to the slight change in tone, every detail matters when it comes to deciphering the truth.
Whether you've been burned in the past or just want to be more discerning in your relationships, don't miss out on this opportunity to equip yourself with the knowledge to navigate relationships with more confidence and clarity in how the other person really feels.
Because your mental, emotional, and physical safety is absolute priority.
Remember, trust is a two-way street, and with the right tools and understanding, you can rebuild and strengthen it with the RIGHT people.
    TIME STAMPS:
(02:23) How to recognize predatory behavior.
(16:58) How to trust your instincts, listen to your body, and don't second guess yourself.
(54:51) Why context matters so much when reading facial expressions.
(01:09:54) What makes us blind to the rather obvious red flags.
(01:14:09) The keys to identifying toxic people and stop being taken advantage of.
    ANNIE SARNBLAD QUOTES:
"The easiest expression is that bad bunny rabbit little twitch. You see that little hop of the nose and somebody is saying a positive while showing a negative." (21:12)
“Unless we can be real and authentic with somebody else, we can’t ever feel loved.” (22:36)
“Learning these facial expressions gives us feedback in every human interaction, every face to face interaction we have. And it just makes us better listeners, and it makes us better at love." (57:40)
“When we're emotionally or financially invested, we don't want to see the red flags. We sometimes make a lot more decisions with our emotions and then we back it up and we justify it with our rational brain.” (1:09:54)
Annnnd… while you’re here I have an extra bonus for you! I’ve added this fire a$$ episode with Audrina Patridge. You may recognize her from MTV’s reality show “The Hills”, but more recently she’s sharing the stories from that time in her book, “Choices: To The Hills and Back Again”. In this bonus, Audrina shares how she was able to stop being a doormat and how to spot toxic people before they can ruin your life.

I was just explaining this to my brothers! 😆 women know when something is wrong for them but they aren't taught how to believe in that instinct because they hear "you're just being emotional" so often growing up. So they second guess themselves and get caught in bad situations because they don't know how to trust themselves

      No, it's on THEM.
Yes, we need to learn to see the tell-tail signs of abusers.
However, their abusiveness is on THEM.
My mother (gaslighter extraordinaire) berated me and called me stupid for falling prey to my narcessistic ex. But my mother is a narcessist herself, which is why I felt drawn to my narc ex to begin with. Because narcessists felt like home to me.
Eventually I FINALLY learned to tell the signs, to set boundaries... I'm STILL struggling to stand on my own. That's hard to do when you've been sabotaged and undermined your whole life. But self confidence and independence is a goal worth struggling towards.
There was a time period when I couldn't trust ANYONE. Not even myself.
It can take a long time to learn to trust yourself when you've been gaslit your entire life.
Victim blaming and perpetual self-gaslighting will not help.
They gaslit us. Let's not continue to gaslight ourselves for them.
The abuse is NOT on us. It's on THEM.

Same. A lot of the old energies from the. Generations b4 that leaks down to the next. If you truly care(as a parent), you try to eliminate what YOU KNOW WAS WRONG AND ELIMINATE IT FOR YOU OR YOUR CHILDREN! You don’t keep the negative things, emotions, physical abuses, gaslighting, chemical dependency or something as eating healthier. I did it all and still got nailed down to the ground. Envy or defensive behavior is completely normal, they then feel attacked, ring around the Rosie….you get the backlash. It’s a cycle you need to just completely break if you can’t eliminate the situation in a civil manner. You’re NOT ALONE!!! ❤

My intuition is always right. Annoyingly so. Everytime I've gone against my intuition it goes badly. Because I'm a scientist I have unfortunately learned to discount my intuition. But, now I'm working hard to develop my intuition because it gives me such accurate information. Others often discount it as well, but now that I know I have this ability, I want to develop it to enhance my life. I have made so many mistakes quieting my intuition and ignoring that voice telling me I need to listen. I'm done discounting that inner voice. This lady is spot on. Congrats on over a million followers Lisa. I do watch Tom's videos, but I prefer yours. You have more female empowering guests and that is what I need and want to hear. I have Asperger’s syndrome and my facial expressions don’t match with what I say (or feel). People often act as if I’m lying when I don’t. I feel like she presented it a bit black & white 😢 Asperger’s is not so uncommon in our society and not everyone will match their body language to their feelings!!! It’s doesn’t automatically mean they are liars

Point taken and important to make….you are trying for understanding and that matters so very much.
I know someone like that and he is of a generation that would never have diagnosed him and he has a lot of pride so he wouldn’t admit to a short coming (that likely more about a sort of Narcissim cause it is pretty extreme) but i feel he tries and mostly i like that he isn’t manipulative (part of not being socially sophisticated which i am not either for other reasons). Also he is an Aquarius! LOL.
You are not alone in noticing the black and white aspects, many just won’t bother to comment and almost did not till i saw your comment …we humans and ambitious americans especially want quick fixes and in our rush can leap at fast over simplifications.
Also people can be frightened to show emotion in a country and culture that says happy is all that is acceptable and violence too often; two extremes without much support for nuance and feelings like fear, grief and even anguish and also the need for community not just so called self-help.
And she starts of about wealthy “high powered” people as if they are the most vulnerable when in fact people who are poor and other-abled are too often more vulnerable. Also sort of funny…spot a liar in two minutes but watch a two hour video in order to do so?

People frequently misinterpret my feelings or intentions because of my facial expressions. I've been asked several times why I'm upset when I'm not. Or when my employer was angry with me, she wondered how I could be so chill when everyone else was upset about what was happening at work. I explained to her that just because I don't freak out doesn't mean I don't care. My own family was shocked they didn't understand I was emotionally damaged because I smiled when I should have been bawling my eyes out. I don't know if this is because some folks can't interpret microexpressions or my expressions are muddled.

Great show. Trust starts with you. If you learn how to read yourself and trusting yourself with that, trusting others becomes a mute point because you can feel safe to stay in the present moment and take it from there. We are thoroughly trained to get information from the outside. Reading yourself is often more reliable and much simpler once you get it down. How do you feel around controlling people or around your best trusted friend? Are you at ease or in your head... etc? Trust with other people needs to build over time by them coming through for you. It doesn't work when you just met someone. For that you need your discernment and know how to read yourself.

Unfortunately it does not start with you…sooooo individualistic. Human brains take the longest of any animal to mature and are subject to change throughout life more also. We are highly dependent upon the input of others…it starts with others and so when damage is done by others if significant enough and not counter balanced then it takes others for us to heal…not always possible but as a species we’ve barely acknowledged our vulnerability and thereby miss out on our power to influence. So so tired of the American myth machine.

Yes with "What did I do?" when someone walks away. It's not MEANT to be all about me. For me, it's from having been in a relationship where I NEVER knew what I was going to get in trouble for, when it was going to happen and why. It's TOTALLY a trauma reaction, at least for me with PTSD, and it comes across as making it all about me. I hate that's the way I've been after that. Insecurity and trustworthy problems are prominent. HOWEVER, this is something I really do need to hear. It's these things that I push relationships away ........ at arm's length ....... which isn't fait to the other BETTER person. YES, communication is KEY!

    • @liquidbraino
      @liquidbraino Před 9 měsíci +2

PTSD will cause people to avoid things that they would otherwise want to do or love. Avoidance behavior and self isolation are both symptoms of PTSD. It's tough to find self love when you have PTSD and it's tough to love someone else if you can't love yourself first. Not a narcissist kind of love but a genuine willingness to be good to yourself and take time out of every single day (preferably in the morning) to get in touch with yourself; meditate and just look inward; see what's there and take whatever steps you can to make whatever adjustments are necessary. The thing about PTSD is that it's not enough to just find equilibrium or "homeostasis" - you have to find your bliss and then stay there. You have to move inward before you can move onward.
There's things I have to do every morning just to center myself; just so I don't choke the shit out of somebody later in the day. Figure out what makes you smile; what makes you laugh what helps you to find joy. I go out and feed squirrels every single morning before I fully start my day. I also do live theater and take acting classes because I've never felt more alive than when I'm on stage and it's not about the audience or getting attention. It's about living truthfully under the given imaginary circumstances and it's part of my venting process; part of my path to self discovery. Your biggest tragedy in life can be your greatest triumph on stage but if you have PTSD it would be a *really* bad idea to train as a method actor because they're expected to use real trauma from their own lives to bring life to the character. In the Meisner system we work from an imaginary circumstance with an element of truth and the beauty of that is that at the end of the day you get to walk away from it. Just because the circumstances are imaginary doesn't mean that the emotional venting is fake. When you're 100% focused on what you're doing your subconscious doesn't know the difference between reality and the imaginary circumstances but it's also important to find a safe space and supportive teachers because there are a LOT of toxic teachers out there that will do more harm than good to their students. I got lucky; found a great teacher at a great school and it has been a life changing experience. Acting literally saved my life but of course it's not for everyone. Each individual has to find their own path to greater self awareness and self discovery.
Self isolation is the most dangerous aspect of PTSD but acting is the exact opposite of isolation.

I think this can work however there are studies of facial expressions that show that emotions are not universal and mind reading is not possible.

Great point about mind reading not being possible. I never know what someone is thinking, but I can tell what they are feeling. Why someone is feeling a certain way is much harder to figure out and needs context and good communication. If anyone is interested in further research about facial expressions: Darwin, Ekman, Masumoto, Friesen are great resources. I'm sorry but if a guy says those things.. it means he sees red flags in you. Where are the funny kind and single men? You denied them. Unwillingness to invest into a relationship, paranoia and wanting to possess over their social media (not everyone has social media, and quite a few intentionally avoid it these days). Meanwhile you will still get into relationships with actual players then blame them for you being played by them.

I have autism and struggle with SHOWING emotion, yet adept to reading them (mostly) and I've had many people say that I look angry when I'm trying to portray sadness, or an understanding facial expression. Choices with RADICAL ACCEPTANCE. We don't have to like it or agree with it but you get freedom from saying, "It is what it is" and do what you can but it's a waste of precious energy to fret or try to keep pushing against something you can't control or change. (This is something I have to do regularly), and sometimes we're not able to Radically Accept yet, and there are Distress Tolerance skills meant for the short-term until you CAN get to that point.
I can relate to SO MUCH of what your second guest is talking about. It's HARD when you've been in that pattern for most of my life. Learning the hard way is pretty much how I've been learning A LOT of things! These podcasts are EXACTLY why I'm here and listening and interacting with what I'm hearing.
Enabling and people pleasing in my opinion are completely tangled together from what I've experienced and still do. It's BETTER -- I still have A LOT of pounding it in my head but I hope this helps SOMEONE who reads any of the chats.

Thank you. I have been and still dealing with the terror of 4 narcissists. I have always been a positive, put-together person and never had any mental issues. This has been going on for 7 months since I became aware, but their planning has been 3 years. To include setting me up with a guy who is narcissistic. This is making me scared, hypervigilent, and alone as they have done things to make me look crazy to point no one believes me as to what they are doing. Gaslight several times, but never again. To the point they've pulled everyone away as now they think I'm crazy and can't see my 1st and only grandbaby. Losing the first year of her life. I'm breaking.

Fantastic interview. I dug deep into psychology going through a divorce. The first time I ever saw the face of duping delight was on my ex. It absolutely shook me. I have read into much of what was discussed here in an effort to teach myself how to detect lies, truth, and genuineness. I don’t think I would be very social at this point if I didn’t develop that in me, a because without doing so I’d be just blindly trusting again.

Great talk, though it did make me a little sad as I am already so clued up on micro expressions due to constant trauma from a very young age right up till my 20's due ... all different kinds of abuse. I learnt these expressions as a way to keep me safe... I can feel and see the emotion as well as knowing what they are thinking. To this day my partner says "how did you know that, I was just thinking that same thing.' And it's for random things that people wouldn't even be right if they guessed. Again, great talk ladies. Much love to you both ❤️

In so many years I have tried to teach myself everything that is out there about body language, narcissism, red flags aso., but then again - the heart wants what it wants, and again I was attracted to someone who I knew right from the start, is not good for me! I really could cut the cords before bigger damage was done, but I felt powerless against the emotional pull. It was a real struggle to not get pulled into this. I saw all the red flags, listened to my intuition, looked carefully if his actions are equal his words, which they were not, and got myself out if the entanglement pretty fast - but emotionally I was hurt anyway - because I just didn t want to believe what my intuition was telling me. A part of me just wanted to be blind and fall for the illusion. So I ended up not only being sad, but also angry with myself for not being able to put on the emotional brakes earlier. I guess it really us a learnkng process to use all those tools.

@@tomasvoldrich Thank you for the thoughtful comments and for your willingness to provide examples. My work has a big focus on pattern recognition so I try to always watch and learn additional pieces of non-verbal communication, as well as sound and tone of voice. I still have a lot to learn from my autistic students, friends and family members. The scowling exists in both anger and thinking/problem solving - but anger will also have a tight mouth. Thank you also for the reminder that eye contact is exhausting for many people.

2nd guest, I have a quote I found about saying yes to things: "Stop saying yes to sh*t you hate."
It's STILL a note-to-self but OMG it's amazing to have in my head at times for sure! (Unknown author of quote). "Easier said than done but not impossible" is another one. That's from Dr Daniel Fox.
This convo sounds like there's a large need for external validation whether or not we get that, and we HAVE to self-validate to break free. AGAIN, I still struggle with that, and "Easier said than done but not impossible" as well as "Stop saying yes to sh*t you hate." Those are in my head CONSTANTLY whether or not I feel I can follow through with. Food for thought. Things to grasp onto.

For men, ask, "Will you sign a prenup?" And women, "Will youi still love me when I am old and fat?" If you don't get a response in 5 seconds, then it's time to move on.
