Go behind the scenes of Joe Dante’s #SmallSoldiers and see how Stan Winston Studio used real puppets and on-set performance to bring to life the militarized Action Figures.
Stan Winston Studio designed and built two categories of characters for the film - Commando Elite soldiers, and alien Gorgonites, all of which were realized as articulated puppets. In total, Small Soldiers would feature fourteen distinct characters: six Commandos, seven Gorgonites, and a ‘Gwendy’ fashion doll. Although Gwendy would require only one type of puppet, the action requirements in the script mandated that each of the remaining thirteen characters be realized, initially, in three configurations: as a self-contained, battery-powered puppet, a rod puppet, and a non-articulated stand-in.

Love it! And only 5 months to get all that work done 😳
Hey i am from germany and loved that movie so much
I love small soldiers all the times since kid!
I really wish neca would just make some replicas of these figures and puppets already
There are action figures on Ebay that are pretty accurate if you are still interested.
@@Nohiro.3D Oh.
@@Nohiro.3D Good point. I payed seven dollars for mine. It did not come with a gun.
There's someone on ig sale a 1/1 replica of these
That will be cool there
This movie is one of the happy memories of my childhood.
At least 3 days ago before my pass expired i did make a video at universal studios.
Still hands down one of the greatest movies of all time..
So much better than CGI
@Hooded Boi Avatar looks like a PS 4 videogame.
Chad Daddy I think he meant in a movie that doesn’t necessarily needs CGI... Avengers movie needs CGI, a giant purple alien fighting with a bunch of superheroes wouldn’t go so well with practical effects..
I love live action world and cgi world!
Nitpicker
Said every fan and critic ever
Such an amazing childhood movie! I'd love to see a stop motion series of them.
What is small soldiers it enemy buddie picture!
I would love a sequel to this movie
Small Soldiers is one of my favorite movies of all time. It doesn't matter how old you are, Small Soldiers was a work of pure passion and creative genius.
One must admit, this film aged well. Thanks to you folks. No cheesy 90s cgi that looked amazing for 5 seconds until everyone realized how awful the animation was.
Are you being sarcastic? The CGI in that movie was distracting as hell.
Hard surface objects are the easiest to render. There's a reason the earliest full CGI movies were Toy Story and a Bug's Life. Insects and toys are more accessible.
@@Trazynn Toy Story was created because the technology they had at the time made all of their models look fake and plastic-like.
The CGI in the Power Rangers Movie was bad.
The CGI is bad lol, but more practical effects could’ve been used in certain scenes.
2:35 now that's just awesome, there it is
It's so organic!
That was my favorite movie...
This film is a testament to classic ways
I remember when I was a kid I wanted these toys kind still do
I watched this movie like 700 times as a kid
Small Soldiers is one my Favorite films.
I think it deserved more success and we need a remake of this classic film.
Sequel
My absolute childhood
Say what you will about stop motion, but puppetry is the heightened form of that.
Not true, both serve a certain function and stylized outcome. I'm just happy to be alive during a time when we have both.
@@MK_2023. the miracle of execution, ain't that the truth.
2:53
"Find the Gorgonites and kill them!"
Archer: "why though"
Comander "be..cause.. your... black!!!!!!!
Just fantastic. I love rod puppets. You guys don't happen to have any unseen footage from the power loader fight in Aliens, do you?
Still want a toy company to make some figs of these guys. I guarantee I would buy Archer and Chip. unfortunately I don't have room for the rest. :'(
I need to buy a second house for my toy collection. XD
Also this is some AWESOME puppetry.
They made toys of them you can find them on eBay being that they are kinda hard to come by they can be pricey
@@TheNICK920 Yeah, I remember those. I still have a smaller Chip figure. What I want is new figures from company's like NECA. It might also be interesting to see what a Japanese company would do, like Bandai or Max Factory.
either way.. I don't think we'll ever get new figures of these characters... I may have to track down the larger versions again. if I have the room someday.
@@MrMomobot yea I feel you I would love a new set of figures maybe even if sideshow or hot toys made them that would be awesome
MrMomobot i actually have some of the original toys of Chip and Archer
Has 'Hot Toys' not made any yet? If they do, I've got a feeling that they will be pretty much screen accurate.
Love this movie! Such an amazing craftsmanship! Astonishing. The scale from cosy toy movie to full action thriller is so good.
Those toys were legitimately cool looking and worth owning
This movie was so dope. 🙌🏼
1:34 the best game of “rock em sock em robots” ever!!!!!
R.I.P. Phil Hartman and Stan Winston!! 2 Of the most creative, game changing , genius and artistic giants, (among many) they are and were in their respective careers and deeply, deeply missed. Thank you both for creating some of my all time favorite characters, and thank you @Stan Winston School for always sharing and reminding us about how absolutely incredible Practical and CG Magic is and can be!
3:02 look at the background
So awesome...
I'll forever be obsessed with this movie.. since the day it came out I've been convinced that eventually we'd get a franchise out of it.. gotta say though.. the Gorgonites are hands down, some of my favorite monster like character designs.. their whole aesthetic sucked me in as a kid
I thought that many of those scenes were CGI ..
A couple were, as I remember stood out as CGI, but the movie has aged well because they didnt rely on it
A lot more than a couple scenes were... Most of the shots where the characters walk/run/jump or even sometimes just standing around were CGI
I think CGI was mostly used to remove wires/rods from these scenes. It definitely shows they used a lot less CGI than I first thought.
@@mrbrown2186 If you watch the movie again, there are plenty plenty shots of CGI. They mainly only used these puppets for hero shots where they were standing still or barely moving
@@bobi_futt thank you, and yes I know that CGI was used a lot in this film, but I was specifically refering to the scenes containing these puppets, as initially I thought they were done with CGI, as I was unaware that they had used any live puppets. And such good puppets at that! But as it was Stan Winston studios I wouldn't expect anything less than amazing!
I loved that movie
coolest toy ever made.
God I’d love one of the major chip hazard figures they had in the film. In the figure box they used in the movie. I’d never take it out!!! Where the Hell could I even find that?!?!Favorite Childhood Movie!!!
I was around 13 when this film came out, gave me nightmares. Well done!
This is incredible! One of my favorite childhood movies! I couldn’t get enough of the toys!
As a kid I always wanted those!
Toy Soldiers!! damn madela effect!!!
I was thinking its was toy soldiers gonna hafta google it now to be sure.
It was always small soldiers, quit with that mendella effect bs,you're memory is just trash
That was one hell of a creativity
Great film and these puppets are really outstanding.🤩
I’ve been waiting forever for this film to come out on Blu-ray
You need a time machine then because I've had it on Blu-ray for at least 5 years! It was in 2014 I got mine. (Just had a look, it says 2014 printed on the rear of the cover/packaging as well)
I still love this movie.
Got it on dvd and i still watch it from to time..
Loved these toys
This might probably one of the best movies ever
Still a favorite.
It's a small world after all
Amazing work, I love the behind the scenes glimpse of the puppetry and even noticed Archer head nodding during the interview.
These effects still look great for a late 90’s movie, even behind the scenes!
Ohhhhh the member berries....
Wow, incredible performance❤
Stan Winston, you were a legend. I hope that I can work in a visual effects company down the line.
Wow, so that's how they did it! Kind of blurs the lines or real and animated doesn't it.
When you question it's real; you did it right!
This Is my childhood right here loved it
"Everything else is just a toy"
Very fun video. This movie ages well because of the amazing puppeteering. CGI graphics lose their flashiness very quickly, whereas true puppetry can't be faked so it always looks good no matter what the puppet looks like. I've seen a marionette made up of about 10 popsickle sticks that looked and moved like the most realistic stick man I've ever seen.
Prime 1 Studios need to make statues of these guys, the whole set for collectors.
I loved the movie (i still have it on VHS).
And is so emotionating to see how much dedication and love was putted in to the creation of the movie 👍😎
That was my favourite movie ❤🎉
FAVORITE movie growing up as a kid
If only someone bring Small soldiers toy back in future year
Great work
I enjoy it every time y'all released new footage of Small Soldiers I am currently sculpting a brick bazooka as screen accurate as I can make him
I hope there will be SMALL SOLDIERS 2
long live SMALL SOLDIERS
Best movie.need round two pls
Absolutely amazing sync.
90's kids we need a chapter two🙏🙏🙏
Denes Kovacs good idea but every time they ruin the series
I use to watch this.movie back to back playing along with my Toys
I remember playing the pc game as a kid. Great memories
I love this movie so much!!!! I wish they continued with the franchise
Just watched it last month, never gets old to me. Phil Hartman was a comedy genius, and died way too young.
Loved Phil RiH!!!
I always thought it was done with a computer. Awesome to see!
Thank you so much for this! I loved this movie as a child & enjoy watching it as an adult. My favorite was & will always be Archer. The Commandos were great but Archer was one of the most unique looking Hero designs I had ever seen. It’s like watching Star Wars & finding out that Chewbacca is lead Actor.... & a Jedi.
..... 🤔.....
Actually, that could be a great film, too.
Esses action figures são muito bonitos.
O filme é ótimo.
Hello and good evening, I just wanted to say thank you for uploading these “Behind the Scenes” videos. This film was one of my favourite films as a kid and it still is now. I was always disappointed the DVD version never had a featurette showcasing the puppets and puppeteers working the controls (like in these videos and i’m sure it wasn’t easy to operate). I have also read your blog on your website about the film and it’s quite fascinating to learn how you brought the characters to life and the hard work that went into making them.
Someone should remake the figures with same articulation as those. I would buy.
I love this movie childhood the best moments
i saw this at the cinema, such a good film!
2019 where you at 30+ year olds 👌
That movie alway will our childhood!
I like small soldiers I watched small soldiers all times it's better than toy story, chucky movies, Ted and more toy movies!
this was awesome ^w^
man I wish we had this in the movie, its CGI that makes films like this and the thing 2011 fall flat.
holy crud this is so cool!!
Cool stuff
Very nice 👍
Fantástico
Now if they can make figures like this now
Dope
plz re launch the toy line with movie quality figures in the movie quality boxes!! i promise theyll sell well!!
Anybody else notice the puppet moving in the background at 3:02 and 3:16? 😂
I watched this movie 11 times in one day
I will take real life (Stan Winston's) puppet effects over modern CGI any day. Effects like this have infinitely more charm and believability than what CGI can do. It doesn't matter if the movement is not as fluid or complex as in CGI, as CGI is inherently more fake and cheap looking anyways.
as a gen z kid that watched this i want the damn action figures built like these take my money i wanna track these puppet figures down
When movies were movies
@Requiem Eye shut up
I went cinema to see this :3
Ya podrían sacar segunda parte
Justo en la infancia :,v
Wow
20years ago..vcd era.
Oh shit I remember this
That is fucking awesome
At the end of the movie did they ever meet up with matt foley that lives in a van by the river ?
