    Long live Rod Puppetry!
    In this Stan Winston Studio #BehindTheScenes footage, you'll see early testing and final rehearsals for a variety of SWS rod puppet characters, including early T-Rex tests for #JurassicPark III, Teddy tests for AI: Artificial Intelligence, and fight choreography rehearsal from Small Soldiers.
    With advances in CGI, it's never been easier to remove rods and puppeteers, and we look forward to seeing rod puppetry used for many years to come.

    I wish the tyrannosaurus returned at the end of Jurassic Park III with a puppet like this. It’s great to hear Stan Winston’s voice again in this video. By the way, Klayton Fioriti sent me.

    That T-Rex Rod Puppet looks so real compared to CGI. All it needs is some "weight" in the form of the body jiggling and shifting with each step. If I make a movie with dinosaurs I'm definitely finding a way to make that work.

      @RogueT-Rex8468 Před 5 lety +3

      JollyGoodFellow I would support that

      @alancastaneda8322 Před 5 lety +9

      I was thinking the same, it needs the belly to be made of a very soft silicone. Maybe, a liquid filled silicone "balloon" of sorts to simulate the weight of the organs sloshing about. The other thing needed is to see the leg muscle strain and flex, especially the tendons.

    • @skycloud4802
      @skycloud4802 Před 4 lety

      Yes I agree. Just needs to have a weighty feel to it, and some ripple effect to the muscle. Otherwise it's perfect.

    That Rex puppet looks amazing. Smooth realistic movement and you can't even tell the scale difference. Thats extremely well done and its too bad its not in the final movie.

    The T-Rex Rod Puppet Tests look absolutely incredible, well done! I hope you were able to use that technique in Jurassic World :)

    That rex walking woulda blown me the hell away. Thats a concept that should still be used. CGI is good and all but never ever the same compared to something actually being there.

  • @Aartwood

    This is the way we should be going, back to puppets and down with cgi! Whoohoo ;)

    • @Daftotron
      @Daftotron Před 9 lety +13

      Aartwood Please don't say that CGI as a whole is a bad thing. People said the same thing during the late ninties about practical effects. Just encourage and appreciate _both_ art forms.

    • @Aartwood
      @Aartwood Před 9 lety +7

      Oh no I do appreciate both but when used sparingly. Take the walking dead, practical make up, sets and weapons, cgi gun holes, explosions and splatter.
      Now take I am legend, cgi everything.....when it didn't need to be, and the same with world war z, cgi zombies when it could have been practical, it creates a disconnect from reality which makes the film feel not real.
      The best cgi for me is when I have to thing to myself "is that real or fake" , then I'm very very impressed :D

    • @TBStudios91
      @TBStudios91 Před 6 lety +2

      Puppet and animatronics, blended with, say, good CGI backgrounds or tweaks and corrections would be the best. Jurassic World was very fake looking IMHO

    • @passionoflovers
      @passionoflovers Před 6 lety +1

      And yet, all the animatronics in Jurassic World 2, looks like giant rubber puppets. I don't think that kind of practical effects translates well to the modern crisp video quality we're so used to these days. Things looks fake pretty quickly!

    The JP3 tests look great and I do wish they used that in the end! Makes my wonder why they wanted to use rod puppetry after using the CG/animatronics combo on the previous two. Was it a budgetary reason?

    T-Rex WHAT puppet? Man, I remember they had a giant robot for the first movie. I'm impressed how well this works, though, as well as the other puppets. Nowadays, you can even remove rods and puppeteers with software like Mocha Pro.

    • @eagc7
      @eagc7 Před 9 lety +1

      A lot of modern movies use more practical effects than most people would know, especially those many people call "CGI fests". Check out Legacy Effects channel! You'd be surprised.
