  • Met Police officers will not attend welfare checks or patients who have missed hospital appointments from 1 November.
Thousands of police hours will be reclaimed allowing officers to spend more time policing London's streets, but officers insist they will still attend incidents with a threat of harm or to life.

It wasn't the Police's responsibility in the first place . Mental Health services used to have stand by staff and on call services to deal with these situation. Think about how many staff they could employ for this purpose alone if they stopped hiring diversity managers etc .

There are people with depression and suicidal thoughts who don’t seek help because it’s Police who are sent to their doors.
When a persons distressed, having short tempered, impatient, armed Police surrounding a person, giving orders, refusing to listen… and creating fear actually forces people suffering into hiding and silence.

Such an ignorant comment, most police officers are very caring and respectful, however they simply don’t have the training, knowledge or powers to properly support them.

I remember I overdosed. The ambulance was gonna come in 4 hours. I had no choice but to call police they saved my life. Got to me in 5 minutes. And took me straight to hospital. That was last year. But I'm in a better place now I would've been dead if police never arrived

Except that there are peopke who need help, and there are people who have been so coddled they have no clue how to care for themselves.
There are a lot of people struggling, I agree, but there are many who are flailing about with the attitude of a toddler, young and old.
There's only so much help available. Somebody who refuses to go appointments for anxiety reasons will need adjustments, but that needs time and resources to cement.
A person standing on a bridge is more priority for emergency services, who have enough wasted calls.

That implies theres a threat to life then doesnt it? The only power police have to enter if theres a threat to life is section 17 of PACE. So unless theres that, the ambulance will just have to leave wont they or talk their way in. Its not the Job of the police to respond to an MH call about a person having an Episode where they dont know who anyone is do they.
