I went to an America's Got Talent taping once. Before ANY of the acts audition in front of the audience, the production comes out and tells the audience: standing ovation on 1, 2, 3. now, everybody look up and look surprised/scared. Now, act bored. Then they pick some audience members for the close-up shots of people yawning, laughing, etc. (without anybody on stage.) They do the same with judge dramatic reactions. THEN, the auditions begin and you find out why you were looking up scared/surprised... there's an act with a guy doing aerial stuff. I left after the second audition.

In fact, before the show even started, they pre recorded all of us making various fake reactions to things. They would say "ok now look surprised" "Okay, now clap". at the start of the video they made the statement that Woodland players like me work very hard to hide their breath and hold it and that is very true. We do work very hard once my music teacher made us do a lesson about controlled breathing basically where we didn’t put all our air through the instrument and didn’t slouch instead hold air in your stomach. and we had to hold our breath for 50 measures as practice and it was hard. I play clarinet and I feel like I learned well many people learned that if you just keep trying, you can do it when we were doing the 50 measures. Many people instead of blowing all the air during the first five measures we played soft, barely put any air. but enough, so the first guy with the flute took so many breaths, especially for a teacher that’s what they want kids to stop doing when they first start so
