Gen4 Toyota Prius 12-Volt battery change for new one

  • Generation 4 (currently 2016 through 2022 model years) starting/starter battery replacement. My car would not start, it is under three years old and the original battery died in the summer heat yesterday. Luckily I had a "Jump Starter" that I had bought recently (and charged up at home) with me - that's called *being prepared*, and it saved my ass.

    Thanks ! What a relief. I was afraid I would have to tow the car to a dealer for a computer reset. I am storing my son's car, and I don't drive it enough, so the original battery went completely dead
    and now won't take a charge. Whew !

    Thank u for very simple n straight-to-the-point presentation on this battery replacement. This helped me a lot cause I had thought that a battery replacement for a hybrid would b more technical. I noticed u didn't even need to wear rubber gloves for this procedure. Thanks again!

    I gotta give you big time kudos for this video. like the prior comment it's been centuries since I had to change a battery and obviously cars are way more complicated, even something as simple as this battery replacement did require a different approach then back in the day. Thanks bud for sharing, take care 🙂

    Thank for telling us the battery you used to replace the toyota battery and where you got it. My dealership, miracle toyota wants to charge me $300 to change the battery. They also wanted to charge me $914 for 3 tires and a 4th for free. I went to Discount Tire and got 4 tires for $581. They are awesoe tires and so much quieter

      @Spearfisher1970  Před 5 dny

      O'Reilly Auto Parts is where I got the battery. What brand and model of tire did they get you? Keep in mind that new tires (of the same type, not touring vs. mudding tires) are just about always quieter - you really can't start to judge the road noise until about 15k to 20k miles, and then-after.

    The video is is a bit basic for me, but it was helpful to know socket sizes in advance. This really sped up the installation process. It took me less then 10 minutes and that's with cleaning out the battery tray of loose dirt. Thanks. 2020 Prius here.

    To help with the hood latch, oil it and unscrew the rubber bumpers at the front hood corners 1/2 turn. This will put a little tension on the latch. Don’t raise them so much that the hood doesn’t sit flush. Looks like yours is a little high already. Perhaps you hit a curb and tweaked the latch strut. It’s diabolically connected directly to front lower radiator support, and transmits any deformation there to the hood.

    Really enjoyed the video. I was just wondering what is the best brand to buy for the car battery and I'm assuming you can get it at a retail car parts store.
    Please let me know when you get a chance.

    does not look the 12v battery pack which is in the back of the 2017, not hood front. but maybe a mechanic-like understanding might still work to change the 2017 prius v battery.

    How many miles did/ do u have? I, too, have a 2019. I'm surprised u needed one, may have sat on car lot for a while. During pandemic, our cars sat home more, especially during winter here in rust belt. That, too, what part of country do u reside? I'm an old battery man, I slow chgd MY battery 1st thing in the Spring this yr.
    One more, I slow chg all my new batteries to get them off to a good start before installing. And chek the DATES on ur new battery to get the freshest u CAN. U got a sub'd & a 👍!

      in the video it says 44765 on his odometer.
      I had my 2019 battery go low on me & did some research & it is possible a 12V battery may need replacing in the 4-5 year timeframe.
      that said, the dealer said the battery checks out fine & didn't need to be replaced so just gonna keep rolling with it & keep a jumpstarter under the seat.

    Does the computer or anything in the Prius need to be “reset” after installing a new 12 volt battery? I heard if you don’t reset the computer the car would read that it’s still an old battery connected and won’t start the engine. Ever heard of such a thing?

    • @Spearfisher1970
      @Spearfisher1970  Před 9 měsíci

      I have heard of this issue with other machines or devices (not even sure they were vehicles), but not on Priuses for a battery that recently died. In the case of this video, and most cases of weak batteries - as well as the stranded motorist whose truck I jump started (not with my Prius) two evenings ago - the batteries still had enough charge to turn lights on, etc., but could not turn over the engines. That may all change if you put a Prius into a secluded storage for a year or more and completely drained/killed the 12V battery, but that would be an uncommon occurrence.

    When I called Toyota to change the battery they are charging 175$ just to install a new battery and saying it costs that much because they need to reset the codes on a hybrid car. Is it true or they just making things up to charge?

    • @riceburner4747
      @riceburner4747 Před 4 měsíci

      Not sure if anyone answered u, but I went to Toyota parts dept, & installed mine in the parking lot. I gave them my old one for a core charge. All the computer does is go by age of battery & let u know when something is wrong. Being I worked for a battery company years ago, there is no issue with me bc I'm constantly checking mine.
