  • Zohd has a special place in my heart for the excellent and very easy-to-put-together Dart wing. So how will the Zohd Drift, a plane designed to be beginner friendly, stack up? Let's fly one and find out!

    Ah, yes. We've seen this before, it's more common than you would think. Most men our age don't talk about it often enough...
    You're a flight controller addict.
    And from what I can see, it's bad.
    It's ok, we're here for you. Look, see that guy? He forgot how to fly without gyros and self leveling, too. And look at Tracy; without a voltage display in her OSD, she'd fly until the FPV video goes dark, and then the dreaded... _Telemetry Lost_
    It's okay, everyone, settle down, I was just telling a story!
    (These brownies are delicious)

    Check the CG, the factory CG marks are way off. Use the servo wires as CG marks. It makes a huge difference, mine glides smoothly.

    @cagmuer Před rokem +1

    Some things that might help, its more of a glider so at high throttle the wing is deflecting a bit and contributing to the porpoising. Also, that radio does that trims, its those two nubs on both sides of the power button.

    • @CurryKitten
      @CurryKitten  Před rokem

      Yes - it does do trims, but I couldn't remember how to do it at the time (nor can I now) Rather than try and figure that out, I went with another idea.

  • @AerialWaviator
    @AerialWaviator Před rokem

    Nice honest review. It was like your your evil dark twin packed your field gear. LOL. (trims and DVR issues). I think we've all had similar issues with gear at the field. Was impressed with your ability to fly and trim given the wind factor. Good spur of moment ingenuity.
    For 5V camera, an option is to power off the battery balance lead. I think powering from Rx as you did is just fine, as camera shouldn't consume much more than a servo (and there was no rudder servo)
    FYI: I've seen a couple pilots put a micro servo between the wing and the canopy to hold a pan camera. This provides some nice perspectives. Being able to look back along the leading edge of the wing, or just a hint of nose/canopy looking forward.

    • @CurryKitten
      @CurryKitten  Před rokem +1

      Good call, i don't know why I didn't consider the balance lead. I mean, it said it needed 5v, but it might have been worth trying it off one cell.... although ultimately another BEC would have been better. I usually work on a 1A per servo when it comes to thinking about how much the BEC can support... although this is normally overkill... but as you said, all seemed fine. Yes, in this type of plane it does feel a bit odd to have the camera right in the nose... that's reserved for wings. Usually my camera on the more traditional fixed wing goes on the canopy with a bit of the nose visible, and I do love to pan to the wings as well. Perhaps in a future video :)

  • @PiDsPagePrototypes
    @PiDsPagePrototypes Před 6 měsíci

    Yes, the JST is for the Zohd camera. There's also the option of powering it off one or two 18650's, supposed to give more resilience to weather conditions, they also do an official 18650 based pack, should fly multiple sessions on that. I bought the white version with the flight controller and camera,... then had to wait a couple of months for XT30's to be in stock locally.

    • @CurryKitten
      @CurryKitten  Před 6 měsíci

      Yeah - I saw those. It's nice if you want to upgrade it with Zohd parts, just a bit more tricky if you don't. Have you flown it in trickier weather? That must be a wild ride :D

      @@CurryKitten First flight this Sunday I hope, work gets in the way of flying :D
      I have a pile of 2S 18650 packs from toy CoAxial Heli's, so if I get to play, it'll be well provisioned. Expecting the Drift to be a good starter in to fixed wing after Cine Drones and slow progession in Heli's. New TX16S, secondhand FatSharks, and buddy box cable to my brothers TX.

    Don't the little joypads act as trims on that TX?

    • @CurryKitten
      @CurryKitten  Před rokem +1

      There's maybe a way of using these as trims, but in a regular mode they do things like go into the telemetry screen and back and forth between the different stick displays. I just plumped for the easiest thing I could think of doing at the time.

    This is a great video. Would you recomend as a first plane to someone who flies mini quads?
    Probably easier than a wing?
    Take care.

    • @CurryKitten
      @CurryKitten  Před 4 měsíci

      Yeah - this traditional plane shape is always much more stable than a wing - and much easier to launch. If you've done a lot of flying on quads, it's possible you could outgrow this pretty quuicky (although it depends on what you want to do in fixed wing) but it is a very good beginner friendly plane.

  • @karlc9773

    Instead of altering offset, couldnt you do a physical trim with the push rod, I tried flying mine but i used a very small 450 mah 2s and the CG was well out, you used an 850mah could I use a 3s 1000mah, which I have in my collection ?

    • @CurryKitten
      @CurryKitten  Před měsícem

      Yes, you could change the push rod position - but I always feel that's more of a faff than messing with the radio. I'll fly it with a radio with actual trim tabs next time.. I think that'll be easier. I don't have any 1000mAh 3S lipos, but if it's not too thick, I'm pretty sure you can slide it in there - probably a little further back to get the CG right

    What did you think of the CG? Most folks seem to agree it's a bit forward of what ZOHD suggests, but I'm interested in your thoughts.

    • @CurryKitten
      @CurryKitten  Před rokem

      I had the lipo stuffed quite a way back and it was coming up just a bit nose heavy according to where the little nubs are so you can balance it and that flew (eventually) pretty well. If the CG was more forward, I would have expected to to have gone tail heavy and been pretty terrible - but I didn't see that

    • @PiDsPagePrototypes
      @PiDsPagePrototypes Před 6 měsíci

      That CG suggestion would probably be a close match using the Zohd offcial 18650 pack for the Drift.

      @@emperorkalel When you say you have the FPV version, do you mean you bought the ZOHD VC400 as well (or something else?) I presume you have some FPV goggles, or a screen with a 5,8 video receiver? There's only one point to check out if you have the VC400 and that is the camera may be in pit mode - in which case the output is at a very low power and you might not see anything unless you are very close. If you check the manual it tells you the led to check for that and how to change the power output to something higher

    • @CurryKitten

      It would have been pretty slow if it wasn't for that wind :) Yes, you could have physically altered the servo position by adjusting the clevis or the holes you put the pushrods into, but in each end, only 1 hole was made large enough (although you could obviously make the others larger as well)
