You aren't alone. No one has ever bothered me about not wearing tampons either. It's not a big deal. I don't think anyone noticed that I wear pads... Even when I was a teenager. I tried a tampon once because I was on the swim team, but it was so uncomfortable that I would just not go to swimming practice the week of my period. My mum was totally cool with that.
The only time anyone ever said anything to me was when I started my period and I was wearing white shorts. That was embarrassing.

Any who, I finally 'took the leap' when I got my own car and cash and figured out what worked best for me. Now i have a daugther, shes young but Ive already 'walked her down the aisle". There's also some stuff that isn't usually in that aisle, like cloth pads. They need rinsed out in the sink and then run through a washing machine, but they absorb so much more and are way more comfortable!! It doesn't feel like wearing a partial diaper the way paper pads do.
I don't think all stores carry menstrual cups/rings, either. They also need rinsed out in the sink, but because of that they're reusable for years instead of creating tampon waste. Definitely not recommended for beginners, though.

I’m surprised this is still an issue with today’s parents. I know that even back in the 80s, tampons were for “experienced” women and the “bad” girls because there was a fallacy about tampons and virginity.
Feminine hygiene has evolved beyond pads and tampons. There are menstrual cups, menstrual sponges as well as interlabial pads and period panties that aren’t as “obvious” as traditional pads.

I get so tired of this narrative of moms who try to protect their children are overly controlling. Maybe in 20 years when everyone is sterile we won't look like giant controlling asses. I tell my children these things, talk about alternatives and explain that tampons make cramps worse. They can make their own decisions from there since they're all mostly adults now.

Nobody intelligent will ever make fun of a girl having a period! If they say anything at all, just know that they're immature and uninformed and in that way you're better off than they are. There's nothing weird or taboo about something healthy and natural for a woman's body. Even if kids act stupid about it, no adult will say anything to you negative. At my job people bring in extra boxes of pads and tampons just in case to support their other women coworkers and it's super supportive and amazing. There's a sisterhood in our shared experiences! A healthy body is better than a Barbie body. Never be ashamed of something every woman ever has to experience 💜 and always ask trusted adults questions if you're concerned! I used to be so anxious and frightened about it, I hid it from my parents for years and used toilet paper because I thought what was happening was wrong and "dirty". I wish I had advice then that there's no shame in it. Parents didn't know and I didnt have proper supplies for three years 😳😳. Don't be like me!! I was overreacting about it trust me, then I finally admitted to parents and female friends and everyone was supportive and shared their own experiences and I felt safe and understood 💜💜

A great teacher to go risk TSS in a child? Even adult women still lose limbs and their life from it. It’s also inappropriate to go behind a parents back to help a young child (around 9 to 11 years old) acquire something to try to insert into themselves 😳 Those things don’t just slide in magically

"tampons hold about half the volume of menstrual fluid compared with cups, and therefore need to be changed more frequently.
Menstrual cups are made from medical-grade silicone, latex rubber or elastomer, and can hold 10-38ml of fluid.
Depending on the heaviness of menstrual flow and the cup itself, menstrual cups need to be emptied every 4-12 hours.
One cup can be used for up to ten years"

Apart from publicly humiliating me in the shops once, my dad came home from work with a huge shopping bag full of loose (wrapped) tampons of every size imaginable. He was the only one at work with a daughter old enough to need them. They’d been making a metal detector for some company or other and they’d had test control ones and safe ones. Once the machine was up to spec they didn’t need all the clean (no metal in them), still wrapped and perfectly fine to use tampons. I got them. They lasted me for something like 5 years. At the time I was cringing but not any more. It was an awesome perk to get them.

I was not allowed tampons as a younger menstruating woman……I started mine at 9 but by12 really wanted something far less bulky and was told no repeatedly. I still remember the smell, bulk, leakage and embarrassment of having to lug massive pads in my school bag now.
When I got my paper round at 14 I chose my own products and was much happier. I wish I had access to a menstruation cup back then as they were essential with a thin pad after I had children.
Personal choice and unbiased shopping is really essential.

My mother, born in 1956, was told that virgins can't use tampons by her mother, who went to nursing school! My grandmother was born in 1917, so I have no idea if the error was caused by prudish-ness or incorrect, out-of-date medical info! My mother never did use tampons, but eventually, I did because a girlfriend taught me about them. It definitely took practice, plus my flow was fairly mild/moderate, so I didn't think they made tampons light enough for my flow. Now, my BC implant eliminates my period, but eventually, I'm gonna go off it (cause I or the husband will be getting permanent sterilization). I'm definitely looking into menstrual cups and cloth pads. All cotton, organic applicator free tampons plus pads are what I used before going on BC. Disposable pads chafe, so I'm glad I've already discovered cloth resuable pads. Plastic applicators felt better than cardboard, but I hated that it was plastic and therefore gonna last for millennia in the landfill. That's why I finally figured out applicator free tampon usage.

My mom never taught me anything about pads or periods. We had one afternoon at school where it was discussed with female students only (it was sponsored by a prominent period product brand in Germany) and a couple months after when my periods started, I just started using the pads my mom bought for herself (which were hidden away quite well. I was using tons of toilet paper until I found them)
I had no cramps at all the first year I got my periods (by now excruciating pain bc I developed endometriosis which my mother also didn’t know was a thing), but I was also constantly soiling my bed and pj’s with blood because of that, and because I didn’t know anything about pads or how long they last or any other tricks to prevent spillage. I still sometimes wake up in the middle of the night, panicked because I felt a twinge in my lower stomach and might’ve bloodied my bed. Those years I felt extremely lonely with my period problems to the point I was too scared to open pads in public bathrooms when someone else was there too because they might hear.
Edit: thanks to all that I’m a master at removing bloodstains because I was too embarrassed to throw bloody laundry into the laundry basket. I just cleaned it in the middle of the night.

My sentiments exactly! Outsiders do not live in my house nor do they know the circumstances of my family or the beliefs of my family. It would be one thing to recommend a product that the daughter could then look into with her mom or maybe even the lady could have a respectful conversation with the mom about not wanting tampons (maybe some myths that have caused the hesitation), but ultimately it should be the decision of the parent. Going against a parent's will behind their back is despicable behavior.
I realize there are parents that are abusive and those are extenuating circumstances, but it shouldn't be assumed in every case that parents are abusive as society likes to do these days. If abuse seems possible in a given situation, dig deeper and make a real effort to find more evidence.
