This is precious! Anna had a beautiful game. She reminds me a bit of Amanda Anisimova - the posture, silence, effortless ball striking...
Anna's tennis skills were underated. If she had a decent and reliable serve she would have won at least a few tournaments. Injuries and supreme focus were factors also. I enjoyed this match though.
Both players were struggling physically. This match was an unforced error galore. You can tell how Venus significantly improved her technique and game from the late 90s to early 2000s. She was already a force to be reckoned with but when i watch these matches, her game is so flawed that is really impressive how competitive she was.
After winning Wimbledon in 2000, Venus improved her game a lot by putting a lot more leg into her groundstrokes. She was muscling her serve and forehand before most of the time.
Can you all post 1998 Miami Kournikova def. Seles?? People have been dying to see that for YEARS.

Anna’s shot selection, execution, change of direction, change of pace and spin is an absolutely a joy to watch in the first set, Maybe the best tennis she ever played. Shame she totally lost it in the 3rd.

Its good to FINALLY see a crowd and announcers that were actually fair to one of the Williams sisters. There weren't too many of those in their careers, especially early on.

look at Venus' game..... there was power no doubt.... but a clumsy forehand , such technical problems in her game all through her life on that forehand and the service motion ..
it was a play up to always fall short when the pressure piled on .
there couldn't be anything she could've done against Serena at their best.
serenas serve was a rock during pressure ...... Venus' was a liability.
serenas forehand became a rock a few years on because her technique, posture, bending to take the balls etc... got solid... Venus' until today isnt solid....
venus' overheads are not great, better than many women because of her power and height but not great,
serenas is super solid , the technique you name it,
you really should watch their tennis matches again and understand why Venus could never have a chance.
serenas precision , and serenas return of serve was another wondrous thing .
Venus would intimidate by going inside the serve line, but her returns were never that explosive ...

Many Players knew her weakness and despite that she still managed to win some majors especially Wimbledon and the US Open.
V.Williams had height and she had a great First serve and a hard second serve as well.
Good all Court Game and a capacity to deal with all manner of Opponents.

yes, 2000 and 2001 she managed four slams , just not in Australia and French ... which means, its not varied enough.
venus can always come back and beat anyone on a good day but her good day is not consistent enough and that goes down to her not so good technique. once she is under pressure the serve starts failing, and the opponent starts putting her on the run.
Venus is no Serena , she isn't able to make winners on the run like Serena does. Venus tends to simply put the ball back in court and run and run until the opponent makes an error. post 2004 or 5 , even that stopped as Venus could no longer run the way she used to.
you just got to hand the award to Serena. Venus can be remembered below the likes of Serena, graf Seles, Navratilova, arguably Hingis, evert . she isn't in their consistent league. hingis and Venus yes , somewhere comparable.

Agreed. Anna merely lacked the drive or hunger that pushes other players over the top. Probably because she had money and fame in many places and not just on the tennis court. She was a decent all-around player but she never wanted to push that extra mile.
@debbied.1682 Anna was an excellent player but unfortunately had back issues. She had the drive and determination to win but was in the era with some great players. Anna was an excellent double players Partnering with Martina Hingis. She was a very humble and beautiful young lady. She got along well with all of her competitors.

Anna's little bathroom break to try to break Vee's rhythm was shameful gamesmanship, the fact that the ump let her do that in the middle of a set was also shameful. Glad Vee won she was clearly the better player - Anna only won the 1st set bc of Vee's errors then Vee stepped it up and forced Anna into errors
When you get millions of dollars thrown at you just for being beautiful it is hard to focus on tennis anymore.

Sad Kournikova had to retire at 21 due to injuries. She was wildly talented with a beautiful all-court game and could have done so much more.
@JR 1986 Nope - she had a chronic back injury that had nothing to do with her fitness regime. Actually, by all accounts, Kournikova was a work horse and took tennis incredibly seriously, practicing for hours and being very tough on herself. Seems like you get your information from tabloids.
@JR 1986 She had persistent, diagnosed chronic spinal issues since a young age and was continually injured throughout her very young career with freak injuries (falling on her thumb while beating Graf). She achieved a good amount considering how young she was and how little play she was granted. There's a lot of revisionist history in your post - her training was considered supreme, but lost a lot of weight in her last six months on tour due to an inability to train at her usual level.
@JR 1986 You're being way too harsh. Some women can't bulk up no matter how hard they train...Kournikova might be one of those. The likes of Serena Williams and Sam Stosur are physical 'freaks' and outliers. It's a bit like expecting every man to look like Arnold Schwarzenegger after some weight training.

Oh I didn't know back in time, they sat down after the 1st game. They didn't sit down after the set was done on even games. 1998, 22 years ago now we got the serves clock, you can challenge a call. They needed this back then.
Back to the match. Look like Venus hit over 90% of her balls to Anna, and Anna had Venus on the run most of the match.That Florida heat took a beat down on Anna, but when Venus put that fist up in the air, you knew it was over, only the strong would win.

I just noticed that many of the comments are praising Anna. That was very strange. Venus humiliated Anna in the third set. In sports one should judge players by their talents, not by their looks. What a shame! I guess some of the people watching tennis, do so to look at the girls. That is sickening!!!!

I think Ana was hoping Venus would give up after the first set loss so she could coast to the title. Ana simply was not a competitor.
Keegan Thorpe yeah, kournikova never gained that mental toughness, which really sucks, because she was a brilliant player. Had she wanted to work for it, worked on her serve, she really could have been something. She had all the shots and she wouldn’t have been pushed off the court like Hingis was when the game got stronger. What a shame.

Anna should have listened to Bollettieri, he desperately wanted to develop her serve before going to play the tour full-time, but after the semifinal appearance at Wimbledon at 16 went to her mom’s Alla’s head. Alla took over the coaching and just abandoned the academy in Bradenton even though Nick wanted to work with Anna a little longer before being a full time player.

Although this tournament was Kournikova's major breakthrough, this was still one of the worse finals with Venus with some mild injury while Kournikova deflating with errors. I will look forward to the 2001 final, but WTA may be playing too safe to upload that match for how wild the ambiance was in the 2001 crowds.
Qiu ZH as for that 2001 final, that crowd was absolutely disgusting towards Venus. Who at the time was the reigning Wimbledon and US Open champion. Playing in her own country.The horrible Indian Wells incident with the sisters happened the same year.

One of the worst finals I have ever seen. The quality was atrocious and they both played terribly. Sooooo many unforced errors.

Venus is undoubtedly an amazing talent but Kournikova is goals. She was clearly #2 but hot. I am a straight girl but always thought way more interesting watching her than unattractive players. Anna was all around goals (talent AND looks).
