I owned the floppy disk version, and played it on a 386SX - the 33 MHz AMD chip. Bought the GOG games 6 years ago (it is now 2024), but never realised I could push the graphics past 640x480. WOW! Thank you for the very helpful tutorial. The game is playable now.
@@missingcat9293 it has its moments, but they are all too fleeting and infrequent... and on the whole the game is so, *so* short. Get it during a sale. that's my only suggestion ;)
Recently bought my joystick/throttle to play these games as well ; ) I'd suggest looking up "X-Wing Alliance Upgrade Project", for help in doing these things (and SO much more) to XWA as well. Cheers!
I'm currently playing the GOG version of the X-Wing Collector's CD-ROM on Linux. Despite the primitive graphics (320x200, no shaders!) and the minimal joystick support (only 2 axes and 2 buttons), this is my preferred version. The Windows version does not have the dynamic soundtrack that I like very much. And the improved graphics are far from my liking as well. The important is that the game runs very smoothly, does not crash and the controls and the hit/collision tests are very consistent and precise. Having lots of fun!
you are absolutely correct on all counts except one: Joysticks with 4 buttons and a hat are also supported. I played all of the X-Wing and TIE Fighter DOS versions with a CH Flightstick PRO. other than that; yeah, you're spot on.
@@Calmputer I remember that those old joysticks for DOS (D-SUB 15 connector, aka Game Port) used to emulate the Hat as combinations of the 4 basic buttons. I checked my setup (DOSBox on Linux) and could configure the buttons 3 & 4, but the hat didn't work at all. My current stick is a Logitech Extreme 3D Pro. Cheers!
@@Calmputer I managed to configure the Hat within DosBox setup, and now I can look back, left, right, and forward again. Another great thing about DosBox is the General MIDI support, so I'm using the Linux's Synth instead of the built-in Sound Blaster emulation, the music sounds really great!!!
Just wanted to say thank you for the links and explanations. I knew about the 60fps patch and hardware one. But, I wasnt aware of that music patch for Tie Fighter in particular. When I first started that game "special" edition... let's just say the score felt VERY out of place. While, the OG release benefit from dynamic music, this one looks better and with this music patch it makes for a decent compromise.
I agree, the CD music tracks don't really fit with the games... Someone did work briefly on a music patch for the original X-Wing as well, but it was abandoned before being finished. :(
Pretty sure the speeds of the ships are in meters per second. From Wookiepedia: While listed with a maximum atmospheric speed of 1,050 kph, the X-wing could otherwise fly at supersonic speeds. Indeed, with the engines at maximum thrust an X-wing could travel so fast it would glow hot from atmospheric friction. That would be 291 meters per second, which is far closer to the measurement used in the game
you know that makes a lot more sense... especially considering the distances are measured in kilometers (km)... and it never takes 0.1 seconds to get *anywhere* in the game.
Thank you very much for the guide, helped me setting up the SE versions of those games easily and much faster. One thing I encountered with those fixes that keeps bugging me a little bit (although it's far from being a gamebreaking issue) for X-Wing 1998 SE is the mouse pointer dragging / moving quite a bit jerky in the menu and starship sections. I see it's the very same issue here in your video. Before applying the fixes, (the ddraw patch or the 60fps patch, I don't know) the mouse works normal and fast, but after that it is turned into a generic Windows mouse pointer and moves weirdly, as seen here in this video. Is there any fix or workaround for that?
I wonder which version of X-Wing Special Edition and TIE Fighter Special Edition (GOG or steam) is being put on the physical DVD-ROM disc releases that Limited Run Games just sold on their website.
You say this guide improves Tie Fighter special edition, which GOG installed for me in the folder called 'Star Wars - TIE Fighter CD (1995)'. But then you paste the mods in the folder 'Star Wars - TIE Fighter (1998)'. Can you please clarify which one I should install and upgrade? Thanks.
when you buy TIE Fighter on GOG you get three versions, and these are their folders: the original floppy-disk: "Star Wars - TIE Fighter (1994)" the Collector's CD: "Star Wars - TIE Fighter CD (1995)" the Special Edition: "Star Wars - TIE Fighter (1998)" the first two run in DOSbox, while the third is a windows program. you need to install the 1998 version, and copy the files into that version's folder.
I wanna install these mods cuz you said it makes them look good but then only flew like 30 secs worth of a training mission which didn't really show anything I wanna see what an actual mission looks like with these mods installed any videos or pages that u could suggest where I could see something like that I have the xwau and the tie fighter total conversion mods downloaded but can't find any mods or videos of molded xwing game and no one that I ask can give me an accurate answer all I wanna do is play original xwing not with super updated graphics just not like 1990's graphics
You are absolutely right. this was one of my first tutorial videos and I didn't really have the formula down. I'm sorry. That said! I did a let's play of TIE Fighter a while back... and Battles 2-13 were played with these mods installed. Here's the link to the first special edition video: czcams.com/video/-ewit_HcLgs/video.html Though maybe battle 6-7 might be more interesting...
This is my fault, entirely. I forgot to mention that you need to extract ddraw.cfg, ddraw.dll and nopowervr.txt to *both* game directories: \STAR WARS X-Wing vs TIE Fighter \STAR WARS X-Wing vs TIE Fighter\BalanceofPower BoP is less of an expansion and more like an entirely different game, with its own executable.
A shame about doing all of those music fixes then having to turn the soundtrack off. I quite liked the midi track of the older versions of X Wing and Tie fighter. How do the fixed versions compare? Great video btw. I'll consider myself subscribed, sir.
hey, thank you, kind sir! Agreed, I could have left the music on, but Disney would have claimed the entire video. The music is CD-quality, so it's sufficient. You can get Midi music for TIE Fighter with the TIE Reconstructed mod (link in description) and it works wonders! It's not quite as dynamic as the Collector's CD version, but it sound nostalgic and actually better than the CD music. Sadly the plans for an X-Wing version of that mod were scrapped quite a while ago :(
I know you made this as a guide to the GOG version, but I'm trying to use the 60fps fix on the steam version of X-Wing and I can't seem to get it working. It claims to work on the steam version but I can't find a lot of information on it.
I just installed the Steam version of X-Wing and then added the 60fps fix. worked just fine.. however, I should note that it only makes the *flying* portion of the game 60fps. the briefings and other stuff on the independence will still be rendered in low FPS. I should mention that I confirmed this with the Steam Overlay's own FPS counter...
@@Calmputer Strange, it’s definitely not working for me. I’ve triple checked I’ve installed it properly but I hop into the maze to test and there’s no change
Alright I figured it out! The problem is that I was using a gsync monitor, and I’m guessing that somehow the monitor thought it should only be at 24hz even though the game is running at 60 FPS. The solution I found was to set the monitor from gsync to fixed refresh rate when running the game. Works like a charm now.
