Watch a stick of incense burn up close, see the heat move in real time and the microscopic bubbles that would otherwise be hard to see. The visuals can be stunning when you see them in clear vibrant detail. Use headphones to better appreciate the sound! This is the first of a new series of ASMR videos we are planning on putting together.
This video is designed to elicit an autonomous sensory meridian response, otherwise known as ASMR. The sound design is creatively interpreted and makes use of some real recording of what it actually sounds like.

What is ASMR? Taken from Wikipedia:
"Autonomous sensory meridian response (ASMR) is a neologism for a perceptual phenomenon characterized as a distinct, pleasurable tingling sensation in the head, scalp, back, or peripheral regions of the body in response to visual, auditory, tactile, olfactory, or cognitive stimuli. The nature and classification of the ASMR phenomenon is controversial, with much anecdotal evidence of the phenomenon but little or no scientific explanation or verified data."

Amazing. I mean, I've seen this on Macro Tube. But the sound really adds a dimension. I see you've listed the sound as "creatively interpreted" and I've read in the comments where you explained what you did, and I like that. I think that explanation should be in the description though. Just subbed. Great stuff.

+Diamonddavej probably 1:1 macro would be enough, it's not that small :)
+Tycho343 I have a 1:1 macro, tokina 100 mm. This is a good bit closer than what my lens can achieve. It might be a cheap reversed lens though.
Diamonddavej well, that's just my opinion :) Note that video cameras are usually not full frame, but 1.5x cropped or even 2x or 3x cropped if it's micro-4/3.
I have both 1:1 100 mm and 1:1-5:1.
Are the sound actual recorded sounds of the incense burning, or are they recreated? I was just interested :)

It's all re-created. We would need an extremely silent room and very expensive sound recording equipment otherwise - even then I'm not sure if the sound of incense burning would be audible. So it's creatively interpreted. :)
Thats amazing! Can I ask how you so accurate recreate it? Like a kettle boiling ahah xD what did you use?
We actually recorded bacon frying on the stove. We also used the sound of wood burning mixed in with some rain and also some individual bubble pop noises, but manipulated it in an audio editor.

+Jordan Bartholme It's a mix of both, but mostly we've combined sound sources from elsewhere to creatively enhance the sound design. Our microphones are good, but not that good - it would sound mostly like static otherwise.

What incense burns this fast?
+DevilGodMan Some segments were sped up. In the top right of the video, you can see whether it's playing back at 100% or 300% speed. We used Chinese incense for this video, and it usually takes about 10-15 minutes for it to burn entirely.

+MultiSciGeek We may decide to remove the lines in the corners for future videos. Though the text/logo watermark we need to keep, because a lot of times this video gets stolen and reuploaded. Including Instagram, which crops the video into a square.
Stereokroma I completely agree with you watermarking your video. I just think the square kind of takes away the 16:9 aspect ration feeling. Otherwise great video :)
