Making neon lights seems like the perfect blend between art, science, design, and communication.

I feel like most of it is skill of knowing the medium and how it reacts, he has so much knowledge of the glass and neon from years of experience. The Art and design comes from making what the customer wants.

Dear artisan: you are thanking people for allowing you to make this video, and it's OK, but I want to thank you for explaining such kindly how neon signs are made. I've been wanting to know this for all my life and it turns out to be as delightful to watch as I had thought it would.

fun thing is that this is the entire field of spectroscopy works. Different atoms emit different wavelengths of light when excited (electrified) from this we can determine the chemical composition of stars, the chemical composition of (some) planets orbiting other stars, and we can make cool signs as seen above! Blacklights emit UV light and the 'gas' used in them mercury vapor!

One of the manual Crafts / Arts that soon will be forgotten. Or NOT? Colorful, Highly skilled glass work, artistic and technical at the same time. Also scary: 10000 Volts can break your heart... Literally.
This is one of the crafts I would have liked to learn - if I were younger.

whelp! I thought the coloring is from the glass (or the LED) itself.. but now i know that your put some gas into the tube to make it colorful orz
And i love how humble he seems doing something so special like this, like mentioning glass blowing stuff, and that end of the video where he gave thanks.

Since I was a small child I was always fascinated by neon signs / neon art. I always wished I could have my own neon sign but as a kid getting my own neon was way out of reach. Over the years since then I have collected a few true glass neon signs. True glass neon is so much livelier and so much nicer than the fake imitation LED "neon" that has become popular these days. I do envy your skill and abilities in creating neon signs/art. I would love to learn how to build my own glass neon signs. Watching this video is very inspiring. It also reflects the years upon years of knowledge and skill that can only be acquired via hard work and devotion.

Wow what a great art. Always love seeing these in a malls or shops, gives me that 80s, 90s feel. Unfortunately we don;t see much of neon lights used in newer structures these days, LED has taken the spot for lighting. There will always be a spot for neon, as it's a long last art. Great video thank you, I learned a lot about this.

this is one of those things that really takes passion to learn, ive always been one that could watch a few tutorials an pick up how to do things an welding was the first thing i ran into that wasn't as easy as watching someone do it but took time for me to get decent an even now i dont consider myself a welder thats work is worth paying for cause its not pretty but is good enough for structural welding and this is the same thing im getting from this. there is a true artform to getting the glass to do what u want it to from the looks of things an isnt something that u can pick up from just looking but is going to take an input to see the reaction of the glass an i assume this takes alot of time, patience and quite a bit of material put into it just learning the feel of how glass moves at these temps an it looks like its getting the glass just hot enough for it to start to soften but not so hot that looses its shape an the blowing through the tube im guessing is either to help keep the inside cooler or to hold a positive pressure to keep the tube from collapsing. id love to get my hands on the stuff to give this a shot just cause i feel like this is another one of those dying techs due to the newer tech from leds.

This is the only video to watch if you need to understand only the most truely fundamental points of how neon lights are made. Thank you very much for your clear and concise approach to giving a wonderful inisight regarding an art which is timeless, as technical as could be desired, useful and truly beautiful. My admiration only increases to know the art is only a 100 years old and the tools applied nowadays in your shop may be much the same as they were then- however the manner in which the artists of old obtained the tools and material is certainly much different. If I had the time and tools, the piece I would make is a bronze divers' hat being submerged in a cool blue hue. Thanks again.
