  • Horrible Histories is pretty good. The reboot is not good. King John... maybe the worst. And Magna Carta... the best? Genghis Khan... GOOD?!
    And BBC copyright... definitely bad.

    You didn't even point out how the song says Magna Carta is what you're taught at school, even though Horrible Histories is supposed to be stuff they don't teach you at school.

      Gets even worse when the episode probably teaches less than what a school would teach about the Magna Carta so that's 100% against the point of the show

    We used to learn about the magna carta, before they decided they want to lower the reading age so the public couldn't scrutinise toe rag politicians as effectively.

    Kids know the difference between bad and good TV better than many adults seem to think
    I was born and raised in the US, but we would go to the UK once or twice a year to visit family. When I was about 10 or so (around when HH first started) I saw HH on CBBC and it became a side quest in my life to try to watch it every time we visited the UK
    It could only have seen a couple of episodes that first time but it STUCK with me
    Then as a teenager we had Netflix and on a trip to the UK the Netflix app on my phone repopulated with UK Netflix options. I saw HH on there and absolutely binged watched as much as possible before leaving
    And now it's on Hulu!
    The original was a really precious gem of television so it's unfortunated they seem to have not kept up the quality in the new version

    If given the choice between the old HH and the new it would be the old one every day. Its a shame they couldn't find the rite replacements for Mathew Baton and the 6 idiots.

    King John had to take over while Richard was away off to the Third Crusades while Richard nearly bankrupt the Angevin Empire yet he is potrayed as a villain. Though to be fair, John did get some help from his advisors and even his aging mother, Eleanor; sadly, after Richard Lionheart died of an infected wound from a crossbow bolt while besieging a rebel castle, things were all downhill for the Angevin Empire.The Kingdom of France immedaitly wasted no time by capturing the majority of the Angevin landsm with the exception of Gascony. In desperation to fund his war in France, King John taxed the HELL out of the barons which the barons were not too happy about since they not only lost land in France but were now heavily taxed by John after a costly tribute to get Richard Lionheart back from captivity.

    As and English-American schooled in the US, I will say some words in defense of the Magna Carta song:
    I had no idea the Magna Carta had anything to do with the American Revolution. I was never taught that. American schools seem to like to pretend the Founding Fathers pulled all their ideas from thin air. (But my school certainly let us know that the French Revolution was partially inspired by the American Revolution, bc that sounds really cool to Americans). I even remember getting the impression during a middle school history class that George Washington invented variolation? Not sure if that was the teacher's intention but that's how it sounded
    Anyway, after some research I found that the Magna Carta was used to boost the legitimacy of the Colonies' demands, and therefore their later Revolution. It probably also informed parts of the Constitution

    The only good thing about this episode was that it introduced to me "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)" by The Proclaimers.
    I remember watching the sixth season for the first time in 2018, when it was dubbed into Portuguese alongside with the fifth (final 2009-2013) season. At that time I had already disliked the dubbing itself for the fifth season, but when I got to watch the sixth, I was really embarrassed and shocked with disappointment,
    Dumb songs, dumb costumes, stories that come from nowhere and go to nowhere. I mean, if you write a sketch programme, like the original series, then there's nothing wrong with one sketch being dissociate from the other, but when you try to write a programme based entirely on a character, and there's no connection between the scenes and the general argument, then there's something pretty damn wrong with what you're trying to do.
    I watched it still, because there wasn't really anything else for me to do in the afternoons, when it was aired on TV.
    The seventh, eighth and ongoing seasons, nonetheless, I think I'll never watch. They were never dubbed, but even if they were, I would still not watch them. I tried one of the new episodes last year on BBC iPlayer, but everything felt so wrong and out of place. The songs are lacking a good production, the lyrics are too infantilized, they don't really tell anything, there are innumerous dialogues and small talks that lead you to nowhere. My impression is that the show is now viewed as some sort of a cartoon, where the characters are always silly, colorful, making faces and running around the same ideia until the episode is over. You summarized quite well when you said that the sketch about King John in the fourth season had the same amount of (or more) information than the whole episode in the new series.
    It's a shame that such a wonderful programme had to end like this. I wonder if even the children like this new format, for me, it's unbearable.

    When they could have cast anyone as King John, maybe someone who would be especially recognized by kids, why Ben Miller? I’m American and though I consumed a lot of British media, I was an adult already, even when the OG HH aired. Only other kids show I’ve watched was Peppa Pig, which my husband and I actually enjoyed even without kids watching with us. I watched OG Horrible Histories with my nieces though, because I’m a huge fan of history and wanted them to be, too.

    • @MasterSpud
      @MasterSpud  Před rokem +4

      Miller might have more recognition in Britain than the rest of the world as he was the main lead of Death in Paradise for some time, but I’m not sure how recognisable that would make him for children, and I think in general across Series 6 the guests only get more obscure so you can see why they eventually turned to bringing back members of the old casts or established talent like Rowan Atkinson.

    • @MegCazalet
      @MegCazalet Před měsícem

      @@MasterSpud Oh my never realized you replied! Thank you. Anyway, though a year late, I’ll add: I knew Ben Miller primarily FROM Death in Paradise, and couldn’t find any reason he’d be recognizable or especially suited for kids. I thought maybe, since HH often makes references to media that only adults would get, especially many of the songs they choose to parody, it could’ve been just something for the adults? But then I have to ask, would he have been a fun guest for the parents to enjoy?
      Or are we looking at it wrong, and perhaps they weren’t trying to get an attention-catching guest star? Which again, though, makes me wonder about missed opportunity.
      This was a GREAT video by the way, I’m here rewatching it and that’s why I came across your reply!
      ETA: This is all under the assumption that the casting of the lead character is a SPECIAL celebrating the 800th ANNIVERSARY of a major historical event/document would take the opportunity to choose a special actor for the role.

    8:38 Queen Elizabeth I did the very same thing, and bankrupted her hosts, too! How do they use this example as negative, when the one of the most revered monarchs did the same, or worse!? It’s so random and not even explained, just implied it’s a dick move.
