- With the exception of the first clip, this is not an O&A video. This is a compilation of all the times Norm Macdonald spoke on the topics of God, life, politics, ethics, and science across all media outlets. Norm was a deep thinker and always full of surprises. R.I.P. we lost a brilliant mind.
"I had a gambling addiction, but im over it."

That’s a real stream of consciousness right there.
Yeah, it's called conversation.
Why do you keep saying stream of consciousness?

Norm was a master of humor. He saw the funny in everything. Wish we could have had him longer.
Indeed😊
Norm is probably the guy I vibe with most in terms of 'spirituality'...
Rest in peace
Yes, he was so open-minded, smart, and hopeful. No "toxic positivity" or speaking down to anyone else. He had a very beautiful mind.
Thanks for putting this together.
I wish he'd done more stuff like this. He was an incredibly intelligent guy. I hope he found the afterlife he was looking for.

I went into rehab 2 weeks before COVID and you can’t have you’re phone there. I asked my Dad (who’s a big comedy fan) to get me Stanhope’s memoir and Norm’s. I was delivered Stanhope’s and Adam Corolla’s which I didn’t read or ask for and then the world shut down. 90 days later my friend took me home and and on my bed was Norm’s memoire with the message of “I already spent 30 grand to save your life, I wasn’t about to give you a masterpiece, and provide you a “cure” when I know you’d listen to Norm more than a very expensive therapist. Hope you liked Corolla.”

It is a really really funny book. With a lot of drug and addiction references.

I believe Norm’s deep thinking, truth searching nature was born out of his bleak environment and his struggle in his youth. He took a train as a 14 yr old kid here to Vancouver from the other side of Canada and was homeless here doing terrible jobs. Would’ve been in the mid 70s

I miss Norm and the old O&A show with Patrice O’Neal. Like Norm said in his book time goes by so fast.
Is there any audio of Patrice and Norm talking? That would be interesting.
@@bigmoose99I know of nothing recorded, but I remember hearing Norm say Patrice was one of his favorite comedians (post-passing but pre-BP-revival). I feel like he might’ve said Patrice was his favorite, but I distinctly remember Norm lighting up and speaking highly of Patrice’s intellectual rigor and independence. There was some online fiction I read about a death experiment: doctors found a way to kill someone, study what happens to their brain or consciousness then revive them in the hopes that they could ask them what they saw/experienced. In the story they "kill" the guy then revive him 7 days later and the subject is completely insane, raving mad and inconsolable. They find out from reading the graphs that while he was dead he experienced thousands of years worth of time in their 7 days. And it was just his consciousness with no vessel in an empty void of nothing. Aware but alone with nothing to attach to. If you ask me, that's a much scarier idea of hell than a bunch of fire and some guy poking you with a pitchfork.
How about 9/11?
“Right now I’m of no faith.”
But you’re looking for answers
“Yeah, I’ll find somethin.”

@@JimmyJamesJimbo It was a joke about today's technology. People are slaves to their devices. I unplugged from time to time. There is no technology in the woods.
The sad realization is that the funniest people are often the saddest. It’s not their jokes or wit, but rather their ability to laugh at the absurdity of life, that makes them a true comic. Existence brings with it a dark reality, but at least laughter can make you feel better about it. The end result is the same, but at least you could feel a little bit better. That’s all any of us can ever hope for, is to feel a little bit better. Norm made me feel a little bit better. God bless his soul.
As someone who would call themselves an "agnostic", I love hearing religion or spirituality spoken of in this way. It's fun. Have fun, and contemplate life.
I think this is the closest we’ve come to understanding where Norm got his ideas from.
Damn I miss this dude.
A research of science makes you a scientist, an in depth understanding of science makes you a believer of God.
This sounds like it was written by someone who has never interacted with science
Norm really did give us some hints. I feel like I remember listening to the nerdiest episode and feel g something strange.
But that’s how looking back on the past can be. I might be completely making that up and it’s just because I cared a lot for Norm.
Ah well. If there was ever a comedian I would have cared to meet and tell that he changed how I looked at everything, it was this man. ❤😢
I've had the same feeling. Many fans have. There were moments where it's possible he was giving hints at his cancer or behaving a certain way because of it but unfortunately there's no way to know. And as he says our memory isn't objective or reliable. Such a Norm move to leave us guessing like that.
You should’ve had hindsight
This is wonderful! I've never heard Norm speak "seriously" for this long. Love to hear it. He was so smart.
It’s wonderful the way he put his words together. In my opinion the greatest comedian of all time. Such a lovely human. And I’m an atheist.
Love hearing everything Norm
Dont under appreciate quality intelligent conversation. It feels good to hear actual genuine talk. This is a real conversation , calculated, giving each other moments to mull subjects over. Norm Macdonald always reminds me I don’t want to die
Its amazing listening to him knowing its all real thoughts and not a set up
Norm didn’t hate sunsets, he hated that people loved them so much, or were distracted by them enough that they weren’t thinking about what will happen to them when they die. It’s the way it’s supposed to be but it doesn’t work as good on really smart people.
What? Huh?
Yeah yeah yeah. Really smart people can't surmount nihilism. 😎
I always thought of it as him hating them because they weren’t thinking about getting their next meal…
What a fantastic artist Norm was. I hope he got something from the interviewer that corrected him on his misconceptions.

The more I know about this Norm fella, the more I like him. I've been having sweaty, fevered dreams of Norm. I'd like to meet him sometime...shit he's vanished! Just my luck!
Very wise. Rest in power norm you won’t be forgotten 🙏
Greatest comedian of all time.
Norm admitted his intellect was untrained. He didn’t do well on the subjects of religion, politics and philosophy, but then, neither do the experts in those fields. He had wisdom of ordinary life, which you could equate to comedy.
It is the real wisdom in any case.
Hell of a lot smarter than most of the 'trained' intellect I have met.
“Go through the chimney” Norm😢, there will never be another Norm
Norm's view that no one truly believes they are just an insect is an enlightening one. Nihilism is based on the importance of what humans choose to do with their limited time, knowing that they will die. But if you take the fatalistic view that our choices are as base and programmed as any insect, then some form of spirituality is the only way out.
Either some spiritual essence pervades humanity, or we are too stupid to ever grasp the fullness of our own ignorance. Even people like me, who believe that life is a horrific joke, fail to conduct ourselves as if it were.

I'm am atheist and Norm's views on God do not make sense to me, but I wouldn't want him not believe in God. An atheist Norm wouldn't feel like the Norm we all love.
There'd be no point in doing the month long vacation in the hypothetical. If you have no memory and nothing of substance to bring back with you, it's as though literally nothing happened. All that's happened is you wasted a month.
But thats just how life works. You live your life and then everything's gone
@@PaddysPianohence why it's important to have a memory.
People didn't know when to take Norm seriously because he was such a smart ass.
I think Norm was very intelligent, but here he has a lot of claims about how atheists think. I am an atheist and I don't agree with his assertions on how I think. I agree much more with him than he would have thought.
If you look into perrenialism you may get a better idea of what the people who created these religions may have been trying to do.
l too notice that religious people often try to rationalize something about atheists that isn't true. But it's to be expected. After all, their tendency to try and rationalize things that aren't true, is the very process that allowed them their religious beliefs in the first place.
If you interact with atheists online you’ll see that he’s pretty much spot on for a large number of atheists particularly of the New Atheist type ie repeated references to logic, the idea that all beliefs without empirical evidence are false or irrational, the presumption that theism is false, inability to apprehend that theism is a worldview and religion a way of life rather than an hypothesis or a set of beliefs, straw man reductive remarks like “sky daddy” etc. etc. I’ve had quite a lot of conversations with atheists online and I have noticed these as commonalities.
@@EVSmith-by9noI mean how are you approaching these “online atheists” in these conversations? As I mean I think it’s understandable why some atheist might have a great deal of frustration with theists. Atheists have historically been prejudiced against in the predominantly religious communities, and on top of that from the perspective of the atheists, they are having to talk down other people from believing in things like actual demons and shit existing and being in the real world. Like that’s a hop skip and a jump from talking dragons and goblins existing. It feels as if there is literally a break in reality with theists and to be able to achieve a debate/conversation in good faith, there has to be some consensus on the fundamentals of reality and the world.
@@EVSmith-by9noYou'll find obnoxious and extreme types in every community. I've also spoken to a lot of horribly condescending and sometimes downright venomous religious people.
I'd be willing to admit that it's more common amongst atheist though, as they don't hold themselves to any kind of objective moral standards.
I wish I could go back into time, to speak with him. I suppose I may have the chance to go forward and meet him someday.
28:00 I've considered the consequence of proving that God is. It would be unfair. It would be a crushing apocalypse to the converted. It could be so terrifying that the person learning the truth could lose their minds. Even if they already believed, that revelation may not be comforting. Because, faith is a barrier to consequence. Many of us are so concerned with if, we don't think of what happens next. Then the question becomes, since God does exist, why am I who I am? Why was I born to suffer? Why do I live, only to die?
Such questions can only be settled by wisdom, patience, humility, and knowledge. It's more than we can handle while also living a life among others. It would be like analysing a replay of your first lap, while racing to the finish line.
Norm... He was more curious and wonderful than I realized. I am glad his voice echos in his absence. His absence does cause me sorrow. I am glad he lived. Perhaps God is pleased with him.
What is the last interview from? When he is talking about the idea of God and finding purpose?
12:41 you can definitely focus on more than one thing at a time. That's why we drive and talk on the phone and listen to podcasts and text simultaneously.
Everything that begins to exist has a cause. Thats a scientific truth.
It's driving me crazy, is one of the interviewers Jesse Scaturro who does the yannis pappas podcast?
Man totally in agreement with norm until the last interview. I basically agree with nothing he said there but the most striking to me (and the common sound bite I hear) is that there’s no purpose to life without god. Since we exist, and can experience both good and bad things, clearly the purpose to life is to experience more of the good up to the end of our lifetime
Yeah, I wish he was asked what purpose God would give us. Like, you die and go to heaven, now what? Your purpose is just to chill and enjoy eternity? To what end? It would be no different than what we are doing now. One things leads to another, but forever instead of it coming to an end. What could possibly be the inherent purpose of anything, with or without God lol.

What podcast/radio is this?😊
''I bet you're not'' was a perfect joke.
The idea of consciousness going on and there being nothing is whats called the void.
I can’t think of a greater mismatch in personalities than Anthony and Norm.
When Norm was talking about why God put evil in the world I think he right about evil creating good etc. To add to that I think that a world with only good is not good. You need bad times to appreciate the good ones. Also if there is only good free will could not exist. That is why I think if God does exist he would allow evil to exist. A all good world is not as good as what it seems to be. I think I got that from a Jordan Peterson Clip but it stayed with me ever since, because I always wondered if there is a God why would evil/bad things exist.
This makes heaven pointless.
Absolutely I’d still spend a month on the island with the beautiful woman…. It isn’t necessary that we recall the minutia of that which we’ve experienced for that experience to have nourished our souls.
Imagine how much angst, worry, frustration & anxiety one would flush from their systems if they could shelve the tedium of impending existential dread for a month and pork *insert dream women* for a month.
I like you and this thought
@@Godshonestruth my brother. ✊
Norm is asking if you would choose to have the experience if you knew you would never be able to remember it, but I agree with you that the only reason not to choose a potentially positive experience would be if you wouldn't be able to absorb and enjoy the experience in the moment. Maybe Norm is considering the lack of any memory to be a negation of the, in the moment, absorption and enjoyment just for enjoyments sake. He seems to be saying that the experience no longer exists if you can't remember it, but I wouldn't agree with that. Wasn't he promoting or rather approving of the idea of living in the moment, but then choosing to pass on doing just that because he wouldn't be able to remember that month of moments?...??? He did say, though, if I'm remembering correctly, that we live in the past.
@rickwilson478 people also get black out drunk and don't remember then do it again so they must have had fun even if they don't remember.
Sane with some psychedelics and having some revelation about something that makes perfect sense at the time but then you can't quite remember the thought & emotion connected to it but you remember you enjoyed it so you do it again.

That bloat face period he went through (like in the thumbnail) really had me worried for him, but it turns out it was just side effects of the cancer medication, and the liquor and the botched plastic surgery, and he slimmed right back down at the end, so that was nice to see. It was nicer than knowing he was sick.
I didn’t even know he was sick.
@@gandolfwhite7323 Just thinking of it all reminds me of that tragedy.
I love Norm. I listen to the same clips over and over again and i miss him and hate that there will be no more.
Now that that qualification is out of the way, his thoughts on science and religion were half baked at best. His arguments, though stated with a thoughtful tone, were riddled with holes. The last host was kind in the way he interviewed Norm without interruption, and responded with great questions. I rememeber listening to this stuff before he died and thought he sounded retarded.
It makes me sad to know the context of his faith and his impending death. Who knows, when i find out that my death is in sight, i might adopt the same logicless but hopeful "intuitions" as well.
Yeah you hit the nail on the head with this one. Respect the hell out of the guy, hope he found his peace. However he really fell into some bad logical holes there with religion and this perceived attack on Christianity by atheists that I think is sadly pretty wide spread. Essentially viewing atheists as the caricatures they appear as in movies like gods not dead. People with an axe to grind against god, or what not.
After listening to a lot of his talks I think what really at least put him where he was on those topics was his lack of faith in mankind in general, himself included, like when he said he thought it was essentially folly for man to think we can make our own purposes. I couldn’t disagree with him more. He seemed like he had a real thorn of cynicism in his soul for his fellow man :\
And lose your smugness hopefully
When talking about how scientists were researching the cosmos instead of a potential afterlife, with hindsight, he comes off as a man very desperate and alone. I think that feeling sinks into some people as they see the end approach. It was right over the horizon for him. So “why are we pointing our telescopes to literal empty space instead?”, he asks. That’s some people’s purpose, Norm. They’re doing what they want and what they love. I hope he loved the things he chose to fill his life with before the end, too.
Does anyone know what interviews these clips are from? Specifically the one talking about faith, a benevolent higher power, and how he’s closest to Judaism at that time.

Given comics are very much ego driven creatures (more so) and the very best one’s minds seem to act like super-computers persistently absorbing, reflecting upon, reconfiguring etc …. I imagine it would be doubly hard switching those bad boys off and sucking in some prana.
In the Old Testament, the prophet Isaiah says:
(Isaiah 53, Douay-Rheims)
Who hath believed our report? and to whom is the arm of the Lord revealed?
And he shall grow up as a tender plant before him, and as a root out of a thirsty ground: there is no beauty in him, nor comeliness: and we have seen him, and there was no sightliness, that we should be desirous of him:
Despised, and the most abject of men, a man of sorrows, and acquainted with infirmity: and his look was as it were hidden and despised, whereupon we esteemed him not.
Surely he hath borne our infirmities and carried our sorrows: and we have thought him as it were a leper, and as one struck by God and afflicted.
But he was wounded for our iniquities, he was bruised for our sins: the chastisement of our peace was upon him, and by his bruises we are healed.
All we like sheep have gone astray, every one hath turned aside into his own way: and the Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.
He was offered because it was his own will, and he opened not his mouth: he shall be led as a sheep to the slaughter, and shall be dumb as a lamb before his shearer, and he shall not open his mouth.
He was taken away from distress, and from judgment: who shall declare his generation? because he is cut off out of the land of the living: for the wickedness of my people have I struck him.
And he shall give the ungodly for his burial, and the rich for his death: because he hath done no iniquity, neither was there deceit in his mouth.
And the Lord was pleased to bruise him in infirmity: if he shall lay down his life for sin, he shall see a long-lived seed, and the will of the Lord shall be prosperous in his hand.
Because his soul hath laboured, he shall see and be filled: by his knowledge shall this my just servant justify many, and he shall bear their iniquities.
Therefore will I distribute to him very many, and he shall divide the spoils of the strong, because he hath delivered his soul unto death, and was reputed with the wicked: and he hath borne the sins of many, and hath prayed for the transgressors.

Rest in peace, Norm. I still remember you, brother.
The one time I think Norm is wrong: about science. Seems to not understand that Einstein worked with way more than intuition, and was peer reviewed and both proven right and wrong. He even doubted his own intuition based on the evidence of the time, sich as gravitational waves.
He was a comedian FFS🤦🏻♂🤦🏻♂
Exactly. Smart enough to do interesting comedy. About it. The rest is pretty childish
I think he’s correct. If you reflect on scientific method, where do hypotheses come from if not intuition? Call it pattern recognition if you like, but that step of scientific method, of having an idea to test, is a bit mysterious. Einstein tells a story of seeing a worker falling from a roof and he realized that the worker doesn’t feel the pull of gravity while in free fall. Intuition seems like a pretty good word for that realization.
