Norm was the boy in the Tiny White Coffin. He was the boy fighting courageously against a terminal illness. He was also himself in the story, having confronted death, he walked alone down that long black road and never saw things the same again- just white clouds and nothing more. Damn he was brilliant.

He had stomach cancer as a teenager. He succumbs to stomach cancer in his early 60s. He was a math whiz as a child. He was terribly shy on stage when he started. He loved comedy. Like any great poker player, he kept his cards close to the vest. I appreciate that he knew the absurdity of fame. He remained true to his craft and himself. Norm thought for himself. That's why I admire him.

I'm German and without CZcams I probably wouldn't even know who Norm McDonald was. Same goes for greats like George Carlin, Bill Hicks and Mitch Hedberg. To think that I'm only 34 and tons of my favorite comedians are already dead (RIP Bob Saget), is a really odd feeling. We understand pretty clearly that the internet has become a sort of prism which changes the structure of the public into all its distinguishable streams, creating many parallel cultures living side by side, but to think that the preservation of colored high resolution images of almost every culturally meaningful act will actually be able to transport people into cultures across the barriers of time is rather new. Imagine watching interviews of Mozart and performances of Liszt. They have been lost to time forever and only live on in the form of paper and musical academic tradition. Yet what the future will hold for generations born hundreds of years from now - and just like people are into old jazz, old country and classical music, there will always be fans of a certain era within a culture - is nothing short of the entire cultural fund of a world that has been gone for hundreds of years. The implications of societies being made up of individuals who have almost no common cultural ground will lead to a complete reorganization of a global public sooner or later. It's a frightening chance for humanity and it is all caused by people who watch some old comedy videos on CZcams and those who upload it for clicks.

And the phrasing the delivery is so gorgeous that it deserves to be heard in audio format. Glad that it exists . His writing is so fluid and brilliant it's impossible to believe it's his first and only published written work. I know he has mentioned how all he ever wanted to do was stand up and write short Stories. There is plenty of Norm's stand up for all to see, but it's unfortunate we may never get another written work.

When Norm pauses after reading aloud "The Tiny White Coffin", he says, "something like that really happened," and never reveals what he's talking about. I think it's the boy killing the seal is a metaphor for Norm's internal Hope for some miraculous recovery. Like the boy. That the boy gets hit by a bus has no relevance to the metaphor. I think Norm chokes up because he has an eternal Hope that he would somehow recover.

11:51 "au courant" is what I think he said. Wrongly pronounced, though. However Norm has several times in interviews revealed his underlying intelligence and education. His shtick is to act a little less than average so that he is liked by the majority of people. The audio is excellent. Thanks.

Thank you so much for this. Really. From the bottom of my heart. ❤ To me it’s heartbreaking not only that he died relatively young but that he spent his last months in the hospital. This video is a treasure.

It’s a pleasure to see him in this setting. Thank you for sharing and making this moment happen. Always expecting The funny, but Norm’s facility with imagery brought the truth along with the laughs in such a unique and surprising way. Wish I could get the final cloud observation out of my head or his genuine reaction to reading it but some losses stick with you, especially when there are beautifully crafted pictures to along.
