  • MotoMan drives the 2017 Volvo V90 Cross Country station wagon on an off road trail to demonstrate the difference between this latest Volvo 90 series car and the standard Volvo V90 Estate we drove on the stunning roads of southern Spain. Along the way with the stunning Sonoran desert as a backdrop, he tries a couple of things the Volvo V90 Cross Country Station Wagon was not designed for . . .

To be fair, it is a wagon that Volvo advertises as being able to go offroad. It's called cross country for a reason. This is not the same as SUV race tracking

I ordered a V90CC in 2017, fully loaded and we absolutely love it! If they offered it in a T8 we would trade up, but no one is taking my V90 away from us! We use it regularly for camping with a roof top tent and it’s wonderful to get where you need to go in complete comfort and style.

An answer your question why; because i live in the most northerly city in Canada, and drive to Jasper National Park to ski; In the winter time.... Volvo will sell more V90 CC in this city than in the whole of the southern USA combined, that's not a bad thing, just saying. I love how the car handles way past excellent on the city track, gravel and snow; relentless power and stability, and then it parks itself.

As an owner of a 2002 V70XC Ocean Race, I'd pick the V90 in Cross Country trim. Mine sees a lot of duty off road down here in the Everglades or back home in the Ocala National Forest. It goes everywhere I want it to and is way more comfortable than a pickup or my buddy's Jeep. It can't go everywhere but Florida is really lacking in the rock crawling trail department so, no issues for me there. I think the V90 Cross Country would be very welcome in my driveway.

And observation after the v90 an v90 CC have been around a while: Volvo's US website "inventory" shows 54 V90 "nearby" my location (NYC) and 74 V90CC in the same range. (They don't give me an option to search nationally.) In any case, it appears that although Volvo told us the V90 would be special order only, they have shipped a few to our shores. It's possible they are only available in the largest markets, but you can get one if you want it. (I'd have to try them both, as well as the V60, before making up my mind.) Inventory doesn't tell me how many they're selling, or have sold, but it does reveal that there are V90s available.

V90, I've always wanted to do a cross continent trip in North America. so far it's about 40,000 miles long. goes from the tiny Canadian town of Inuvik to the Border wall, Alaska to Newfoundland. Probably will end up venturing into Mexico as well. I'd like something that looks a bit more stylish since I prefer Wagon(oid)s over SUVs. If I had $60k lying around for a car I'd probably end up with a Volvo. But right now it's looking bleak for a 20 year old photographer to afford one haha

  • @yippie6862

  • @seanki

Seems like a very capable car, however.. I would definitely go with the R-design V90 with 21" rims and bursting blue metallic (plus the sporty package to give it a more agressive look). I would not choose the active chassi and just stick with the sport chassi, one more detail.. I'd go for the T8.
However.. say I was in a different position and had to take kids and things like that into account. Or if I was driving a lot when working, or just had a lifestyle filled with hobbies that would mean road trips and all vacations with the car, then I'd go for the cross country.

By the way, take a look at the instrument gauges on the Buick Regal and compare them to the Opel Insignia. The Regal got some ugly cluster that doesn't fit well with the rest of the vehicle. What they should have done is used the same gauges as the LaCrosse (also on the Insignia).

One big difference between the V90 and the XC90 is the seating. If you have kids and need to cart more than two on a regular basis, you basically have to go for a three-row six or seven-seater XC90. With that said, I would absolutely choose the V90CC because of the utility, the low-slung seating position, and the driving experience.

Both are beautiful and I'm glad that both are available stateside, but give me the V90 R design Instead of the xc90. Aesthetically I prefer the cleaner and more reserved look of the V90. From a practical standpoint the V90 will likely have more dynamic handling on the road as well as better efficiency than the XC90. Also, for my needs I rarely ever need to go off road. if I ever find my self off road I'm sure the V90 is capable of 85% of everything the XC90.

Tell Stefan- that it is ridiclous that you can't order/get a V90 or XC90 with Blonde interior and R-design- they don't currently offer ANY other color interior other than BLACK on R-design- that is nonsense! This is "supposed" to be a luxury car then offer me the luxury of ANY INTERIOR COLOR that Volvo offers on ANY Of their products. AND the same goes with the interior trim options, let me choose from ALL of them on ANY trim. Thanks

Good news: Stefan actually reads these comments - so you already told him. Bad news: Sadly, the decision is not up to him. Think of him as the 'Global' guy. He makes the car. Then the markets (US, UK, AU, DE, etc.) decide which versions they want as well as some specifics.

This inflexible policy surely loses potential customers -- like me, a three-time Volvo wagon owner. For example, Volvo online configurators in countries like Sweden, UK, and Germany show that you can get the V90 CC T6 without glass roofs (saving about $2k), with CD player, with more colors (like Mussel Blue Metallic), and even with 18-inch wheels -- none of which are options in the USA. Can't figure out why other countries get many more options than we do. Bad thinking on Volvo's part.

  • @ericschoenleber2533
    @ericschoenleber2533 Před 4 lety

I make the point all the time to people that an SUV is just a wagon with more ground clearance and headroom. Those are the only two plus points that can be claimed, in my opinion. No matter what people say, they don't even take their SUVs off-road for the very most part. Usually, I really like body-colored fender flares, but in this instance, I'd go with the black ones, because they're very likely to hold up to light scratches way better for the few, like me, who actually would take it through some trails.
.3" of ground clearance difference between a V90XC and an XC90 absolutely clinches the decision for me between the two. It's so negligible that is as good as forgettable.
The optional flip-down trailer ball is really cool, too, but a flip-down 2" receiver would have been even more useful for me.
The biggest upside to me, is I've seen a whole bunch of XC90s, a few S90s, but I have yet to see even one V90, let alone a XC in the wild, at least where I live.
I found myself the other day wondering if anyone made a decent lift kit for AWD Dodge Magnums, because I think that would be cool, too.
Anyway, cool review. But, I have to say, our minimum maintenance roads make that trail you were on look tame. ;)
I'm wondering now what the smallest wheel diameter that would still clear the calipers would be, so I can shop for some all-terrain tires.
I'll have to buy some old used Volvo wheels and try them on, I suppose.

to be fair, a FWD $200 junk ecobox car could have handled all of where he took it, but i guess that's the other argument being made; people think they need that extra off road capability when in reality 99.9% of them dont. i would say most everyone i asked them why they got SUvs one of their answers is that they want versatility to be able to go offroad, even though most SUVs are completely useless offroad, like ford ecosport and escape. i had to rescue a friend who tried taking their escape up a little trail wasn't even difficult, just mostly loose gravel with holes and trees on side, he got stuck cuz one of his front wheels was spinning freely in a hole and other tires on loose gravel so the traction control system was way in over its head, that easily defeated. i used my volvo wagon (XC70) and pulled him right out. i even drove threw same hole took same line as he did and i didnt get stuck in my wagon..

I chose the Audi SQ5. Why? Air suspension I can lower below the non-CC V90. So it looks better. 6 cylinders so reliability probably better than a 4 pushed to hard with turbo and supercharger. And lastly, can be seen in the US. That alone lost my interest in a V90.
Make the CC with adjustable suspension to go as low as a V90 non-CC, and have some on dealer lots and I’d consider it.

Ironically new cars are extremely expensive in South and Central America, Africa, South, South-East, East Asia, Australia, Scandinavia which makes prices in the USA, Canada, Western, Central and especially Eastern Europe a real bargain.

Arghh! Don't put your (presumably) dirty shoes on that beautiful perforated Nappa leather!! Also, too bad the V90 is order only. Either way, I don't see it last longer than 2 years since no one will even know it existed so it will become extremely rare. Shame though, a bursting blue V90 R-Design with 20 inch sport rims or an onyx black metallic Inscription with 21 inch 5 spoke turbine rims (look it up, they are amazing) sure are quite the lookers!!

I bet in a few year, they will only keep the V90 CC and offer the body cladding to be the same as the rest of the car so that those who want a regular V90 would at least get one that somewhat looks like one.

The V90 is MUCH more sleek and attractive looking than the Cross Country version. I have no idea why Americans would prefer the Cross Country version because most luxury SUVs don’t come off the pavement anyway.

Why would you ever buy an SUV? I can sort of understand the XC90 as it has 7 seats, and unlike most SUVs it was designed for families, not executives and WAGs. It's the only SUV I know of which has the option of a 'kick guard' which protects the leather seats from children grinding mud on the leather. It's also quite a lot better looking and less vulgar than the other SUVs on sale. But I'd rather have the Cross Country than any, even a Range Rover.

XC70 was perfect, if this V90CC could replace that--bit too big tough. Test is too tame, drive it really rough off road like the Russians do with the XC70, like a Subaru and Jeep.
