    The first time I ever played I built a treehouse because I figured it was the safest. After a few ingame weeks of gathering resources, building traps and border fortifications during the day and cowering in the treehouse at night a mutant patrol came and fucking knocked down the tree

    I just want to point out how genius the mechanic of the cannibals dragging you to the caves actually is.
    Not only is it a great way to force the players hand and introduce them to the caves and throwing them in deep water, it’s not only terrifying, but it’s also a great way to get around a ‘game over’ screen. Tension would be immediately lost once you realise you just hit ‘load last save’.
    Sure you still understand they are a threat, more than ever now that the mystery of fighting them is gone, but that mystery is what keeps it unnerving.

    • @VeraVemaVena
      @VeraVemaVena Před 3 lety

      Unfortunately you don't always get thrown into the caves. If you die in a certain way, you either just reload to your last save or die permanently (I believe it's based on difficulty)

    Okay, for going through forests, you need to make sure you have a machete, in case you get tangled up in branches and stuff. Also an older style hockey mask, because there are always branches just at head height that will get you in the face if you aren't protected. Lastly, you should go at night. You can go during the day, but trees have terrible night vision, so it's just safer for everyone involved.

  • @sloganwade4994
    @sloganwade4994 Před 2 lety +1

    When you have tree regrowth turned on, you can prevent a tree from regrowing by destroying the stump. Trees also always fall away from you, so if you face away from your base when you finish chopping, it won't fall on your base unless it bounces off of another tree. Walking around trees also don't chop them faster btw. It looks like it would, but it takes the same amount of chops even if you stand still, so the only reason to circle a tree is to keep an eye out for mutants.

    • @stuglife5514
      @stuglife5514 Před 4 měsíci +1

      It really depends on your behavior when they’re around, and if you’re chopping trees *in* their territory. It also depends on if you’ve previously been hostile with then. But generally speaking, they’ll stick to mostly being curious with the occasional testing of your resolve to see what you’ll do. If you stick to a nomadic lifestyle, run from canibals whenever you see them, they’ll mostly leave you alone. I once made it 17 days without a single fight with a canibal. But that requires alot of patience and the ability to not hit a canibal when one just thwacked you across the head. But if you’ve been well behaved, not chopping trees will make them not so prone to be aggressive. But that also depends on the temperament of the tribe and the individual AI tribesmen your dealing with.

    I *strongly* recommend playing the Forest in the order Charl lists. If you skip base building and go for the caves early on, then the great cave gear makes combat pretty trivial and ruins any scariness the game had. I definitely wish I'd built a big base my first time, so I could really fuck around with the natives while I was still underpowered.

    Though it might detract from some fun in the game, building a large base is entirely optional. I got through the whole game with 2 boathouses and a few tree houses spread out through the island. Went for a more nomadic/stealth approach and only fought when absolutely necessary or in caves.
    If you learn to hunt with the bow, you'll never run out of food. Only needed some water collectors and drying racks in each base.
    Avoiding the mutants whenever possible saves you a LOT of trouble and resources. I know you miss out on the base defense minigame, but I was more into the cave exploration

    The Forest is one of my favorite games, and I really think it’s because I played with a friend. At the beginning, we were hesitant to go into caves, had a home on an island to avoid enemies, and generally didn’t do much to provoke the cannibals. By the end, we were actively fighting enemies to burn them for bones, luring the mutants around to knock down trees for us, and nearly 100%ed the game. I don’t think I’ve ever played a game like it before or since. Even without the superb survival aspect of the game, the horror and story were so engaging that my friend and I stayed up late almost every night poring over the lore we had discovered, making guesses as to what had happened on the island, and generally being way too into it. The power of two people with ADHD focused on the same thing will do wonders! Anyways, awesome video, you nailed exactly how this game is so good at what it does. I’m so excited for the sequel!

    My friends and I made this big base at the coast... Which turned into a strange wild west town with a bridge out to distant islands. We assigned roles to one another, one was a priest, I was an innkeeper, another was a shopkeeper, some were assigned to security and such... And then we roleplayed out a strange colony slowly going mad and becoming as bad as, if not worse than, the cannibals.
    Case in point, the priest was secretly hiding a room full of mutant limbs he would snack on at the back of his church.
    And even worse; every night we would lure a normal cannibal into the center of the village, past the big walls, and onto a platform with a rope trap. He would hang upside down while the priest gave a sermon, followed by us pelting him with stones, and ending with us setting him on fire with an aerosol can. Good times...
