Mackerel is one of my all time favorite eating fish. I love it in sashimi, salted and fried, and especially love it grilled. Something about that oily, fishy taste that no other fish has. Mackerel is tops for me.
Glad to see the closed caption on this on. I take care of an elderly lady and the CC helps at night so I don't wake her and I don't have to put ear buds in so I can still hear her.

I went beach foraging today, had a few snails, you know, I'm a total amateur, but i picked up one of those little fish (Blenny?) and held it in my hand just like on a Smash vid. I said "woo" as well.

Love it when you are out fishing with Dad,not only does he know where the Lobsters are.. he can certainly catch fish as well.

Great stuff Jay. Personally though, I see no need to add anything at all to fresh-caught mackerel. Gutted and gilled, then straight on the disposable barbie wrapped in tin foil.
During the summer, I am happy to pay the incoming boats for a handful of fresh mack, get them underway and sit out with a pint watching the sunset. Bloody awesome!

Try making your own smoker from an old fridge set up on top of old steel drum. If gap between drum and smoker isn't far then it will produce hot smoked fish. I built one more than 20 years back in New Zealand. It got a lot of use.

There's plenty of makeral here off the coast of Monterey, CA. Would love to fish with you blokes if your ever in this neck of the woodsđșđž
Smoke it you will know when you try what you missed all these years đ salt it heavy( drown it in salt) in the evening after 12-20h it is ready to smoke just wash of the salt put it in the smoker with correct wood chips and after 15min or so you will be amazed đ
Smoked mackerel is very very good! You need lots cause you can't stop eating it!!!

if you hold the fish from its head it will bend under its owe weight and open up those slits for the seasoning to penetrat

Shame about the cuckoo wrasse: I agree that it's a very pretty fish. The mackerel are nice looking, too, and it was awesome to get to see what they looked like from above. i can appreciate now how good that striped pattern would be as camouflage in the water.
I was just thinking about smoked mackrel and then you said you were going to do smoke some fish this year.
YBS would say itâs glassy mate all the time but thereâs nothing more English than a millpond.
