the pixies in their prime
sparrowhead hawkins without a doubt
@curragh 42 They were still brilliant at the academy 2 years ago and hopefully will be next July supporting Pearl Jam in Hyde Park.
@curragh 42 that's their fledgling years, Bossanova and Trompe Le Monde were unbelievable albums and a clear sign of a progressing band, plus all the years of touring the older material how can you say this isn't them at their peak?
@curragh 42 not live. They had a way thinner sound. Saw them on Doolittle and TDL tours. This performance is just more precise. Louder. Never seen Black Francis this committed to a vocal performance. The TDL tour was spectacular.
@curragh 42 I agree with Patrick, I don't think the turmoil is that important when talking about a band at their peak live, this is after all of those crazy long tours, they've adapted and perfected the older tunes, they've all become tighter and better musicians over that period of time, sure the earlier stuff had catchier songs on but would you say Nevermind was Nirvana's musical peak? No chance for me, and tbh I always find myself going back to Bossanova and Trompe more than the earlier material, I think they're better albums personally!
You know what I love about Frank Black? There is no attempt too strut around on stage and act 'cool' - he just stands there with his guitar and belts out great song after great song. He can let the music speak for him.
He doesn't have to act cool, he just is.
Yeah and his very unassuming, average guy appearance just made him even more rock and roll.
Good musicians
100 % you ‘ re right!
That's bcuz he's not, " A Rock-Star ! "
Seeing 'Tool' is the same. Too Professional to dance around the Stage, like their Janet Jackson, or something. It's so impressive seeing those guys just standing there while this dark sounding music is inundating everybody.
The way Frank screams/growls the word "debaser" while Kim sings the same word like an angel, Joey's instrument whales/moans like a tortured woman, and David pounds away, pulsating, like blood pumping through it all ... THAT captures the Pixies for me. God, man, woman, and the devil, in every one of their songs, and their songs will live forever. Greatest band ever.
Nailed it. The way he screams the whole building down in River Euphrates too, "ONE SIP FROM THE SALTY WIIIINE"! It comes out of nowhere but fits perfectly and captures them as you said.
Dude… get a fucking life asshole
fuck yeah
I bought Doolittle right after I graduated high school and I had just started a new job. I got off work at 11p, went to Tower Records (open til midnight 😎), got home and popped it in my cassette boombox. I remember thinking that I had a lot of living to experience, and this was going to make a great soundtrack for it. 35 years later, so far, so good.

I was there. I was 16. It was total chaos. It was amazing 🤘
I'm jealousy.
Saw them supporting Jane's Addiction and being supported by Primus a few months before in Brixton. Quite a night. :D
Me too, but I was 26 and Australian in London, on mushrooms and moshing out like my life was gonna end (it might have…)
So jealous, I'm gonna get to see them next year, but it's not the same without Kim and The Breeders are not touring anymore I think, it's sad, Kim just have something that appeals me to see her live so much.
Me too. We bought tickets the day before, skived off work and travelled down to London on Weds afternoon. I'd been to London a few times before, but never to a gig. I will never forget the atmosphere. Got back home at 3am, didn't and couldn't sleep. Ticket is safe, still inside my Doolittle CD case.
Sigh, I'm still in love with Kim Deal till this day.
Ideal Gal. Plays Bas and v cute lol
Same
I sent her a paper-mail love letter when I was 15. That's was 1990.
are u lesbian and a moan?fuck her
Dammit! We all love Kim!
Could you imagine having the Pixies be your opening band? You watch them from the wings as they finish Tame and when it ends the stage manager taps you on the shoulder and says "OK. You're up." Nightmare fuel.
The greatest incentive to build a time machine...

Absolutely bonkers version!!! Without doubt, one of the wildest encores of all time. The delicious irony of the title never thicker!
No outrageous looks, no stupid make-up, no ridiculous poses with spread legs and pointed fingers...just some fucking great rock'n'roll songs !
Clone Abarbe that floral shirt is pretty outrageous
This performance of Tame never fails to give me chills
The faces in the crowd are art, just pure energy.
that's the first time I've seen Frank without a guitar
Agree, is one of best songs played live in my opinion, this live versión is better than the Lp recorded versión for me.
one of the only bands that will ever matter....so fucking original!
they are kicking as this summer - saw them 5 days ago in Belgium - the public got wild at one point - it was Incredible !!!! the Bass player is just who they needed - she plays fabulously well and loves being there .
Absolutely spec-fucking-tacular. Euphoric. Glorious.
The Brixton Academy has so many legendary gigs over its history. It's not the biggest venue but it's gotta be one of the best. In my experience anyway. Same for the Town n Country Club. I've seen 'big' bands play huge venues like Wembley or the 02 and it's just nowhere near the same.
I'm still watching it now and it never EVER gets old
As the years go by I appreciate Dave Lovering more and more... He deserves way more credit. Love his drumming and everything!
David is such a drumming machine here, unbelievably tight
He's technically the most proficient musician of the Pixies. The other including Frank Black are on the sloppy and quirky side but they're allowed to be because Lovering keeps the rythmic base tight otherwise it would be a total sonic mess.
@@deadstar44 exactly! and the sloppiness Black Francis defines the sound
Dave smoking a doob during "where is my mind", we love to see it!
He's a fine drummer. Tight.
Best two vocalists in alternative rock....Period! Kim sings like an angel and Charles is just so talented!
Definitely underrated
Not an angel, a pixie!
Kims vocals added so much to the songs. Charles and Kim together are magic.
Pity they treated her like shit
Whines like a wanker, you lot know jack shite about music
Pixies concerts from this era of their work deserved Stop Making Sense-esque treatment
This must be the most wild and brutal Pixies concert ever recorded
The happening is so underrated what a tune
i know right? its so damn good
Definitely. One of my favorite song!
Incredible here.
If I could go back in time and be in the front row of any concert, this is it. The absolute peak of Pixies performances....
It’s between this and Primus at Woodstock in 1994 for me
Not one damn comment about how awesome Joey's shirt is?
Until now.
the only thing I am more jealous of than francis' guitars are Santiagos shirts
Well, now that you mention it, I do prefer it more than Frank's.
very awesome
Break my Body is the most beautifully wicked, haunting , and violent song of them all, yet gets no respect as one of their greatest songs written.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE that song too. So original and yet catchy at the same time. It's creepy and cute....
Take as a privilege that you liked it Bro !
i'm with you
it's so tragic and killing
i slap it on the ass evcerytime I listen to. Thats a compliment...

Yes ~
out of the loop, is this a reference to something?
I dont think Kim could get anymore beautiful to me. Shes my ultimate crush. So beautiful. A natural beauty.
Totally agree with you because I believe you, I thought the same for me before reading you. It's a autentic beauty, and that is the true concept of the beauty, see a person doing for that she was making, it's the best. Sorry for my bad English, greetings from Mexico.
I hear you my 1991 self in junior high is crushing on her in this one!
She is a striking beauty. I saw the Pixies live (my first time) a few months prior to this show. I was in high school back then and I spent most of the show focused on her. By the time they played 'Gigantic,' the entire room was looking at her . . .
Im glad I'm not the only one who agrees.
Get back masher! She's mine forever!!!
David Lovering slams the drums for all he's worth while Joey Santiago churns out the best riffs and the lovely Kim Deal reels out some great bass while singing her heart out. Meanwhile Charles Thompson IV sings and screams and shouts his way through some of the best songs ever written. I saw this tour in 1991 and was blown away. Velouria! Gouge Away!
And what can you say about the 5th Pixie?
@@BMXOPHY The only cool thing I could say about Bob Santiago is that he's related to one of the greatest guitarists of all time lol
How do you sing like that for hours and still have a voice to call your own afterwards?
Vocal training and strong lungs and vocal chords
whiskey, strawberry milkshake, and a pack of Marlboro filters a day.
Didn't Franck Black have to get nodules removed from his vocal cords ?
Veni Vidi Vici Never seen a photo or video of him smoking ciggies tho. But from some interviews he definitely looked stoned to me, not to mention that it shows on his records.
I was thinking of nodules (may not be the right word)caused by screaming, leading to damage and scar tissue forming on the vocal cords. I think Chino Moreno and Frank Black had to undergo surgery because of it
best screamer ive ever heard. and i listen to a lot of metal.

Underrated??? In what kind of world do you live? I think they got all the fame and recognition they deserve. Pixies are one of the most underrated bands, they've had their sound from way before other bands like Nirvana
I think they've never been underrated
Not underrated, just underpopular
You're right The Pixies a greater band than generally given credit but Cobain cited The Pixies as one of his fav bands from one came many other bands remember you're really just hearing Black Francis on albums he is known for this he writes they play 😎👍🏻
This video ALONE.. Should be case enough for them to be in the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame.
Fuck the rock and roll hall of fame
Do you really want them in the same group with Kansas, journey, bon jovi,...
@@arrysarantidis1854 Kansas was pretty good.
Only ppl in the USA give a flying f about that dumb little club. Here in the UK it means zero. Is it like a special corridor full of busts? We tend to just sign these bands, make them huge, like Hendrix and Nirvana then we tell you who you're own decent bands are, and of course all the best pixies and nirvana gigs they saved for England on account of how we embraced them while the USA was grooving to zz top and motley cru (i bet they're in the horridor of power though, no doubt). If I was in a band I'd be pretty ashamed of belonging to such a 'club'. I think you all saw what 'winning' a Grammy means to an artist from the UK (and Ed Sheerhan doesn't count cause I said artist, and I hope I've spelled his name wrong as well, or Harry homoerotic styles) when Aphex Twin showed his awe by not bothering to even send a cringe acceptance video. He just stayed at home and chilled and probably didn't even know or care if it was even on. Trust me, this 'Rock n Roll Hall of Fame' (hhhhh) means absolutely nothing outside of America. Nobody with any integrity gives it one second of space in their brain.
Do they get inducted or initiated?
This is holy music.
29 amazing songs in 81 minutes!
what can be said of this performance that hasn’t been said before
black francis, one of the great songwriters of all time, looks like he works in the nuts and bolts section of a hardware store, joey looks like a salsa dance teacher, kim is every alternative guy’s dream woman, dave is tight as a drum
legendary screams, kim’s bouncy bass lines, joey’s guitar squeals, joey’s brother on 3rd guitar for no good reason
the best setlist ever
the best outro to a concert ever
legendary
I had the exact same thought about the hardware store guy 5min before reading your com lol
This , and the underlying humor, gives him the «serial killer rocker» vibe, after him I can think of Jay retard maybe in this vein
I love how they bust right on through, no fucking intros and wasted time. They're all playing/singing/screaming their asses off, especially Frank.
Love this performance. Band in their absolute prime, sound wise. No theatrics on stage. Just amazing musicianship. Kim is stunning too.
I like how Kim stands on her toes to reach the mic.
I like how Kim (fill in with anything)
So beautiful…..so young and original without pretense or gimmick they are truly one of the greatest and most unique rock bands . Original and unparalleled. They can go for thrashing punk reverb to melodic and hypnotizing in a single song.
Very well put considering that it is very difficult to categorise them. One of those rare bands that you really have to "get", let it "click" in your head and then you've discovered one of the best, most original bands in the history of music. There is nothing else like them, no matter how much people tried to copy them.
I wish I could have been there. But it was 12 years before I was born 😢
You're a gem for not putting ads in this. 80 minutes of pure gold ;)
I would've turned 2 at this show. Can you imagine that? Crowd-surfing baby being flung around and shit. It would have been awesome.
"flung around" 😂
I was born in 2006 but my dad introduced me to this band and I LOVE THEM!
im also pretty young (im 16), i can say for certain that i was born in the RIGHT generation. we get to hear all the Pixies' music at the push of a button! we were born at the right time to hear these absolutely incredible bands.
I was born in 1984 and my dad introduced me to this band too

me too, and I love them too
I was horn in 1970...which meant I was able to watch this gig. Which I did. The atmosphere inside and outside the Academy was the most electric thing I've ever experienced. I have tried to educate my kids. 1 out of the 3 loves The Pixies. She didn't believe I was actually there, but I still have my ticket tucked inside the CD case of Doolittle. 😀
The Pixies are a Band that hit a certain part in the Mind, that causes involuntary reactions. It's really unexplainable. The chills, The Zone etc... & I think it's the same for Everyone who; 'gets it.'
if you like Pixies you should check out Lonely Gimmick - All Along the Watchtower, it gives me Pixies vibes and it's a great new song
I get it….
Very well said. I remember "getting" the Pixies and was hooked for life. You really do have to "get" them and I feel sorry for people who haven't. I still rediscover old songs that I'd kinda forgotten about to this day and they never get old. Never got bored of them and I've been a fan since I first heard them at 15 years old, 15 years ago.

Well isn’t this the coolest thing ever. What a performance. Ballsy to open with the screamiest song of the bunch. Edit: dear holy god Tame was amazing.
Kim's mic stand is too tall so she was standing on her toes to sing Bone Machine. How _fucking adorable_ is that?!
They use a lot of what I like to call, “organized chaos.” It appears to be a mess of sounds on the surface. But if you’re truly listening, you find every note, every scream, every whirlwind of notes is actually highly coordinated and deliberate.
Reminiscent of "Trout Mask Replica" by Captain Beefheart.
This show was aired in Japan 1991 as their first "LIVE" show, it was very shocking and here I feel same, great band!!
Now I understand why Kim says thanks in Japanese at the end of some songs.

My cousin, God bless him, played me Frank's first solo album in 1995 and it blew my mind. It's taken me 25 years to hear everything he's done. I may be crazy but to me he's up there with Dylan, Keith Jarrett, Bowie, and only a few others. Feel really blessed every time I hear The Pixies, his solo stuff, and The Catholics.
There is something in the Frank Charles Michael Black Kittridge Francis Thompson IV discography to speak to every mood.
You’re not crazy
Bowie complimented pixies!
Ha 😂. I remember the first time I heard the B-52's. Audience participation took on another definition. Been dancing ever since.
Such a shame the US was still hung up on bullshit hair bands at the time. The Pixies had to go to Europe to draw a crowd that appreciated them. Then Nirvana exploded but the Pixies were about done. Never got the respect they deserved in their home country.
yikes
this is the dumbest fucking shit I've ever read lol
WTF?
Plenty of us were into the Pixies in 1991... well, much earlier than 1991 tbh... I was first into them in the late 80's, back when they were still just an off-shoot of the punk scene.. but yeah, they're not the first U.S. band that blew up more overseas than here at home... because the way radio made bands back then in the US, good bands flew under the radar because the large record labels controlled radio... which is why we had the underground, "alternative" scene... we ignored the corporate music, and had our own bands promoted by Flipside, Maximum Rock'n Roll, and smaller zines, etc...
I think if two things kept them from reaching mainstream popularity 1) Their image (particularly Charles as he just kept getting bigger and bigger with each year) wasn't viewed as marketable. 2) Charles not letting Kim do more songwriting and co-writing on Pixies albums. That platinum album Kim Deal help the Breeders get with her writing could've been something she would've helped the Pixies get.
People that talk a lot of crap about Kim being replaceable and she was "just the bassist" are pretty much viewing her with Charles' colored glasses. Her contributions downplayed too often, forgetting that on stage Kim was the one Pixie with stage presence (Charles had no stage presence until he unleashed his voice such as in this concert), she was the one that interacted with the audiences on stage and Gigantic was and still is a Pixies staple, which is a song she wrote and is as synonymous with Pixies music as Where is My Mind is to casual listeners. And as far as the Pixies sound? Well, Charles himself said it during their show at The Paradise in Boston, "those sweet Charles and Kim harmonies."
If Charles had just not been so insecure and such a control freak, between his unique, quirky, charming and frantic Rock tunes and Kim's more ear friendly, poppy melodies and voice Pixies could've very well been as close to a Beatles as possible in the Alternative Rock scene, well before Nirvana (undeservedly, imo and I love Nirvana) was branded as such.
Frank Black is an outstanding composer.
They were so far ahead of their time, it still feels like modern rock!!!

The greatest performance of my favorite song ever. They played it slower, which is already rare, but they perfectly nailed the atmosphere too. Frank sounded so exhausted and heartfelt here
Also that performance of Tame is absolutely insane holy shit
Great to hear so many Bossanova songs. My personal fav Pixies album, though they are all great.
It's so awesome to see them perform "the happening" that is one of my favorite B-side songs of the pixies
thnx so much Charly
Quite possibly the most influential band of all time in many sublime ways!!!
Swear that if Francis Black didn't look like the most average human ever then the Pixies would have been 20x as big.
EmegopsForever yeah, hadn't thought of it before, but I'm sure you're right...
That is one thing that made them even better.
Like Super Size?
I particularly think that’s why they never got to be mainstream or very popular, they didn’t look like the typical “rock and roll stars” (whatever that means), but instead looked like regular average people. But that’s why I like them even more... no one can say they only got to be such a great band because of their looks or any other superficial attribute. They are great because of their awesome sound. Still one of my favorites bands.
Well if you like a band primarily because you find them sexually attractive or you want them to correspond to a certain fashion criteria you might enjoy music the wrong way. I'd say the superficial people can stay away from the Pixies, they don't deserve this greatness anyway. There is a level of integrity that I really like with the Pixies and I'm glad they never ran away from being natural.
thnx 4 posting this awesome live show..
