This is the first version that opens the album, the acoustic version, titled My, My, Hey, Hey (Out of the Blue). The album ends with an incredibly raw, raucous electric version titled Hey, Hey, My, My (Into the Black). Much different vibe, as you can imagine - especially on the follow-up tour album, "Live Rust."
Great stuff!
Love both versions for different reasons. There's a reason why he's considered the Godfather of Grundge.
Yes, they'll eventually want to react to Hey Hey, My, My too. There are so many great Neil Young songs, you have a fun journey ahead and I look forward to seeing you enjoy them.
I 100% agree man they should react to the later one as well because it's a perfect bookend to it. And I've seen him do both of those live in the same concert back in the late 70s and it just blew me away.
Yes def react to the other electric one too!
DIFFERENT LYRICS THO
"It's better to burn out, than to fade away." Yeah, we sure lost a lot of our heros. Glad Neil is still with us, what, 60 years now? AMAZING!
Kurt Cobain quoted that line in his suicide note.
Def Leppard opened the song “Rock of Ages” with that line.
Yup, it you go back to the Buffalo Springfield in the mid-1960s. Neil turned 77 this past November and hopefully he will be around for some time to come.
So did the Kurgan in Highlander.
He's a leftist simpleton.
There is both “Hey Hey, My My” and “My My, Hey Hey”, and you’ve really got to hear both to appreciate what Neil can do with a song!
Yeah one acoustic and one electric both are 👍
Yes, you must hear the other one. It is a similar (same) tune, but is played as a hard, punk rock tune.
Hey hey my my is a rocking electric song much the opposite
No you dont
This 👆
In Kurt Cobain's suicide note, Cobain used a portion of the lyrics from this song - “It's better to burn out than to fade away”. Young has said that finding out that Cobain had used this lyric in his suicide note scarred him and messed with his mind for a long time. He was saddened that he felt that Cobain had misunderstood what Young had meant by that particular lyric
He shouldn't feel bad. No one can predict what an addict will do. But I get it.
And Def Leppard opened a song with that quote as well.
Young lost Bruce Berry Neil's roadie and good friend as well as Danny Whitten his twin flame rhythm guitarist who died a short time apart in 1973. I think Young would be particularly sensitive to Cobain's death but I think that note hit harder because of Young's experience with losing people close to him. These deaths and his breakup with Carrie Snodgrass lead Young to create 4 albums that concentrate on these tragedies in his life. It's known as the ditch trilogy of albums but Zuma is a part of that as well.
I can remember Courtney love reading the note…. When she read this part,,, oh my it was a heartbreaking moment 😢
Neil's 1994 album, "Sleeps With Angels," was in part about Cobain ... and it rivals "Tonight's the Night" as Neil's best LP.
It's more than just music when that harmonica hits.
It's magic.
Neil Young is simply one of the greatest song writers ever... He's created his own path throughout his career and never bowed to corporate pressure. A true original.
A few songs you'd love: "POCAHONTAS" (one of the most beautiful, haunting songs ever) and "LIKE A HURRICANE," and "I AM A CHILD"... Brilliant all.
Good ones!
Definitely one of the best ever. However he did change greatly over the years and to me doesn't seem to be about free speech anymore. Maybe it's just part of the leftist cult but you don't try to cancel someone if you don't agree with them. We are supposed to be better than that.
'This notes for you' is the best non-sellout song of all time imo.
I may have shared this story before, so apologies if I'm repeating myself. My high school sweetheart and I were together in 1972, but after the break-up and our graduations, we went to separate colleges and I moved out of state, so we lost touch with each other. We both played guitar at the time, and Neil Young brought us together. We both loved his music, and it was about the time his Harvest album came out. The old flame would come over and we would always jam to Neil Young. Fast- forward to 2010, I got a FB message from him, after 36 years, and the rest is history. We got married in 2011! Probably sounds corny, but not to us! All this being said, Neil Young will ALWAYS be special to us! Thanks for this great reaction and stirring up the nostalgia of reminiscing about our love story. ✌💙✌
Doesn't sound corny at all man. I've been digging Neil since way back then. I think it's cool and sweet. Dig up ya'll and congratulations. 👍👍🤟🤟
Not corny - it's beautiful. Congrats!
Thanks for the kinds words! It was the best decision I ever made! ✌💙✌
@@faithnyou1732 you're extremely welcome.
Very nice story!
I recommend his “Like a Hurricane.” Show cases his electric guitar work which is incredible. He is one of the best.
OH - I saw him on Don Kirchner's Rock Concert (possibly something on his nose) .. and Like A Hurricane became much favourite song.
Even asking for the a long time!
Or Down By The River but yeah tired of the same acoustic crap on these channels
Absolutely incredible song, voice, guitar.
when Neil and Crazy horse decided to play loud, they were louder than anybody.
You have to watch Neil light up the stage on Saturday Night Live Rocking in the Free World. He's masterful. HIs music pierces through to the core.
Yup Don't know why everyone request the acoustic crap when his best stuff is electric
He did a wonderful song that's short but very powerful called The Needle and the Damage done....💖
This is My, My, Hey, Hey, the acoustic version. "Hey, Hey, My, My" is the electric version, a massive rocker! Same lyrics. Both masterpieces.
More Neil Young----

Songwriter extraordinaire🎵🎶🎵🎶🎵
and so many others to list😎😍🎸🎸🎸😎😍
"Computer Cowboy"
"Pocahontas"
"We R in Control"
"Harvest Moon"
Rockin' in the USA or Rockin' in the Free World?
It's interesting that you mentioned Lynyrd Skynyrd. Neil Young and Lynyrd Skynyrd were involved in a years long feud. Lynyrd Skynyrd took issue with Young's criticism of the South starting with Young's song "Southern Man" and it was amplified when Young released his song "Alabama." As a result it inspired Lynyrd Skynyrd to respond with their hit song "Sweet Home Alabama." There's a reprise to this song "Into The Black" where they use electric guitars instead of acoustic and rock it up a bit.
I came here to say this, but you beat me to it.
It wasn't a feud, it was tongue in cheek on Ronnie's part...they loved Neil's music, just felt a bit insulted and blamed for actions of other southerners...Ronnie is wearing a Neil Young T-shirt on live performances here on CZcams, notably Freebird, and he is wearing that shirt on the last album cover photo before the plane crash; And Neil was a fan of Skynyrd, he wrote this song for them to record, but then the plane crash happened czcams.com/video/o3td3Q5Jr6A/video.html
@@blindriv3r Yep - they all smoked weed from the same stash.
The feud is overblown. They liked each other’s work. In fact, Neil Young sent Powderfinger to Ronnie Van Zant for Skynyrd to record. Then the place crash happened and Young eventually recorded it with Crazy Horse on Rust Never Sleeps.
RIP Gary.
The first song I heard written and sung by Neil Young was when he was a member of Buffalo Springfield in about 1967. "Mr. Soul" is still one of my favorite songs, ever. Give it a listen sometime.
His solo 'Unplugged' version is the best!
That was the first album I ever bought. I was 16. Lived in So Cal.
Oh, hello Mr Soul, I stopped by to pick up a reason.
Best song ever written about Rock N' Roll. One of the best songwriters and guitarists there is. Listen to the electric version of this song next Hey Hey My My (Into The Black). This version is live, Neil is great live or studio.
Such a great song!!
“Heart of Gold” is one of my all time favorite songs by Neil Young! This one was Ok but like you said his vocals were rememberable!
@@sheilameyers152
Not my favorite either, but it’s Neil Young! LoL
OMG they only know about acoustic Neil...they haven't seen the grandfather of Grunge! "Neil Young & Crazy Horse - Hey Hey, My My ( Into the Black ) live 1991 HD" is the perfect introduction of that side of Neil and to see how hard his fans rock out!
This is a double song. There's My My Hey Hey (Out of the Blue) and Hey Hey My My (Into the Black). One acoustic, one electric.
Another Canadian legend along with Bryan Adams, Burton, Rush, Alanis, Shania, and Celine among others
Not forgetting Joni Mitchell!
Gordon Lightfoot!
Nope way better than those Losers
and, especially, Klaatu.
Once you 'get' Neil Young, you're hooked for life. He touches your soul.
Loving the reaction, and I just want to say, if you really want a Neil Young storytelling masterpiece with a massive emotional punch: Powderfinger, set in the Civil War era.
Most definitely 🔥
Great song! Thanks for the Civil War reference. Now it has really sunk in 💔💔💔💔
@@Hippychic723 Oh yeah, go back and check it out with that in mind. To me it just makes it so poignant. And then of course being Neil Young and being so poetic, in the final verse It completely transcends whatever setting it could ever be put in and makes a comment about how tragic it is when young people die, regardless of whether it was a justified situation or not. Either way it's just tragic. And it's a fantastic song musically on top of it. Really pulls on the emotions.
"Cover me with the thought that pulled the trigger" ... "Just think of me as someone you never figured" ....
Powderfinger is an amazing song. Great, tragic song. The last verse always knocks me out.
“Just think of me as one you'd never figured
Would fade away so young
With so much left undone
Remember me to my love
I know I'll miss her”
and Cortez the Killer
He is a genius - his influence was especially strong in the 90s indie rock scene.
Eddie Veder would agree with that statement
It's funny that you make a reference to Lynyrd Skynyrd. Their biggest song includes the line, "Well I hope Neil Young will remember, a Southern Man don't need him around any how." That was in reference to his earlier song "Southern Man." They were fans of each others songs, and Young actually played "Sweet Home Alabama" a couple of times in his live sets.
Long May you run I played it for my puppy who past. Love this song !!!!!!
Neil Young is the "Godfather of Grunge"!! I saw the Rust Never Sleeps tour on Oct. 23, 1978 at the LA Forum!! It was AMAZING!!! 🥰
Sweet!
Jay & Amber, you'll love his "Cinnamon Girl", My My, Hey Hey (Out of the Blue)" and "Only Love Can Break Your Heart"!!
Cinnamon Girl was my fave back in the day. What a groove!
@@knarf_on_a_bike Oh man I love that song ✌️
Hey Hey, My My (Into the Black) is this song's crunchy, distorted cousin. Closes the same album that this one opens.
And I would also suggest Sugar Mountain .it was me and my husbands favorite song
‘Powderfinger’, Sedan Delivery’ and ‘Crime in the City.’
Live forever Neil Young, the future needs you!!
This is my my hey hey,you really have to listen to both hey hey my my too the dark distorted electric version, both perfectly show both sides of Neil.
The sound of them new strings on his acoustic guitar are just awesome. There is so much more of Neil Young you need to explore.
good call they do sound not quite broken in
"Cinnamon Girl" is one you need to hear...also "Sugar Mountain".
Great song, thNk u guys, hope your all doing great and having great day. Love Neil young music 🎶 classic ✌️
"The King is gone but he's not forgotten". This song came out right after Elvis died and The Sex Pistols were at their most popular.
Neil defended the punks back in the 70's
Please consider Neil's "Love is A Rose" Guaranteed.
Jay & Amber, try "Cinnamon Girl" by Neil Young
Love Neil, have seen him a dozen times...
I think that's pretty talented to play a guitar and harmonica at the same time.
Neil's distinctive guitar and harmonica and his ability to write such a beautiful story has always made him a favorite of mine
All I can say is that neil was ahead of his time 👍
"...my my, hey hey, rock and roll is here to stay...♫ You two are a testimony to this. Good job, keep rockin'
My favourite song by him
Beautiful. I used to sing this to my kids at bedtime. There's a more rocking version "My My Hey Hey", one of the first songs I learned to play. I love everything he's ever done. His lyrics and songwriting are pure genius. Listen to "After the Gold Rush" and the entire "Live Rust" album.
This acoustic version is called My, My, Hey Hey (Out of the Blue).
The electric version is Hey, Hey, My, My (Into the Black).
The latter version omits the infamous lyrics "it's better to burn out than to fade away", along with several other lyric changes.
Neil Young's songs, his singing style & personality always made me think of the essential hippy. Just plain groovy & most of his catalog seems laid back/easy going. Thnx y'all .. peace & blessings ✌🏼😊❣️
Oh oh, I think you meant Young? Peace!
@@awoken1445 LOL .. I DID!! Oopsie . Thnx I'll correct that.
@@ramonaalvarez7559 Although Diamond is also good! Just different!
@@awoken1445 True .. 😊 I'm terrible with names. It's a wonder I got Neil right. I was tryna say Peter Frampton years ago .. and it came out Peter Floyd .. lol. I was thinking Pink Floyd & Peter Frampton at the same time, both P F .. 🙄 We had a good laugh with that one. I worked at a very large place. Introduced to boocoos of folks daily .. I think it ruined me with names. Weird thing is ... The 1st letter is usually correct but Lord only knows what's gonna follow 😉😁
Love him. So glad he’s still here
One of my favourites by Neil. Dont know if you've done this one yet. Check out-- Downtown by him 🤟🤟👍👍
Neil's music is so interesting. Always loved this one. His song from the movie Philadelphia is heartbreaking, such a prolific songwriter.
PLEASE PLEASE react to “Down By The River” and or “Cinnamon Girl” you’ve GOT to hear how HARD Neil Young can be; he’s got many sides ❤
A sublime song
Transports me back to a special time
It took me a long time to appreciate Neil Young, which as a Canadian is tantamount to treason, but he is one of the greatest song writers ever. I’d still argue his voice is an acquired taste, but as I said, one I now appreciate. I’d give another vote to Like a Hurricane and would also recommend The Needle and the Damage Done.
Yeah, some have a problem with Geddy Lee's unique voice as well. I love and appreciate both Neil and Geddy now too.
Two of my favorite songs.. hey hey my my, and my my hey hey... Great reaction. Thank you.
There's a vulnerable everyman quality to his voice that brings that much more authenticity and emotion to the songs. He is a much underrated songwriter and composer of a great melodies indeed.
"Like a Hurricane" by Neil Young
Soo many great Neil Young tunes!
Like "After the Gold Rush"!
"The Needle And The Damage Done" ,"Down by the river" , "cowgirl in the sand", Cinnamon girl, "Southern Man", "Ohio", and "Sugar Mountain" are all great songs also
Id recommend "Helpless" by Neil Young. One of his saddest and everyone has their own interpretation of the lyrics.
For future reactions, you should listen to "Down by the River", "Ohio", and "The Needle and the Damage Done".
Oh yeah Ladies and Gents. It may take a while to resonate with his sound, but when you do, he is a Great
It was just him on this song, nobody else played on it. Amazing.
Great album after so many years! Of great albums! Neil has a way of telling a story! When you see him on the stage with just a guitar and harmonica is unreal!
If you like this, you'll like "The Needle and the Damage Done". You can even find a good live version. Brilliant lyrics about heroin taking away so many friends and so many good musicians folks will now never be able to hear. Neil said, "I am not a preacher, but drugs killed a lot of great men."
You two are a perfect match. God bless u
i saw this concert in Toronto...was, is, will always be with me...ty Neil
Y'all have got to check out his "ballad", "Cortez the Killer".
What a talent.
I used to do this song because it's one you do by yourself. I could never quite nail the harmonica but the beauty of the internet has allowed me to watch a ton of live performances of this song, and Neil doesn't nail it either.....in any other performance. 😁this is literally the best performance of the song he ever did. The second harmonica solo in this song is the best one ever did in a song. I spent years trying to get it right. Rarely getting the full power of this recording. It did my heart good to see Neil rarely matched it. It's really special.
The hippy days where great Niel Young had a whine in his voice that was distinctive to him he was a festival king, stoned and chilling out, the greatest memory's for me were back in the good days, now the festival scene is pop? good reaction to a great man
This song will never burn out or fade away 🔥🔥🔥
If you have not encountered The Sex Pistols, Johnny Rotten was their snarling vocalist. The King, Elvis P' died in 1977 -and The Sex Pistols, and Punk were the new music, that mocked the past,
Neil does some stomping Hard Rock versions of this too!!!!
"It's better to burn out, than to fade away" was written by Kurt Cobain's suicide note, in 1994...Neil was seen as the Grandfather to some of the "Grunge Music" bands. Neil, had trouble playing this song for a while after.
Johnny Rotten! Rotten Johnny!
@@John_Locke_108 John Lydon, actually 🤔
When Neil decides he's in the mood to stomp, few stomp harder or louder
I doubt he will ever be Sir John Lyon, unless King Charles or King William forgive him for "God Save the Queen, her facshist regime..."
Neil has lived in the U.S. for so many decades some people might not realize he's Canadian, one of my country's greatest songwriters.
Thrasher is a great song about moving from Manitbo/Sasc roots to LA
My teenage hero that became the King of Grunge.
The song was influenced by the punk rock zeitgeist of the late 1970s, in particular by Young's collaborations with the American art punk band Devo, and what he viewed as his own growing irrelevance. Great song.
The next time you cut and paste something from Wiki you should really give credit to the source instead of pretending they were your own thoughts and words.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hey_Hey,_My_My_(Into_the_Black)
When you guys did “Rockin in the Free World” you accidentally played some random guy doing his Neil Young impersonation. The song may not be among Neil’s top ten, but it is an honest reaction to the crack epidemic of the 80’s, and a different side of Neil that you might not want to miss. Please keep going down the rabbit hole with this artist. You’ll be rewarded with so much quality music. Btw, this whole album is a masterpiece.
They should react to Neil Young, performing Keep on Rocking in free world, with Pearl Jam at the 93 video music awards.
Yeah some stupid requester got the awful edition!!!! WHEN will we hear the ELECTRIC STUFF
Please do "Rockin in the Free World" with Neil Young.
Neil Young 🇨🇦 is beloved in his home country! His writing is the best & messages he gives are positive & purposeful, he has never been afraid to speak out through his songs. ‘Ohio’ is a song that propelled people into action, I remember protesting because of the National Guard of Ohio shooting young students at a protest. In Canada we protested our RCMP killing indigenous people who stood up to protect their lands from destruction by big companies destroying forests, putting pipelines on indigenous lands etc …. ‘Ohio’ always comes to mind when I see protests around the world & in my own country 🇨🇦☮️. Neil tells it like it is.
Neil young is one of the most amazing musicians of all time.
There's two versions of this song, both great. The other one is called "Hey, Hey, My, My". You need to do that one too!
Cowgirl in the sand is his best. Long song for a reaction though.
There are two different songs "My My Hey Hey (Out of the Blue)" which was acoustic, and "Hey Hey My My (Into The Black)" which was electric.
The summer of '79 all wrapped up in this song!
So good - such a poet.
Alright my babies..... I believe this song has anthem like qualities to it. They don't make musicians like this anymore. Good quality stuff right here ‼️💯☺️👍🏼
Cinnamon Girl and Southern Man are two great Neil Young solo rockers. Also check out his masterpiece Down By The River as well as Like A Hurricane, Powderfinger, The Needle and the Damage Done, After the Gold Rush and Only Love Can Break Your Heart.
I agree they need to do the "into black version" ..."Powderfinger" is another Neil Young must listen.
I think you already did “Harvest Moon”. Always gets me in the feels!
Now that you've done Hey Hey My My, you really need to do My My Hey Hey , live 1991 version. These are two different versions of the same song The album , Rust Never Sleeps included both versions
He is just damn legendary
My favorite line is "There's more to the picture, than meets the eye". Definitely there is a lot of great songs to listen, like "Cinnamon Girl", "Cortez, The Killer", "Down By The River", "The Needle and The Damage Done", "Like A Hurricane", "Lone May You Run", "I'm The Ocean"(with Pearl Jam), "Powderfinger", "Thrasher", "On The Beach", "Helpless", "After The Goldrush", "Ohio", "Sugar Mountain", "Expecting To Fly", "From Hank To Hendrix", "Out On The Weekend", "Don't Let It Bring You Down", really the list is almost endless.
I'd love for you to react to a whole other side of Neil Young and Crazy Horse. Check out "Like A Hurricane", the live version from 1986.
possibly Neil and Crazy Horse at their loudest, the In a Rusted Out Garage Tour
Southern man is a great song also
I was fortunate enough to be at Neil Young’s Rust Never Sleeps concert at the forum in Los Angeles. I believe it was 1979. Love you guys keep up the great work!!
Saw him at an all-acoustic concert and it was one of the BEST concerts I've ever been to.
@Official_rob_squad_reaction LMAO ya right I'll do that right away 🙄
Love Neil Young. Pure expression. Pure emotion. Also, (despite him being unconventional and a bit sloppy at times) one of my favorite guitar players. Every note means something.
One of my favorite concerts was a Neil Young concert I saw. He walked out on a completely empty stage, totally empty, not an instrument, an amp, nothing, just Neil in his jeans and flannel shirt. He played a couple on guitar, added a harmonica for a couple, the rolled out a piano and pianist and every couple songs added an instrument. It was the cleanest, most stripped down sound, he played and told stories, and it was amazing.
I like that variety in a concert. I saw Donovan on his "Mellow Yellow" tour in 1967. He did his first set with a jazz combo and sang his jazzier songs like "Sunny Goodge Street". Second set he brought out a rock band and did songs like "Season of the Witch". Third set he came on stage with a string quartet and harpsichord and sang his songs that sounded like they were written centuries ago, like "Guinivere". Last set he played solo and did his folk stuff like "Catch the Wind".
And the kicker was his opening act. A 16 year old girl named "Janis Ian" singing her new song "Society's Child".
It was definitely among the top concerts I've ever seen.
Me too. Feb 1983 in NYC, just him by himself, it was one of the best shows ever, well the weed helped.
Stop with the wimpy acoustic!!! He s always better with the Electric!!!! Too many WIMPPY REQUESTERS
I love Neil Young's music. Give "Cinnamon Girl" A listen.
Deep. He is one of the best.
The entire first side of this album is unbelievable. Thrashers, Sail Away, Gonna Ride My Llama. A highly underrated album.
When performing live, Neil always opens with an acoustic set then moves into an electric set. This song is the acoustic version of a song that, in its electric iteration, is called “My my, hey hey” (rock and roll is here to stay). In my opinion, you haven’t really heard Neil Young until you experience an electric set. The album you had, “Rust Never Sleeps” is the soundtrack to a movie of the same name where you can experience what I just described
Actually this is My My Hey Hey(Out of the Blue), the electric version is Hey Hey My My(Into the Black)
neils so emotive,brilliant
So much soul in that harmonica.
Neil Young is a One of A Kind artist. His song writing is up there with the greats. Please check out the early video of Neil playing The Loner/Cinnamon Girl in a small intimate venue. It is a scorching performance
☮️❤️
Funny you say it gives you Lynryd Skynryd vibes and has a southern sound. Neil has a history of anti-Southern sentiment. See "Southern Man" then Lynryd Skynrd's rebuttal in "Sweet Home Alabama"
One of the greatest ever
Love Neil young
