The rabbit hole with Neil Young is mega deep and well worth the trip. The man is a living legend.
so many bands and so much great music
“Doesn’t mean that much to me to mean that much to you” one of the best lines in music.
i'm a fellow canadian and contemporary of neil young. i commented a few minutes ago and said the same thing. that lyric is phenomenal....also like a coin that won't get tossed rolling back to you. got his writing ability from his father.....
You ever see these lyrics ?
Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day
Fritter and waste the hours in an offhand way
Kicking around on a piece of ground in your hometown
Waiting for someone or something to show you the way
Tired of lying in the sunshine, staying home to watch the rain
You are young and life is long, and there is time to kill today
And then one day you find ten years have got behind you
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun
And you run, and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking
Racing around to come up behind you again
The sun is the same in a relative way but you're older
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death
Every year is getting shorter, never seem to find the time
Plans that either come to naught or half a page of scribbled lines
Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way
The time is gone, the song is over, thought I'd something more to say
This song is nearly 50 years ago. Neil is still going.
I can't tell you how much it breaks my heart when I hear young people say that they don't know who Neil Young is. He is the real deal.
Let the children listen and learn- his stature is growing in the reactor community.
@@TheDivayenta I love the people , ok lets see this Bob Dylan ones as well, there jaws drop :) And then they have so so much to explore , "A man needs a maid" in Barking town hall , Famous for its acoustics, for example
Well when the garbage crap like this is played I can see why!!! He made a name with h I s Rock not the awful elementary grade acoustic crap
Straight up!.. My 1st music. He's Canadian, and an Icon... You've heard of Crosby Still Nash and Young?... ❤️🙏🇨🇦
Let it not break your heart that they may hear him now.
ProTip guy: this guy is LEGENDARY. dig deep on him. Heart of Gold next
I agree, please do HEART OF GOLD next.
Ditto this advice
we are all in agreement. May I also just touch on 'Needle and the damage done'. About the Heroin and the...damage done. Which he saw firsthand. you will feel it.
Harvest Moon
@@ErikDaniel7777 Beautiful, honest and short. That song is the whole package beginning to end.
I usually prefer the studio versions over live, but this performance is amazing.
Same here but there are exceptions like the Allman Brothers live J Geils band, SRV
It’s perfection
I'd say that 1 out of 50 songs has a better live performance vs. the studio. This is one of those songs.
This entire concert “Live at Massey Hall” is unbelievable. The acoustics in that place must be incredible.
benntura I'd use the adjective 'haunting' to describe it. Those chords on the acoustic guitar always mesmerize me in a way - take me to another place.
Neil Young was always so real, so authentic. And his songwriting showed how deeply he looked at life's simple experiences. He is a storyteller and a deep thinker. And that *u.n.i.q.u.e* voice.
Keep on rocking in the free world
There's a studio version with a bunch of other instruments, but for me this live solo version is the most powerful. His clear-as-a-bell voice really comes through.
anything off the album Harvest is pure gold !!!
I think I played this non stop in my high school years.
Great album!
I'm willing to bet you'd likely appreciate him with Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young on their "TEACH YOUR CHILDREN"
They definitely need to do Teach Your Children!
Definitely
Though Neil isn't actually on any of the songs he didn't write or cowrite on Deja-Vu. All great songs.
Yes! This
Great song, but it’s a Graham Nash song, not a Neil Young song.
Harvest Moon, Cinnamon Girl, Comes A Time, Powder Finger, Long May You Run and so many more. He is a treasured artist to me since I was a teen 🙏🏻❤️🙂
Sometimes I get more emotional when I see your faces naturally reacting to songs. Just now I got tears in my eyes and I've been listening to this song for over 40 yrs. But watching you react makes it seem new. Thank you.
I'm 83, and I'm all choked up with tears in my eyes.
A great Canadian talent and a true "living legend".
Once again, thank you Canada for the talent you have given the world..... and the beer.
@@armadillotoe Ahh! Especially the beer eh?
Please
@@armadillotoe thank you Canada for Geddy Alex and Neil better known as Rush
@@loyevangelists Even more Canadian legends! I thank you on their behalf (for the recognition).
Neil Young is 75 years old now. This performance makes. Me. Weep. I mean, the depth of the message, seeing him young like this and knowing that he appreciated the old man for his whole life when he was just a young man of 24, and knowing that he himself is an “old man” now… oh, it just gets me right in the heart 💜.
So now he's Neil Old? LOL
@@helpendguardianabuse8878 He’s one of the most prolific song writers and talented vocalists of his generation. He will never die because his music will live on and he will be remembered. Neil YOUNG forever.
Absolutely ❤️
Fun Fact: Neil Young is also the godfather of the Grunge movement. From Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young to Grunge of the early 90's, he's lived a long and interesting life.
Yep....getting old is a hell of a thing.
Truth …”just an artist with their voice and guitar, …”
This is called talent.
So few ‘artists’ of today can hold a crowd with their talent alone … instead they rely on costume, visual/sound effects, dance, support musicians to carry them.
There was so much talent 50 years ago, but sadly it is very rare these days.
The whole damn album is good. Harvest
Neil is 75 years old and still rocks.....what a supreme talent he is.
His Southern Man is an iconic song. It's "controversial" and a funny history to the song, being critical about Southerners. Then Lynyrd Skynyrd wrote Sweet Home Alabama giving Neil crap for being critical about the South. I'm a Southerner and don't care one way or another but Neil did apologize years later saying it was stupid what he was saying about the SOUTHERN MAN. They actually respect each other.
I think Lynyrd Skynyrd were reponding to Neil's song, Alabama, as much as to his song Southern Man
Tom H. Always felt like " Southern Man" was a song about a specific time back during slavery in the south and the kkk trying to use the bible to justify their actions. I don't think he was condemning the south at the present time of the songs release. Also I don't think he believes it's a stupid song.
It was a feud that was blown way of proportion. They had the utmost mutual respect for one another. In Lynyrd Skynyrd's iconic live version of 'Free Bird' from Oakland in 1977, Ronnie is wearing a Neil Young t-shirt.
In fact, Ronnie Van Zant is wearing a Neil Young 'Tonight's the Night' t-shirt on the cover of Street Survivor under the open jacket he has on.
@@tonyfair487 it started as a feud but they became friends pretty quick and VanZant even wore Youngs T-shirts’ live.
The 70’s produced so many incredibly talented singer/songwriters. These artists also helped each other succeed without needing credit. Neil Young is still going strong.
One of the most important live performances in Rock History. Have to love those Canadian Rock stars!
I loved the look of awe on Amber’s face when Neil started singing!! 🥰🥰
Yes, it reminded me of the expression she had when she first heard Karen Carpenter sing.
@@Cosmo-Kramer YES!!!
@@laneygrigas4557 Ya know, Laney, this has got to be the first time in history that anyone has compared the voices of Neil Young and Karen Carpenter. lol
@@Cosmo-Kramer I think you’re right but they both have that same melodic tone to their voices that I think people will actually agree with such an odd and random comparison! Lol
@@laneygrigas4557 Odd, indeed. lol
I used to live 5 miles from Neil Young's ranch that he talks about in this song, my dad used to run into him time to time. Very awesome and down to earth guy. Years ago I was at the Pearl Jam concert in San Fran where Eddie Vetter got sick and had to leave. Neil Young was there and stepped in and played for 2-3 hours, he's a special human.
Wow . Such respect for Neil Young
Pearl Jam and Neil have a cool relationship.
that is cool man. I am CANADIAN
great story, and yes, special indeed.
@Gerald Dixon Cummings Canadian born and raised, dual citizen now
I"ve never thought his voice was beautiful, but it's honest. You know he's telling us who he is in his songs. Some artists are Truth Speakers, Neil Young is one.
it's beautiful in this song. changed as he got older....as it does
This genius was 26 when he did this performance in the UK BBC studios... The whole concert was superb..!
Just think this song is 50 + years old and is still great. He was a part time member of CROSSBY STILLS & NASH ( Crosby Stills Nash & Young ) . HE Still Sings Today.
And is married to Darryl Hannah.
W J Rapp Neil has always been one of my favorite artists from back in the day. We are the same age...born in 1945...do the math, we ain't younguns anymore, but we still rock!
And a fulltime member of Buffalo Springfield
The artists and musicians of that time put their soul and emotions in their craft
I am a singer/guitar player who performed this, and other songs in a duo sometime in the mid 80's in NSB, Florida at a Tex mex place. We finished a set and saw Neil Young sitting there eating, and listening, and applauding. He was in town to visit his mom who lived there and was sick. My duo partner insisted on going to Neil's table to tell him what fans we were and how much he influenced our music. I didn't want to bother him, but we did. Neil was the most kind, polite, and friendly person. He thanked us for the good music and tolerated us. His music is vast and beautiful, and he is still at it. A music legend, and really nice guy!
I saw Neil on stage SOLO at Red Rocks the summer I turned 30. That was 35 years ago. Yep. He’s amazing. One of the best nights of my life!!!!
I hope this leads to classic Neil Young songs like Harvest Moon, Down by the River, Heart of Gold, Southern Men ... plus his work with Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young - Suite: Judy Blue Eyes, Wooden Ships, Helpless, Our House...
His whole "Harvest" LP actually. Not a bad song on it.
emanon fox ALL quality music you just listed. Artists today will not likely be remembered for their body of work 50 years from now!
Harvest Moon is amazing. Linda Ronstadt on backing vocals. These songs take you to places where others just can't.
Neil is a legend! check out Heart of Gold, Hey Hey My My, The Needle and the Damage Done, Harvest Moon, Ohio, Rockin in the Free World, From Hank to Hendrix. There is a never ending list.
Has he ever put out a bad song? All those you mentioned are my favorites!!
@@kathrynadair7575 Not in my opinion. I have seem him live many times, still my favorite. One concert was only supposed to be a few hours long and he came out and played pretty much all night till 4am in the morning. I also get to see many shows because part of my job is taking care of celeb performers backstage, amongst other things.
Don't forget, Down by the river.
Was at a family reunion just today with an older cousin who--turns out--was at the same Neil concert I attended in Rapid City in '93. Booker T and the MG's were his backing band. The 'Harvest Moon' album stood out, even in a year of great great new music.
And Soundgarden opened, which also kicked ass.
This is the voice of someone young in their twenties yet his voice sound has a certain wisdom to it
Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, also Buffalo Springfield. The Song For What It's Worth.
For younger people who don't know who Neil Young is, I'm glad when they discover him. Neil Young is one of the greatest singer songwriters who came out of the 60s-70s. He also rocks with a band he calls Crazy Horse. But Neil's most famous singing companions were Crosby Stills and Nash. They sang together so much that the band became known as Crosby Stills Nash and Young.
For Neil Young songs (more like OLD MAN), I recommend Needle and the Damage Done and Heart of Gold. But Neil has a deep and rich catalog. He is still making music btw.
Sugar Mountain
His entire catalog is almost all pure genius!
Hong Fang You nailed it bro! CSN & Y is my go to group when I'm feeling nostalgic. Joanie Mitchell, too. I can get into hours of listening to both.
Don't forget he was also with Stephen Stills in Buffalo Springfield... some sweet sixties albums there.
You should see him when it's Crosby Stills Nash and sometimes Young.
Check out MR. SOUL from the Trans album
He was the only Canadian in that quarter
Sometimes Young, ha ha I like that.
1000% endorse this recommendation
Yes!
Amber is such a gentle soul. Love to see her reaction on the slow ones
His voice, the acoustic guitar and don't forget the LYRICS. So meaningful.
Neil is an icon. He plays the harmonica too, very well I might add. Xxxxx
"Doesn't mean that much to me to mean that much to you" is always SUCH a lyrical gut-punch! Hometown ennui.
They didn't catch that line. The best in the whole song.
Agreed 🦋🎶
@@daledubose3032 True, I yelled at the screen "wait here it comes" and then he paused the clip and missed it...
I have to say I don't really get it, maybe because I'm not a native speaker. He cares enough about the man to write a song for him, so what does he mean by that?
@@Samhalta I don't think the narrator is necessarily speaking *to* the titular old man for much of the song.
This song takes on a much deeper meaning the older you get.Neil is just a great example of great artist from the day.
In the same concert (BBC Four) he did a song “Out on the weekend”. Played the harmonica as well as the guitar!
Neil is one of the greatest in history.
Another Great Canadian
My son requested this song be played at his father's funeral. I've always loved the song, and it still brings tears to my eyes. Not just for the lyrics, but Neil's voice and guitar playing, and sheer talent.
Neil Young was part of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. Great musical group.
Wow... you guys are killing me... Neil Young is one of my favs... love you discovering these great master peices from back in the day... thank you for this and all your work :) x
There is beauty in simplicity. He is partially deaf which makes his talent even more amazing.
His guitar playing is heartbreakingly beautiful
One of Canada's greats......every song he sings is EPIC .... great storyteller....
No words will suffice
True he is from Canada not California.

There is no one quite like Neil Young. I have loved him from the beginning. That voice is everything!
"OHIO".A collab with Crosby, Stills, and Nash. In the late 60's, the National Guard was called in to Kent State, a college in Ohio. After some altercation, they opened fire on the protesting students killing 4 of them. Very powerful song.
And he wrote that song in 15 minutes
YES!!!!!
That was May of 1970.
niel saw the news on the tv and immediately sat down and wrote the song in 15 mins
@Donald Townsend YES!
Neil is a living legend. His catalogue is deep and he is still playing. Try a song like Tonight's The Night or Harvest and you can appreciate the song writing and talent this man has....
This was a special performance. The song is from the album Harvest, which is full of these kind of beauties. It’s a sensational and succesfull album. At this BBC performance he played a lot of that album, which wasn’t released yet. So the adienced was presented with the work of what was gonna be a big succesfull album
When I was young I took songs like this for granted. Listening now I marvel at the sheer talent Neil young has.
That they all had back then. I saw them as gods. I was right in a way.
So he’s called the ‘Godfather of Grunge’. Very significant person in the story of music. 👍🏻
I will agree with everyone else.... definitely listen to his song "Cinnamon Girl"
Neil Young is another Canadian icon. The "Harvest" album was on our playlist for years in my youth. Check out "Man Needs a Maid" if you want something heartbreaking. The studio did a weird arrangement on the album, with Tubular Bells and a full orchestra, but there's a live version - possibly from the same performance as this one - where he plays the piano. "Helpless" is a song he did with Crosby, Still and Nash, that speaks directly to my heart, having grown up in Ontario myself. It's funny to think back to Neil's acoustic days, because they didn't last long. He did a lot of great stuff with his band Crazy Horse.
This such an enchanting song. Singer/songwriters hold a specisl place in my heart.
Simon&Garfunkel, Joni Mitchell's "BLUE"(Female Friday!!!), James Taylor, Yusuf Islam aka Cat Stevens, Carly Simon and sooooo many more!🥰late 60s to mid 70s was full of these fantastic people.
Yer energy this morning is contagious! Love you guys!❤
Edit:Totally spaced the incomparable Bob Dylan!
Joni Mitchell's album, Blue, was 50 years old this last week and still one of my top ten albums of all time, essential listening
And Jim Croce, John Denver, Dan Fogelberg, Harry Chapin, Jimmy Buffet...

🇨🇦 Neil Young, legend 🇨🇦.
I saw Neil Young around about 1980....ish in Melbourne, Australia. He was on stage for over 2 hours. That was a great night
Seriously? Neil Young at 24 in London became one legendary 🇨🇦.
Godfather of grunge.
Another of his best songs is “Heart of Gold”. There’s another video of that song from this same performance that will blow you away. He’s amazing. 🥰
My youth would not have been the same without this man, thank you Neil you comforted me when all seemed lost.
One of the Greatest of All-time listen to Neil Young Harvest Moon
Please listen to “The Needle and the Damage Done.”
It’s about exactly what you think. It’s heartbreaking.
My favorite Neil Young song.
A sewing accident? It's tragic that his friend/bandmate died from his addiction to looking fly and sewing his own outfits.
That song busts me up every time.
Great reaction, this is one of my favorite songs of all time. A couple weeks ago I actually got the opening line “Old man look at my life, I’m a lot like you were” tattooed on my shoulder for my grandfather who raised me. My grandfather is still with me and i live with him and he loves it.
Amber you said it: “what else do you need with that voice?” Just the acoustic guitar. This song gives me chills because it’s so beautiful.
"Keep on Rockin in the Free World" is the polar opposite of the spectrum for this truly gifted and amazing Canadian icon!
You have to listen to The Needle & The Damage Done off the Harvest album. It is an emotional song full of truth recorded in the 70's.
"Rockin in the free world "is an anthem and shows a whole other side of Neil Young
Heart of gold !
Neil Young, Hands down, FAVORITE artist .
"After the Gold Rush" is one of my favorites. His voice is incredible.
Powderfinger
After the gold rush - classic xx
Amazing songwriter of the 70’s snd truly a voice for the Vietnam era generation. From soft acoustic solo songs to the heaviest grunge rock you’ve ever heard. Try Cowgirl in the Sand official remastered version. You will be absolutely blown away!

@@Wrangzilla Neil's first album was in the last year of the 60's - so - yeah they did not happen for Neil
Re: the Vietnam era CSNY's "Find the Cost of Freedom"
'Special' is the right word. There is nobody else like him. He can write ballads, country, all-out rock anthems - he is truly unique.
I noticed the lyric "I need someone to love me,the whole DAY through". He didn't write "...the whole NIGHT through". He likely has,or could have, some one the whole night through,if he chose-that's too easy. It's the loving in the daytime hours that truly counts, everything is exposed, unhidden in the light.
Now you understand why we (those that are older) wonder where the the "Singer-Songwriters" went. From a lot of your reaction videos I've watched, you seem to connect, to be touched, by the Singer-Song-writers of late 60s and 70s. Neil Young, Harry Chapin, Billy Joel, etc. are all from that era and all pull at the heart strings. They are the best singers, or the best songwriters, but they had a way of touching the heart and soul of those that heard them.
This is what a true artist was like in my day. A guitar, mic and the ability to write lyrics.... completely controls the room.
Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young, Dallas Taylor, and Greg Reeves, was the high water mark for everyone involved.
A true Canadian legend, still putting out music today.
🇨🇦🙏❤️ Classic..( wow-Cant believe you dont know who he is)

@@josecanavezes8196 this is my brother’s ‘campfire song’ that he plays, and is always requested, even today!
Love this performance. Heart of gold from this same concert is also amazing, he adds the harmonica to his guitar playing.
People don't even know how Neil has protected musicians and the audio quality of digital music. He has worked with, and then fought, and then again worked with most all of the major music providers AND digital audio manufacturers of today.
And don't forget to find Neil Young in Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young.
Great artist/storyteller ! Love his song "Heart of Gold" as well. It's the chillin' vibe !
I can't imagine how blown away you get hearing an extraordinarily beautiful song by a mega talent like Neil Young for the first time ever. I grew up listening to him, have seen him in concert, and still get just absolutely love his music.
My favorite line in a song ever “it doesn’t mean that much to me to mean that much to you”. Awesome
One of the most prolific song writers ever. 700 or so and counting.
This is one of my most favorite Neil Young songs ever! I remember when it first came out. Neil sings from his soul.
I've sang this song with my brother so many times it's part of my dna 😆 but Neil Young is amazing! He gained notoriety being a member of the folk band Crosby Stills Nash and Young he left the band to pursue a solo career.
Never thought of CSNY as being a folk band
Hi thanks for responding ☺ I'm curious about what you said about "not in your opinion" ?
Harvest Moon, simply beautiful!
I have been a fan of Neil Young since I was in 12th grade in 1972. Now I am an old man.
Try listening to 'The Needle and the damage done" from this same session. Amazing. PS This session was done in England, which is why he felt the need to explain what a ranch and ranch hand is. Also, during this session, he has a harmonica hanging on his neck. Neil Young is legendary. For a romantic sound for you both, I would recommend "Harvest moon". Light some candles, have a glass of wine, and get ready to slow dance. Peace.
Neil has an astonishing voice. He does soft folk like this and out and out rock and roll. Try My,my, hey, hey and Rocking in the free World
The crowds not even moving much just transfixed..A rare amazing performance straight from the depths of his soul
When you can play acoustic guitar and sang like that, you’re in a special group of artist
Oh I am so happy you found Neil ….. he’s an amazing artist his songs so special to the everyday person . His songs can find a way into a memory of yours and take you back to that time in your life . Listening to a songwriter with an acoustic guitar takes me back to my daddy . He would play and sing for his girls for hours and days when he would come home off the Truck .
Love your Daddy story xoxo
I have an interesting perspective on this. I listened to Neil Young when I was in my 20s and now with my 70th birthday in November of this year I am the old man. You are absolutely correct when you say that if an artist can be stripped down to the most basic levels and still show extraordinary talent they are the ones that will last. Neil Young is still performing.
This is song to me was the fact he could understand what the old man was seeing feeling! Make the most of your life’s, it’s flys by in the later years! And just love this man’s voice!
When you see him live in concert, you cry openly.
Neil Young - “Down By The River”
I didn’t get into Neil until later in my musical journey. Don’t make the same mistake, he’s a legend. I saw him play live in London and that sealed the deal for me, I dove deep on his catalogue after that.
