As Neil tells it, decades ago when he bought his ranch there was an old caretaker, and he wrote this song after meeting him for the first time. During that meeting the caretaker asked him. How does a young man like you come to afford a place like this? Neil’s reply was “just lucky I guess”.

Young wrote this about the caretaker of the ranch he bought in 1970. The song compares a young man's life to an old man's and shows that the old man was once like this young man.
The caretaker of the that cattle ranch? His name was Louis Avila. The ranch was the Broken Arrow Ranch, purchased for $350,000 in 1970. Reportedly, Avila was giving Young a tour of the place and asked him how a young man like him could afford a place like this. Young, aged 25, replied "Just lucky, Louie, just real lucky." Avila was quite bemused.
Linda Ronstadt and James Taylor sang backing vocals on "Old Man" and another Harvest track, ""Heart of Gold."

Neil grew up in Winnipeg. A few years back the present owners saw a man outside looking at the house. The owner went out and spoke to the man who asked whether this was the house where Neil Young grew up. The owner confirmed that it was. The owner asked if he wanted to see his room which he did. The owner took him on a tour of the house and Neil’s room where he wrote a number of his songs. After the visitor left the owner’s wife asked her husband why he had brought this one in the house when others were turned down. Her husband said that was Bob Dylan. Definitely mutual respect between the two.

Old Man was inspired by the Caretaker that came as part of a ranch Neil bought. He's the guy who lives there, cares for livestock, mends fences. It was Neil shifting from his life in Los Angeles to simpler and quieter things and the Caretaker's life sent him off on some whimsy.

This song holds special meaning to me. My last text I received from my Dad prior to him passing away, came on my birthday a few years back, wishing me a happy birthday and he would from time to time remind me that this song was his favorite. He had mentioned this in the text as well. I will always think of you, when I hear this, old man! Edit: You guys are right, there is a story behind this song, in Neil's words, but I like the fact that people can also interpret the song in their own words, first, before hearing the inspiration behind the lyrics.

There is another video of this performance where he talks about the song, why he wrote it and what it means. I can't help but feel that your patreon members should have directed you to that video. What you need to keep in mind about Neil Young is that he is first and foremost a folk singer with those folk singer sensibilities and approach to song writing and singing. The thing about folk singers is that they did not really on the vocal gymnastics that so many of you in the younger generations feel is so important. It is the message that matters. If this seems a little preachy, just know that it comes from an old folk singer, me, who started his journey in folk music in 1963. I very mush enjoy your channel. Keep enlarging your musical world.

I cut my teeth on this song in 72 when I was buying my first 8 tacts and listened to it a thousand times over the years and learning to play this on guitar so it's driven into my brainpan. Having said that it is only till now that I have really broken the code on it's meaning. The old man is a ranch hand that came along with Neil's new real estate purchase in Ontario who inspired this song about his loneliness of having all that, yet love lost...that makes him think of two...his life being all ahead of him...the old man's all behind him. A young (no pun) man's lament to an old wise weathered man, for female companionship to complete his life on that huge ranch that he had just bought. Genius songwriting and delivery by Mr. Young. Such a talent. Kudos Canada

I love this intimate performance with just Neil & his guitar (harmonica). He was only 27 when he recorded this song as a young man. Now he is an older man at 78 years old. Neil is a very talented musician, singer & songwriter. He was with the groups Buffalo Springfield & Crosby, Stills & Nash in the later 60's. Also had his own group with Crazy Horse for a few years. Neil went solo & has had so many great songs over the years. The albums "After The Gold Rush" & "Harvest" from the 70's are considered 2 of his best.

Another rabbit hole for you guys. Neil with Buffalo Springfield and his songs "Mr. Soul" and "Sugar Mountain", a song about looking back on childhood. Then "Cinnamin Girl" and 'Rockin in the Free World" and many many more. "Birds" is also great. Good job guys. Oh, and Heart of Gold is probably his biggest hit as a song on top 100. Love this guy!

Neil Young’s music is very diverse, you’ll get ballads and rockers like Cinnamon Girl, his voice fits his songs like Bob Dylan’s voice fits his songs, I would definitely suggest Cinnamon Girl, Down by the River, Heart of Gold and After the Goldrush

Like a Hurricane (Live Rust) my favorite Neil rocker. After the Gold Rush (also Live Rust) shows off his piano skills!

A man , A guitar and talent . No auto tune , no band no hype or garbage. THIS is talent and I so miss these days. Thank you for doing this one. The story he told before the song was cut out , you should find the original video and watch it :)

Neil got together with Willie Nelson and John Mellencamp to found FarmAid. I was fortunate enough to attend FarmAid VI. I saw legends walk the earth.

pretty sure this was Neil Young Live at Massey Hall in NY.....you'll notice no one applauded when he started....that's because this was the very first time he played it in public....none of the audience had ever heard it....

"Heart of gold", Harvest Moon", "The Needle and the Damage Done", "My My, Hey Hey (Out of the Blue)" (the acoustic version), "Hey Hey, My My ( Into the Black )" (the electric version) - just some of what you should be doing
Neil Young comfortably move between folk music and electric rock
This video was part of a BBC unplugged session he did in the 70s

I would encourage a listen to"After the Gold Rush" for something that doesn't get a look of play time. Give him an acoustic guitar and a stage.... all you need!

The late, great Nicolette Larson has done some backup vocals for Neil. She had a huge hit back in the disco era with a song called 'Lotta'' Love'' . Neil Young wrote that for her.
