      BigDWiz What a sad day! JLAudio is now being made in China?!?!?!?😠😔😡😠😡 This is some straight up 🐂 💩! So, JL is lying about some of their products and where they are being made! Miramar, FL my foot!!!! THIS is one of things that just makes become just IRATE!!!!!!😠😡😠😡😠 Why don't these start telling the truth about #1 where their products are actually being made #2 Just stop lying to customers and potential customers period!!!! Dan how hard is it to tell the Damn truth!!!!! That goes for legends car audio companies like Kicker and Rockford Fosgate, Precision Power,Orion, and Soundstream,and Pheonix Gold,etc etc!!! There needs to be a change within the Car Audio community and that is to demand high quality car audio equipment for decent and fair prices and be proudly bulit in U.S.A!!!! Again, what is so hard about asking for name in the U.S.A!!! 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸 I apologize for the long comment/rant but hearing about JL being made in China just disgusted me. Make Car Audio Great Again!!!!! Again, I apologize to Big D Wiz and everyone else for taking far too long but seeing that made in China sticker on the bottom of that JL amp just hurt my ♥️😭!

    Great Video Dwiz
    This is one of those amps you have to look deep down at the specs. Its a rock solid SQ amp. >110 S/N ratio, huge dampening factor, 0.03 THD, specs not seen on all the amps that do a lot more power for a lot less money. Its one of those that there is many other reasons for its price tag, power output aside. It takes high end parts and extensive engineering to achieve specs like this so your parts cost and development costs are well out of the ordinary from taking an existing board and putting your name on it. I was surpirsed that it was made in China though, but JL is so large that I am certain they have their own internal and external quality control to be sure the amps performances are always up to their par and most likely and literally throw away the ones that do not perform to specs.
    Many will look at this as its an over priced amp, (per wattage) but at the end of the day, if anyone saw what the expense would be
    to make a 5k amp for example, perform to these specs S/N AND THD specs people would be insulted by the price.
    Its one of those, in todays market people look for quantity over quality, and most of the time do not want to pay the difference for the quality. Yes there is quality amps with quantity, but you will pay the difference.
    Parts quality also plays a huge role in reliability. You can get the cheapest amp that does rated power, but its likely it'll be in and out of repair due to poor parts tolerances, and if not great, but you deal with higher odds.
    An authorized brick and mortar JL dealer will also likely just hand you a brand new amp under the circumstances of a warranty issue user error or not.
    Concluding this there is so much more than meets the eye here that many people do not know about or understand behind the scenes, and my reply is to try go give a simple understanding of some of the things you'll never think about searching for the most power for the cheapest price.
    I do not run or sell JL, I do not compete in sound quality. I just hope this opens some eyes to look at the entire picture.

      I believe Fosgates are made in China, just designed in the USA. There is a reason why the Power series costs way more than the Prime. You are right, you do get what you pay for. In electronics, better parts can add up quick. Also, many times there are more parts in better amps.

    What I like about the HD line is the consistent power across the supported ohm loads. In the Challenger, I run a VXi 800/8i for a full active setup on the mids and highs. It also provides a DSP'd sub pre out to the HD1200 that powers two 12w6v3 subs. Because the subs only come as 4 Ohm DVC, I still got the 1200w rms I needed @4 ohms. The system sounds amazing.

    I actually liked that no matter the power it was receiving, it still gave you 1200 watts minimum so it does its rated power with out needing to go crazy with power voltage just to accomplish that goal. I think the R.I.P.S Technology is pretty solid but i agree that price is steep and its more now for 2020. Prices of everything car audio related has gone up from before making it more difficult for the average consumer to own good gear.

    One of the beniffits of the RIPS power supply system is that the amp will produce approximately the same power any voltage, and any impedance. Literally the one other test you could have done, and didn't do, a voltage difference, would show that this amp technology sets it apart from everything else. Next you time do a test, do everything at a lower (real world) voltage test. Run the voltage down to 12.5 volts and watch other amps plummet in output....away from their ratings. Part of the RIPS curcuit/design is that in real world tests in a vehicle, the output stays the same whether the car is on the freeway or at a stop light. That way the customer never gets less then the rated output.no matter what their car is doing. That....is why this amp costs more. Hey, plus, they sound really good! 😁

    I always use to say, "not every watt is created equally". Not sure where I heard it, probably a magazine 25-30 years ago. A lot of factors go into sound reproduction that 90 percent of the average Joe's will overlook. Most people look at Best Deal/Price mixed with how many watts. They never even thought about to take in Signal to Noise ratio, THD, Damping factor, etc. Keep it up D, the video's are Awesome. R/Kosmo

    Definitely a solid amplifier, yes the price is a little out there but you’ve got to realize this is a really good sq amplifier with a signal to noise ratio of 110db and thd is 0.03%. Yes you can pick up a 7k for around the same price or even cheaper but signal to noise ratio will be around 85/90db and thd Will be around 0.1%. I still think the price is a little bit on the higher end though, I have seen other amplifiers with similar specs around 750/$900. if you’re looking for a ground pounder amplifier then this isn’t what you’re looking for, this is for someone who wants a sql setup. Now what I really wish JL audio would go ahead and do is combine the hd Siri’s in the vxi Siri‘s together and make a great sq amp with dsp built in, include the same control knob that comes with the vxi Siri’s and keep the Price the same or maybe lower it by $100 or so... I would be a JL audio fan boy for sure then...

      I'd have to agree. It's made in China, it's inefficient and power hungry, and it's double to quadruple the price of competing brands. Sure it looks nice, may have quality components, and it says JL on it (for what that's worth) and it may very well be a long lasting dependable amp. It could be claimed to be top tier in sound quality and may very well be true or not but this is also a class D mono amp that will most definitely power subwoofers so the difference in sound quality verses other quality amps (at half the price or less) would most likely never ever be noticed without an oscilloscope or other testing equipment. Especially if it's in the trunk of a car. I'm not mad at this amp and I'd be happy to own one but I can't justify the price for what it seems you're getting.

    $1100, made in China, dumb power/remote/ground block, not of fan of the non adjustable subsonic filter, level knob not included. You have to take a screw off to get to the amp adjustments, but you're meant to be moving the amp around so much you have to disconnect your power often? I don't get this. For $1100 you would expect a more ergonomic and smart design. Rockford would be the way to go with the T1500 even if I'm not sure it comes with a level knob.

    iPhones are made in China, and I can GUARANTEE you most people commenting are rocking an iPhone even though there are plenty of Androids phones are that are far cheaper and far superior to the iPhone. But we buy them anyway because they are nicer phones. At least thats the perception. Ive been around alot of those HD amps and they are top notch. Yes you can get more power for the dollar. But like the Mercedes analogy, your getting a proper product. Well built, well designed, an American company that stands behind it (and they do, seen it first hand). Theyre just nice amps. Buck a watt was the standard for years as the line between good and not so good. Weve been showered for years by "Cheap" big power, low price, low quality amps. So much so that amp lines like this, and Boland and Linear Power have an uphill battle selling a 150 x 2 channel amp for $1000+ plus. Stick one of those CAB amps beside the JL and see which lasts longer. And yes I know the Boland and Linear are hand built which help to justify the cost, but can you justify your 1000 iphone? Its made in China too

    Yes, JL`s place in the market is seen and considered as a higher end brand and with the status comes a higher price and this same logic applies to everything which is the reason he mentioned a Honda, Mercedes, and a BWW.
    I`m not sure how much in licensing/royalty fees JL has to pay to PowerPhysics Inc. out of Newport Beach, CA for their "exclusive" use of Single Cycle Control TM in all four of the HD amps but you better believe those fees plus a profit is reflected in the price of the HD amps.
    Just like cell phones, people complain about the cost of an iPhone compared to a top if the line Galaxy and what one gets and yet people still buy them and this also applies to JL products.

    Just did a test swapping out my Dd M2a 2400 watts at 1 ohm, gave it 1 ohm load set gains and it still was not as loud as a 1200 watt jl hd. You would have to wire down to .5 ohm to get any performance out of that DD M2a. I’ve done and it’s loud but def not as clean as the Jl. So consider this do you want new subs that you can wire to .5 ohms and use inferior sound quality amps? Or use your current subs and get true 1200 watts and be amazed?

    • @blkngwinn
      @blkngwinn Před 6 lety

      Yes I watched the video, yes I have and use these amps, and no, the wire does not work loose if it`s properly inserted into the connector and the wire is the proper size. I`m using the HD600`s and the HD750. 4 gauge NVX power wire, which is the same size as JL`s 4 gauge wire and it fits perfect in the connectors and has never come loose.

    • @caseytbss
      @caseytbss Před 6 lety +1

      CDP 4 gauge wire is not the same as 0 gauge. LOL seriously, let me know what you think of the crap once you step up to hd1200 and some real power wire. I can’t take anyone serious that uses CCA wire.

    • @blkngwinn
      @blkngwinn Před 6 lety +1

      Dude, either you`re blind, can`t read, or you`re just making up your own reality show because at no point and time did I ever say anything about using CCA wire so how can I or anyone else take "you serious" when you`re saying stuff that I never said. Plus, my comment/reply was about the actual connector plugs not being a problem on the HD amps.With that being sai, it`s obvious you have never used or know anything about NVX power wire because they don`t use or even offer CCA power wire. Yes, I know 4 gauge wire is not the same as 0 gauge wire and to also help you understand why I use 4 gauge power wire.....that`s the size that JL recommends not to mention that`s the size the fits into the connector. As I said, i`m using three other HD amps and the HD1200 is an awesome amp but I don`t need or want a 1200 watt sub amp for just two 10" TW3`s. I do use 0 gauge, again NVX, into a fused distribution block with four 4 gauge outputs.

    I like the idea of testing the amps in the car. I also started thinking if there was a way to make a Subwoofer dyno after seeing the jl in your daily driver. Most subs aren't rated past 1500 watts. Maybe the dyno test for subs would be 1hour of constant play time free air at their Fs Frequency. You could use the AM1 For live wattage. you start at Half Thier rms rating of sub for 1 hour. If it survives with no coil rub or signs of damage you incrementally up the wattage and run for another hour. Etc. Propper way would probably building an enclosure to manufacture specs but that would take even longer lol.. I think it would be cool to watch. Just time lapse each 1 hour dyno run. Pretty much each Subwoofer dyno video would be a Subwoofer blowing video. I'd love to see SSL subs, Rockville And Dual Subs Doing This "Subwoofer Dyno". Let Me Know What You Think!

    I have the HD1200 and previously ran a DD M2a(2400 w @1 ohm, 1200 w @ 2ohm) I have it powering a 2ohm load and i can say that after impedance rise that the JL outperforms the DD amp in power easy. Also the DD amp has a noticiable softness to the sound or lack of clarity when compared to the hard hitting, ultra clean sound of the JL. I was on the fence on just keeping the DD amp but after some length ear listening to both amps, the JL gives that ultra clean and hard hitting sound that i crave. If you want to run the DD m2a at .5 ohm or even 1 ohm sure you will get alot of amp for the money, which btw is still a great amp but I think the JL is better in SQ easily. So all the people hating who try to convince you that there is better amps for the money haven't done proper testing. You pay alot for premium products and thats simply put.

  • @Magluvin
    @Magluvin Před 6 lety

    Rips Tech was developed from an idea I had with modifying my Soundstream Ref705 amplifier.
    I worked at 007 Systems in Ft Lauderdale at the time. We were a Jl audio dealer and had frequent visits from personnel from JL.
    The idea was that, my amplifier, Ref 705, was rated at 50wx4 @4ohm and 100wx4 @2ohm. The sub channel was rated at 200w @4ohm, 300w@2 ohm and 400w@1ohm..
    Im a purist when it comes to car audio. I ran the Pioneer DEX-P1R head. Tuned ported kick pods(70hz) with Pioneers top of the line components of the time. With the 3 way Xovers of the P1R, I ran 2 channels of the 705 to the front tweets and 2 channels to the front mids. I ran the SPL160 15in sub in 3cu tuned to 27hz(2 4in ports about 23in long)
    Most people that had the same amp would have front and rear speakers and whatever subs they decided on. The amp had a switch to select high or low current for the sub channel.
    Well if you wanted to get 100w from each of the satellite mids n high channels, you had to use 2 sets of speakers in the front and 2 sets in the back to operate the channels at 2ohm to get that 100w per channel. Wasnt much of any 2ohm mids and tweets back then. In my case my sub was 2 4ohm coils which did not pull the full power from the sub channel.. But most people just had 1 front set and 1 rear set and didnt get all the power they were paying for...... $1200 for the REF705 at the time.
    So I modified the power supply. It was a loosely regulated supply, so the rail voltages sit at a much higher level with no input than they do at rms continuous voltage levels. The high current and high power switch only changed the number of secondary windings on the transformer for the sub channel rail voltages. So I decided to rewind the transformer to increase the mid n high rail voltages(mid 30s volts to 48v with a power input of 15.9v, provided by a Jacobs Accuvolt 1500) And also I ditched the switch and wound the sub rail secondary to 48v also. This gave me 100w x 4 and 500w rms x1. One more thing that needed to be done was to change out the zener diodes that lowered the rail voltage for the +15v and -15v regulators for the preamp circuits, as the max input of the regulator chips was like 35v, so the zener value needed to be higher for the higher rail voltages. I soldered them to the heat sink side of the board as they were too hot on the top side for the mod. Joe from the marketing department at JL had doubted my work. He had heard my system before the mods. Then he had heard it after.
    About a month later he said that they were going to make my dream amp. An amp that measured the ohm load of the speakers and then it automatically adjusted the rail voltages accordingly, to get all the power of the amp into what ever load was applied.
    But, even with similar amp power, the 705 cracked the whip on the JL amps, as they were more regulated in the power supply than the Soundstreams of the time. My sub channel could pop well over 1500w initial peaks, let alone over 200w of the same to the satellite channels, due to the loosely regulated power supply. Music is as you say, dynamic, for the most part. So the Soundstreams had a great advantage over regulated supply amps of the time, such as JL, Precision Power, etc. when it came to rated power scales.
    The mastermind of these old school amps was Wade Stewart, who came from designing concert amps. Not sure if he is still around, but last I heard he was doing repairs specifically on the amps he had designed back then.
    Mags

    • @Magluvin
      @Magluvin Před 6 lety

      Still have the Ref705 in modified condition. For more power these days, I really like the pioneer champ series amps.
      The Pioneer Champ Pro 12 sub is a serious little monster that I believe most overlook as you can get them for less than $100 on ebay or amazon. The 96db sensitivity rating is the number to pay attn to. My bud has 6 PSI 15in subs run with 3 5kw Incriminator amps. 4 batteries, 2 alternators, 3 big cap banks, blow through bandpass in a Toyota tundra. I told him to go with 6 Pioneer champ pro 12s and 3 of the GM9601 amps. Didnt believe that $1000 in equip could come close to his over $10000 in equipment. So I told him I was going to build it in my buddies Scion XB.
      A day later he asked what size enclosures and he was going to do it in his buds suv to show me it wont work.
      3cu ft each tuned to 25hz(1 4in port 16in long for each sub chamber. Total 6 ports).
      And he did. It was louder. Stock alternator, single stock battery and no caps. 2 weeks later he ripped it all out of his buds truck to send it in for repair. Ripped the roof of the suv at the seams. ;) But he still has the mentality that more money means more people lined up to sit in his truck. lol Sobeit.
      The tundra needs nearly 40kw on the 6 psi subs to do the same as the Champ Pro 12s at 5kw. Murder by numbers.
      PSI subs are 88.5db@1w vs Pio Champ Pro 12 96db@1w
      With the 3cu ft tuned at 25hz, 1 pio 12 you can hear 18hz loud and clear in the Scion. His girlfriend made him take it out and said, What, are you in high school again? So we toned it down to a 1.5 sealed and she let him keep it. lol

My current ride's system uses Skar amps, (RP75.4 and RP800.1d) and I like them every bit as much as the JL amps. (Roughly $1,000 for 800 JL watts vs. $270 for 1,100 Skar watts)

    Some would argue that Alpine, Kicker, and Rockford are overpriced as well! But they have been in business for around 40 years Alpine even more, and are still bringing out new innovative products. Some of the brands listed in the comments are very new, one is only 5 years old. While they bring solid equipment they are using designs, engineering, and built parts that the big boys brought us 20 or 30 years ago. The only difference is they are beefing them up to put out more power. So honestly we are comparing apples to Oranges, each has it's place, it just matters what's important to you. What you want, what your after. One isn't necessarily better or worse. Sorry for taking up so much space I just had to get it out there!

      I kinda reject the premise. I've commented before that JL in the UK have shot their prices up by 30-50% over the pass few years for no apparent reason. I notice this soon after the Brexit Vote that JL along with other brands ... all of a sudden, jumped in price. If there are marked improvements or new technology, then I would agree with your comments. However when one is paying for a £300 widget which used to be £200 a while ago for no apparent upgrades, then you've gotta ask yourself if that's good VFM. *I really, really ... really love JL*, but for example (subs) I bought the JL Audio CP108 enclosed sub for £219. Now you'll pay £319 and there's no difference in performance. That's one heck of a price hike!
      As for the HD amp, they used to go in the low £600's. Now they're near £800 (779). Again one has to ask; What am i getting for an extra £150-200 that I'm paying, in comparison to the price a few year ago? Answer; Nothing!!! Doesn't sound good to me. I would still buy into the JX and XD models at a push, but when the price for the HD amps has gone up by over £150 for no improvement, that's a hard pill to swallow.
      Morel, Alpine, DD, Hybrid Audio, Sound Cubed, Sundown etc, etc, all keep their prices or bring out new and improved. JL - 30-50% price hike for same product. Same for JL subs. The 8W7 is now £500 = $700 for an 8". That's a lot of 'splash' when you've got the likes of Sundown X-8 for $200.
      OK, we in the UK can't get are hands on half the gear you in the U.S. can, but more and more, I'm struggling to justify JL Audio. I still love them, but your paying twice over the price of a Rolls Royce/Bentley money, for what is an Merc E-Class brand. That just doesn't make sense.
      Its OK to be nostalgic, but not at this price!

    • @jameselam8263
      @jameselam8263 Před 6 lety

      TransmissionLineDesigns the 8W7 is $500 USD so I'm guessing it has a tariff on it as well as the other JL products and other brands going up in your country. I know that tariff's have been an issue between our countries for awhile. I made a knife for a friend in the UK and when I sent it to him he had to pay a huge charge for something that was a gift. I can understand why you would shy away from products that are high priced, I was just pointing out a few reasons they could justify being higher. The market will determine the price. If people keep buying they won't change, but if people stop buying the prices will come down to compete.

I'm glad I found a Sundown fan boy because this thing is crazy, it hits harder and smoother than the 15 ever did at less power. I know you can't really compare the two because of price points but an sq 10 hitting harder than a spl brand 15 is crazy.

Regulated power supplies, all the protection circuitry, etc. JL is living off the equity built in their brand name. Great review. looking forward to the follow up of daily driving comparison opinion. Some brands cost more as mentioned because of the name and what should be better quality products which I dont think most people would have an issue with when buying something nicer like Jl Audio, Zapco, or other brands. What is disappointing is when you do not get any better features such as an adjustable sub sonic filter, or a bandpass filter, or selectable x-over slopes. Something that makes it stand out for SQ and higher money justification. Or as also mentioned including the cheap bass knob vs selling separately for $35.
