The "house" is a brothel. The "ball and chain" is addiction. The summary of the song is "like father like son, he was a gambler and I guess so am i."
Ball and chain is literally a all and chain. The chain gangs were made up of criminals doing time in prison-like settings.
Came here to say this.
yup
Yes, House of the Rising Sun = whorehouse. Ball and chain = prison
And originally written for a woman, ball and chain is sex for money to survive. Very old, old blues song. But no one sang it like EB
One of the most powerful vocals ever. This video captured in a SINGLE TAKE, which was all they could afford. An epic performance.
A testament to the unbelievable talent and mastery. Born out of a time when you still had to be able to actually perform on stage day in day out and not just in studio.
The lead vocals look lip-synched to me. The vocal oomph you here is not delivered on his face at all.
@@jovetj Sure, this was a promo clip, clearly lip synched, that was the standard method back then
@@ifutureman Still is today.
Wow really I just luv knowing the facts are they still alive??
My late wife's all time favourite record. Eric Burdon's amazing vocal performances are legendary. He re-recorded this song in, I think, 2009 and it is even better. He's 81 and still performing.
Wow!
Wow lm so surprised to hear hes still alive and singing; his voice was amazing!
WTF! I'm gonna look for shows!
Eric Burdon was the BOMB! And his band had soul. That organ riff is epic.
The House of The Rising Sun is a gambling den/brothel. The House is the manifestation of his addiction to his vices. It's his "ball-and-chain", his true mistress. He, like his father before him, is hopelessly addicted to it's thrills, pleasures, and debauchery. The song is basically about him coming to terms with this fact.
The ball and chain is probably a literal one, he's become a bad person and is going to prison to work on a chain gang
The actual house was only around during the Civil War times. The name goes back to possible pubs in England, and French legends.
halfway house
@@kentclark6420 There's a bed and breakfast where it used to be.
The ball n chain is his gambling addiction and he calls it the house of the rising sun cuz he gambles all night til the sun comes up. ✌🏼❤️🤙🏼🤘🏼😷😎
Eric Burden is one of the most underrated british vocalist ever to come from these isles, The Animals along with The Spencer Davis Group, The Yardbirds & The Small Faces are responsible for some of the greatest british music of all time.
I too love all those British Groups. I also loved Peter and Gordon, two college looking British. Peter Asher's sister was dating Paul McCartney. I believe. I still like those songs lost in the rocks of time. And I can still hear them in my rock n roll brain. lol
Georgie Fame, kinks, The Hollies and many more.
Eric God Burden
I haven’t heard of The Spencer Davis Group in years! Gonna have to look up some videos!
Steve Winwood, one of the greatest voices to come out of the 60s
Everybody has to admit it's probably one of the best organ solos of all time.
A very young Alan Price...😊
I loved Alan price, excellent key board player and pianist in many different genres.
You ain't wrong
@@evelynharper6346Ever hear his soundtrack for the film “O Lucky Man”? It should have won an Oscar (It did receive the British equivalent, a BAFTA).
absolutely brilliant!
Imagine that powerful voice coming out of that young kid! Fantastic! Eric Burdon has had quite a life. He is 82 now. He wrote two books about his experiences and they really are good reads.
Eric Burdon was 23 when he did this. He sings like an old player with a lifetime of experience.
I Think he had a lifrtime of experience he was born 1941 during ww2 ,in was left of the Uk .He was from a workingclass area i Newcastle, its the same for all this groups from the 60,s they had a hard childhood
Clapton too. He had already a very seasoned voice, when he was still a young man.

Eric Burdon has an amazing song list.
Eric's the most overlooked vocalist of all time. Powerful voice.
He's also the Eggman lol
Absolutely
This is a super old American folk song that's been rewritten, reperformed, etc by a number of musicians over hundreds of years. The lead belly version is pretty awesome too. The American Congress Library has a whole section on classic American folk and its worth checking out.
A stone cold classic. A simple arpeggio, stunning organ work and Eric Burdon's vocals (looks like a boxer, sounds like a fallen angel). Can't beat that. And Eric is still alive and well. They came from that time in British pop where everyone was into old-school R'n'B and authentic blues that gave the world some of the finest musicians to have ever lived. Glad you enjoyed it mate.
Crazy to think of people getting round, never having heard this in their life...
whythatsp , that's so sad but true !!
@Eugene Boucher I'm not sure when I was first introduced to this, tbh. But I can tell you I wasn't introduced to Pink Floyd until I was around 18/19. My kids haven't actually been introduced to motown, patsy cline, Elvis, and some other "greats" simply because I've never acquired them and we don't have/listen to stations that do.
I was raised on Golden Oldies on my mom's clock-radio, John Denver on cassette, classical via vinyl from the public library. Got my own clock-radio in 5th grade so further expanded my school influences with a Top40 pop station (that included Pour Some Sugar), and a neighbor intro'd me to GNR. Moved in 7th grade and had a country station as well as a more rock station (still had pop). Aware of Metallica, Crue, etc because of kids at school but didn't actually delve in until high school.
Some folks just don't come across other genres in the normal course of their life, regardless of how plugged-in they might feel/think they are. I was introduced to jazz by an assistant manager at my first job, "world" at a retail job a few years later, and another assistant manager got me to not dislike the Beatles so much. College roomie introduced me to The Doors. A friend's crush introduced me to RATM. My husband introduced me to Tool, Cake, and Phunk Junkeez.
Music is a journey for each of us, and many of us start from different locations. I agree that it can be mind-boggling to come across somebody that hasn't heard some major hit from a major group, especially one that's been covered by a number of other artists, but it truly depends on what genres and influences they started with. And sometimes, even tho their parents enjoy it, they might not necessarily catch the vibe till they're older (like my current teenager who recently "discovered" Hendrix despite it being played around him before. He simply wasn't cognizant of it being on.)
@Eugene Boucher You literally just answered your own question with your first statement rofl Not everyone is passionate about music, this is why pop music is popular because they just cater to those people who only use music as a background noise.
I've heard it growing up parents playing the oldies station. But recently have I actually payed attention to it and it's an amazing song. I have more respect for mid-60s rock. I favor the heavier rock music but it's roots come from the 60s.
I think regular europeans knows much more about music than regular US-citizen. I live small contry in norther Europe called Finland and we even learn music in school. All kinds of music from classical to rock. We learn to read notes, sing and play different instruments. It´s all basic knowledge. It is different thing what each other likes or dislikes. I started to listen metal when i was eight years old, but i do know alot of other categories as well and it´s not the only genre i like to listen. I also play guitar so i like to listen different types of guitar music and it doesn´t matter is it western, rock, heavy, country, classic or witch era it comes from. All that matter is how it sounds in my ears. Do i like it or not.
Also we have awsome varieties of radiostations that play all kinds of music. Soundtracks are also very interesting. Forrest Gump had great 60´s and 70´s songs, both Blues Brothers movies had great blues, Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey is more focused to metal just like Last Action Hero.
I realy understand if someone does not know Dimmu Borgir or any other black metal band (still shame on those😄), but that you don´t House of the rising sun. Wtf man?! It´s a f*cking classic. Everyone should be able to identify this song right away...
This song was a big hit in the 1960's. They've got other popular songs; "Don't Let me be Misunderstood", "We Gotta Get Out of This Place"," It's My Life", "Don't Bring Me Down", San Francisco Nights".
I grew up to this music, you are absolutely right, thanks for reminding!
This song just still sends chills. Even better for their solid, buttoned-down delivery.
Great era for music - they let the song tell the story, not on- stage antics.
In my opinion The Animals didn't make a bad song. One of the best bands of all time. And Eric Burden's voice?... Absolutely Brilliant!!! Thank you for shining a light on perhaps a little bit of forgotten greatness. ❤
If you thought the Animals were American you're wrong, they're an English rock/blues band from Newcastle, North England. Eric is a legend.
Never had an inkling they could be anything but American
@@oraach this happens alot, Americans think bands like Led Zeppelin Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Coldplay, Fleetwood Mac, Arctic Monkeys, Pink Floyd, Gorillaz, Adele, Ed Sheeran, David Bowie, Duran Duran, The Rolling Stones, Elton John, Queen, Oasis, Amy Winehouse and loads of others are American but all are actually English. England has been a powerhouse in music over the years and still continues to put out great bands and artists.
@@oraach I believe they were part of the British rock invasion occurring in the mid 1960s
@@OblivionGate Most of us are aware of those acts (though Gorillaz is kind of mysterious and Freddy Mercury didn't start his life in the UK).
@@OblivionGate Na we know they aint american lol. Just look at them lol
The house of the rising sun is a brothel. He is giving himself over to the inevitably of the life he will live there. Thanks for the reaction.A beautiful and moving song story.
too many here too young to know
A brothel is only one take on the unspecified place. There are several versions of the song.
@@imayb1 When it comes to the lead singer Eric Burdon, a brothel makes the most sense for this rendition. He ran way to France at a young age and went to a near by brothel regularly.
Exactly, giving himself over to his lust and inevitably his destruction.
The original is about the ruin of many a poor girl being the whores of the brothel but the Animals sung for the boys going there.
My man, so much incredible music came out of the 60's . Don't listen for color, listen for what touches your soul. I personally recommend CCR!
That keyboard performance is unforgettable and famous. The song goes way back.
I met these young men on my 16th birthday and they were so nice. They even brought me on stage and sang this song for me as it was my favorite. I will always remember their kindness.
This is by far their biggest and probably best song. But here are two other 'must hear' songs to get you started.
"Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" and "We've Gotta Get Out of This Place"

“It’s My Life”

One of the most iconic melodies ever !!!! These guys killed it vocally, and as musicians !!!
I saw Then Animals [w/Eric on vocal] at a theatre in Woolwich, London, in 1964...just after it was released for sale. How LUCKY I was!! What a band...what a song!! On the same show was The Nashville Teens [Tobacco Road], Carl Perkins all his rockabilly hits...Gene Vincent [touring the UK] and Chuck Berry. Little Richard was in the audience [managed to speak with him...at the side of the stage...Carl was on stage...watched Chuck "warming up" before taking the stage...what a night that was!! Now, 60 years on...I am 85...NEVER forgotten that night...I've seen some fantastic 'rock' shows in my time...THAT night was the greatest!! Eric Burdon had a fantastic voice...Alan Price, a terrific key-board player...went on in later years to have a TV series with Georgie Fame ['Price and Fame...I think it was called...Georgie was also an amazing performer]. Thank you so much for reminding me of such a terrific group...I'm so glad that, at last you have had such a rewarding experience!! [John...in Australia, ex "London Boy"! :)
A powerful voice, a powerful words, together it created a one in a million record. I never tire of listening to it.
This is one of the best recordings of all time, and the fact that there is a music video this high quality from fucking 1964 is amazing. There are music videos from the 90s that don't have a fraction of the definition of this video that are circulating the internet.
Film should never be forgotten!
Check out this insane quality
czcams.com/video/sCv-dIFGcd0/video.html
I was thinking the same thing
true, this is literally wizardry at this point
It was filmed on film. We can rescan the film at high definition now, whereas some of the original digital stuff was filmed at whatever it was filmed at, and will forever look of that low quality.
@@AnonyMous-pi9zm but film deteriorates. There be lines and splatters all over it.
Burdon had the greatest soul/rock voice of the 60s and 70s and into the 80s. He’s almost 81 and still singing with The Animals. (New Group)
This song still, after all these years, give me goose bumps.🥴♥️
Eric's vocals astound allot of people. His voice is absolutely amazing
They had some great songs. I was a teen when these came out. Try “We Got To Get Out Of This Place”, “Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood”, “It’s My Life”. You won’t be disappointed. Thank you for playing it.
I endorse this statement,
Try and find the live versions , brillliant
It’s My Life…the very first record I purchased with my pocket money as a nine year old in 1965
I was also. In 64 the Beatles were still making lighter music( though still excellent) and The Animals came out with this and The Stone released Satisfaction, taking the "English invasion" in a new, grittier musical direction. Both timeless songs!
"Dimples" and "See See Rider" are my personal favorites.
The teenager who sang like he'd been smoking 40 years and has seen some shit. Always good
What's a bit scary is that he looks like a little kid, although he did not look that way to me when the song came out (I was 13-14 at the time) and he would have been older...( I suppose he still is - LOL )-Oh well time doesn't march on _IT JOGS!!!!!
I heard he ran away from home at 17 and hung around in Paris brothels. He's 23 in this video.
He has the voice of a considerably larger, older, blacker man...
asthma...
right now germany has one like this. called hemming way
This singer was only in his early 20s at the time and sounded so powerful and gritty.
Jesus Christ. I have never seen this music video/performance, and not ever known how the members of the band look. My love of this song stems from my Grandmother ripping it (along with many other great tracks) on a early record player built into a very heavy dresser type unit. Solid wood, and the bass sounded beautiful. Analogue on my death bead. I swear!
Those were called a console stereo. It was a piece of furniture.
Good for Grandma!
"Don't Bring Me Down", "We Gotta Get Out of This Place", & "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" are some other great 'Animals' songs.
Great choices....
They are one of my favorite bands since I first Brard them in 1963 when I was 18
sky pilot
Oh yea, We Got to Get Out of This Place!
"Don't bring me down" is Electric Light Orchestra
Imagine having to play when the record light comes on, no cut, no copy, no paste, no delete and worst of all having to sing close to pitch without a computer to correct every syllable. Must have been terrifying! Or talent, ability and practice.
This wasn’t live. It’s lip syncing to a recording of the song
Imagine also recording on a limited number of tracks so if one person messed up the band had to go back and do it all over again because the entire thing had to be recorded again. There was no way to isolate that one person or instrument that made the mistake and do just that one part over and then add it back into the song. Same thing when singers appeared on TV shows. They had to do their song in an extremely limited number of takes (sometimes only one) so they had to get it right the first time. Because they were not given countless "takes" in which to get it right and because they had no auto-tune or other smoke and mirrors to help them get it right, musicians had to practice and practice and practice and practice until they were able to get it right the first time around. All that practicing is why they got so darned good! Bobby Hatfield's performance of "Unchained Melody" is a good example of this.
@@JadesOfGrey probably true, most likely. That being said, it probably was a nightmare for
the artist to try and do everything in one or two takes. So much easier now. They probably don't
even need the artist in there anymore. Lol !
We were all stunned to see that voice come from Eric Burdon. He later collaborated on an album with "War titled Eric Burton declares War.". "Spill that Wine" originally sung by War is on it. War did the infamous song"Low Rider"
I tried to imitate Eric`s voice but hurt myself trying...
I’ve heard it in the 60s as a small child! I’m so blessed to have enjoyed all kinds of music ever since I can remember. ❤❤❤
The House of the Rising Son is a brothel. His mother was love, sewed his new blue jeans. His father was dissipation, a gambling man. He chose both, wearing that ball and chain. It’s an old song, from the late 1930s Depression era.
Yea it's hard to imagine someone who's never heard of this. I'm old I guess.
Always understood it to mean a brothel.. can't see how people reach a different conclusion. The lyrics are meant to be quite literal.
I too always heard it was a brothel, thought the ball and chain referred to is that his life is tied to that place, perhaps ruined by drugs and dissipated like his father's life. An incredible song - listened to it as a young teen and found it overwhelming 💖
I had always understood that the 'house' was a drug rehab house
It's actually much, much older than that. The song has been altered over the centuries but it traces back from a French folk song from the 1700's.
It's honestly such an insane song to hear a bunch of dudes in suits sing, it's been one of my favorites for many years and you can really hear the blues influence.
I grew up in the UK This was a big hit when I was young. Eric Burdon's voice is legendary.
Earliest American versions: Roy Acuff, an "early-day friend and apprentice" of Clarence Ashley's, learned it from him and recorded it as "Rising Sun" on November 3, 1938.
I live in the French Quarter, near Bourbon Street. I hear this song DOZENS of times a week. The song doesn't get old, but the performances do.
Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood is a must! 🔥 One of my all-time favorites. I truly enjoy your reactions.

Eric Burdon had probably the best voice of the 60's early 70's. He could sing anything
The Animals was really under rated by many. Check out their history. The Monkeys were also under rated . The influence they had on the music world was tremendous.
Easily one of the best songs ever made! Eric's voice is unparalleled
His voice is a right fit for blues songs
Always one of my very favourite songs and band
AMEN.
This is one of music history's "epic" songs. Much like Bohemian Rhapsody, Space Oddity, and Stairway to Heaven, it is just one of those songs that everyone knows in the back of their mind.
My son (17) is a very accomplished, self-taught guitar player. My mother, being the delight she is, told him he wasn't a real guitar player until he could play House of The Rising Sun. A month later he came to me and said, "Listen to this." and flawlessly played the hell out of this song.
Brilliant. This brings back many, many happy memories . Eric Burdon was fantastic.
Nobody expected the voice out of that young man, but, oh, boy! He's 80 and may be still singing today. Eric Burdon, one of my favorites as a teenager. The keyboardist is fantastic. And they are all babies. Check out Spill The Wine.

Spill the Wine is a great song.
These young guys were all in their early 20’s. Eric Burdon himself was 23 years old. He’s had a great voice his entire life, and is now 80 years old. Still singing. One of my favorites since I was 20 years old. Since I’m now 78, that’s a long time! 😉
He's also British but wow can he sing the blues!
My favourite song of all times, I’m 68 and still remember all the words 🥰
I'm 76 love the song then and still love and thay are British I'm from London UK thay came from the North of England he is still going strong and singing in a band .
This song was a very old blues song but done masterfully by the animals and their songs "we got to get out of this place" and "don't let me be misunderstood" are amazing as well
I just don't know how anyone hasn't heard this song before! It's a classic. ❤️
I'm 67 years old and remember the Animals very well. But the House of the Rising Sun is a much older song, circa 1930's. I grew up in and around New Orleans and can explain a few things about this song. The House of the Rising Sun was a gambling house and brothel. The man singing came to ruin because he was addicted to gambling and was also a drunkard. When he references going back to New Orleans to "wear a ball and chain" he's talking about going to prison. In Louisiana, they used to cuff an ankle chain, attached to a large iron ball to convicts. This prevented them from escaping when they were taken out to work on the roads or "Chain Gangs". The song is a warning to young men and women to avoid that kind of lifestyle, or you'll end up like the singer. The Brits were in love with American blues music in the sixties and still have a fondness for it today. But you're right Eric Burdon has a hell of a voice! 🌄🌄🌄
Great music wish we had more young musicians like this!❤😂🥌♥️
One take, that's all they had to do this. Eric Burdon is still simply amazing.
And I who lives in Newcastle (England) didn't know until this video that he is from here......basically a mile away. Stunning voice, stunning song and band ! Underrated.
You aren't hearing them live. They would record their performance the day before and perform to the backing track on TV. The guitars aren't even plugged in.
@Eugene Boucher The song recording was. The video not so much.
@@Crewonephotography Not when I saw them in 1969. A small venue in Phoenix, AZ. No place to hide all that tech setup. This was probably before the band got big. I loved them then and didn't know he was still out there.
@@don178 Not so much no, especially as the keyboard moves about 20 feet at the end of the song!
When he speaks about going back to New Orleans “to wear that ball and chain”, it has nothing to do with marriage and everything to do with following in his father’s footsteps.
Eric Burdon is amazing. So much grit to his voice.
Class act, loved how they bowed at the end,
Seriously? How have people never heard this song?

Love the way Eric Burton sings wow I could listen to the animals all day long
The orgins of the song are buried in folk history, however a common theme amongst music historians is that the song was originally written for and performed by a woman and was about the said woman working in a house of disrepute, i.e. a brothel called The Rising Sun and served as a warning to other young ladies so that they made better choices lest they also end up working as a prostitute.
I 4got to mention that the lead singer, Eric Burdon suffered asthma throughout his life! and yet has an the most AWESOME voice! it's a shame he never got the credit that he truly deserved and is underappreciated! :(
He's not underappreciated. Those in the know give him his props.
I don't agree. He was considered one of the greatest voices of the British Invasion. Maybe younger people don't know his voice but I'm over 20 years younger than him and would recognize that howly bluesy awesomeness anywhere.

His voice is like a force of nature. Even asthma couldn’t hinder its powerful delivery.
His stuff with War was great too
That Eric Burdon!!! Thats the guy that made 'War' his backup band!!!

I keep this on repeat….czcams.com/video/rVPyRJKwvAM/video.html
Second on Spill the Wine, such a bop!
Am I forever glad that I had the pleasure to grow up with this kind of music.
Its crazy how many great songs came from the group "Animals". It's also wild to look at what other groups these guys joined after the Animals broke up. It's real R&R geneology.
House that's "been the ruin of many a poor boy"; opium den, brothel, speak-easy club, take your pick. You are too young to remember this band and this tune, but it was MASSIVE at the time it came out and is an icon of its era.
The original was about a girl not a boy. ‘It’s been the ruin of many a poor girl and me, O God, for one’
Wow... I don't think he's to young...I know this song well and just realized it was made before I was born...lol... but it amazes me the classics people don't know.... and what people consider classics today...lol
I once read that this place was an oriental brothel and opium den . People would come for the whores , get hooked on opium and up in a complete ruin , staying there until they died. Of interest is that this same thing was occurring in China and it was ruining parts of the country so badly that the Chinese government was trying to close them down . The opium was being brought there by the Sassoon family which was a branch of the Rothschilds , and they owned the opium fields in Afganistan at the time. Several nations grouped together to fight the Chinese and force them to allow the flow of opium into the country . The conflict was called the Boxer Rebellion . This was open proof that the heads of all those countries were in the pocket of the Rothschilds.
@@bobsblues9944 thank you!
I actually saw them live at the Royal Albert Hall when they did a reunion gig in the 1980s
"House of the Rising Sun" was a brothel and was written as a Blues song to be sung by a woman, more than a century ago. The Animals altered the original lyrics as the experiences of a young man.
Dolly Parton sings the woman's version of this. Her vocals are amazing, but as a whole that version suffers from being produced in the 1980's (has a bit of lingering disco sound).
Never knew that, thanks.
Lauren O’Connell has a great cover of it. Also told from a woman’s POV and it’s now one of my favorites
@@jordanalexis3850 thank you for the recommendation - it's a good cover. If you haven't listened to the Dolly Parton version, I recommend it. The lyrics are very different - "My father was a gambler, Mother died when I was young. And I've worked since then to pleasure the men in the House of the Rising Sun"
I never knew that, thank you.
I was learning English listening to those songs. :) Back when the internet did not exist.
I was a toddler when this song came out, and I still stop to feel the soul decades later. Classic.
They had to look clean cut back then to get airplay. If it was today, he's be all grunged out. LOVE the Animals. They had some excellent music.
Sad thing is, if it was today, he'd still be pretty clean cut, and having to sing pop or hiphop.
I prefer the clean cut look.
Yeah if you were a band you wore the same outfits. I especially loved the bow at the end.
@@SH-qs7eeNo he wouldn’t. He just wouldn’t be mainstream.
That was a pretty rough hairstyle. The rebellion is definitely there in how it's combed out. He looks/sounds like a guy you wouldn't want to to tangle with.
My mother sang a version of this song to me, when I was a child, some time in the 1950's (I was born in 1945; I'm 76 now.) The song was very old, then; when I heard the Animals sing it, it was 1966. I was home on leave from the USMC, heard it in Macon, Georgia. In that time and place, the Animals were singing lead-in for Herman's Hermits, and the audience basically ignored the Animals and chattered all through it. Pissed off both me AND the Animals. When the song finished, the Animals' lead singer threw the microphone into the audience, he was so angry.
The House of the Rising Sun was a brothel in New Orleans, during the 1800's. Young men were ruined there by sexually transmitted diseases To wear a ball and chain was NOT to get married, that is a much later metaphor. The person singing the song has been convicted of a crime, road gangs wore a ball and chain.
Just thought you'd like to know.
Interesting.
What you said. Thanks.
Oorah thanks for sharing
It's a very classic folk song. Its roots likely go back to English folk songs and a version we'd likely recognize was first recorded in the 1930s in Appalachia. Fun fact, the Animals probably were inspired by the Bob Dylan version which got a lot of acclaim and Dylan basically copied it from one of his friends, Dave Van Ronk. Polyphonic does a very good video on it which is more extensive
Yes. This is what I felt like it meant. Much more to the message. Thank you.
This song is about Angola prison near New Orleons,Orleans, The House of the rising sun. Another good Animals song is We Got To Get out of this place.😊
I can remember listening to all of the music in the 60’s driving with my mom in her 1965 Ford Galaxy convertible when I was 2-6 years old! I literally can remember where we were driving in Los Angeles when these songs were playing. I only lived blocks away from where R.F.K. was assassinated at the Ambassador Hotel where I took tennis lessons when I was 10-11 years old. Music is the soundtrack to my life. 🩷🩵💜
This lead vocalist, Eric Burdon, performed "Spill the Wine" with a band called War. That performance is truly awesome.
This is probably the oldest secular song in America. It dates back to colonial America when New Orleans was still under the French Flag. Initially, it was written from the perspective of a prostitute in the house of ill repute. In those days, those houses had prostitution, gambling, alcohol, and drugs. Those houses were where you could get any vice you wanted, if you had money. When he talks about going back to the House, he is giving in to that lifestyle and acknowledges he will die living that way like his father.
In 1964, the Animals were on a crazy touring schedule. When they recorded this song, they had taken a red eye flight from UK. (This is actually a lip synced video for a movie. The story I’m telling here is the original studio recording that was used for the records and this video.) They got to the studio straight from the airport. They recorded this on the first try, then were immediately back in the car to go on to another gig, hopefully catching a few minutes of sleep. One of the big factors in the break up of The Animals is that they were completely overbooked for performances, which had lots of sleep deprivation and stress. Half the guys coped by drinking, the others by doing drugs, so there was also a lot of infighting. And to that the overbearing personalities of Eric Burdon (lead Singer) and Alan Parsons (band founder) in constant conflict, and the band quickly imploded even though they were incredibly successful.
Another great video to watch is Eric Burdon covering Hold on I’m Coming. That one is a life performance and it’s amazing!

I don't know about the "oldest secular song", but I agree that this song was originally written from a woman's point of view, as someone who felt trapped in the the house. While the Animals did a great cover, the few women artists who recorded this song also did a great job.
Ball & chain might also refer to an actual chain gang, as it filtered through history.
The phrase, "...house of ill repute" reminded me of a joke: What do you call a woman who sells her body for spaghetti? A pastatute. 😄
So the roots for this song actually come from a 16th century ballad by the title of "The Unfortunate Rake"
@@lucasschmitter671 wow! Very interesting. It’s even older. My research went back when Louisiana when it was still under the French flag. I’d love to hear more if you don’t mind.
Btw, have you looked at the CZcams channel The History Guy? It’s fascinating. I’ve happily lost way too much sleep watching “just on video” before bed, lol.
: "We Gotta Get Out Of This Place" is another you should check out if you haven't already. -- Also some trivia: The Animals couldn't afford much studio time and were also working in the Chuck Berry tour of the UK at the time. So one morning they got all their equipment, drove to London, went to the studio, set up, did a sound check and a run-thru, and then did one take. Then the packed up and headed back to catch back up with the tour in Southampton. That was all the studio time they had time and money for, and they recorded one of the songs that will never die.
Alan Price on that organ was a terrific player. As far as I'm concerned, he was the best part of the sound of the band (aside from Eric's voice, of course).
This is what it's like when you don't rely on autotune, and can actually sing. Amazing isn't it?
I get chills every time I hear this song. Just something about it.
this is the kind of song that I have to listen to all the way through, every time. It never ages
Am 73...this was played at every school dance, much to the chagrin of our teacher chaperones; along with "C'mon Baby Light My Fire"...great slow dance!!
ERIC BURDON (LEAD SINGER) SANG THE HELL OUT OF THIS SONG. HE GREW UP IN THE UK AND HAD A HARD UPBRINGING; THIS SONG IS ERIC BURDON. LIFE WASN'T EASY FOR HIM BUT HE TURNED HIS DIFFICULTIES INTO THESE SOUL PIERCING VOCALS YOU'RE HEARING.
AND THIS VIDEO THAT YOU SEE WAS DONE IN ONE TAKE. PHENOMENAL.
HE ALSO SANG THE SONG "SPILL THE WINE" WITH THE GROUP WAR.
HE IS THE GOAT.
House of the Rising Sun is a "place of ill repute". Always liked this song and his vocal is brilliant.
House of the Rising Sun was an anthem for the soldiers in Viet Nam. It was applicable to the ruin and futility of the circumstances they found themselves in. I remember the older brothers of my friends being drafted, the fear of having a low number, the news we watched every night with the death tolls, images of fear and chaos, talk of those who had gone underground or fled to Canada, and the protests. I saw the rich, slick, and connected, buy and maneuver their sons out of the draft. House of the Rising Sun was a raw, soulful lament. The poor and powerless sacrificed to enrich and empower the already rich and powerful: Nothing new there.
My uncle Tommy was from Jersey.
He said he and his friends from the east, loved Frankie Valley and the four seasons too.
Rip Uncle Tommy. 🙏
That's exactly what I thought about as soon as I heard the lyrics,....
There's a little town on Maui where draft dodger's
were safe. Many of those
Folks are still there.
Another was also by the Animals called "We Gotta Get Outta This Place''. THAT one had everyone in the joint singing along. Their anti-war position was clear with the release of "Sky Pilot'' an epic anti-war production. I got to listen to both long before I got to go to Vietnam despite no interest in doing so.
I remember too.
Eric Burton is a great singer who eventually joined War.
The animals took the place of three dog night at our fair several years ago. Best concert I’ve ever been to.
Eric Burden was definitely a unique voice. The entire Animals catalog is well worth a listen.
Glad you enjoyed this, it’s a classic and Eric Burden’s voice is amazing. Try Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood if you want to hear more from this band
Also listen to It's My Life
all performed without the modern day technical equipment that can adjust the sound of both the music
and the voices etc.
Burdon.
Blues was a HUGE influence in Britain in early 1960s. This was very much due to a man named Alexis Korner. In 1964, the same year as this single was released. the American Negro Folk Blues Festival toured Britain. Among others there were Howlin' Wolf, Sugar Pie Desanto, Big Mama Thornton, John Lee Hooker, Sleepy John Estes and Sonny Boy Williamson. Sonny Boy Williamson was our hero at the time. I was 16. Remember these guys came from the segregated southern states and were suddenly confronted by hoards of young white kids speaking English dialects they did not understand who simply loved their music. The Rolling Stones started as a blues band (check Little Red Rooster), Eric Clapton also emerged from this era. The Animals with Eric Burdon as lead singer were from north-east England. Note also that Jimi Hendrix, though American, became famous in Britain first. The British guys always acknowledged their debt to black American bluesmen. In a number of cases, people like Eric Clapton, Keith Richards and Mick Jagger paid funeral expenses and gravestones for their heroes who were ignored in the US public, not only by white racists but also by blacks who wanted to distance themselves from the old 'race music' Hubert Sumlin, Howlin' Wolf's guitarist comes to mind immediately as one whose funeral was catered for by the British guys.
Listen to Don’t let me be misunderstood.Another Animals classic!
Eric Burdon lead singer of the animals was born in Walker, Newcastle upon time England. His vocals were quite amazing, as he casually walks around singing towards the camera, with what appears to be little effort. Truly wonderful talent.
Manchester, England.
In this video the walking and his singing just put me in mind of the wandering minstrels of old and he pulled it off brilliantly.
I think you mean Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Burdon is a Geordie - like me! :)
Iconic '60s band! This song was replayed a million times by kids who'd never heard anything like it....including me! The Animals were part of the "British Invasion" along with the Beatles, Rolling Stones, the WHO, Yardbirds, Kinks, and on and on!
The Animals ( a British band from Newcastle UK) transformed this traditional Cowboy campfire song into something really special and haunting. Try listening also to their track ‘Baby can I take you Home’ too. They’ve really nailed the Blues genre.
This was originally an old folk / blues song, I would say it was slightly reworded for the Animals performance.
The house of the Rising Sun was a brothel and he is singing about his sad return to it, the ball and chain refers to his addiction, "whatever that addiction is".
This version of the song still give me chills after decades. A couple of other songs that I'd recommend giving a listen to would be "We Gotta get Outta this Place" and "When I was Young"
