Hey Music Junkies, Professor of Rock always here to celebrate the greatest artists and the greatest songs of all time. We interview the great artists of the rock era and you never know what’s in store from day to day, subscribe so you don’t miss out.
I had the distinct privilege to speak with Rock and Roll Hall of Fame frontman of the Animals in our Eric Burdon interview some time ago and I was blown away. Whenever you are in the presence of a legend’s legend it’s a truly special. I mean Bruce Springsteen, Jon Bon Jovi, so many others who are directly influenced by them. Eric Burdon as the leader of the Animals was straight up, balls to the wall, no holds barred, heart rupturing and soul galvanizing as a singer. Few can compare to his intensity or his integrity for what he’s singing.
My dad introduced me to the Animals when I was very young and he said, this is what rock and roll is all about and of course he was right. The animals were a force to be reckoned with in the 60s and were right there with the Beatles, the Stones, The Byrds, the Supremes, the Four Tops and the Beach Boys in that fantastic 64-66 period of music. Many have argued that their number one hit The House of the Rising Sun was the first Folk Rock Hit. We talk about this in the mini documentary that will follow. We also bring Roger McGuinn of the Byrds into that conversation as well. The House of the Rising sun as with many classic folk ballads, is unknown in who the actual writer or composer was. There has been plenty of speculation .
Musicologists say that it is based on the tradition of broadside ballads, and thematically it does have some resemblance to the 16th-century ballad the Unfortunate Rake. But there isn’t clear evidence that there is a direct relation “. The great historian and musician Alan Lomax said that "Rising Sun" was the name of a bawdy house in two traditional English songs, and it was also a name for English pubs. He also said that the melody might be related to a 17th-century folk song, "Lord Barnard and Little Musgrave", also known as Matty Groves. Lomax also put forth the idea that the location of the house was then relocated from England to New Orleans by White Southern performers.
Others have said different. I discuss some of this with Eric and though there are disputes about the origin of the song, there is no dispute that the Animals recorded the definitive version of this song. Others who recorded it include Roy Acuff, Leadbelly, Woodie Guthrie, Nina Simone Pete Seeger, Bob Dylan, Dolly Parton and many more. Here is Eric Burdon of the Animals with the complete story as we go into this interview I want to thank our Sponsor Zennie Eyewear. I’m wearing them now. It's not possible to say how many times I've belted out this song, singing along with your uncle, in the car, the living room, the lake, the kitchen.. since it first came out. I was 11 or 12, and couldn't get enough of The Animals. I liked other groups too- but the voice and delivery of Eric Burdon was like no other. I was, and still am, astounded by that voice coming from such a young man. I remain a fan..

I was the luckiest man in the world when i met the animals thanks to my dad. We were at the old Americana hotel across from what is now the Ed Sullivan theater. I was 10 years old. My dad called up to our room and said Mitch come downstairs I want you to meet some people I met. So i go downstairs into a completely empty bar and my dad brings me in and there they were. The freakin Animals!! And I met Mr. Burton and all the guys. And they were dressed up in their tuxedos ready to go across the street and create history. My dad has since passed on, but i will never forget what he did for me. Thank you dad. I love you.

I loved Eric Burdon & the Animals since I was a kid in the 60s. In the late 1990s my lady friend & I went to see him play for the first time in club in Sydney and much to our delight we were invited by the New Animals’ keyboard player to their dressing room after the fantastic concert. Eric was such a nice & humble person and chatted with us for at least 20 mins until the guitar player said it was time to leave. Aynsley Dunbar the drummer was also very cool. We had a photo taken with Eric & he gave us his wooden bead bracelet as a token of friendship and wished us well. I cherish that night to this very day. Saw him play twice again on his subsequent tours down under …

I have met a number of musicians who I liked and admired, and when they hear that you play as well, they light up. They ask about what you like, what gear you have, etc., how you got started. It’s refreshing, but maybe shouldn’t surprise us. They didn’t do it for the fan worship in almost all cases. They just wanted to make an okay living with what they loved doing.

Funny story about Hilton. In the music video for House of the Rising Sun you can see him near the end behind Erin just smiling like a school boy. They even showed a brief glimpse at the end of this video, but he was smiling even wider a few seconds prior to the clip shown. I find it hilarious every time because you can tell they're trying to go for a real somber tone in the video, but he just can't help himself hide his excitement!

Big cabinet speakers with split wood grates on the front…running signal thru a factory added amp, It was loud as hell for a home stereo back in the day. I can still remember listening to The Animals, Grass Roots, Steppenwolf, The Beatles, CCR, etc. I remember how crazy it was to see the little drawings and sayings my father had made on his original reels…like a twisted 60s erosion of the crap I’d draw on book covers in school but penned by a 19 or 20 yr old kid who’s seen and done things an 19 yr old should know anything about. I wish I still had that stereo and those reels. Eric Burden still has his singing chops having heard him some years ago. A great performer. One great 'Geordie'.

I saw him also at a Casino in Florida around 2008 or 2009, the musicians were not that impressive but he was still in rare form and a great voice.

That was great!! That song will live forever. Loved his vocals, the great guitar sound and of course the organ. Lyrics, the soul, everything. Burdon was so authentic, it sounded like he really did get sucked in to the House of The Rising Sun.

HotRS is one of those songs that sounds like it's always existed...it wasn't written, it was excavated from our collective consciousness.

In 1994 I saw Eric Burdon perform "House Of the Rising Sun". The band started play the familiar opening, the guitar hook, the organ, bass , drums.....the audience erupted in grateful applause. Eric grinned and shouted into his microphone 🎤 , "I HATE this f*cking song!!!"

My God. You interviewed the *legendary* Eric Burdon. 🙌🏻 A legend's legend, just like you said. Such an amazing score on your part because this man's career has spanned seven decades and he has not done many interviews. Amazing.
One of my favorite singers of all-time. Such a huge influence on many singers, including the legendary Jim and Van Morrison (no relation, LOL). And he's still alive. *KNOCKS ON WOOD*

Yeah I can still hear his Geordie accent, one of the most popular accents in the UK. Love the animals and the song. I grew up with the great music of the 60's & 70's a great period of real musicians and singers, etc

My elementary school teacher gave us free guitar lessons at lunch hour. Buy a guitar and show up. This was one of the songs in his material, but we never really learned it. As he told me after a number of years, he never got comfortable enough with the chord progression to try teaching it to us. When I showed up and played him a finger style version with the famous arpeggios in it that my sister and I had figured out, he loved it. I have always thanked him for giving me the chance to learn guitar. I have always loved that song, and the Animals’ version especially. I still sing and play it every chance I get. As Eric says, “magic”. Thank you, sir.

I'm glad he referenced the fact that the original song he sourced was sung by a woman and about a brothel and the vice was prositution not gambling. His adaptation still stands and is the definitive version that is the soundtrack of the sixties. Nina Simone is pretty spectacular as well.

  • @paulettemackenzie-dubuc6927

Classic classic classic! I'd love to hear Eric's comment on "Sky Pilot" so bone chillingly poignant even to this day. So much more than just another song!
