It was about time I finally tackled the last major Romance language left, and I wanted to start with a more obscure folk song from the area of Fundão, in Beira Baixa.     I wanted to bring together different aspects of the music in the area surrounding Fundão, namely of the Beiras and the general Centro region. The main percussive drive is provided by the adufe, a square frame drum said to be of Moorish origin, and most often associated with religious music, though it also had secular uses, specifically for field work. I modelled the rythm after a simple triple metre pattern heard in this recording: • Beira Baixa - Música T...
    I also brought in the sound of a bagpipe, the gaita-de fole de Coimbra, which has affinities with its northern sibling, the Northern Portuguese-Galician gaita, and of an accordion, an instrument commonly heard in the region.

This battle ensured Portugal would remain independent. St. Nuno would also try to conquer Castille, making progress, before the Pope himself ordered him to stop.

    The Galician-Portuguese bagpipe is even mentioned in the letter about the discovery of Brazil, written by Pero Vaz de Caminha to King Dom Manuel. It was the first foreign instrument played here. The writer reports that the Amerindians really liked it, they even brought drums and started playing music and dancing on the beach with the Portuguese... Well, what comes next is a lot of history, but that's how Brazil and the nation we are today came about lol

      O modo que ele pronuncia é uma mistura do português padrão (Lisboeta) com o dialecto da Beira Baixa.

    Once again, I am completely amazed at your ability to research about a culture so well, even if it’s not very known. Myself being originally from Beira Baixa and Alto Alentejo, this brings me such joy and pride. Another bonus is that you learnt the actual Portuguese 🇵🇹 accent to stay “truthful” to the culture you wanted to represent, which is rare and I appreciate very much since Brasil 🇧🇷 has many more speakers than us.     Field work songs from any given culture are probably my favourite type of folk music. The "ordinary" lower class people are, to me, the heart and soul of a country/culture and so their music feels like the essence of that place.
    Which reminds me, I recommend listening to Tairyo Utai Komi aka Fisherman's Song. Amazing Japanese folk song!

    It always amazes me that you manage to capture so many cultures and languages with such accuracy and care - Latin and Portuguese are the only two I can really attest to with any experience, but everything seems so flawless I can only assume that quality and accuracy must carry over to every other language

    Congrats, Farya! I was wondering who had you invited to sing, but then I saw you sung it. Impeccable portuguese accent, you nailed it. I took my college degree in the region you point out, so i'm very familiar with Tosquias, more typically played on the northern part of Portugal. You did a great job. Hope you get a chance to look at Fado, which is typical from the center part of the country, and Cante Alentejano, which is often a male choir and has historical roots on the Moors, who occupied the southern regions of Alentejo and Algarve) for quite some time.

    As a native portuguese, I have to say your pronounciantion is pretty good. Moreover, there is something incredibly familiar about the music itself. Totally something a folk music group would play. Had I not known any better, I would have thought this had been composed and sung by a portuguese person.

    Coincidence or not, I was thinking of recommending a Portuguese song for you to sing and record (I'm Portuguese even this song is from my region.)
    Perhaps the biggest coincidence is that the song I had in mind has a verse just like this one...
    And one thing you did that is historically accurate is to use the bagpipes. They were once common in the Beira culture, but have now been lost, being used only for specific events.
    The songs of the Beira region usually show a typology that corresponds to the key tunings of the bagpipes.
