Neurosurgeon talks brain tumor warning signs after UGA student dies following diagnosis

- A University of Georgia student who suffered a brain hemorrhage while on spring break in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, passed away Friday after being diagnosed with an aggressive brain tumor. Liza Burke initially thought she had a headache and tried to sleep it off, but about five hours later her friends found her unconscious while on vacation in March, according to her family. Eventually, she was taken to the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville where doctors discovered that she had a brain tumor.
I saw her Mom talking about her weeks ago. I thought she was getting better. I am heartbroken for her Mom. She was such a beautiful young lady. Prayers for her and the rest of the family.

I am sad to see this. I remember that interview, too. This story has raised awareness of the symptoms of brain tumors, and that they can happen to young people. Her daughter may save lives. Though this is such a terrible loss for the mother, family and friends, I hope they can find a little bit of comfort in that, at least.
Not to be rude, but there is no getting better from a brain stem tumor. That’s basically a sealed deal. Her mother probably said that out of hope and optimism. But the video we just watched clearly states the tumor she had was the worst one and concluded a 6 month time til death.
@@automnejoy5308thought that I agree with raising awareness, there is usually no coming back from a brain stem tumor. The most modern advanced technology can’t even fix that. It’s usually always a death sentence. A brain stem tumors are extremely rare like this, hence why she was in the news. Most people won’t need to raise awareness about this because it’s basically a death sentence. Unless they unveil some super technology that can unlodge a tumor from your brain stem without paralyzing you would be amazing.

I too had Menigiomas, first was the size of a lemon. My symptoms kept getting worse and I was ignored by doctors being too young. My symptoms got so bad, I went blind while driving and almost hit a car head on. I could no longer see with migraines. An mri was done and they found a massive Meningioma 4 inches long, 3 inches high, 2 inches into my brain on the front right temporal lobe. I had a craniotomy and the damage was so bad I have a bovine meninges implanted and a plate now in the side of my head that looks like a massive dent. Any bone a tumor touches and attaches to bone must be removed to prevent metastasis. It was a hard recovery from memory, speech, and more but I pulled through and still alive. It took me 1.5- 2 years to almost be normal. I got my sight back when it was taken out. I still have bleeding in the brain, but a small amount. I formed a second menigioma front left temporal lobe just above my eye and a new treatment is available without cranitomy.If your reading this and suffering from a current head tumor, look into Gamma Knife. I got the pin point radiation last Jan and my tumor has shrunk with no real side affects. and went home the same day. I felt like I got sun burned on my skin for a week due to it being so close to the bone. I am now being used in a study to premote the device as I am a living side by side comparison of cranitomy vs gamma knife on damage and quality of life.

This is such a devastating disease, so terrible. When I was on my Pediatrics rotation in med school, had a 5 year old patient who presented to us with a sudden lazy eye. The paediatrician I was working with ordered an MRI saying it was weird how quickly it came on but then the eye specialist CANCELLED THE MRI!!! Without telling her, because he thought it was just a community paediatrician overreacting about a simple lazy eye. But my preceptor knew her patients very well and just knew things weren’t right about this case and after she found out it was cancelled (delayed the kid’s MRI by 4 months!!) she was able to beg a radiologist to put him back on the list and by the time we got the results of glioblastoma, he only had about 6 months left to live and oncology didn’t even think we could do anything for him to slow it down because of the deep deep location it was in. I still think about that kiddo every time I see a lazy eye. I pray that he beat the odds he was given!! This stuff is absolutely a devastating disease!!
As far as I know a GBM (glioblastoma) is always fatal. My husband died at 50 because of a GBM. That was 15 years ago. His death was delayed by 10 months because of rigorous, brutal chemo, after surgery. Once he chose to discontinue chemo because he couldn't take it anymore he died in about a month. The timeline was exactly as his oncologist had predicted. A GBM is a horrible cancer.
@@mbmochinski yes Mary, you are right. GBM is always fatal. My husband died at 72 2 years ago. He had a history of strokes, so we thought the last collapse was another stroke but it turned out to be the deadly tumour. He at least got to his age, but I always feel for young children with brain tumours, and young seemingly fit people, especially those with young families facing this awful diagnosis. I hope you are doing ok.

My dear sister died from one several years ago. Her boss at Humana noticed something in her step as she walked by one day & urged her to get checked. Less than a year later she passed.

Not that I disagree with the advice, especially listening to your body, but simply saying "live a healthy lifestyle" is such a generic recommendation that it seems annoying and a bit insulting. It's like telling people to "just be happy".
Brain tumors seem to be completely random. No predicting who will get them and no predicting the outcome if you do get one.

well I know two signs for sure my husband has 4 atypical grade 2 mengiomas with brain invasion (all separate areas of the brain including the brain stem). First warning sign: he has sleep apnea and despite his CPAP machine couldn’t breathe well and kept complaining of sinus pressure. His ENT ordered a CT scan and that’s how the first one was discovered. He had a craniotomy to remove it but new ones in different areas keep popping up like a game of whack-a-mole.
The second risk: he survived two types of childhood cancer when he was 3 and 5 years old. His oncologist says they are seeing a link between long term childhood cancer survivors (especially who received radiation in the 1970s - 1980s) and these tumors popping up 20-30 years later. He had zero follow up as an adult, which is common, so if you are a survivor or know a survivor please encourage them to get checked at an aftercare clinic! We’re 5 years into this hanging over our heads, and I don’t know what the future is going hold for us because we know from pathology he has a more aggressive type than usual that can become malignant over time. So every 6 months it’s watch and wait, we know they will never go away, and it affects his vision so we don’t know how many more years he can work for (he’s a Dentist). The one on his brainstem is too risky to operate on so he’s done CyberKnife radiation. He’s turning 50 this year

One surgeon wanted to remove it and another said it’s benign let’s just watch it .

My husband was diagnosed with 7 brain tumors. He started having bad headaches and vomiting plus losing his memory. He was rushed to the hospital after getting lost going to work. Thats when they found the tumors. He was diagnosed in Nov of 07 and died in Jan of 08. If you have severe headache, vomiting get it checked our immediately. It could save your life.
Same with heart/blood clot..my bro was throwing up when he stood up all night and died in the morning on the way to the hospital. We could have saved him but neither of us had a clue it was even possible at his age.
The saddens me to my core… My heartfelt sympathies to all who know and love her.
Been following this case and it is so heartbreaking! Devastating that she was so young, on vacation, and took a nap just for a headache. I sure hope she died with dignity and no pain.
I m sure this woman knew something was wrong with her, but these doctors did not do their jobs. Happened to my 5 year daughter with headaches for 1 year. Took to every possible doctor that I could think of , oh was allergy, oh was sinus infection, oh was migraine, oh SHE DID NOT WANT TO GO TO SCHOOL and lots of meds. One night I saw my child hitting her head on the wall, craying in pain. She described it was like a knife cutting into her head. I m notttttt going to say how crazy I became. I took her to her pediatrician demanding he do something. To make a long e story short. She was dx with brain cancer. The oncologist at memorial Sloan , asked me , why did I take so long to take her there? I gave the name and number of the pediatrician, I m sure they called him because the next day the pediatrician called me to apologize. I m not going to tell everyone what I told him because CZcams will block me. But I m sure all of you have an ideia.

Because insurance only pays for a 20-minute office visit, that's all you get from your GP or Pediatrician.
Its your profit-based system. I went in for a bad headache i had for two months..they gave me bloodwork, one mri, then another mri with idoine for higher brain resolution just to be sure. I saw a neurologist and sinus speicialist too. All that in the same day on a walk-in no cost at all...to anyone... So why would the doctors not try everything.
Hi everyone currently I have a nephew battling cancer in the head as well and let me tell you, never trust your local doctors or hospital please seek a specialist. With all due respect this young lady was treated badly my nephew was treated the same way he didn't needed radiation nor chemo if anything he's lucky to still be alive, long story short he didn't even needed chemo nor radiation right away the doctors effed up. In the end we moved him to a specialist in MD anderson Houston tx. 🙏 sending prayers for this family.

My mother passed away from Glioblastoma the 22 of January 2024, got diagnosed in December, worst Christmas ever, but got to take care or my mother and give her all the attention that she needed. Less than a Month later she passed away. I can only wish to people to enjoy their life and their family as much as they can.
Oh I was hoping she would have survived. Her poor mom. Prayers to the entire family.
My older sister was diagnosed with a brain tumor last year and it’s been really difficult for all of us especially her. In order for her to be able to afford treatments she has to work through chemo ): I wish I was able to fix it

A freaking big tumor was found attached to my brain stem as a teenager. Another kid Shane in my neighborhood had the exact same thing. Now my tumors are numbering 5 as of 2 years ago and Shane's killed him in 2018

My brother had it for 9 years. He didn’t eat healthy and consumed a lot of sugar. It was a miracle he lived for so long.
Whatever you do, eat healthy and keep positive. Also clinical trials are a good thing. He never considered it and I believe it would have made a difference.

@@irynafox3593 I'm in Detroit downtown. I went through the Henry Ford health system and Wayne state university clinics, then a couple private neurologists. I really need to try again because as of recently I have been unable to suppress headaches anymore with disorientation and that electricity feeling. Things got worse after a bad car accident in 2019. I was like mindless in the period following that accident. I fell down a lot of stairs and started fires cooking and everything. Thanks I appreciate you guys saying that

Cancer is so evil. I hate it. The signs the doc mentioned are spot on. If you tend to have migraines but it does not ever go away it is a sign. For example, You can have a pain level 8 take meds and it stays at a 4 for weeks. Bad signs. Pain levels in hospital go 1 to a 10.
If you start throwing up and never had that symptom before that is a change. Get checked out. Those hand eye coordination tests they do at the neurologist appt never showed anything . Press for a MRI. They will think oh! She had one 3 years ago..not necessary.. its BS. Go with your gut. They can be wrong. Trust me.

What type of headaches is it usually associated with?
@aimeek1236 with my daughter she would get a typical migraine and would never go away regardless of the meds. They would last days. The day it all went horrible she was crying to was so bad and threw up. Now migraines run in our family but I would speak to a professional to find out because I can only tell you about her.

My mom died from a gioblastoma in 2001, 6 months to the day after she was diagnosed. Her death was very peaceful though, I'm grateful for that.
8 weeks for my dad. And he had aphasia the whole time so we couldn’t communicate.

I mean you can go to the doctors with these symptoms but 99 percent of the time they'll gaslight the patient and send them home with pain killers and tell them to rest and drink water.

I’m having eye pain behind the eye and head pain in one part of my head. My doctor just ordered an MRI. I’m glad my doctor is taking it seriously, but I’m nervous.
Sounds kind of like a cluster headache. I've been getting those. Let me know what the results say cause I'm scared.
@@myvirtuallife3828 OK, this is going to sound insane but I had the worst headaches for two years. I got two mri's bloodwork...nothing. It ended up being an allergy to yeast. Now I avoid all doughnuts, pizzas with rising crusts, soft baked cookies, buns,..anything that rises. No headaches. but just ONE litle tiny doughnut...24 hours on one side of my head KILLS!!! I never had this allergy before but try cutting out yeast entirely for just a few days and see if you notice a difference. I helped my buddy too who was gettgin headaches. Maybe our yeast supply changed over covid who knows.

That was some vague advice. “Live a healthy lifestyle and listen to your body”. Many doctors clearly would rather continue treating the symptoms rather than preventing the cause.
I asked my doctor to give me a screening for cancer in body and he said we don’t give people your age test unless you have symptoms. So you cant test me until its too late?

While I agree it’s good to live a healthy lifestyle I’ve never heard there’s an identified cause of brain tumors and that a change in lifestyle would prevent them.
Absolutely correct Anne. A healthy lifestyle is the best prevention for a lot of illnesses, but glioblastoma is a death sentence. There are only 2 people since the 1960’s who have somehow defied the odds and survived for several years with one. I did quite a bit of digging for information when my husband was diagnosed with one in late 2019. He passed in early 2021.
You say almost 19,000 people will die of these tumors, but you don't say if that's in the U.S. or globally. You also, don't say if those numbers are annually or what? Misinformation isn't helpful...living a healthy life does NOT prevent this type of brain cancer. If so, what specific healthy activities are recommended?

This is so sad. I was hoping she would of pulled through.
I mean, at the end of the day there’s still not much to do about it. These symptoms are pretty broad and can also be other illnesses. Instead of desperately trying everything to beat death, we accept it has a part of life. Some people will spend hundreds on good food and supplements, work out regularly, carry a gun, has the highest tech security; only to die in his sleep from an aneurysm or heart attack at 20.
I once was going to make a video about that but decided not to make an entire generation more depressed than Jordan Peterson has already made them.
At the end of the day, we should still at least try!!
You might not be interested in extending your life and of those you love, but the majority of us are!!
There’s nothing at all wrong with taking precautions, to keep yourself well and safe, for as long as humanly possible!!

Exactly. I even believe it is the MAIN culprit. Cell phones, towers, smart meter, smart appliances, wi fi, the list could go on and on. Most people NEVER turn off wi fi at night or their phones and they should!! And shield a smart meter too!!

I haven’t known a person with a brain tumour who survived.
My sister survived a benign (meningioma) but large brain tumor in the 90s, then went on to become a Veterinarian about 10 years later. A woman in her Vet class survived a malignant brain tumor, but was left deaf in one ear. People survive, but I think it always takes a toll.
I have a meninginoma that was surgically removed. I have another small meninginoma that is being monitored and an acoustic neuroma or intracelluar schwanoma. My meninginoma was benign grade 1 reoccurrence.
Wow . I had a golf ball sized acoustic neuroma operated in in October . They removed 90 percent of it . I lost my hearing in my left ear and suffered so many obvious symptoms for years . I was gas lighted over and over again by doctors . If I did not take it into my own hands and go to see an eye doctor , I most likely would have been dead from a brian hemorrhage. I am very grateful to that eye doctor. Listen to your body and do not take no for an answer for these doctors

@@Winter-404 wow . I am so sorry. Mine was found incidentally when it was small. I was exhausted and felt weak so they were checking for MS , which i luckily didn’t have but found a small meninginoma instead. I remember at work we had a patient who was over the top really bizarre even for psych. Luckily our psychiatrist was also trained in neurology and sent the patient for a mri of the brain. Where they had an inoperable meninginoma tumor that was pressing on her brain and there was nothing that could be done. After that I went to see a neurosurgeon who did yearly mris but monitoring the growth. Back in 2018 it was getting bigger but it was at a hard place to get at and he thought it was too risky to do surgery and wanted to keep monitoring. I went up to Boston to Massachussets GENERAL Hospital for a consultation. This neurosurgeon was well versed in these tumors and stated it was getting near nerves and something should be done within the next five years. He mentioned radiation I think gamma knife but there was a small risk of cancer so since I was 41 at the time I opted for surgery. So I had a craniotomy done and have a titanium mesh in place. Mine was a grade 1 reoccurrence and has not grown back. I am now monitored by this neurosurgeon and have mris of my brain done now every two years. I never had any symptoms and luckily it was being monitored when it was small. I too have another small but stable meninginoma and an acoustic neuroma that are being monitored as well. Thank goodness for my experience in psych with the individual with a meninginoma it made me proactive with mine because I did not want a meninginoma that was too big and inoperable. @@ericablaschke3497 I just do not want anyone to suffer massive side effects if I can prevent it. The gamma knife is used to treat an assortment of issues such as small to medium brain tumors, abnormal blood vessel formations called arteriovenous malformations, epilepsy, trigeminal neuralgia, a nerve condition that causes chronic pain, and other neurological conditions. Course always a risk with radition vs open surgery. Each has its pros and cons and if given an option of going back to your life same day for those who might suffer from any of these conditions, I'll put this out there hoping I help at least one person by seeing both sides of an issue. I hate this happens to people, but if we can learn and help each other through it, then it was worth it. May God Bless you.

very sad, she is too young to die like this. unfortunately even doctor says you can lower your risk to get sick of cancer by living a healthy lifestyle...you can do all the right things and still get cancer, my lifepartner is a good example of that,he was a picture of health,never drinked or smoked but still got pancreatic cancer at 40,died at 43 after long fight. Because he was in such a good health and fit, he did lived longer than normal pancreatic cancer patients at stage 4. he did not have radiation or chemo,he did it for some months in the begining and he just felt so ill and tired all the time, so he said -i want to live happy as long as i have,rather than feeling sick everyday without any promise that it will cure me. so he stop getting chemo and cleaned his diet and did detoxing etc.
I pray this horrendous criminal crackdown on pain meds didn't affect her and she was at least given enough painmeds. Prayers to her family.
They are only cracking down on people who abuse HIGHLY addictive pain pills. Not people who genuinely need them.

Unfortunately nothing can fix a glioblastoma. Even when they operate and take it out, it has already spread in tiny amounts throughout the brain. The surgeon who operated on my husband described it as trying to gather all the tiny droplets of an aerosol after you have sprayed it in the air. It is a death sentence.

Landis, glioblastoma is a death sentence, it doesn’t matter when it’s detected. Even with surgery, it is already too late. And frequent scans are considered a risk themselves. Just hope you don’t get one!

Its very common. So common my recommendation is DO NOT search for anything related to cancer diagnosis or you'll be traumatized within a few short hours how many young people get cancer out of nowhere.

What I don’t understand is how they end the video with, take care of your self and take your health seriously. It’s a tumor we can’t control? The moment someone gets an odd enough symptom, they go to the ER. We can’t go for everything. So it’s not really take care of yourself. Just go to the hospital if you’re acting weird

Wish doctors would’ve listened to me. It took me getting pregnant to be seen by an endocrinologist and by golly guess what they found?! Cancer in my thyroid (tumor was the size of a lemon) I had it removed 5 weeks after giving birth!

I wish she had tried a newer research method, FDA approved in 2016, that I saw on 60 minutes one night, where Duke University medical professionals injected a recombinant form of the live polio virus directly into brain tumors. The first volunteer, was a young woman that had only months to live, and is now cancer free! Other volunteers followed, and also had great results!
We had a family friend who did not meet criteria for this research trial because the criteria were very selective. It is more difficult to qualify and gain entry into a research study group than one might think.

I wonder if the doctors thought to use the new trial they are doing with the strain from the polio virus. It has helped many people with brain tumours. Its still a 50/50 chance but i think its still better than what treatments they are currently using.
