      And this was new rugby to me, the intricate plays. I was used to the engine room of Fitzpatrick and co. so seeing this style of play was pretty exciting. Not so interested in today's game

    • @konradyearwood5845
      @konradyearwood5845 Před 5 měsíci +5

      The rush defence tends to close the space so quickly that that dummy maul would not have been able to be set to form the screen. Sometimes you have to admit that you miss the old days when the defences were not so well organised.

      What a game it used to be

    • @speeddemon9555
      @speeddemon9555 Před 5 měsíci +1

      yep, rugby these days has turned to crap, just a bad game of league with lineouts, heaps of cards for looking at another players head, and guys more interested in their hairdoes than the game, i USED to be a union fanatic, not now though, the powers that be have killed off the game.

    • @commentarytalk1446
      @commentarytalk1446 Před 5 měsíci +5

      @@speeddemon9555 Union was always going to suffer under professionalism tbh. That's where League already iterated and ironed out the problems. As another commet says, rush defence would kill this move because the backs are behind the no8 foot instead of what is needed: 10m back! Jackalling killing attacking rugby also? That's why league went for no contest of the ball (except 1 on 1) and tackle count on the floor.
      That said to regain the old Union spirit the solution is simple but the sunk cost won't allow it: BIGGER PITCHES which brings back the differentiation between forwards and backs and adds space for such moves as this. It's crazy the modern athletes are playing on the same size pitch as juniors if you think about it with 30 giant men on the pitch plus subs like NFL...
      Anyway great move and around the peak of Union imho when this move was done.

    I've watched this move a hundred times. I still have no idea how they pulled that off, especially while in general play. A great era in NZ rugby
