    Just an fyi for anybody reading comments if the ilvl diff between the two tanks is big enough (such as a tank in crafted vs a tank in BiS), the better tank should always just MT. The bonus from extra defense and HP can very quickly out pace the benefit of certain tank's kits. This would be one of the rare circumstances mentioned in the video. If you are starting out, you should try to get comfy on most Savage+ fights as both MT or OT or at least have an understanding what your cotank's responsibilities and positions are. This knowledge is critical in the event your co tank dies and you quickly need to think of a solution to recover the pull, but more importantly it's so you're never the WAR main that mentally falls apart because a group wants you to OT.

    We have a GNB as a MT and a WAR as an OT because our GNB has been main tanking for his entire FFXIV life and our WAR is new to the role of tank and said he didn't care. Every time we have someone fill they're like "Well that GNB is a chad for taking the MT spot from the WAR" while said GNB is actually super quiet and sweet. Him being a chad is kind of a meme at this point.

  • @azul86
    @azul86 Před 10 měsíci +18

    As a PLD main, I am partial to OTing, and will happily step aside for either GNB or DRK. I don't feel it was covered on your video, but the abilities Cover and Divine Veil also exist, with Cover being ideal for protecting either your MT (if they have excess Vul debuffs with an incoming heavy hit), or a healer trying to slow Rez due to a Swiftcast loss. Paired with the other mitigations, including Hallowed Ground if needed (the only Invul ability that does not allow health to drop when cast), means as an OT, I am keeping as much a watch on supporting the party as my healers, and less focus on just driving rotations into the boss.
    But then again, I could also be a minority...

    • @jetfire5991
      @jetfire5991 Před 10 měsíci +1

      Cover really fell off when they nerfed it in ShB I think. It doesn't feel worth using anymore as a clutch-save for the other tank, since it doesn't provide mitigation anymore. Most of Cover's current utility in regards to slapping it on the other tank can be achieved with just Provoke, which is 100% free unlike Cover, and I don't think Hallowed works in Conjunction with Cover aswell (I think, I'm gonna test this later - Edit: it doesn't, you still take transferred damage from Cover while Hallowed is running)
      As for saving a low HP rezzer (be it heal or dps) from a raidwide to hopefully re*cover* (sorry for the bad pun), that doesn't matter if you're MTing or OTing, same with raidwide mitigation, which is probably the reason why Azurite didn't talk at all about AoE Mitigation, since the point of the Video is just creating a list for "Who has it the easiest to be slapped by the Boss vs helping the other tank getting slapped", and isn't a list of "which tanks should you bring to a raid"

      Alliance raid MT is whoever does more threat. If I run it as a tank, more than likely I turn off stance at the very beginning and turn it on after a few gcds so I'll get whichever buster or adds happen, but rarely do I ever care to fight for aggro. If I turn on stance late and still rip aggro, I'm just gonna be MT because that means the other tank is either severely undergeared in comparison, or they're just bad. At that point if they keep voking, Imma just do normal rotation and probably be back to ranking soon anyway.

    Those ones are ok to be main tanking
    But I like healing dark knight, they are extremely easy to heal. People say that they are too squishy, all tanks are squishy, it's just all the tanks have a different way of dealing with that squishyness, as a dark knight, you have to balance your cds and mitigations effectively, you can't just kitchen sink it like a warrior and then heal up to full

    I'm a WAR MT main since SHB but I've gotten used to MT-ing as a drk for my savage static(from P1S-P12S) since my OT who plays war is still not as comfortable with MT-ing. Although I would still call it towards preference, it does feel that drk does need extra support from healers to MT, as well as knowledge of when to hold TBN for an incoming tankbuster or to freely use it to give the healers some breathing room. Knowing when the boss' autos break your TBN inbetween the boss starting up their next mechanic is an extra factor of challenge in MT-ing as DRK but it feels very fun/satisfying to me compared to just bloodwhettling without needing a single thought.

    When you tank on ff does that mean you constantly hold aggro and stand in front of the boss no matter what even if your standing in aoe yhat is killing you and thr healers are supposed to keep u alive or are you suppose to still try not to take damage?

    • @KingCloudsCape
      @KingCloudsCape Před 10 měsíci +1

      Still try not to take damage. You want to avoid aoes but always try to return to as close a spot as possible to your original spot.
      As a tank approaching a boss, you hit it with your ranged attack, and walk through it. As you're walking through it should move to the center of the arena and then it will turn to face you, away from the party. Many bosses have cleaving frontal attacks, and many melee dps have positionals that do more damage hitting the back of the boss so this is best practice.
      Once its in this position you want to try to return to this same formation as quickly as you can if you need to move. When you've got enough practice it's actually possible to dodge an aoe and move back into position before the boss even moves. Good luck! Enjoy tanking!

    Hot Take.. Living Dead is now the best or atleast the second best Invulv for Raiding.
    1. It has the second short CD of all Invulv after Holmgang
    2. It forgives the most timing errors from a simple reason, when you use Holmgang your 10 Seconds immortality starts immeadley, but in Living Dead it starts _after_ you take the deadly damage, just imagine a Holmgang that starts after you take damage that would kill you like a not shared stack tankbuster etc.
    3. Not all people know it but DRK can now heal himself with each GCD Hit in Living Dead, each hit heals you with a potency of 1500, mean that after 3 hits you almost healed _alone_ 90% when you dont have crits.
    Btw, while i prog P10S as MT, i feel much more safe when i play DRK then PLD, sure PLD has better overall healing.. but like mention in the video, DRK is better to mitigate burst incomming damage

    I don't disagree with your rankings, but I think it's worth noting that, outside of prog, tank comp really matters very little, if at all. If you're reclearing a savage fight after the first couple weeks when people have higher item level gear, which job is MT is mostly irrelevant. The only fight in this tier where auto-attack damage is even remotely a problem is P12SP2, and even then, dark knights can handle it well just by smart use of TBN. Never mind that fight design has increasingly made it so the OT either has to take a lot of damage -- think P3S -- or the fight has multiple swaps and each tank will be MT for an extended period of time, like in P5S. What matters far more than what job you're playing is how well you play it. I've seen a lot of PFers take warrior into a savage fight and fail miserably because they have no idea what they're doing as a MT.

I've been out-tanked by pretty much each different role when it comes to "Main tanking", it rarely happens when I use my Warrior, but when it does, oh boy, I definitely know I should not be Main tanking, if they're on a completely different level, and need to practice my rotations more.

  • @furen4962
    @furen4962 Před 9 měsíci

    I mean, this comes from an ultimate raider. WAR is #1 cause of Holmgangs low CD and equilibrium being an instant heal off of that and tank busters. After that, it doesnt really matter but ideally you would want DRK to Main tank. Its CD for Living dead is lower then Hallowed, being hit by autos constantly means having uptime on TBN is better then sheltron, and living shadow actually gives you increased emnity generation meaning in a long fight you could easily rip it off. Let alone the opener being so strong you can start off the fight without having to have your OT toggle stance. This is coming from a DRK/GNB main. You also have a two charge 10% that you can keep rolling the entire time. Which, mind you that TBN and Oblation can be used on other people but i hate having to target someone else during burst phase to apply these things.
    Paladin is the one you dont want tbh as sheltron has the same gauge as intervention, its invuln cd is insanely long (Which, invulns are more important than anything on tanks), and Cover would be made useless which can easily be used to cheese mechanics (P9S martialist tank swap for example). Sheltron atleast gives healing and damage resistance on top of the block, but you would basically render a button useless.
    From my experience playing every single tank in ultimate and savage and my opinion, WAR -> DRK -> GNB -> PLD

    • @LuminNox
      @LuminNox Před 9 měsíci

      I could understand an argument of GNB over PLD, PLD still got the better self-sustain though which is the most important thing for MT. Holy Shieltron however is much stronger than Intervention. It's a short CD Sentinel with an added regen effect.
      You mentioned it yourself, DRK can target others with TBN and Oblation so they don't miss out at all on them. If you don't like targetting others you can just macro them, that way you don't even potentially miss the auto attack.
      I don't get why people bring invulns into this discussion. They got nothing to do with MT capability. If you wanna use an invuln at a specific time you can just swap beforehand.
      All tanks are capable of MTing. But from a purely objective PoV Azu's list is correct.
      #1 WAR: insane self-sustain via Bloodwhetting and Equilibrium, Vengeance even being a slight DPS increase
      #2 PLD: passive mitigation via blocks (shield), having a short CD 30% mit in holy sheltron + self-sustain with regens
      #3 GNB: additional mitigation CD with camouflage, decent self-sustain with HoC and aurora + passive self-sustain in brutal shell
      HoC (with it the brutal shell effect as well) and aurora can also just be used on other targets without any fall off however + GNB really hates repositioning enemies
      DRK: ignorable self-sustain with Souleater, decent self-sustain with TBN
      TBN is great and oblation is alright, can be used on other targets though without any fall off

    • @azaraphrane
      @azaraphrane Před měsícem

      This is such an insane take in like every aspect. Absolutely wild to lead with "as an Ultimate Raider" then immediately go into "it has Living Dead so it's better than PLD/GNB" when every ultimate has a mit plan that is designed around utilizing all tank invulns. There's no "oh shit i need to invuln so thank god i have this short LD cooldown cause i'm a chad DRK". Where you use your invuln is predetermined and has no impact on whether or not you should be the MT.
      As far as being hit by autos, PLD maintains extremely strong passive mitigation with their Block, which also has a chance of happening on any Tankbuster that Bulwark isn't up for, so single-target busters on a PLD can sometimes be mitigated even further with a little luck, just adding to how tanky they are overall. Their healing is another massive benefit for so many reasons. While it's true that you don't plan your 1m burst around moments where you need the extra healing, PLD being able to stock 2 uses of their Holy Sheltron means they can use 1 literally any time they hit 100 gauge with no penalty unless they're saving for a double buster, unlike DRK who absolutely won't use a TBN unless it's going to break. There's also no reason you'd ever want to prioritize using Intervention over Sheltron, and Sheltron requires you to be the MT to get value from it, while TBN and Oblation can be used on the cotank for the same benefit as on themselves.
      Would also like to clarify that Living Shadow doesn't give you increased Enmity, however, what does give Enmity is Healing, like from Sheltron, meaning PLD is actually more likely to hold aggro in the long run.
      I'll never understand the desire to "cheese" tank swaps with Cover. You're using 50 gauge on a button that doesn't mitigate damage, when you could use it to mitigate damage. Swapping isn't hard, you either hit Voke or you turn your stance off, 1 button.
      DRK is also by far the tank most shit on by specific fights and very rarely gets to be utilized to its full potential, which would still not include being MT. In ults like Ucob/UWU where you're lv 70, i wouldn't actively choose to bring a DRK (lol where missionary?) when every other tank has raid mit available, and PLD excels here by having Wings which offers a huge amount of comfort. You also wouldn't pick it as a MT over PLD in lv 70 raids because Sheltron is 20% mit at that level while Intervention is 10%, so you'll get more value from your gauge as a MT. There's also the fact that when Physical Busters are considered, you want the DRK to take as few of them as possible because you don't have Dark Mind, while all other tanks can benefit from their Unique regardless of the buster type.
      The variance of Physical/Magical damage split really can't be mentioned enough either when referring to DRK as a MT. As if WAR/PLD didn't have enough sustain already, they lose nothing when a boss uses Physical autos/busters. So many bosses have either Physical Autos or Physical Busters, both of which lead into DRK being actively worse as a MT. Even if you use DM on a Magical Buster, if it's then followed by Physical Autos then you've successfully taken 1 hit with DM and are then losing that mitigation on all the autos following it, while the other 3 tanks retain the value of their Uniques. This is even more apparent when bosses like to throw out Physical Busters because a DRK will generally live said buster with less health than the other tanks, making them require more healing for subsequent autos which, again, may be physical. I'd also note there's no reason to bring up "but i have Oblation to supplement 10% more mitigation for busters i don't have DM for" because you can just give it to the other tank with the same number of button presses.
      I'm not going to go into all the situations where DRK is inherently weaker than other tanks, but i'll mention that a ton of things can pile onto it to lower its effectiveness as a MT. It's an incredible tank for both P6 and P7 of DSR, but at the same time gets shit on in stuff like P2 where Thordan's buster is not only Physical, but also hits 3 times, lowering the value of TBN as a mit. You need to use more mit for the first buster here to take the same damage as any other tank, and then have less mit to use for the tethers during Strength which are also physical, causing you to, at best, barely live, or otherwise die outright. This same scenario can apply to any fight with multiple physical busters and it makes sustaining a DRK after the buster that much harder than any other tank when they barely limp away from the buster itself.
      I'll leave off with the fact that, if possible, the other tank should take a Single buster while being mitigated by DRK's TBN, as this is more likely to increase the overall value of TBN itself. DRK has the "strongest kitchen sink" out of the tanks by way of having the standard 20/30 as well as another 20, then 10, then TBN growing in value based on how much mitigation is applied to the target, as it's Health % based instead of stacking multiplicatively with the other mits. A comparison would be that PLD with Ramp/Sent/Bul/Shel can generate roughly 68% personal mitigation after multiplication, while a DRK can generate about 60% with Ramp/Sent/DM/Oblation then shield themselves for 25% hp, which ends up being more value than the 68% total mit a PLD can generate for a brief window. While DRK's Kitchen Sink is extremely strong, its TBN grows stronger when the target is stacked with more mitigation, meaning that for a Single buster, TBN would be more effective in mitigating the PLD which can generate more % mitigation on its own, than mitigating itself for a Single buster in which the PLD isn't using Rampart/Sentinel to amp Intervention to the full 30% value.
      Let the other tank MT, the healers will thank you.

    Honestly, while it's totally true the content of the video, i don't really feel that much importance on who wants to MT- you have to consider that Healers kit for single target(which basically are mainly For Tank unless someone else messes up mechs) are quite strongs too that you don't really see even as DRK MT that healers spam Heal II equivalent.
    For me it's based mainly on the fight and responsabilities each tanks has- Like MT in P4s gets flamed because of poor positioning which makes (Generally unless some incidents happens) OT having less job to do, while P5s they both plays the same. Another more recent fight as example could be P11 OT sits there doing the same mechs as others while wandering around the map freely without thinking where Divisive Hits during Shadowed messenger.
    I play Both (mainly MT while with my OT friend) in PF so i generally learn both but for me it's more how you want to handle mechs, Jobs kits are a plus or minus after that, and for our healer friend. In Static you can totally plan to play GNB/DRK as OT and it would be wonderful- but not something PF can afford to do most of the time.

    It literally doesnt matter who tanks. Every tank is main and off tank. This isnt 2.x where some roles are better at things than others - the tanks have been homogenized.

    Personally, As a paladin main I do gear inspection... if their dps will outdo me They Main tank... if I see 640 freshes (no materia)😂 I know regardless I am forced to main tank...😢 however I do use my role as the Off tank to eat solo busters for the Mt. Literally P9S I prefer to OT as I can get the ascendant fists and be fine...

    DRK is underrated, he has the best self mitigation and tankbusters are really well handled thanks to Dark Mind (+ Oblation & TBN) being up for each of them. Opposite of that, PLD is missing an additional self mitig like Shake it Off, Dark Mind or Camouflage. So yes, self healing is convenient during a fight, but I still rate DRK as the n°2 MT thanks to the strong self mitigation tools

      When i progging TEA and GNB is already taken i prefer playing DRK then WAR because WAR feels almost to unstable for this fight when im honest^^ Dark Mind with 60 seconds cooldown is just *chefkiss* then TBN and most of the tankbuster even in high end content feels like nothing

      Comments like this are hilarious when you can literally look at any Ultimate on FFLOGS and view the highest Healing Parses across tanks as a whole (which factors in mitigation as Healing) and see that PLD and WAR both vastly outstrip DRK in total amount of damage Mitigated/Healed, despite the fact that Holmgang and Hallowed Ground do not factor into the log as "Healing" while DRK is actively being padded by its Walking Dead heal buff. TOP has a single DRK in the top 100 healing parses for tanks while being flooded with WAR/PLD. PLD isn't missing a mitigation and with Holy Sheltron no longer forcing a block, PLD can now % chance their way into 20% more mit on any buster that they don't have Bulwark available for.

    I actually prefer to MT as DRK lol. Gotta plan out when to use TBN to ignore auto attacks from the boss, which is engaging for me.

      @AzuriteTV  Před 10 měsíci

      Or... and I know this is crazy but just plan out when to use TBN on the other tank who is main tanking? That way you lose nothing and something like a warrior or paladin gains a lot from MTing!

    Definitely worst mt is gnb, cause you need to consider boss placement as mt and continuation contradicts that. This s......d skill, while gives you totally respectful damage, is so restrictive. War best by far as mt, that thrill of battle plus equilibrium combo is sick, especially when crits, it's like 70k heal.

  • @DiannaGold

    PLD is the best tank at 90. 89 and below , it's WAR. The other 2 are only tanks in name. They suck lol

      As a pld main, we really get screwed as all of our good stuff is 80+ Heck even the gap closer is like 74. MT or OT doesn't matter to me but no better OT than pld imo. their kit for the party is just too good. divine veil is sometimes enough to cover healing for bosses in expert dungeons

    Yeah, you forgot to take into account the average warrior raid iq and the cowardice of the paladin.
    With that the new tier list for main tank is :
    Gunbreaker, dark knight, all the healer, all the dps, warrior, paladin
    For those who didn't get it. It was a joke.
